In the 1990s and 2000s, May (and specifically Memorial Day) typically marked the beginning of Summer Movie Season. Multiplexes nationwide were packed to the emergency exits with big names, big explosions and (presumably) big box office. The film industry has changed since then, obviously, and summer no longer packs the same high-octane punch that it once did. But in this evolution, release schedule space has opened up for a stellar month of Don’t-Miss Indies titles.

Ahhh.. seems just like yesterday that Film Independent President Josh Welsh was on stage at the 2023 Film Independent Spirit Awards announcing the kickoff to our year-long #AD30 celebration, commemorating three uninterrupted decades—pandemics, strikes and recessions be damned!—of Film Independent Artist Development programs.
Of course, in reality that announcement was one full awards cycle ago, back when the Past Lives, Earth Mamas and May Decembers of the world were but a flicker in eyes of industry plaudit prognosticators. But the story of #AD30 has only grown in the interim.
Look no further than the program that started it all, Project Involve, which today announced the 27 new Fellows joining as part of its 2024 cohort—the 31st overall such cohort in a long line of inclusive, up-and-coming industry players. Project Involve alumni include Lulu Wang (Expats), Linda Yvette Chávez (Flamin’ Hot), Jomo Fray (All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt), Effie T. Brown...

As we made abundantly clear earlier this week, the Film Independent Spirit Awards are—to coin a phrase—a safe space for comedy. From the early quips of a Buck Henry or Kevin Pollack to more recent outings by laughmongers ranging from A (Fred Armisen) to V (Melissa Villaseñor), only the funniest 1% of carbon-based lifeforms are permitted to direct awards show traffic from our proprietary beachfront dais.
This year is no exception, which is why we’re thrilled today to announce the host of the Spirit Awards, 2024 edition: the wonderful, hilarious Aidy Bryant! Yup—Lil’ Baby Aidy. Comedian. Showrunner. Writer. Actor. SNL alumna. National treasure. And now? Spirit Awards host. Welcome to the club, Aidy!

The conversation has been ongoing for years, but only within the last few months have several awards bodies finally stepped up to make their acting categories gender neutral, abolishing decades of binary male-female views of acting and opening a door to performers who identify as nonbinary or trans and have felt invisible across the industry.
In August, the Film Independent Spirit Awards became one the most high-profile awards groups to join the trend, ditching separate Best Actor and Best Actress categories and combining them into one field populated with 10 actors. The move follows similar steps by the Gotham Awards in 2021 and the Canadian Screen Awards also in August. The TCA Awards kicked off the movement back as 1996, followed by the Grammys in 2012 (which eliminated gendered categories for performers), followed in recent years by the MTV Movie and TV Awards and the Berlin Film Festival.

Film Independent, the organization responsible for the Independent Spirit Awards, has announced that all acting categories will be gender-neutral, beginning with next year’s ceremony. This means that men, women and non-binary performers will compete in the same acting categories.
Film Independent president Josh Welsh said of the acting categories: “We’re thrilled to join the other festivals and award shows that are already moving to celebrate great acting without reference to gender…We’re also happy to welcome non-binary performers into the Spirit Awards without forcing them to choose to identify as male or female.”
The Independent Spirit Awards now join the British Independent Film Awards and the Gotham Awards in switching to gender-neutral categories. With this, the acting categories will expand to 10 nominees, compared to the usual five. They will also introduce two new categories: Best Breakthrough Performance and Best Supporting Performance in a New Scripted Series.

The 2023 Independent Spirit Awards will implement gender neutral acting categories, Film Independent announced on Tuesday.
The award ceremony, which honors the best in independent filmmaking and television production, will now present three film acting awards and two TV acting awards that are all gender neutral. The gendered film categories — male lead, female lead, male supporting and female supporting — have been eliminated, in favor of a lead performance and supporting performance category. Both will feature 10 nominees each, as opposed to the gendered categories which included five nominees. In addition, a new best breakthrough performance category has been added, which will feature five nominees of any gender.
In the TV awards, the best male and female performance categories have been eliminated for best lead and supporting performance categories, both open to any gender. Like the film awards, the TV acting categories consist of 10 nominees each.

Following the lead of several other awards groups, Film Independent is going gender-neutral for its Independent Spirit Awards.
The organization said Tuesday it will switch from the traditionally separated male and female lead and supporting categories for the film and TV Spirits and instead combine them with 10 nominations each in Best Lead Performance and Best Supporting Performance. The same will be true in the TV categories for Best Lead Performance in a New Scripted Series as well as a newly added award for Supporting Performance in a New Scripted Series. Film Independent’s Spirit Awards ceremony recognizing 2022 indie films — which will henceforth mean films that cost 30 million or less or, for the John Cassavetes Award, 1 million or less — will take place on March 4, 2023, the organization announced on Tuesday. And the categories for Spirit Award nominees and winners will look different than ever before.
Indeed, the organization has decided to trade in its “best actor,” “best actress,” “best supporting actor” and “best supporting actress” awards — for both film and TV performances — for gender-neutral categories with the same combined number of nominees, namely, best lead performance and best supporting performance.

The Indie Spirit Awards announced Thursday that the ceremony will move to March 6 next year, three weeks ahead of the March 27 Oscar date.
For many years, the awards have been held on the Saturday before the Oscars when a large number of stars and filmmakers are in town and ready to celebrate. The ceremony will move to 5 p.m. on Sunday instead of its usual early afternoon slot.
The move is designed to position the celebration of independent film as a more influential precursor to the Oscars, and comes in a year when the Golden Globes will not be televised.
The Sunday date will put the ceremony a day before the Oscar nominees luncheon the following Monday. It also falls ahead of the final round of balloting for the Oscars, which starts on March 17, meaning the Spirit winners will have a high profile going into Oscar voting.

The awards season keeps shifting: the Film Independent Spirit Awards will move away from its usual pre-Oscars ceremony date to one three weeks earlier. The 37th annual Indie Spirits will now take place on Sunday, March 6, with the Oscars following on Sunday, March 27.
Deadline notes “this is a huge break with tradition and comes as the Spirit Awards look to get more traction with the viewing public, as well as exert more possible influence on potential Oscar winners as this new date falls the day before the Oscar nominees luncheon and also before final balloting begins for the Academy on March 17.”
Still, it’s not the first break in tradition for the awards which, last year, opted to air a full three days before the Oscars, thanks to a televised virtual event hosted by Melissa Villaseñor. Traditionally, the awards play out on the Saturday afternoon before the Oscars on a beach in Santa Monica.

Emerald Fennell, the British writer/director of the acclaimed revenge thriller “Promising Young Woman,” has a most unusual way of penning a script. Fennell, who is an Emmy nominated executive producer and writer of BBC America’s “Killing Eve,” doesn’t write anything down until she’s completed the entire script in her head. “So, it usually takes a couple of years to finish it completely and then I’ll write it down,” said Fennell in a recent Film Independent zoom conversation with star Carey Mulligan moderated by the organization’s president Josh Welsh.
“Promising Young Woman,” which marks Fennell’s feature directorial review, premiered to strong reviews at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. This Focus Features release had a limited opening in theaters on Christmas and began streaming on Jan. 15. Mulligan recently won the Los Angeles Film Critics Association’s Best Actress honors for her startingly bold performance. And Fennell won for her screenplay.

In recent years, the Film Independent Spirit Awards nominating juries have looked away from the Oscars, and this year is no exception. But in a sign of the times, the Spirits added new television categories this time around. Thus Netflix dominated the 2021 nominations from the Spirit nominating committees, scoring 11 nominations over seven features and documentaries, plus another five for scripted series, for a total of 16 nominations.
Of the conventional theatrical distributors, Focus Features scored 10 nominations over two films, Eliza Hittman’s Sundance, Berlin, and New York Film Critics Circle-winner “Never Rarely Sometimes Always” with seven, and Emerald Fennell’s “Promising Young Woman” with three. A24, which led the pack last year with 18 nominations over seven films, followed with nine, six for Lee Isaac Chung’s “Minari” and three for Kelly Reichardt’s critics favorite “First Cow” (which won Best Film at the NYFCC). All three were nominated for Best Feature,...

This year, for the first time, the Independent Spirit Awards are moving away from the Saturday before the Oscars. That’s because it became clear that a live event, even in a billowing seaside tent in Santa Monica, just wasn’t going to happen. “This was the year to try new things,” said Film Independent president Josh Welsh in a phone interview. “It saddens me that we are not going to do the show on a beach in a tent; we waited as long as we could to make the decision. It’s clearly not safe to do an event; the world is not ready to meet in a tent in April. The Oscars may find a way to do a physical event, but at this point it is not safe or legal.”

As the independent film world prepares to head to a mostly remote Sundance Film Festival next week, veterans of the industry are weighing how much the pandemic has accelerated changes to distribution models and what the decline of traditional theatrical distribution and the rise of streaming means for them. “People are always saying the sky is falling and the world is ending, but somehow we always adapt to the new normal. I don’t think independent filmmaking is going anywhere, at all,” Josh Welsh, president of the nonprofit Film Independent, said during the latest WrapPRO Roundtable, moderated by TheWrap’s Diane Haithman. “I’ve been at Film Independent for about 20 years, and one constant is that the distribution landscape is constantly changing.” One change for Film Independent came on Thursday, when the organization announced that its Film Independent Spirit Awards would break with tradition by moving its usual freewheeling show...

The Film Independent Spirit Awards are moving up on the release calendar for this year only — breaking tradition by not taking place on the Thursday night before the Oscars, the nonprofit group Film Independent announced Thursday.
The 36th Annual Indie Spirits will now be held on the evening of Thursday, April 22 for a primetime broadcast on IFC. They were meant to be held on the afternoon of Saturday, April 24 — following a long-standing tradition of coming just one day before the Academy Awards. The show is always a looser experience held during the daytime in a massive tent adjacent to the Santa Monica Pier.
Further, nominations this year for the Independent Spirit Awards will be unveiled next week on January 26 by Laverne Cox, Barry Jenkins and Olivia Wilde, and the reveal will be streamed live on the Film Independent website and on its YouTube channel. No host has been announced for this year’s ceremony.

The Film Independent Spirit Awards, which has traditionally been held the day before the Oscars, has followed the Academy’s lead and are now planning to hold its ceremony on April 24, 2021. The move comes after the Academy earlier this week pushed back the date of its 2021 ceremony by two months, from February 28 to April 25.
In announcing the 2021 ceremony’s date, Film Independent President Josh Welsh also shared information about which movies will be eligible for the annual celebration of indie film.
“Additionally, we will recognize films that were released between January 1, 2020 and February 28, 2021 in acknowledgement of the unique challenges the world of cinema, and the world as a whole, is currently experiencing,” Welsh said in a statement.
That moves the Indie Spirits’ eligibility window toward the one established by the Academy governors. For the Oscars, the idea is that studios will have extra time to finish their movies and postpone...

Breaking: The Film Independent Spirit Awards will also move after AMPAS selected Sunday April 25 as the new 2021 ceremony date for the Oscars. Indie producer Miranda Bailey has dropped out of the drama “Time Capsule” a month before its scheduled location shoot in Georgia in protest of the state’s controversial “heartbeat” bill which was signed into law this month, Variety has learned.
Pre-production is currently underway in Georgia in the midst of a media firestorm over the legislation, which would ban abortion after six weeks of pregnancy if it goes into effect next year. Bailey and her Cold Iron Pictures walked out over the measure this week, according to a spokesperson for the producer, whose credits include the Sundance breakout “Swiss Army Man” and Mike Birbiglia’s “Don’t Think Twice.” The drama, plot details for which are under wraps, has “Deadpool” breakout Brianna Hildebrand attached to star, as well as “One Day at a Time” actor Todd Grinnell. But the film currently has no producer in line.

As the 2018 awards season marches slowly into its final days, only a handful of honors remain undistributed after some of the most volatile and contentious campaigns in years. Front-runners have come and gone in one major category after the next, as each guild and critics group announced different winners than its predecessors, demolishing expectations even among industry experts and turning a celebration of the cinematic arts into a no-holds-barred brawl for top honors.
But even as other organizations wrestle with the names, numbers and broadcasting merits of different categories, Film Independent sails smoothly toward its Feb. 23 Spirit Awards ceremony with a clearer mandate than ever to reward the effort put into a filmmaker’s vision rather than whatever PR narrative is constructed around it.
