From the tiniest micro-organism to the far reaches of the universe, sci-fi adaptations have made a triumphant splash across multiple streaming platforms. For decades, the collective groans that routinely followed book-to-tv adaptation announcements were a given.
At the same time, many science fiction books are so steeped in lore, character motivations, politics, and scientific complexities that converting prose to a "show but don't tell" format is a tall task.
Star Trek, for instance, has historically been pretty cut and dry with its science. A phaser will vaporize you, and a transporter will, well, transport you.
Now, imagine explaining the three-body problem from a show but don't tell approach.
Thankfully, the rash of exciting new sci-fi adventures solves these riddles with filmmakers and writers who are passionate about the material.

David Harbour has suggested that Stranger Things is one of the many productions set to resume right away now that the actor’s strike is resolved.
“Harbour… enthusiastically conveyed his eagerness to return to Hawkins, Indiana. He emphasized a keen sense of urgency, suggesting that production might start up again in as little as a couple of days, when he was asked what was first on his post-strike schedule. After all, he also has the small matter of a massive Marvel blockbuster in the form of Thunderbolts on the horizon.”

For fans of "The Expanse" book series, one of the most surprising things to notice upon starting the show is the different structure. Whereas "Game of Thrones" was fairly straightforward at first, the debut season of "The Expanse" combined a lot of books 1 and 2, while saving parts of book 1 for season 2.
That might sound confusing, but it makes sense. The first book in the series, "Leviathan Wakes," is surprisingly small-scale; it centers around only two major point-of-view characters, an outlier from the rest of the series. The second book is when the number of Pov characters jumps up to four, which is much more representative of the series' general format. The books also have a tendency to drop its non-Holden point-of-view characters after each book, even if they're still alive, another storytelling approach that's a little more awkward in a TV show than it'd be in a book series.

Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck's hit science fiction novel series, "The Expanse," written under the joint pseudonym James S.A. Corey, has been adapted into an acclaimed television series of the same name. The story begins in a future where humanity has colonized the solar system. Factions on Earth, Mars, and space stations battle for supremacy. The series ran for six seasons, with its first three seasons airing on Syfy while Amazon Studios produced its later half -- sending it to stream on Prime Video.
With its interplanetary scope and impressive ensemble cast, "The Expanse" is one of the best sci-fi shows in recent memory and one of Prime Video's most underrated original series. The show is willing to take risks with its story, from the main characters dying to shocking twists every step of the way as the war for humanity's future unfolds. Here is a definitive ranking of...

After six amazing seasons, "The Expanse" remains one of the best science fiction shows we've seen in a long time. Based on the book series by James S.A. Corey (a pseudonym for the writing team of Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck), "The Expanse" depicts a universe where Earth, its former colonies on Mars, and the working-class residents of the Belt teeter on the edge of war. Beginning with a seemingly-simple mystery surrounding a missing woman, "The Expanse" expertly weaves together multiple narratives to create a plot full of political intrigue, cosmic horror, rising economic and social tensions, and terrible fates for everyone caught in the...

Science fiction shows come in many varieties. There are those that aim to be intellectual like Star Trek, space operas like Battlestar Galactica, and some that are more like fantasy set in space, like Star Wars. Tastes will vary on which of these are best, but regardless of rankings I think we can all agree that a good sci-fi show is a thing of beauty. And sadly rare to see. Enter the Expanse, a hard science fiction series adapted by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck from their own books. Both writers are former assistants of George R. R. Martin and

After a six-season run — three on Syfy, followed by another three on Prime Video — it was difficult to imagine "The Expanse" finding resolution in its infinite space. Based on the novel series by James S. A. Corey, the series' expansive universe had spun so many story threads that tying it all up seemed nearly impossible. In addition, Abraham and Franck told Polygon that the season 6 finale was more of "a natural pause point" for the story than a real ending, and the resulting season...

Whether viewers of The Expanse season 6 enjoy Marco Inaros as a villain or not, one thing’s for sure: everyone’s rooting for his downfall. The ironic thing is he could almost defeat himself through sheer pigheadedness if not for the fearless advice of a rising star in the Free Navy, a character by the name of Rosenfeld Guoliang, played by Kathleen Robertson. We asked creators Ty Franck and Daniel Abraham as well as showrunner Naren Shankar about the new dynamic Rosenfeld creates in the show.
Although Rosenfeld is a male character in the James S. A. Corey novels upon which The Expanse is based, both he and the television version act as a voice of reason within Marco’s inner circle. “She’s an established character [from the books], one of the Free Navy,” says Franck. “But more than anything we needed somebody for Marco to have conversations with and to be plotting and strategizing with,...

In the latest episode of The Expanse, Bobbie Draper reminds the Rocinante crew that they’re harboring a convicted felon, Clarissa Mao, and it’s easy for the audience to forget that she was in a maximum security prison on Earth for blowing up a ship full of innocent people in season 3. The forgiveness she earned from Amos in the intervening seasons has now been extended by Holden in this week’s most touching scene, and saving Bobbie’s life was a big part of her redemption arc.
Co-creator of The Expanse Ty Franck enjoys exploring the new dynamics that Clarissa, played wonderfully by Nadine Nicole, brings to the show. “More than anything it’s nice to see Amos have a friend… and Amos really likes [Clarissa]; they’re obviously growing much closer as friends, and that’s all nice,” he says. “But the other...

Although The Expanse rearranged the order of some character introductions over the years, each season for the most part followed the conflict of each successive book in the James S. A. Corey series. Season one followed Leviathan Wakes, season two followed Caliban’s War, and so on. But with the ninth and final novel recently released, how can the show possibly wrap up the story in a way that will satisfy fans and resolve the issues brought about by the introduction of alien technology into the solar system?
The short answer is: it doesn’t need to. Ty Franck, one half of the writing duo that wrote the novels and also writes for the show, told us in a recent interview, “We’re not doing the last three books in six episodes. There’s a natural stopping point after book six, or at least a natural pause point. So it...

Throughout its six seasons as one of the best sci-fi TV shows in recent memory, “The Expanse” has always seemed to thrive in certain extremes. From its basic cable origins to its three-year Prime Video run, the show has been at its best when it’s either at rest or its characters are in utter turmoil.
From a pure logistical standpoint, no other series has as full a sense of its world’s mechanics quite like “The Expanse.” Much of that comes from its source material, the books written by James S.A. Corey, the pseudonym of writing team Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck (who also write a good portion of the scripts for the new Season 6). The long-established geopolitical relationships between citizens of Earth, Mars, and the Belt complement the tactile nature of resources and equipment it takes to travel between those locations (and beyond them). Amazon Studios’ sci-fi drama The Expanse has always been a fighter, and it is gearing up to go out with a bang based on the key Season 5 episode titled “Gaugamela,” the script of which serves as the latest entry in Deadline’s It Starts On the Page, our series that highlights the scripts that serve as the creative backbones of the now-underway TV awards season.
The scripts are all being submitted for Emmy consideration this year and have been selected using criteria that includes critical acclaim, a range of networks and platforms, and a mix of established and lesser-known shows.
In November, Amazon gave an early and final renewal for a Season 6 of The Expanse just ahead of its 10-episode Season 5 premiere. It set in motion an endgame to the Alcon-produced series, which is based on the bestselling book series by James S.A. Corey (the nom de plume...

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for “The Expanse” Season 5 finale, “Nemesis Games.”]
All the way up until its enigmatic, red-hued final moments, Season 5 of “The Expanse” had its share of mammoth-scale moments. But in the season finale, the quietest ones might end up being the longest-lasting.
In the moment, the rescue of Naomi Nagata (Dominique Tipper) is certainly one of the most striking. Completing an arc that began with a daring hard vacuum escape, Naomi’s second untethered journey through space ends with the life-saving help of Bobbie Draper (Frankie Adams). As Naomi processes everything that’s happened to her since leaving her son, the camera stays on Tipper’s face.
“The length to which that scene goes on, it never cuts. You’re just with her,” executive producer and co-showrunner Naren Shakar said. “I remember the first time I saw it on the first director’s cut, and that’s essentially unchanged from what it was at that point.

Everyone sees themselves in the oppressed Belters of The Expanse, from liberal champions of the poor to elite-hating blue collar conservatives. On social media, fans proudly declare, “We are beltalowda!” using the collective pronoun in the Belter creole language to show their solidarity with their fellow downtrodden. But with Marco’s more extreme faction taking charge in season 5, how do the writers reconcile audience sympathy with the devastating terrorist actions on display?
Writer Daniel Abraham, who is in the writers room and who writes The Expanse novels with collaborator Ty Franck under the name James S. A. The Expanse has officially set course toward a bittersweet threshold crossed by many-a-beloved shows: an advance renewal for its final season.

The Expanse is coming to an end.
Amazon has ordered a sixth and final season of the sci-fi drama, three weeks ahead of its fifth season premiere.
Deadline has also revealed that Cas Anvar, who faced a string of sexual misconduct allegations earlier this year, will not be back for the final season.
The rest of the cast, including Steven Strait, Dominique Tipper, and Wes Chatham are expected to return.
The Expanse Season 5 is set to debut December 16 on Amazon Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories.
Instead of airing all episodes in one batch, the streamer is rolling them out weekly, in a similar vein to The Boys Season 2.

“The Expanse” has been renewed for Season 6 at Amazon, which will also be the show’s last.
The news comes ahead of the show’s fifth season on the streamer, which will debut on Dec. 16. This will mark the second time the show has come to an end.
“The Expanse” aired its first three seasons on Syfy, with the cable networking having cancelled the series back in 2019. Shortly after it was cancelled, it was reported that Amazon was in talks to continue the series, which is produced and fully financed by Alcon Television Group.
The series is set in the future where humanity has colonized the solar system and the people of Earth, Mars and the Asteroid Belt have long been in opposition with one another. When the crew of the Rocinante uncovers an ancient alien technology, a vast conspiracy begins to emerge, one that will bring the solar system to the brink of war.

Exclusive: Amazon Studios has set an end date for The Expanse. The popular sci-fi drama has received an early renewal for Season 6, which will be its last. Not returning for the final season is original cast member Cas Anvar, who faced a slew of sexual misconduct allegations during the summer. The rest of the cast, led by Steven Strait, and longtime Expanse showrunner Naren Shankar will be back.
The Season 6 renewal comes three weeks before the December 16 Season 5 debut on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories. I hear Season 6 tentatively is slated to begin production Janusary 20, with the target start date subject to change amid fluid pandemic conditions.
The Alcon-produced The Expanse, based on James S.A. Corey’s best-selling novels, originally was picked up by Syfy, where it aired for three seasons. Following its cancellation in 2018, the show’s army of passionate fans launched a massive Save Our Show campaign,...

Brace yourselves, screaming firehawks: Season 5 of “The Expanse” debuts on Amazon Prime Dec. 16. Amazon announced the news during the show’s New York Comic-Con virtual panel Thursday, along with a thrilling new trailer that you can watch right now at the top of the page.
In addition, Season 5 will take a page from “The Boys” Season 2 with the first three episodes available Dec. 16, after which the show will go weekly. We’re not shocked of course — that blend of binge-ability and weekly anticipation paid off hugely for “The Boys,” which saw an 89% spike in worldwide viewership from Season 1 thanks to that release strategy.
And well, it uh sure looks like things are getting much worse for the crew of the Rocinante despite their helping prevent a war over the first extrasolar human colony in Season 4, so being able to take it slow feels like a good thing. For instance, fresh...

Update Monday: The Expanse star Cas Anvar on Monday morning issued a statement regarding the independent investigation into sexual misconduct allegations that was launched by series studio Alcon Entertainment. “I welcome the independent investigation, respect that the women who have come forward should be heard, and will make myself fully available to participate in the process as appropriate so that I may refute these very serious claims that strike at the core of what I value,” he said.
Previous Froday: The Expanse studio Alcon Entertainment has launched an independent investigation after series’ star Cas Anvar this week faced numerous accusations of sexual harassment and sexual assault.
The controversy snowballed over the last couple of days, with more women coming forward, sharing their stories on Twitter, including screen shots of what they say were inappropriate messages from Anvar. None of the alleged sexual assault incidents happened on the set of the sci-fi series,...

“The Expanse” star Cas Anvar is currently the subject of an independent investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct, TheWrap has confirmed.
Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, authors of the series of novels upon which the show is based and producers on the show, revealed the existence of the investigation on Twitter on Friday.
“So one of the core cast of #TheExpanse has been accused of sexual misconduct,” Abraham wrote on Twitter. “We immediately passed these serious accusations onto the studio, Alcon. Alcon has engaged an independent firm to investigate this matter and takes these allegations very seriously.”
A further statement from the account under the duo’s pen name, James S.A. Corey, added, “Everyone is fully committed to the truth here. But they need a little time to do their work. Updates as I have them.”

At Avatars Inc, the Ana Xprize folks have taken their real-life contest of innovation in which scientists are asked to develop mechanical bodies that can be operated at a distance and placed the concept in the hands of science fiction’s best writers. To encourage aspiring authors to enter their own short stories involving avatar usage, these professionals imagined a near future where remote proxies could give humans experiences they could not otherwise have, and we spoke to Daniel Abraham, who writes The Expanse novels with Ty Franck under the pen name James S.A. Corey, about how he developed his contribution to the anthology.
Even if teams around the world weren’t already developing avatars to win the Xprize challenge issued in 2018, Abraham doesn’t find the idea of inhabiting a remote body all that implausible. “It’s a technology that I think we’ve all been moving toward,...

One thing that’s separated “The Expanse” from nearly all of its other space-set peers is its ability to recognize the difference between spectacle and scope. Telling a story centuries in the future and now spanning a multitude of potential solar systems with the ability to sustain life, the building blocks of this sci-fi series have long been in the logistical details rather than large-scale cataclysms.
After three seasons as a production on the Syfy network, the show’s Season 4 on Amazon Prime Video now affords “The Expanse” the chance to have the best of both worlds. Continuing the tradition of thoughtfully outlining a system-wide conflict while following through a portal to countless untold problems, “The Expanse” is an evolving text that an increased sense of scale has only made richer.
Regardless of where it made its broadcast home, the show was bound for a massive shift. Continuing to take...

In the content space race currently being fought out in the entertainment industry, shows getting picked up by one platform after being dumped by another is becoming a more frequent phenomenon.
Some moves feel more like a marriage of convenience, while others feel like a more obvious fit.
Take “The Expanse” moving to Amazon Prime Video after three seasons on Syfy, for instance. Season 4 of the high-concept space series dropped Thursday on the streamer, and most involved in the story of how “The Expanse” was rescued agree that Amazon was a better fit for the galactic caper all along.
Much has been written of the wild story of how “The Expanse” fell into Amazon’s lap. To recap, fans paid for a plane to fly over the Amazon Studios offices with a #SaveTheExpanse banner; “Game of Thrones” creator George R.R. Martin (among others) sent a message to Amazon’s CEO...

Has The Expanse's "hard science fiction" genre classification kept you from checking out the show? It shouldn't!
Like all of the best TV shows, The Expanse is both a shining example of its predominant genre and a story that breaks free of its genre boxes to become something greater. It's a drama with the political nerdiness of The West Wing, the narrative scope of Game of Thrones, and the thematic focus of Mad Men or Breaking Bad. It's one of the most diverse stories and worlds currently represented on screen, and it's telling stories about the dangers of demagoguery and tribalism that are deeply relevant to some of today's scariest world problems.
It's also a show I am constantly trying to convince people to watch—not so much the sci-fi nerds in my life, who have mostly already fallen in love with this sociopolitical space opera,...

The Expanse season 4 will explore the impact of hundreds of planets suddenly becoming accessible, according to showrunner Naren Shankar.
After a longer-than-normal absence due to its transition from Syfy to Prime Video, The Expanse season 4 will finally return on Friday, December 13, and, appropriately enough, the series will shift its entire perspective from the squabbles between Earth, Mars, and the Belt — although those certainly still exist — to the possibilities presented by the opening of the Ring gates in last season’s finale. Veteran showrunner Naren Shankar gave us his unique perspective on the story to come during a season 4 set visit last year, and he’s clearly thankful that Amazon rescued the show so that the adventures of the Rocinante could continue.
“What occurred when Syfy cancelled The Expanse was remarkable,” Shankar admitted. “It was a fan community that we had engaged with on Twitter. We would do...

The teaser trailer for Season 4 of The Expanse was just unveiled at New York Comic Con by the show’s new mothership, Amazon Prime Video, which imported the franchise after Syfy cancelled it after three seasons.
The Hugo Award-winning series will premiere as an Amazon Prime Original on December 13. That debut episode was screened for fans at New York Comic Con, where loyalists of the Syfy series embraced the relocated brand as a reprieve for the acclaimed sci-fi saga.
Season 4 synopsis: “The Expanse begins a new chapter for the series with the crew of the Rocinante on a mission from the U.N. to explore new worlds beyond the Ring Gate. Humanity has been given access to thousands of Earth-like planets, which has created a land rush and furthered tensions between the opposing nations of Earth, Mars and the Belt. We talked to the cast and creators behind The Expanse about bringing such a global story to the Amazon platform.
When The Expanse Season 4 launches on Amazon in December, the science fiction drama based on the bestselling series of books by James S.A. Corey will be available in the "same" place around the world for the first time ever as an Amazon Global Original.
Previously, The Expanse aired on Syfy in the United States, streamed on Amazon Prime domestically, and was available internationally via Netflix. When Amazon swooped in to save The Expanse after Syfy cancelled it after three seasons, that not only meant we would get more of one of the best and most vital shows on TV, it also meant that, moving forward, this story would be made available to multiple countries around the same time.

Rosa Gilmore (The Handmaid’s Tale), Tyrant alum Keon Alexander and Jess Salgueiro (Mouthpiece) are set for recurring roles on the upcoming fourth season of The Expanse, from Alcon Television Group, the sci-fi drama’s first season on Amazon following its move from Syfy.
Co-created and written by Oscar-nominated screenwriting duo Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Children of Men), The Expanse is based on the bestselling book series by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck (under the pen name James S. A. Corey). The cast includes Steven Strait, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Dominique Tipper, Cas Anvar, Wes Chatham, Frankie Adams and Thomas Jane.
Gilmore will play Lucia Mazur, one of the Belter refugees who have staked their claim to a new Earth-like planet on the other side of the Ring Gates. Trained as a medic, Lucia doesn’t hesitate to help friend and foe alike when disaster strikes. Alexander plays a wily and charismatic Belter faction leader.

It’s been eight months since Amazon rescued The Expanse, picking up a fourth season of the sci-fi series after it was canceled by Syfy.
“The show has come back strong,” Amazon Studios’ co-head of TV Vernon Sanders said during the network’s executive session at TCA. “The fans’ love has helped us build this; we can’t wait for them to see it.”
As to when that will happen, “Hopefully, we are working toward having it on before the end of the year,” he said, later reiterating that the plan for The Expanse is to return before the end of 2019.
Sanders later shared more about what to expect next season. In the Season 3 finale, the Ring gates opened, with the gang passes through it. “We will see what is on the other side,” Sanders told Deadline.
He confirmed that all series regulars are coming back. Will The Expanse be bigger and better on Amazon?...
