Earlier this morning, I wrote about the final scene of Back to the Future being recreated in pixel art, and now a different group of artists have done a similar thing with the opening sequence of The Simpsons. The long-running animated series - can you believe it's been on the air for over 25 years? - has one of the most iconic intro sequences on TV, as the camera whips through the town of Springfield and whizzes past most of the show's main characters.
Paul Robertson and Ivan Dickson directed and animated this video (via Kotaku), which reminded me a lot of the old Simpsons arcade game I used to play in Chuck E. Cheese's when I was a kid. And the music by Jeremy Dower is pretty great, too.

Two pixel artists have created their own couch gag sequence for The Simpsons. It's full of fun detail and series references...
You could probably devote an entire website to all the homages and parodies made out Lego or pixel art, but this one's simply too good not to share.
Created by pixel artists Paul Robertson and Ivan Dixon, and featuring a soundtrack by Jeremy Dower, it's a 16-bit-style version of The Simpsons' opening credits. The attention to detail is exquisite - references to episodes past can be found in every scene - and, unusually, it just keeps getting better as it goes along.
Indeed, we wouldn't be too surprised if Fox didn't commission the artists to create something similar for the actual TV show. See for yourself...

Joan Rivers was a kind woman - as gracious, wise and generous as she was funny. That might sound strange to hear about a woman who could eviscerate any actress who made a misstep on the red carpet, and who famously described Elizabeth Taylor as standing in front of a microwave oven screaming, "Hurry!" Her biting comedic sensibility - her art and craft - came from feeling like an outsider among Hollywood stars and New York society, even after she herself became very rich and very famous. And she sincerely believed that by skewering you in her act, she was...

Coin is an animated short directed and animated by Chris Burns. Inspired by early video games, Coin is a continuous shot of one man destroying everything in his path to vengeance.

If you paid attention to Tribute Games' Kickstarter campaign for "Mercenary Kings," then you know the broad outlines of the game have remained appealingly static since last summer: "Contra"-esque run-and-gunning weapons creation from the team behind "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World," with distinctive pixel art by Paul Robertson. (Incidentally, does anybody else get an Akira Toriyama vibe from the concept art?)
Anyway, for those anxious to become a monarch-for-hire, Tribute is bringing "Mercenary Kings" to Steam Early access on July 22nd, alongside with a pre-order discount of 25%.
Steam Early Access is a program that allows developers to sell early playable versions (usually alpha or beta builds) as a sort of pre-order: eager fans get the game early at a discount along with the final retail version, and developers get a chance to look at feedback, find bugs, and make tweaks. Indeed, the latest "Mercenary Kings" trailer...

How does the sequel to a hoax provoke over 3 million viewers to tune in? If you don’t know, you’re apparently one of the few who don’t. The show in question is Mermaids: The New Evidence and it is now officially listed as Animal Planet’s most-watched telecast in the channel’s history. Yes, you read that right. The special is about mermaids.
The “documentary” – read our thoughts on it – aired on Sunday on Animal Planet to 3.6 million viewers, creating a new ratings record for the network. Yes, this surpasses the numbers for even the Puppy Bowl, in case you were in doubt.
Mermaids: The Body Found was the original program, also a hoax, and this year’s sequel has become huge. And yes, believe it or not, some viewers are fooled, thinking these shows are factual.
If you’re familiar with Alien Autopsy videos of the past,...

The most-watched telecast in Animal Planet’s history is about mermaids.
Sunday’s “documentary” Mermaids: The New Evidence delivered 3.6 million viewers, shattering the network’s ratings record. Yup, even bigger than the Puppy Bowl. The program is not only a hoax, but a sequel to a hoax — to last year’s rather effortlessly debunked Mermaids: The Body Found, which fooled more viewers than you’d think.
The straight-faced Mermaids specials (trailer below) basically play like Alien Autopsy for a new generation, though at least the infamous Fox special had “Fact or Fiction?” as a nudge-nudge subtitle. Both Animal Planet specials...

On "Mermaids: The New Evidence," Animal Planet revisited its documentary about the existence of mermaids from last year, "Mermaids: The Body Found." Biologist Dr. Paul Robertson returned with what appeared to be brand new footage of the alleged mythical creatures, allegedly taken this spring in the Greenland Sea.
Viewers were glued to the TV watching the new special, getting "Mermaids: The New Evidence" trending on Twitter.
But the whole thing is a hoax -- the original documentary was revealed to be staged. Discovery, Animal Planet's parent company, described the program as "science fiction" based on "scientific theory."
The executive producer of "Mermaids: The New Evidence" told the Mother Nature Network that he wanted people to think it was real -- that's why they made it look like a documentary.
And The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration maintains, "Mermaids: The New Evidence" is just entertainment. Its website reads: "No evidence...

We last heard from Mercenary Kings during its Kickstarter campaign, lured in by its promise of highly customizable run-and-shoot platforming and by Paul Robertson’s signature pixel art. The game was successfully funded in September 2012, which means that Mercenary Kings will be available on Steam in May (with Mac and Ouya ports to come later).
In the meantime, though, developer Tribute Studios is showing the game off at events: “Metal Slug” afficionados will be able to play the game at tonight’s Igda DemoNight in Montreal, or at Pax East, which takes place in Boston in March. They’ll even have a booth!
On a practical level, having a stable, playable build to show off to audiences is an important part of the game’s marketing and development -- a successful tour can spur word-of-mouth praise for Mercenary Kings while simultaneously gauging fan feedback. Anyone making the...
