A riveting and radical act of empathy, with actress Deragh Campbell’s unforgettably embodied portrayal of mental instability as the eye of its storm, Canadian director Kazik Radwanski’s astonishing third feature (after “How Heavy This Hammer” and “Tower”) is a brief, bracing burst of microbudget indie filmmaking at its most powerful. “Anne at 13,000 ft” might look like mumblecore, but it plays as a psychological horror and a ticking-clock thriller that morphs into a wild, windswept tangle of incipient, but never quite arriving tragedy.
Anne (Campbell) has an unspecified anxiety disorder. It’s dormant but with her in the deceptively calm prologue as she cradles a butterfly in her hands and shows it to the kids in her charge at the daycare center where she works. It is with her when she goes on awkward Tinder dates and stutters through a sincere, raggedly emotional speech at the wedding of her best friend and co-worker Sarah.

"You feel the lift off the ground... And you feel the plane climbing into the sky..." The Cinema Guild has just unveiled an official Us trailer for the acclaimed indie film Anne at 13,000 Ft, which first premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last fall and most recently stopped by the Berlin Film Festival this year. The excellent, taut 75-minute Canadian feature stars up-and-coming actress Deragh Campbell as Anne, a volatile young woman increasingly frustrated by everyday social and professional encounters. Her life is changed when she goes skydiving for a bachelorette party. I recently saw this film at Berlinale and loved it - one of my favorites of the fest. I wrote that it's "a shot of adrenaline of cinema if you embrace the jump with her." One of the best indie discoveries out of Tiff last year. The film also stars Lawrene Denkers, Matt Johnson, and Dorothea Paas. I highly,...

Bite is a welcome, refreshing addition to the body horror sub-genre. A visual treat with solid story, this film will keep viewers entertained in more ways than one.
The film opens with young bride-to-be Casey (Elma Begovic), and friends Jill (Annette Wozniak) and Kirsten (Denise Yuen), enjoying all that Costa Rica has to offer. At the encouragement of a handsome local, the girls decide to hike to a secluded water hole with the promise of beautiful waterfalls and crystal clear pools. It’s here that Casey is “bitten” by something in the water, though she and her compatriots don’t pay it much attention at the time. After all, they’re in the jungle and whatnot.
Upon returning home, however, Casey is confronted with the pressure of her upcoming nuptuals by both her fiancé (Jordan Grey) and his disapproving mother (Lawrene Denkers). To make matters worse, her mysterious bug bite...

It may be a bit rough around the edges, but there’s a lot to enjoy about director Chad Archibald’s Bite. In a day and age when most genre fans feel like they’ve seen just about everything, his take on body horror is boldly refreshing and offers up a few unexpected twists that I genuinely appreciated. Bite also boasts some of the most impressive production design and practical special effects I’ve seen on the indie level in some time, and it is anchored by an effectively unnerving performance by up-and-coming actress Elma Begovic.
Bite follows reluctant bride-to-be Casey (Begovic) to the tropics for a bachelorette weekend with a few of her gal pals (Annette Wozniak, Denise Yuen). What’s supposed to be a relaxing, fun-filled trip ends up becoming a nightmare for Casey in more ways than one. She ends up an intoxicated mess, gets entangled with a predatory stranger,...

Chad Archibald has been making quiet a name for himself in genre cinema (and in my movie collection) over the past few years, whether it’s producing awesome action movies like Bounty Hunters, starring WWE’s Trish Stratus; or more horrific fare like Hellmouth and the fantastic Antisocial. More recently Archibald has also directed a number of horror hits, including last years Frightfest film The Drownsman and this years cause célèbre, Bite. Which has, if you believe the hype, been causing a furore at screenings around the world, with walkouts and vomiting amongst other audience afflictions…
Bite tells the story of bride-to-be Casey, while on her hen party getaway to exotic Costa Rica, gets a seemingly harmless bite from an unknown insect while bathing in an idyllic jungle pool.
