Exclusive: Sony Pictures Animation is in development on a new fantasy-adventure feature from Matt Braly, the creator of Disney’s multiple Emmy-nominated animated series, Amphibia.
Braly comes to the as-yet-untitled project after working for the studio as a storyboard artist on The Mitchells vs the Machines, the Academy Award-nominated feature produced by Lord Miller, which was released on Netflix in 2021.
Drawing on his own cultural background and personal history, the film tells the story of a young boy who goes on an emotional journey to a fantastical world of Thai spirits where he hopes to have his illness cured. Braly will direct from his script written with Rebecca Sugar (Cartoon Network’s Steven Universe).
Chronicling the adventures of the 13-year-old Thai-American Anne Boonchuy (Brenda Song) within a fantasy world full of frogs, toads, and giant insects, Braly’s show Amphibia ran for three seasons on Disney Channel from 2019-2022. A renowned animator,...

Walt Disney’s announcement that Bob Chapek would be stepping down as CEO and the retired Bob Iger was replacing him effective immediately has stunned the industry, with Hollywood taking the news with a mix of shock, confusion and (in most cases) approval.
A rival studio source noted that the timing was suspect and that it was less of a shock that Chapek had been removed than that Iger had agreed to return. “There is a real question of what is expected of (Iger),” they said, asking for anonymity, adding that it is generally expected that he would undo most of Chapek’s structural choices.
Multiple industry sources expressed shock at Iger’s return because the former (and now present) CEO so often declared that he and his wife Willow Bay were enjoying retirement. Moreover, this transition occurred just before Thanksgiving week and days before the theatrical release of Walt...

The days are getting longer, the nights are getting shorter and the temperature is occasionally spiking to stay-inside-and-leave-the-ac-on-all-day levels. But don’t worry, if you have one of these summery bursts of springtime weather, there’s certainly plenty to watch. This week alone we have a series about weirdo LA icon Angelyne, a new adaptation of a steamy Sally Rooney novel and J.K. Simmons and Sissy Spacek unlocking a portal to another world. That’ll help if you’re stuck inside right?

This weekend, the second-to-last episode of “Amphibia” airs on the Disney Channel.
The series, created by Matt Braly (a veteran of classic Disney series “Gravity Falls” and “Big City Greens”) was disarming in its simplicity, at least initially. When the show started out, it was about a young Thai-American girl named Ann Boonchuy (Brenda Song), who is mysteriously transported to Amphibia, a world populated with andromorphic frog creatures, and falls in with the Planter family – Hop Pop (Bill Farmer), young Sprig (Justin Felbinger) and even-younger tadpole Polly (Amanda Leighton).
But what starts out as a fish-out-of-water comedy soon became much, much more epic. Ancient feuds were revealed, more human characters entered the upside-down frog world and in the third season, the Planters were transported to our world, which led to more fish (frog?) out-of-water stuff but here. It’s been a wild ride. And now, after three seasons and 56 episodes and various shorts,...

It’s not quite the “Gravity Falls” reboot/reunion that fans are hoping for, but it’s close: Creator Alex Hirsch will guest star on a Season 2 episode of Disney Channel’s “Amphibia” that pays homage to the animated cult fave.
In the “Amphibia” episode titled “Wax Museum,” the show’s family travels to a mysterious roadside oddities museum that looks and feels quite a bit like the Mystery Shack on “Gravity Falls.” Hirsch, who voiced Grunkle Stan on that show, will guest star as “The Curator,” a Stan-like character who owns the “Curiosity Hut” and features a frog custodian named “Frog Soos”.
“Amphibia” creator and executive producer Matt Braly worked as a storyboard artist and director on “Gravity Falls,” for which he won an Annie Award.
“I have always wanted to create a ‘Gravity Falls’ tribute in ‘Amphibia,'” Braly said. “I just didn’t know when or how.

With negotiations set to begin Tuesday for a new Animation Guild contract, more than 2,600 industry figures have signed a petition calling for pay equity for color stylists, the animation industry’s only predominantly female craft, whose artists set the look, lighting and palette of cartoons.
The 3,500-member Animation Guild, Iatse Local 839, hasn’t struck the industry since 1983, but leaders told their members recently that a strike this time around “is always a possibility, if not a probability.” The guild’s talks are separate from the recently concluded negotiations for a new film and TV contract covering some 43,000 members of Iatse’s 13 West Coast studio locals.
The petition, organized by the Animation Guild’s Color Stylist Committee, is yet another sign of the growing movement for gender pay equity in Hollywood’s historically female-majority crafts. As reported here exclusively last week, more than 3,300 industry figures have signed another petition calling...
