Hulu’s 2022 release Pam and Tommy is a fictionalized retelling of the 1995 robbery and exploitation of Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee. Sebastian Stan and Lily James play the couple whose sex tape became household fodder after it was distributed and went viral online. Contrary to popular belief, Anderson’s Netflix documentary wasn’t her way of addressing the Hulu series or the things it got wrong. While Pamela, a love story allows Anderson to take control of the narrative the Hulu series spun — an irony considering she had to do the same thing when the sex tape came out — Pam and Tommy wasn’t the source of inspiration.

Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee’s infamous sex tape became household fodder once again when Hulu released Pam & Tommy in February 2022. Now, almost a year later, Anderson is taking back the narrative. Her documentary Pamela, a love story, premiered on Netflix on Jan. 31, 2023. While the Hulu series does come up in passing, it’s not the focus. Anderson says she hasn’t seen Pam & Tommy, but her son Brandon Lee has. Here’s what Anderson’s eldest son had to say about the Rand Gauthier storyline in Pam & Tommy.
Brandon Thomas Lee and Pamela Anderson | Netflix Rand Gauthier reportedly was involved in taking the sex tape
As Anderson points out in the documentary, they’re still not sure who stole the safe containing the videotape. Regardless, the Hulu series paints Rand Gauthier (Seth Rogen) as suspect number one, thanks to an article Rolling Stone published about the ordeal.

Ryan White’s new Netflix documentary, Pamela, a love story, captures the rise and re-rise of one of the ’90s most famous women, Pamela Anderson.
The film spans her early years growing up on Vancouver Island, where she experienced sexual abuse, to her recent decade-in-the-making Broadway debut as Roxy in Chicago, with the Good Night Oppy and Ask Dr. Ruth director showing one of the world’s biggest mega-stars in a humanizing character portrait. Arriving the same day as her memoir Love, Pamela and following the Hulu series Pam & Tommy, the film ultimately doubles as a re-examination of her cultural impact, career, sexuality and personhood.
Conducted with her consent — something that Anderson has not always gotten in her personal or professional life — White’s film helps cast a new light on the actress, author, model, activist and mother. It also raises questions about how an entertainment and media industry...

Pamela Anderson is a notoriously polarizing figure. She was inescapable in the 90s, and while she had taken a step out of the spotlight since then, she’s the subject of a new documentary, presumably in response to the recent Hulu mini-series Pam & Tommy, which recounted the events of the theft to the spread of the infamous private sex tape with her and then-husband, Tommy Lee.
Netflix has just released the trailer for Pamela, A Love Story. The synopsis of the new documentary reads,
“An intimate and humanizing portrait of one of the world’s most famous blonde bombshells, Pamela, a love story follows the trajectory of Pamela Anderson’s life and career from small town girl to international sex symbol, actress, activist and doting mother.”

Last February, when Hulu chronicled the ’90s sex tape leak of Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee through the miniseries “Pam & Tommy,” it received generally positive reviews from critics, but notably lacked the participation of one of its main subjects. Anderson reportedly refused to meet with anyone from the production to offer her point of view on the scandal, which caused a sexist backlash against her at the time.
Now, the “Baywatch” star and iconic model is offering her perspective on her life and career with the upcoming Netflix documentary “Pamela, A Love Story.” The streamer released the trailer for the documentary Tuesday, with the release date set for January 31.

The Museum of the Moving Image and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation announced 2022 award recipients from the Sloan Film Program on Friday. A pilot script titled “Until Then We Keep Breathing” by UCLA student Samantha Sewell and a feature script called “Woodside” by Florida State University student Gerard Shaka were among the projects recognized.
“While the four honored scripts (two winners and two honorable mentions) deal with a broad range of settings, genres, and scientific and technological themes — from cystic fibrosis and congenital disability to climate change and permafrost, from marine conservation and mangrove systems to IVF and reproductive medicine — all of the stories evoke the formative and central role of families and family relationships in the lives of their protagonists,” wrote Doron Weber, vice president and program director at the Sloan Foundation. “They are quintessentially human stories about how nature shapes us and how science and technology seek to reshape nature.

In 2003, NASA sent a 5-foot tall rover named Opportunity to our neighbor in the solar system, Mars. The robot, nicknamed Oppy, was designed to explore a small rocky patch of the red planet for a few months, but it lived for another 15 years.
In this case, “lived” in an anthropomorphic word for the metal and glass rover that you’ll hear used often by NASA engineers in “Good Night Oppy,” director Ryan White’s dazzling film about the Opportunity mission. Made with the backing of Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment and Peter Berg’s Film 45, the documentary features long, incredible, photo-realistic CGI scenes of Oppy rolling around and toiling on Mars, made with assistance from George Lucas’s Industrial Light & Magic.

Director Ryan White’s “Good Night Oppy” tells the story of Opportunity, the unexpectedly resilient NASA rover that stretched its scheduled 90 days on Mars into a 15-year mission. To tell the story of Opportunity’s groundbreaking journey and the bond between the robot and its human operators millions of miles away, White worked closely with NASA as well as visual effects powerhouse Industrial Light & Magic; together, they crafted a film comprised of both riveting archival footage and computer generated imagery depicting Oppy’s experiences in meticulous visual and aural detail.
For White, the project represented the fulfillment of his childhood dreams. “I was a total space nut,” he told IndieWire. “I spent my entire childhood wanting to be an astronaut.” Although White had been pitched space movies before, he never found a story worth pursuing until Peter Berg’s Film 45 and Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment approached him with the Opportunity project.

Ryan White’s documentary “Good Night Oppy” tells the inspirational true story of Opportunity, a rover sent to Mars for a 90-day mission in 2003 that ended up surviving for 15 years. Per an official synopsis, the film follows Opportunity’s groundbreaking journey on Mars and the remarkable bond forged between a robot and her humans millions of miles away. Watch the trailer below.
Angela Bassett narrates the documentary about the rover that outlasted its estimated survival date by more than 60 times. The rover was initially launched into space in 2003 to look for ancient water on Mars; it “died” in 2019 on the Red Planet after discovering that Mars stayed wet for an “extended period and that conditions could have been suitable for sustaining microbial life,” per NASA’s website. Its twin rover Spirit was active on Mars until 2010.

The day before the pandemic shut down Los Angeles in March 2020, veteran documentary filmmaker Ryan White signed on to make “Good Night Oppy.” With the support of NASA, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (Jpl) and Industrial Light & Magic (Ilm), the documentary recounts the true story of Mars exploration rovers Spirit and Opportunity and the bond forged between the robots and the humans who created them. Opportunity, nicknamed “Oppy,” was originally expected to live for only 90 days but ended up exploring the Red Planet for nearly 15 years, sending invaluable data and images back to NASA.

NASA missions and movie productions have more in common than you might think, according to Steve Squyres, a scientist who was the principal investigator of the Mars Exploration Rover Mission.
“There are way, way more good ideas for movies than there are movies that actually get made,” Squyres tells The Hollywood Reporter. “And there are way, way more good ideas for space missions than there are missions that actually get selected to fly. With space missions there’s even more money on the line. The time that it takes to make the thing is comparable or maybe longer. And if you fail, you fail big.”

No documentary has ever won the Oscar for Best Picture. In fact no documentary has ever been nominated. If ever there was an opportunity to change that statistic, at least in terms of a nomination it could be the remarkable, emotional, and uplifting Good Night Oppy which transcends the genre to become a richly rewarding cinematic experience, kind of a cross between Wall-e and The Martian. this all actually happened, but it is quite unusual in that it is truly feel-good, and it has all been brought to new life in an irresitible new film that in a time of divisiveness and negativity will remind you of the very best of us.

While directing the documentary “Good Night Oppy,” which recalls the 15-year journey of the Mars rover Opportunity, Ryan White interviewed NASA scientists, dug through exclusive behind-the-scenes footage, and worked with Industrial Light & Magic to recreate the robot’s journey. But highlight of the whole experience were the notes he got from one of the film’s producers.
His name was Steven Spielberg.
“It was crazy,” White said in a recent interview with IndieWire over Zoom. “Not to take anything away from other producers, but Spielberg’s notes were one of a kind. They were so incisive.” The veteran filmmaker’s involvement with the project came through his company Amblin, which set up the project with production company Film 45 and secured NASA’s commitment prior to White’s signing on. “Spielberg’s name played a huge role in getting NASA onboard,” White said. “They’re pretty protective.”

The Mars documentary attacks! Amazon Studios, Film 45, Amblin Television and Tripod Media are co-producing Good Night Oppy, a feature about the Mars exploration rover Opportunity.
Ryan White (Assassins) directs the pic, which is in production and tells the inspirational true story of the veteran interstellar vehicle nicknamed “Oppy” and the bond forged between the robot and the humans that created it. Shortly after NASA landed its Curiosity and Perseverance rovers on Mars, a new documentary is in the works about another little robot that first captured hearts and minds: Opportunity, the Mars Exploration Rover.
The film about this “real-life Wall-e” is called “Good Night Oppy” and will be directed by “Assassins” filmmaker Ryan White. The heartwarming film shows how a robot that was only expected to be active for 90 days managed to explore Mars for nearly 15 years before making its final contact in June 2018. It’s about a robot traveling a planet on her own, but also about the literal connection and bond formed between human and machine.

The IFC Films documentary MLK/FBI from filmmaker Sam Pollard makes its debut in select theaters today as well as on demand. The release aligns with Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 18 and it is super relevant to America’s wild inequity and racist treatment of the Black community — specifically Black activists.
MLK/FBI made its world premiere last year at the Toronto International Film Festival and went on to play at the New York Film Festival. The riveting docu exposes J. Edgar Hoover and the U.S. government’s surveillance and harassment of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who was labeled by the FBI as the “most dangerous” Black person in America.

The documentary Assassins, opening in theaters today, is part legal thriller, part spy thriller, and part true crime story, “on literally the largest geopolitical scale,” as director Ryan White puts it.
The tale almost beggars belief. In 2017, Kim Jong-nam—half-brother of North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un—walked into the departures area of the airport in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, preparing to take a flight. Without warning, two young women came up behind him and covered his eyes with their hands, smearing a substance on him. Kim staggered away and within an hour he was dead.
“What we know now is that what was on the women’s hands was Vx, which is a nerve agent, the most lethal chemical weapon in the world,” White tells Deadline. “And that’s what they had rubbed on his eyes.”
One of the killers, a Vietnamese woman named Doan Thi Huong, sported a cheeky outfit for the deadly encounter.

‘Assassins’ director Ryan White and producer Jessica Hargrave investigate a bizarre political murder
John Le Carre or the late Ian Fleming could have come up with the plot of the new Greenwich Entertainment documentary “Assassins”: Two young women are accused of the 2017 assassination of Kim Jong-Nam, the half-brother of North Korea’s dictator Kim Jong-Un, in broad daylight at the Kuala Lumpur Airport by spreading Vx nerve agent on this face. Were they pawns of the ruthless Supreme Leader of North Korea, who in a Shakespearean move, wanted to cement his power or were the women working alone? Not surprisingly, North Korea denied any involvement in the murder.
Directed by Ryan White and produced by his longtime collaborator Jessica Hargrave, “Assassins” earned strong reviews at the Sundance Film Festival; it’s currently at 100% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Variety’s Owen Gleiberman called it “a terrific true-crime story, but also a documentary thriller about the new world order. We’re shown photos and videos of the young women,...

Greenwich Entertainment has picked up Assassins, the Ryan White-directed documentary exposé about the assassination of Kim Jong-nam, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s half-brother. The doc had its premiere earlier this year at Sundance Film Festival and will be released in theaters on December 4.
In 2017, Kim Jong-nam was assassinated in broad daylight at a crowded Malaysian airport. The brazen murder was caught entirely by security cameras with footage showing two young women approaching Jong-nam from behind and covering his eyes with their hands. He stumbled away and was dead within an hour. The two women, who had never met and claimed they had been hired for a video prank show and had no idea what they were actually doing, were arrested and charged with murder. Imprisoned in a foreign land and facing execution, the young women begged for authorities to believe their outlandish tale.

Greenwich Entertainment has picked up North American rights to director Ryan White’s Sundance documentary “Assassins.”
The film is a jaw-dropping exposé of the assassination of Kim Jong-nam, the half-brother of North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un. Given unprecedented access to the key players and previously undisclosed evidence, the film questions every angle of this murder, from human trafficking to high-level political espionage to the inner dynamics of the North Korean royal family.
“Assassins” made its world premiere to rave reviews during the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. Greenwich Entertainment plans to release the film in theaters on December 4.
“Like most people, we had seen the headlines of this brazen political murder. But in making ‘Assassins,’ we were repeatedly shocked to find how bizarre, deep and twisted the truth really is,” White said in a statement. “We’re thrilled to partner with Greenwich in bringing this unbelievable story to audiences.”

When putting together his newest documentary, “Assassins,” Ryan White wanted to pose a simple question: Were the women who assassinated Kim Jong-nam in 2017 trained assassins, or did they really do it as part of a reality TV show?
North Korean royal family member Kim Jong-nam, Kim Jong-un’s half brother, was publicly murdered at Kuala Lumpur International Airport when two women attacked him with Vx nerve agent. When the two women were arrested, they claimed they believed they were on some sort of a reality TV program or prank show.
“That was kind of our entry point: this bizarre story of two female political assassins and we followed their rial for the last two years,” White told TheWrap’s Brian Welk. “They were on death row in Malaysia, they pleaded not guilty saying they thought they were on a reality show when they committed the assassination. Magnolia Pictures has bought the documentary “Assassins,” which explores the 2017 assassination of Kim Jong-nam, half brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un.
Ryan White directed “Assassins,” which premiered on Jan. 28 at the Sundance Film Festival. Magnolia plans to release the film later this year.
Kim Jong-nam was murdered in the departures hall of Malaysia’s international airport in broad daylight, filmed entirely by security cameras. Footage showed two young women approaching Jong-nam from behind, covering his eyes with their hands, and pressing lethal nerve gas into his eyes. He stumbled away and was dead within an hour.
The two women who killed Jong-nam claimed they had simply been hired to pull a video prank and had no idea what they were really doing. An Indonesian woman, Siti Aisyah, and a Vietnamese woman, Doan Thi Huong, were charged with murder. Siti Aisyah was freed last year after the charge against her was dropped.

When host — and living documentary legend — Steve James took the stage on Thursday night to kick off the start of the 11th Annual Cinema Eye Honors Awards at Queens’ own Museum of the Moving Image, he might have enjoyed the benefit of being tipped off as to who would dominate the ceremony. No surprise then that Yance Ford and his debut feature, the deeply personal and long-gestating “Strong Island,” emerged as the night’s biggest winner, pulling in wins for Outstanding Direction, Outstanding Debut, and Outstanding Nonfiction Feature Film. Ford’s win for Outstanding Direction was also a history-maker: the filmmaker is the first to ever win the award for a debut film.
