One of the most iconic pieces of movie poster artwork of all time is the original art for Steven Spielberg’s horror classic Jaws, the work of an artist by the name of Roger Kastel.
Bloody Disgusting is sad to learn this week that Kastel, who also painted the equally iconic poster for The Empire Strikes Back, has passed away at the age of 91.
The legendary Jaws art, which has been parodied and ripped off countless times over the years, was originally created as new cover art for Peter Benchley’s novel. That paperback artwork was eventually purchased by Universal, who used it as the art for Spielberg’s movie.
Kastel recalled his process in the documentary The Shark Is Still Working, “I did a very rough sketch, and [the publisher] said ‘That’s great, just make the shark realistic and bigger. Make him very much bigger!'” Kastel of course obliged,...

I took some time off this week. Unfortunately, my wife and I lost our little puppy son, Logan, who was a big part of our lives for nine years. If you've been a regular reader of my writing on Daily Dead, chances are he was on my lap while it was being written. Reading comic books and writing and horror has always been a great source of comfort for me, so I wanted to share some news that has me really looking forward to November 8th: the date when Count Crowley returns in Count Crowley: Mediocre Midnight Monster Hunter. Details are below, along with a look at the main cover from Lukas Ketner and the variant from Francesco Francavilla:
Eager fright fans won't have to wait much longer for a new chapter starring their favorite horror host, for the incredible team of David Dastmalchian, Lukas Ketner, Lauren Affe, and...

One of the most exciting comic book industry announcements this year has been the formation of Dstlry, a new creator-owned publisher where the creators own part of the company, including writers and artists such as James Tynion IV, Scott Snyder, Jock, and more. Taking its name after the whiskey aging process, the debut publication is cleverly titled The Devil's Cut, and is a collection of 11 short stories, eight of which lead into full series.
One of those teams creating a full series is James Tynion and Christian Ward, who have been working on a haunted house epic titled Spectregraph, which is also the first story in the collection. We're thrilled to exclusively reveal a new direct-to-consumer variant cover for The Devil's Cut from Christian Ward for "Spectregraph" available only through www.dstlry.co, along with some incredible concept art!

A cursed production? A screening of a long-lost movie goes wrong?! The Midnite Show cover and description immediately has me thinking that this story would fit in well with Popcorn and The Monster Squad, so I'm super excited to dig into the first of four issues this October from Cullen Bunn, Brian Hurtt, Bill Crabtree, and Jim Campbell:
From the Press Release: Supernatural horror fans can scream with glee as Dark Horse Comics presents an entirely new taste of terror in The Midnite Show. The four-issue series reunites the creators of The Sixth Gun, Cullen Bunn, Brian Hurtt, and Bill Crabtree. Joined by letterer Jim Campbell (The Great British Bump-Off), they tell the tale of a cursed movie production and the horror fans caught in the creepy creature crossover dead set on bringing their nightmares to life.

Last year, Goosebumps and Fear Street creator R.L. Stine teamed up with Boom Studios for a four-issue limited comic book series called Stuff of Nightmares: The Monster Makers – and the Tpb collection of those issues can be purchased at This Link. About a year ago, comic book author James Tynion IV was on a long drive back to New York City from a friend’s engagement upstate when he got an email from French artist Elsa Charretier asking him if he’d be interested in writing the script for a short film she and longtime partner Pierrick Colinet were making.
The reaction from Tynion, the best-selling creator who has several comics on the go such as Something Is Killing the Children and Department of Truth as well as a Substack comic newsletter, was an almost immediate no. “I’m working on a million things, I don’t have time for this,” Tynion thought.
“By the time I got back to the city, I got an idea in my head, and I was like, ‘Yes, I want to do this,’” Tynion recalled in a Zoom conversation with The Hollywood Reporter.

Last month, we had the great pleasure of exclusively revealing Francesco Francavilla's variant cover for Archie Comics' The Return of Chilling Adventures in Sorcery, and as the spooky season creeps ever closer, we're now excited to exclusively debut Vincenzo Federici's interior penciled pages from The Return of Chilling Adventures in Sorcery (featuring Madam Satan getting up to macabre mischief on the mortal plane now that she's escaped Hell), along with development art by Vincenzo Federici, Liana Kangas, and Corin Howell!
Here's what Vincenzo had to say about bringing Madam Satan to life:
"Working on Madam Satan adventures is an incredible visual experience. First of all, it's amazing to have the opportunity to draw such great characters from both Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, since my wife and I are fans of the TV shows. My approach is to be respectful of the character design by giving them my personal touch.

Back in October of 2013, artist Francesco Francavilla and writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa forever changed the landscape of Archie Comics when they unleashed zombies in Riverdale in their highly popular horror comic series Afterlife with Archie.

Here's what Francavilla had to say about how he was able to tap into his love of cats to help bring new horror artwork to Archie Comics this fall:
I was very excited when Archie Comics asked me to do a cover for the new title Chilling Adventures Of Salem! You see, I'm cat people: I'm currently taking care of an indoor cat and at least 3-4 outdoor...

Gothic horror at its finest returns on February 2nd, 2022 with the latest installment of Manor Black! From creators Cullen Bunn, Brian Hurtt, and Tyler Crook, we have details on Manor Black: Fire in the Blood and a look at artwork from the first issue:
"The powerful and ancient blood sorcerer Roman Black has taken a young fire mage under his wing after she has done the impossible—taken her magic house’s totem spirit inside herself. But the totem is powerful, and may be impossible to control, especially when Roman’s children begin to see the young mage as a threat.
Roman Black treads dangerous waters in resisting the Descent—the ancient tradition of choosing a successor and transcending the mortal world. His own father held out against this inevitable fate, and the repercussions through the House of Blood were terrifying. Now, a tale of unrelenting terror from Roman's past unfolds.

"Acclaimed author Ben Percy and superstar artist Francesco Francavilla have collaborated on Wereworld, a new illustrated novella about a year of increasing terror in a small Minnesota town. The supernatural novella will be published by digital publisher NeoText this fall.
What if The Purge were supernatural? What if, instead of one night a year, the world went wild once a month? When the moon was full? What if the contagion was spreading among the population—and no one knew who was infected—only that the violence was growing more severe and widespread? You couldn’t trust anyone—not your neighbors, your friends, or even your family.

Veteran DC Comics and Batman scribe Scott Snyder is teaming up with superstar artist Tony Daniel for a new monthly series called Nocternal. The book, which will be the first published under Snyder’s new creator-owned imprint at Image Comics, Best Jackett Press, also includes colorist Tomeu Morey, letterer Deron Bennett, and editor Will Dennis.
“Nocternal takes place 10 years after the world is plunged into an everlasting night that turns all living creatures into monstrous ‘shades.’ Enter Valentina ‘Val’ Riggs, a skilled ‘ferryman’ who transports people and goods along deadly unlit roads with her heavily illuminated eighteen-wheeler,” reads the book’s description in a press release. “When an old man promising sanctuary offers Val a job to drive him and his granddaughter up through the Rocky Mountains, she takes it, hoping there might be some truth to his claim. Late last week we lost one of the greats, a creator of great importance and influence. On 25th June legendary inker Joe Sinnott passed away. I didn’t feel my understanding of the complexities of an inkers work were enough to give the man a proper send off. But Joe’s work was such an integral part of the Silver Age I have to mark his passing in some way. Staggeringly Joe worked for sixty years, predominantly for Marvel, working on all of the top books and being in demand from all the top artists from the bullpen to ink their work. If you break those years down into numbers it makes it all the more impressive that he could turn out quality, inspiring work all on time. I’m talking two hundred and five issues of Fantastic Four. Fifty plus issues of Thor, over thirty issues on both Avengers and Captain America!
