Netflix is continuing to slowly build out its offerings of live sports.
There’s a very clear strategy unfolding at Netflix when it comes to live sports. Its Netflix Cup live golf tournament from November was the service's first attempt at offering any sports event, and was packed with big-name personalities from its docuseries “Formula 1: Drive to Survive and “Full Swing.” The company is returning to that strategy for its next live sports event, a tennis match between two of the biggest names in the sport.
Netflix will host a live tennis match between Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal on Sunday, March 3. Alcaraz is the second-ranked men’s tennis player in the world, while Nadal is a legend of the sport who may return for his last season in 2024. The tennis match leaves room for yet more questions about Netflix’s live sports intentions. Sign Up $6.99+ / month netflix.com...

Eddie Merrins, the gentlemanly golf pro at the Bel-Air Country Club who taught the game to the likes of Bing Crosby, Ringo Starr, George C. Scott, Dean Martin, Celine Dion and Jack Nicholson, has died. He was 91.
Merrins died Wednesday after a long illness, according to UCLA, where he coached for 14 years. His son Michael had launched a GoFundMe campaign this year to help the family with expenses.
Nicknamed “The Little Pro,” the 5-foot-7 Mississippi native played on the PGA Tour before serving as Bel-Air’s head pro from 1962 until he was asked to step aside in 2003. However, he remained a beloved fixture at the fabled club as pro emeritus in a jacket/sweater, tie and white driving cap.
Remarkably, Bel Air, which opened in 1925, has had only three head pros: Joe Novak, Merrins and now Dave Podas.

Netflix is adamant that it’s not interested in live sports.
“We are in the sports business, but we’re in the part of the sports business that we bring the most value to, which is the drama of sport, Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos said on the company’s third-quarter earnings call.
Sarandos was referring to sports docu-series such as Drive To Survive, Full Swing, Quarterback and Beckham.
He added that there was no “core change” in its live sports strategy. This comes after Netflix set its first live sports event.

Live sports are at the center of the next wave of streaming evolution as live TV streaming services rely on them to attract and retain subscribers and subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) platforms — like Max, Paramount+, and Peacock — are beefing up their exclusive sports content to round out their offerings. The streamer, which has mounted a few live events in the past year, has set its first live sports event — one that also reinforces the company brand. Wyndham Clark, a 29-year-old PGA tour golfer, claimed first prize at this year’s U.S. Open, which took place June 15-18 in Los Angeles. Sunday night’s victory makes it the Denver native’s first career major championship win; just last month, Clark celebrated his first PGA Tour win at the Wells Fargo Championship in North Carolina.
“This is now my second win on the PGA tour, and the first one was surreal and this one is surreal. It hasn’t quite hit me yet…. It’s been a whirlwind of the last five, six weeks. [I’m] just so blessed and humbled to be here,” Clark said in the post-tournament press conference.
Clark finished strong with a -10 (“Although I made a couple bogeys and it seemed like maybe the rails were coming off…. I’m really pleased with myself with how I performed,” he said Sunday night), followed by runner-up Rory McIlroy of Ireland,...

For the first time in 75 years, one of golf’s four major tournaments has returned to the city of Los Angeles.
The United States Open championship, now in its 123rd year, is taking place on the Los Angeles Country Club’s North Course for the very first time (also making it the first time a major championship has been held at the club in general). This lack of major championship presence at the 126-year-old course – some 325 acres in the middle of Beverly Hills — is largely by design; infamous for its discriminatory exclusivity (the club had no Jewish members until 1977, and the first Black member was admitted in 1991), the club has opened its gates to the public to host the Los Angeles Open four times (most recently in 1940) and the 2017 Walker Cup.

While his accomplishments in the sport are well documented, fans have questions about the woman by his side cheering him on at tournaments. Here’s more about Fowler’s wife Allison Stokke.

The creators of the Netflix series Full Swing, a compelling look inside the lives of professional golfers, benefitted from a stroke of luck. As they were working on Season 1, the rival Saudi-backed Liv Tour sprang up, posing an existential threat to the venerable PGA Tour.
“It’s certainly, I would argue, probably the [most] unprecedented, controversial year in maybe any sport,” said executive producer Chad Mumm during an appearance at Deadline’s Contenders Television: Documentary + Unscripted virtual event. “There’s certainly been other attempts and breakaway leagues in the history of sport, but never in the middle of a season, never when you’re sharing a locker room with guys that are leaving or rumored to be leaving and playing in pairings with them.”

Thailand, Sep 20 (Ians) Rayhan Thomas still has vivid memories of how close he came to creating history at the 2018 Asia Pacific Amateur Championships.
He shot 4-over on the first day but fought back over the next three days to get within a whisker of the title that would have given him a tee time at the 2019 Masters. He ended Tied-second alongside Keita Nakajima, who went on become World No. 1 amateur, and behind winner Takumi Kanaya, who is now making waves on the pro Tour.
This will be Thomas’ fifth appearance at the Aac, where his best is second place and he has made the cut each time.
Thomas, looking forward to the 2022 edition in Chonburi, Thailand said, “I’m playing a lot better. The game is feeling pretty good. The Eisenhower Cup (World Amateur Team Championship) was a lot of fun.
“I had a stress fracture in my wrist just before the post-season.

California, Sep 15 (Ians) A lot has changed for Sahith Theegala, but the Indian-American says nothing has changed for him. From being 351st in the World at the end of 2021, Theegala is right now 55th.

An intense desire for live sports has some TV executives taking a new swing at golf.
NBC Sports is hoping viewership of its Sunday broadcast of a charity match between Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson and Rickie Fowler and Matthew Wolff is indicative of interest in a range of golf games set to be played in June and over the summer – some of the first live sports telecasts to surface since the pandemic scuttled most outdoor events.
