The drama of addiction and recovery, as it takes place in the movies, tends to come at us like a series of rituals. There’s the rule-by-rule, day-by-day protocol of 12-step programs; a lot of us may feel we know it well from movies, even if we’ve never personally undergone the experience. There are the deeply engraved patterns of addiction itself: the highs, the lows, the cravings, the exploitation of friends and family members, the descent to the bottom, the grasping for the drink or the pill or the fix (or the one that isn’t there) and, in some cases, the criminal behavior. The reaching out to save oneself is also a kind of ritual — one that some addicts would say God built into us.
The ritual, in the case of this subject, extends to the audience. We live in a profoundly addictive society; whether or not you,...

"Scrubs" and "Garden State" star, Zach Braff, is jumping back into the director's chair after several awards nominations. Today we have the first trailer for his latest film, "A Good Person," starring Florence Pugh and Morgan Freeman. Production began on the project in October 2021, and it will be released in the spring of next year.
In the film, Pugh's character Allison is involved in a fatal accident, according to a report from Deadline. In the wake of the tragedy, Allison develops an "unlikely relationship with her would-be father-in-law," who is played by Freeman, which helps her find a way forward to "live a life worth living."
In addition to Pugh and Freeman, "A Good Person" will star Celeste O'Connor ("The In-Between"), Zoe Lister-Jones ("Life in Pieces"), and Molly Shannon ("Saturday Night Live"). Braff also serves as a writer for the film, which he told Vanity Fair that he wrote during the pandemic.

Viewers of sexy legal thriller Reasonable Doubt will discover something very much amiss in the seemingly perfect life of hotshot Los Angeles defense attorney Jax Stewart (Emayatzy Corinealdi). Her husband (McKinley Freeman) left her, she’s worrisomely attracted to both an ex-con client (Michael Ealy) and her own security guard (Toby Onwumere), and she’s defending wealthy Brayden Miller (Sean Patrick Thomas), charged with two horrific anti-woman crimes. So that she’s held at gunpoint — the perp is a central mystery — in the premiere may be the least of her problems. “Jax is definitely complicated,” says creator Raamla Mohamed, an executive producer alongside Kerry Washington, the pilot’s director. “Her relationship with men and with her sexuality get answered as the season goes on.” Sounds like a show soon to be a real guilty pleasure. The show title and each episode title are inspired by Jay-Z’s debut album of...

This article contains spoilers for The Matrix Resurrections.
Neo and Trinity are back in The Matrix Resurrections. But how the hell is that possible? Didn’t they die in Revolutions? And why is there a different version of Morpheus running around the simulation?
There are plenty of questions to be answered in The Matrix Resurrections and many of its big mysteries are addressed head on. But there are a few things that may not be so clear about the movie’s plot that need further explanation.
This is a sprawling, twisting, complicated, and sometimes messy movie, but I’ve tried my best to answer some of the movie’s biggest questions below…
How Are Neo and Trinity Alive?
Let’s get the hard question out of the way first. It’s confirmed in Resurrections that Neo and Trinity did indeed die in Revolutions — your eyes weren’t deceiving you — but...

"It's so easy to forget how much noise The Matrix pumps into your head." It's almost time... to return to the source. Warner Bros has unveiled a final official trailer for The Matrix Resurrections, which opens later this month. Plagued by strange memories, Neo's life takes an unexpected turn when he finds himself back inside The Matrix. The returning cast includes Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Jada Pinkett Smith, Lambert Wilson, & Daniel Bernhardt as Agent Johnson. Along with these Resurrections newcomers: Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, Christina Ricci, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Toby Onwumere, Max Riemelt, and Eréndira Ibarra. "Maybe this isn't the story you think it is..." Oh yes! WB has unveiled a brand new 45-sec promo trailer for The Matrix Resurrections, which opens later this month. I can't wait!! This is the first trailer since the original debut in September that contains new footage (everything else has been different edits / remixes). And this trailer makes things even more interesting by cutting & transitioning between some familiar faces & scenes. A very clear indication that there's layers upon layers of Matrixes (Matrices?) in this next movie. The rumor has been that this bright new Matrix is actually another Matrix within the old Matrix to control Neo and his narrative. Will “Matrix” fans take the Nft pill?
Warner Bros. is launching the sale of 100,000 nonfungible tokens (NFTs) of “Matrix”-inspired avatars later this month. The studio is pairing the hype over NFTs with the upcoming release of “The Matrix Resurrections,” aiming to gin up excitement for the long-awaited fourth movie in the popular sci-fi franchise — and also potentially landing a $5 million windfall over the sale of the digital-collectible NFTs.
It’s a natural tie-up that will put fans in the virtual world of “The Matrix,” through what the studio claims is the largest “Pfp” (profile picture) Nft drop ever with the 100,000 unique avatars available for purchase. NFTs provide a way to authenticate the ownership of unique pieces of digital content, using distributed blockchain technology — they’re akin to real-world collectibles like baseball cards. One of the most iconic movies to come out in what many critics have hailed as the best year for movies in modern times, 1999’s “The Matrix” was not just an unexpected box office hit, but an awards favorite as well. The science-fiction classic won all four of the Academy Awards for which it was nominated: Best Film Editing, Best Sound, Best Sound Editing, Best Visual Effects. Its four total awards at the 2000 ceremony placed “The Matrix” just one behind the night’s biggest winner, Best Picture champ “American Beauty.”
Times have changed in the 22 years since “The Matrix” arrived: the film’s groundbreaking effects almost seem quaint when compared to some recent winners and nominees in the Best Visual Effects category — to say nothing of the fact that dial-up internet was a key reference point for its vision of a digital world. But now, 18 years after the original film...

Back when most blockbuster movie franchises became standalone trilogies and not cinematic universes, The Matrix Revolutions seemed like a definitive end to Neo’s story. He’d struck a deal to save Zion from the Machines and deleted Hugo Weaving’s infinite Smiths once and for all. But what had it cost him? His sight, his life, and losing the woman he loved. It was a bittersweet end to The Wachowski’s magnum opus, but a conclusion nonetheless.

Cameras have rolled again on The Matrix 4 after a five-month hiatus due the pandemic.
Deadline first revealed back in March that production on the Warner Bros / Village Roadshow pic was pausing in German city Berlin due to the disruption. Filming is now back underway, with star Keanu Reeves making an appearance in a video interview with AP to update on its prospects.
“Everyone loves the project and if you’re ever going to get in a situation that needs to be figured out…show business people are the best,” said Reeves. “We’re scrappy, we know how to get stuff done, we’re inventive, we think on our feet. It’s a great honor and I’m grateful to be working.”
Regarding the Covid-19 safety measures the studio is taking, the actor said the protocols have been effective and not disruptive to date. “There’s thoughtful, effective protocols in place.

Keanu Reeves has praised the safety protocols in place after Lana Wachowski’s “The Matrix 4” resumed filming in Berlin.

Warner Bros. appears hopeful that production on “Matrix 4” will restart by early July.
Multiple sources tell Variety that the cast of Lana Wachowski’s fourth installment of the sci-fi franchise has signed eight-week extensions to keep the actors on hold until at least July 6.
Filming began in February in San Francisco before moving to Berlin in mid-March. However, cameras never got rolling in Europe because production was halted in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
Original “Matrix” stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are reprising their roles in the fourth film. Rounding out the cast are Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Neil Patrick Harris, Brian J. Smith, Toby Onwumere and Jonathan Groff.
The film is currently scheduled for a 2021 release. Warner Bros. has not announced an exact date nor if it will be impacted by the postponed production.
Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell wrote the script with Wachowski, who will also produce with Grant Hill.

One highly anticipated film that had to postpone due to the Covid-19 outbreak was the fourth entry into The Matrix franchise. In a Marvelized world where action sequences can be entirely prevised before principal photography even beings, we hoped part of the deal to make the film included complete creative control for Lana Wachowski, who is directing solo. Thankfully, that looks to be the case.
Speaking to Collider, Chad Stahelski revealed he and David Leitch, after working on the previous films, are reuniting with Lana Wachowski to develop some of the choreography for this new entry. The John Wick director also gave some welcome news: “What makes [Lana] so great is she directs her own action. We’ve had second unit directors on some of the Matrixes just because of the logistics involved. But of late, and especially on Matrix 4, she’s directing her own action. Lana Wachowski isn’t relying on second units when it comes to filming the action sequences in “The Matrix 4.” It’s become increasingly common for major Hollywood productions to use second units to assist with the filming of large scale action scenes. According to “John Wick” directors and former “Matrix” stunt workers Chad Stahelski and David Leitch, Lana Wachowski is handling all “Matrix 4” action scenes herself through her principal camera unit.
“What makes [Lana] so great is she directs her own action,” Stahelski told Collider. “We’ve had second unit directors on some of the [‘Matrix’ films] just because of the logistics involved. The Matrix 4 has temporarily shut down production due to the coronavirus pandemic that’s put much of the movie industry on hold in the past few weeks. The movie, a surprise sequel to the trilogy of cyberpunk action movies starring Keanu Reeves, was shooting in Berlin when Warner Bros. decided to postpone production.
According to Deadline, no one in the cast or crew has tested positive for the infection, so this is just a precautionary measure by the studio, which has also closed down production for The Batman, Fantastic Beasts 3, King Richard, and Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis Presley movie. WB projects were shooting in the UK, Australia, and Los Angeles.
The Lana Wachowski-directed movie has already filmed in the San Francisco Bay Area and Mexico City, with videos of death-defying stunts and Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss riding down busy city streets on a motorcycle making the rounds on social media.

Downtown San Franciso has been transformed into something of a futuristic battle zone these past few weeks thanks to The Matrix 4.
Warner’s long-awaited sci-fi sequel is deep in production ahead of its planned release in May of next year, and while we’re still a ways away from clocking eyes on our first-look teaser, a steady stream of set videos have been trickling onto social media.
Case in point: this latest snippet of on-set footage from Twitter user ‘SkyBobbyTv,’ which appears to show a mob of extras charging down an armored vehicle. It’s impossible to wean any story details from this clip, but it’s still pretty exciting to see the sheer scale of The Matrix 4, not to mention its use of practical effects.

If there’s one time-honored franchise known for its special effects, it’s The Matrix trilogy.
From bullet-time to those jaw-dropping fight scenes, Warner’s sci-fi gem truly set the bar high, though the importance of practical effects and stuntwork clearly isn’t lost on Lana Wachowski, who presided over an artificial war this past weekend when The Matrix 4 took over the streets of San Francisco – specifically Market Street, where a number of low-flying helicopters and bone-rattling explosions were snapped by curious onlookers.
And while it’s impossible to capture the true magnitude of said battle on a smartphone, according to NBC Bay Area (h/t CinemaBlend), San Francisco felt the full force of those staged explosions, leading to approximately $2,000 worth of damage to street lamps and a nearby advertising billboard.

Though 17 years have passed since Revolutions, the war between humanity and the machines rages on. And it’s spilled onto the streets of downtown San Francisco.
As you’ll see below, two set videos from The Matrix 4 have found their way onto the interwebs (watch them while you can!), featuring police vehicles, helicopters and a whole lot of explosions. It’s impossible to glean any story details from this footage alone, but we have a sneaking suspicion that this has been lifted from the sequel’s finale, given the sheer scope of the production. Or, at the very least, a pretty damn cool action sequence.
One thing we can tell you with absolute certainty is that Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are back, back, back as Neo and Trinity, respectively. How, exactly, they reunite in The Matrix 4 is still subject to debate, but previous set videos have hinted...

Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and writer-director Lana Wachowski have officially returned to “The Matrix,” 17 years after saying goodbye to the franchise in the polarizing last entry of the original trilogy “The Matrix Revolutions.” The San Francisco Examiner spotted the Warner Bros. production kicking off filming in the Chinatown section of the Bay Area with stars Reeves and Moss. The actors are returning to their iconic roles of Neo and Trinity, but “Matrix” fans would hardly know that from the first batch of set photos and video from the Examiner. Reeves’ Neo is not looking anything like the cyber-warrior fans adore (the character’s trademark black sunglasses and clothing are missing). Instead, Neo just looks like Reeves stepped out to grab a coffee. Most “Matrix” fans probably wouldn’t expect to see Neo sporting a beanie and blue jeans. What does that mean for “Matrix 4”? Warner Bros. has yet to reveal...

Warner Bros.’ official announcement about the next “Matrix” sequel (the film is untitled but will be the fourth feature in the franchise) included confirmation that series stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss would be returning to their iconic roles. A “Matrix” film would be nothing without the involvement of Neo and Trinity in some capacity. The same could be said for Agent Smith, the original trilogy’s villain, famously played by Hugo Weaving. Agent Smith is one of the most pivotal characters in “The Matrix” franchise, so it seemed reasonable for fans to expect the character to pop up in the upcoming fourth movie. Unfortunately, Weaving will not be involved in the project. The actor confirmed to Time Out London that he’s sitting “Matrix 4” out because of scheduling conflicts with his theater performance of “The Visit.”

In what will be 18 years since the last sequels arrived, The Matrix franchise is being reloaded. It was announced back in August that Keanu Reeves is set to don his trenchcoat and glasses to play Neo once more in The Matrix 4, coming from franchise co-creator Lana Wachowski, and today, Warner Bros. officially assigned the much-anticipated movie a release date.

“Empire” came in like a lion in the winter of January 2015 and with the premiere of its sixth and final season Tuesday, the Fox hip-hop drama has no intention of going out like a lamb.
As the series begins to come to a close, TheWrap spoke with co-creators Lee Daniels and Danny Strong, stars Taraji P. “I was surprised, honestly,” Daniels told TheWrap via email. “I was told that it was possible this could happen but it has become realer and realer the closer we get to the end and I am sad. Sad that our show is done. ‘Empire,’ in my opinion, really changed the direction and future of TV.

The Matrix 4 is happening! Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will reprise their roles, with Lana Wachowski set to write and direct.
The question about whether we'd ever see Neo again after the end of The Matrix Revolutions has been answered: The Matrix 4 is officially in the works at Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures, with co-creator Lana Wachowski set to write, direct, and produce. Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will also reprise their roles as Neo and Trinity, respectively, according to Variety. Production could begin on the film "at the top of 2020," per the outlet.

Camera crews with Fox drama Empire were spotted filming Tuesday morning in the same Chicago neighborhood where Jussie Smollett told police he was attacked in January.
NBC 5 Chicago obtained photos of several production trucks and set security near the corner of McClurg and North Water Street. That’s just one block from the overpass where Smollett said two masked men beat him, and yelled racial and homophobic slurs on Jan. 29, although police later said the incident was staged.
The TV station also got a glimpse of a city permit that said “Fox Entertainment Group – Empire” requested permission to film at the location from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Smollett’s character Jamal Lyon was written out of the final episodes of Season 5 of the Fox hip-hop drama. The actor’s last appearance in April showed his character tying the knot with Kai (Toby Onwumere), in TV’s first wedding of black gay characters.

Well, it’s official: Jussie Smollett will not be returning to “Empire.”
On Wednesday, Fox Entertainment CEO Charlie Collier told reporters at the Television Critics Association press tour that “Empire” co-creator Lee Daniels was correct, Smollett won’t be back for the show’s final season — even though Fox extended the actor’s option for Season 6 when the hip-hop drama was renewed, before they knew it was coming to an end.
And now that we know for sure the former “Empire” star truly is not returning, fans have to be wondering what will become of his character, Jamal Lyon — who wed his fiance Kai (Toby Onwumere) on the final episode of Season 5 in which Smollett was featured — when the show returns for its sixth and final season this fall.

“Sense8” fans fought hard for a proper ending when Netflix cancelled the series after its second-season cliffhanger. The streaming service didn’t give the show a whole new season to continue its story, but they did greenlight a farewell movie to wrap things up. Titled “Amor Vincit Omnia” (which translates to “Love Conquers All”), it aired last June, and now it’s in the race for Emmys, where it could earn up to 24 nominations. Scroll down for its complete list of Emmy submissions.
“Pose” could make history in drama categories with its unprecedented representation of transgender talent in front of and behind the camera, and “Sense8” could do the same in long form categories. Jamie Clayton has been singled out among her group of psychically linked heroes for consideration as a lead actress, while series co-creator Lana Wachowski was put forward for writing and directing — both women are trans.

The made-for-tv movie was a programming staple for the broadcast networks in the 1970s and 1980s. While it fell out of favor in the 1990s and was even dropped as an Emmy Awards category for three years beginning in 2011, it has been on an upswing as of late. This year, 21 telefilms are in contention for the five nominations that will be revealed on July 12.
All 22,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 24 to cast their 2019 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for their favorite TV movies. In the past, voters were limited in the number of telefilms that they could put forth. In 2017 that cap (which was usually 10 per category) was lifted. And, as opposed to the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally.

“Empire” will return to Fox in the fall, but one of its most famous cast members will likely not be joining for the new season. In a pair of announcements on Tuesday, the network revealed that the series has been renewed for a Season 6, but that cast member Jussie Smollett is not returning to the show at this time.
A statement from Fox Entertainment and 21st Century Fox TV read, “By mutual agreement, the studio has negotiated an extension to Jussie Smollett’s option for season six, but at this time there are no plans for the character of Jamal to return to ‘Empire.'”
Accompanying the Season 6 renewal news, Fox Entertainment president Michael Thorn saluted the show’s creative team and avoided addressing Smollett by name. “We want to thank everyone on the show – Taraji, Terrence and the entire cast, as well as Lee, Danny, Brett, Sanaa, Brian, Francie,...

“Empire” has been renewed by Fox for a sixth season, one week ahead of its Season 5 finale, though star Jussie Smollett’s fate on the series as the character Jamal Lyon is still uncertain.
“By mutual agreement, the studio has negotiated an extension to Jussie Smollett’s option for season six, but at this time there are no plans for the character of Jamal to return to ‘Empire,” Fox Entertainment and 20th Century Fox TV said in a joint statement Tuesday.
After news of the renewal broke, TheWrap obtained this statement from a representative for Smollett: “We’ve been told that Jussie will not be on ‘Empire’ in the beginning of the season but he appreciates they have extended his contract to keep Jamal’s future open. Jussie Smollett’s final episode of “Empire” Season 5 (and possibly his last episode ever) aired Wednesday night on Fox, tying the knot for Jamal (Smollett) and Kai (Toby Onwumere) and tying the hip-hop drama’s series low among adults in the sought-after 18-49 demographic.
Coming in with the 1.1 rating the series has been hovering around since it first hit its low last month with the second episode to air after Smollett’s arrest, “Empire” tied with “Chicago Fire” as the No. 2 show of the night in the key demo, with Wednesday’s winner being CBS’ “Survivor.”
Over on The CW’s primetime block, the episode of “Riverdale” featuring the late Luke Perry’s final scenes ticked up from last week’s hour among the 18-49 crowd.
NBC, CBS and Fox tied for first in ratings, each with a 1.0 rating/5 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic. NBC was first in viewers with 7.6 million,...
