Similar to Grant Gustin, who first appeared on Arrow season 2 before getting his own spin-off show following the overwhelmingly positive reception, Melissa Benoist too originally auditioned for Arrow. However, the role she auditioned for was a far cry from the whimsy optimistic Supergirl she’d go on to play in the following years, as it was much darker in tone.
Although she managed to leave a lasting impact on the casting director, which later came in handy during her selection for Girl of Steel, she lost out on playing Oliver’s sister to Willa Holland.

Years before getting her own CW show, Melissa Benoist auditioned for the role of Thea Queen, Oliver Queen’s sister. But following Willa Holland’s greater sense of duality as an actor, she was chosen over the Glee star for the role.

Milly Alcock’s work as a younger iteration of Rhaenyra Targaryen in House of the Dragon has given fans a good idea of just how talented she is as an actress. Her range has been one many have familiarised themselves with and so learning about the news of her casting as the titular character in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow only proved to be the cherry on top.
Milly Alcock in House of the Dragon.
With the many genres she has managed to work in, there is no denying that sometimes things may overlap. Other times genres get revisited. Today’s audience enjoys a mix of everything. Therefore, the number of fantasy projects is growing manifold. However, Alcock does not see herself in a fantastical role in the future. Rather, she wants to steer clear of it.

Bassem Youssef is an Egyptian-American comedian, television host, and even a surgeon. He is best known for hosting Al Bernameg, a satirical news show that tackled Egyptian politics with humour. This was the first show of its kind in the region, and it became hugely popular, garnering millions of viewers weekly.
Bassem Youssef, a vocal supporter of Palestine, pulled no punches as he flayed Israel for its war in Gaza as civilian casualties continue to mount in the war-torn strip. Bassem Youssef’s career trajectory from a cardiothoracic surgeon to a renowned comedian and satirist is indeed remarkable. His ability to use humour to tackle sensitive political issues, particularly in the Middle East, has earned him a significant following and recognition on the global stage.
Youssef’s satirical approach, akin to Jon Stewart’s style, allows him to dissect complex political narratives and challenge authority with sharp wit and insight.

This April marks the 10-year anniversary of Bassem Youssef’s final telecast of Al Bernameg. At its apex, the Egyptian satirical news show drew 40 million viewers and prompted comparisons between its host/co-creator and Jon Stewart before ultimately proving too controversial to remain on the air — or for Youssef and his family to safely remain in Egypt. They relocated to Los Angeles in 2016, and he’s spent the years since recalibrating, booking occasional acting roles and working on his stand-up.
He says he’s gotten his comedy groove back, now selling out shows across the U.S. and Europe. But that’s not why Youssef has been in the news so much of late. Starting with a viral appearance on Piers Morgan Uncensored, during which Youssef visibly unsettled the host with his dark satire of Islamophobia and critique of the Israeli government’s then-fresh response to the Oct. 7 Hamas attack,...

Christopher Nolan is a renowned filmmaker. Known for his out-of-the-box thinking and innovative filmmaking techniques, he has never failed to leave audiences in awe. Oppenheimer serves as the latest example of the filmmaker’s cinematic genius. The autobiographical thriller was a success in every right.
A hit with the masses and critics alike, the film introduced some nuances of the art of filmmaking. These were a product of Nolan’s filmmaking intellect or some good old technological advances. Either way, watching Oppenheimer is an unparalleled cinematic experience. In one scene, Nolan’s use of practical effects just took things up a notch.

There have been countless iterations of Superman in the world of multimedia, all trying to showcase a different perspective and take on the superhero. One of the biggest and most unique among the several properties in which this character is an integral part has to be CW’s Superman and Lois TV series.

Instead of focusing on the extraordinary exploits of the Symbol of Hope, this series focuses more on the personal life of the individual as Clark Kent rather than Superman, which was the reason why many liked the show so much. Although the ratings weren’t something to brag about, they were still respectable enough to not let the show be canceled like it has. And with that, it’s revealed that WB had made this decision because of the upcoming Superman in the Dcu.

Well, it seems that the Dcu is indeed playing some kind of game that the people do not like at all. With Superman and Lois being two integral characters of cinematic storytelling, it comes naturally that the two characters will indeed be seen in James Gunn’s upcoming film Superman: Legacy.
But to cancel a pre-existing CW series by the name of Superman and Lois so that there’s no confusion for the people… is quite a dumb move. Well, that’s exactly what Warner Bros. did before the release of Superman: Legacy!

Updated with James Gunn comment: Egyptian-born comedian Bassem Youssef claims he lost a role in James Gunn’s Superman Legacy movie due to his public support of Palestine during a Piers Morgan: Uncensored October interview, however, a source close to production tells Deadline, that’s not the case: Youssef was never formerly offered the role.
We hear that Youssef taped an audition pre-actors strike for the role of Rumaan Harjadi. However, by the time Gunn turned in his final shooting strike post writers’ strike ending in late September, that role was cut. This was all before the tragic events of Oct. 7, 2023. Hence per the Superman Legacy production source — no official ask was made to Youssef. Given that the actors strike was still ongoing in late September, and didn’t end until early November, no communication about Youssef obtaining or not obtaining the role would have been communicated to him.

After years of anticipation and a changing landscape, the DC Universe will have a reboot with Superman Legacy. The visionary filmmaker James Gunn has been entrusted with the monumental task of spearheading a brand-new cinematic story. This story is set to begin with the chapter of the one who started it all – Superman.
James Gunn with Peter Safran
The Last Son of Krypton will fly back to the silver screens in 2025, now under the direction of Gunn. Fans will see a younger version of The Man of Steel exploring his internal struggles in a world skeptical of his ideals. Fans have been waiting for the movie for ages, but its excitement has recently hit a snag. Some recent developments have cast a shadow over the project, embroiling it in unexpected controversy.

Bassem Youssef caused a stir on social media this week when he claimed he lost a role in James Gunn’s “Superman: Legacy” due to his vocal support of Palestine.
Youssef went viral last year following his October appearance on “Piers Morgan: Uncensored,” during which he used his signature dark humor as he criticized Israel. “They said Israel is the only military force in the world that warns civilians before bombing them,” he said. “How fucking cute! That is so nice of them because with this logic, if Russian troops started warning Ukrainians before bombing their houses, we’re cool with Putin, right?”
In a new interview with Salon this week, Youssef addressed his comments and asserted his belief that his role in ‘Superman: Legacy’ was written out because of the Morgan interview. “I was a little bit bitter about losing the role, and I was kind of very sad,...

Exclusive: Rising comedian Paul Elia has set a Christmas Eve premiere date for his debut special, Detroit Player, the first ever shot at the Detroit House of Comedy, which came together over the course of three October tapings. Directed by Elia’s longtime friend Dan Ringey, with whom he previously collaborated on the indie crime thriller Dirty, the special will be available for a month on Mint Comedy.
Elia came to shoot his special after spending years performing stand-up in many unlikely (and awkward) scenarios, in order to pay his rent. He performed in a Dubai mall (and almost got arrested). Soon after, he performed at a private event for Saudi royalty. With Detroit Player, he explores authenticity, censorship and what it means to “hustle” (while avoiding arrests abroad).
Hailing from The LowKey Company & Avesta Entertainment, the special is produced by Bassem Youssef, Azhar Usman and Danny Mooney.

Egyptian satirist Bassem Youssef is launching a reality series in which best friends, couples and family members are flown to a remote exotic island in Abu Dhabi to face their biggest fear: learning to become healthy. Propagate International has launched sales at Mipcom Cannes on The Reset, which will see contestants put through an immersive, medically progressive plant-based wellness program that seems impossible at first, but within days completely changes their minds, bodies, and souls. Each episode follows one couple on their journey as they are pushed outside their comfort zone. Propagate is selling this week and Tom Forman (Extreme Makeover: Home Edition) is producing. Youssef is a comedian satirist and former cardiologist who has previously been compared to The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart. He hosted Al Bernameg, a first-of-its-kind political satire show in the Middle East.

Special Ops: Lioness agent Cruz Manuelos (Laysla De Oliveira) may have successfully neutralized her "Ace of Spades," but Taylor Sheridan's season finale offers little catharsis. "Gone Is the Illusion of Order," an episode title that reflects the can of worms opened up by the mission, introduces a major problem for Lioness leader Joe (Zoe Saldaña) and her bosses at the CIA, Kaitlyn Meade (Nicole Kidman) and Byron Westfield (Michael Kelly): It turns out the White House didn't want billionaire terrorist Asmar Ali Amrohi (Bassem Youssef) dead, after all. The revelation leaves the team at odds with American leadership, who reap the benefits of instability in the Middle East, setting the stage for a clandestine political showdown that will play out in the months ahead.

A government-owned Egyptian broadcaster has responded to controversy over the casting of a Black actress to play Cleopatra in the Netflix docudrama series “African Queens,” which streams from May 10, by announcing production of its own big-budget Cleopatra doc.
The fact that Britain’s Adele James, who is of mixed heritage, plays the first-century Egyptian ruler as a queen with African roots in the Netflix original produced by Jada Pinkett Smith has been sparking an uproar in Egypt. Ever since the trailer dropped last month local academics and others are claiming that Cleopatra, who was born in the Egyptian city of Alexandria in 69 BC and belonged to a Greek-speaking dynasty, was of European descent and not Black.
In response to what they claim is Netflix’s falsification of Egypt’s history, the Al Wathaeqya channel – which is a subsidiary of Egypt’s state-affiliated United Media Services – has announced start of production...

Washington, D.C. — Comedian Jon Stewart was awarded the Kennedy Center’s Mark Twain Prize on Sunday in a raucous affair that celebrated his genius at exposing hypocrisy and injustice wherever they occur.
“This is incredible,” said an emotional Stewart upon receiving the miniature bust of Twain that followed two hours of roasting and tender testimonials by former co-stars from “The Daily Show” and others. Stewart, who last year began hosting an Apple TV+ talk show “The Problem With Jon Stewart,” was presented the award by a 9/11 first responder and a wounded Air Force veteran — representing two causes he has famously championed. The pair had been part of the audience alongside other responders and veterans invited for the occasion.
Emerging from a one-year Covid hiatus, the Twain event featured Jimmy Kimmel, Steve Carell, 2020 awardee Dave Chappelle, Pete Davidson, Samantha Bee, Ed Helms, Olivia Munn and on video, John Oliver and Stephen Colbert,...

Egyptian heart surgeon-turned-satirist Bassem Youssef left Egypt in 2014 and relocated to the U.S. after his megahit show “El Bernameg” (“The Program”), on which he snarked at top pols of all stripes, became too dangerous to produce under the country’s current president, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.

Representation and inclusion on TV appear to be on the steady uptick, but a closer look shows that progress is a minuscule move of the needle. We are seeing more black, Latino and Asian representation, but as we look deeper into specific portrayals within these ethnicities and races we have seen a stagnant pool of stereotypes — especially with regard to Middle Eastern and North African (Mena) actors.
According to a new study presented by Mena Arts Advocacy Coalition (Maac) titled “Terrorists and Tyrants: Middle Eastern and North African (Mena) Actors in Prime Time and Streaming Television”, there is a major gap in representation when it comes to Mena actors. When Mena actors are on TV they largely portray — you guessed it — terrorists and tyrants, stereotypical roles that have existed since the dawn of Hollywood.

“Instead of being petty and getting all wrapped up in their egos, they should embrace the likes of Michelle Wolf,” Youssef wrote in a statement provided exclusively to Deadline. “[She] proves that not even the strongest man in the world is above satire. And that’s what makes America really great.”
Youssef, often called “the Jon Stewart of Egypt,” hosted Al Bernameg, a wildly popular late night comedy show that launched in 2011 in the wake of the Arab Spring. The documentary Tickling Giants—directed by Sara Taksler, a former Daily Show senior producer—tracked Youssef as he became a sensation in his country, and...

It took “fake news” to bring Ed Helms back to Comedy Central. Since leaving “The Daily Show” in 2006, Helms has found plenty of success as a comedic actor in both TV and film, starting with “The Office,” and then, of course, “The Hangover” trilogy and a successful voice over career in animated hits like “The Lorax” and “Captain Underpants.”
But Helms missed his time satirizing the news, especially given his experience working alongside legendary talent like Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Steve Carell, Samantha Bee, and many more. Now he’s back behind the desk, at least for one night, as the fictional host of Comedy Central’s “The Fake News with Ted Nelms.”
“I’ve just been missing being a part of the media commentary world ever since I left ‘The Daily Show,’ Helms said. “I really feel back in the saddle in a way. It’s really scratching that itch.
