When Los Espookys was cancelled in 2022, a chorus of disappointment rang out through the industry and from fans of the beloved show. It was the kind of news that threatened a certain sense of disillusionment, but unbeknownst to its fans at the time, creator Julio Torres had a lot up his sleeve. The writer, who first became known for his work on Saturday Night Live digital shorts like “Papyrus” and “The Actress,” was already hard at work on his first feature film and a new series. Problemista hit theaters this spring, and the new series became Fantasmas, which will open Atx TV Festival on May 30 before premiering on Max June 7.
The series, which Torres wrote, directed, and stars in, follows a character of the same name as he follows the trail of a lost earring. Torres spoke to The Hollywood Reporter ahead of the premiere about navigating the industry’s...

Julio Torres is back with more wacky adventures in the new HBO comedy series Fantasmas premiering Friday, June 7 at 11 p.m. Et/Pt. New episodes of the six-episode season will debut weekly.
Fantasmas—a title very on-brand for Torres following Los Espookys—follows the character of Julio (Torres) as he goes in search of a precious oyster earring. Across his journey, he reflects on the offbeat characters he encounters in introspective, often eerie and always comedic vignettes set in a dreamy, alternate version of New York City. The series weaves together stories of people looking for meaning, purpose and connection in an increasingly isolating world.
In addition to creating, directing, executive producing and starring in the series, Torres will be joined in the cast by Martine Gutierrez as Vanesja, Tomas Matos as Chester and Joe Rumrill as the voice of Bibo. Fans can expect guest stars aplenty including Steve Buscemi,...

Julio Torres is stepping into a very literal and gender-swapped “Girl With a Pearl Earring” rendition for HBO.
The “Los Espookys” creator is back at the network with new surreal series “Fantasmas,” which he created, directed, and stars in. The series debuted at the Atx TV Festival earlier this year.
Torres plays a fictionalized version of himself as he tries to uncover a lost gold oyster earring. In his search to find the precious object, Torres’ character Julio reflects on the offbeat folks he encounters in introspective, eerie, and comedic vignettes set in a dreamy, alternate version of New York City. The surreal series is billed as a “fantastical six-part tale” that is a “kaleidoscope of color” to “weave together stories of people looking for meaning, purpose, and connection in an increasingly isolating world.”
In addition to Torres, the cast includes Martine Gutierrez, Tomas Matos, and Joe Rumrill as the voice of Bibo.

Back in 2022, world champion chess player Magnus Carlsen quit the Sinquefield Cup pro tournament in St. Louis, Missouri, after a surprising loss to a 19-year-old, Hans Niemann. What started as a speculative drama about why Carlsen quit or how Niemann won in the first place quickly spiraled into accusations of cheating, an unsuccessful legal battle, and what’s considered to be the biggest scandal in chess history. Now, that story is receiving the film treatment at A24.
Emma Stone will produce the cheating scandal film alongside Dave McCary, her husband and production partner.

Emma Stone knows to stick with what is working as she follows up her 2023 projects (which have garnered significant attention) with more from the same collaborators. Stone recently won an Academy Award for her performance in Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things. Lanthimos would also already release a trailer for his next film, Kinds of Kindness, earlier this year and Stone is among the principal cast. Other than Poor Things, last year, Stone would star in a limited series for Showtime with comedic actor Nathan Fielder in a surreal dark comedy called The Curse, which would also feature a collaboration with Benny Safdie.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Stone will also be reuniting with Fielder for another project with A24. The indie studio that features a bevy of off-beat films has recently had its biggest title with Civil War, and the company played its moves aggressively to beat out bigger studios for Checkmate.

Following the success of “The Curse,” Emma Stone, Nathan Fielder and A24 are teaming up again to take on the cutthroat world of chess.
The studio has won the rights to the hot feature package “Checkmate,” based on a book proposal by author Ben Mezrich, whose works were adapted into “The Social Network” and “Dumb Money.”
The story centers on what has been described as the “biggest scandal in the history of chess,” following the controversial 2022 head-to-head match between Grandmasters Magnus Carlsen, then world champion, and Hans Niemann, during which the latter was accused of cheating.
After a competitive situation in which multiple studios and streamers showed interest in the project, A24 nabbed the rights thanks to a reported seven-figure offer. The deals are still in the works, but Fielder is currently attached to direct, with Stone on board to produce with her husband and partner Dave McCary under their Fruit Tree banner.

A24, operating on its new mandate to act aggressively in the pursuit of projects, just outplayed the Hollywood studios and streamers in order to pick up Checkmate, a hot feature package centered on a book proposal by Ben Mezrich, the author whose books were adapted into films such The Social Network and Dumb Money.

“I Saw the TV Glow” director Jane Schoenbrun finally celebrated their second feature at the film’s New York City premiere on Wednesday, April 24, in partnership with Rooftop Films. But “I Saw the TV Glow” first premiered back in January at Sundance, under the banner of A24, and with Emma Stone and Dave McCary’s production company Fruit Tree.
“I sent it to [Fruit Tree] and a couple other people, and they were like, ‘Hey, we wanna work with you,'” Schoenbrun told IndieWire. “Then I got a call from Emma Stone who was like, ‘Thank you so much for your business,’ and I was like, ‘You’re welcome!'”
The visually striking film follows two teens who are obsessed with a disturbing young adult TV show that, once canceled, starts to bleed into reality for the characters. David Ehrlich wrote in IndieWire’s review that the film “marries the queer radicality...

With Zendaya’s new tennis movie, Challengers, dropping on Friday, fans couldn’t help but notice the Peter Parker lovers to tennis players pipeline of the three Spider-Man actresses. Zendaya’s role as a tennis player in Challengers follows Kirsten Dunst’s Lizzie Bradbury in Wimbledon and Emma Stone’s Billie Jean King in Battle of the Sexes. However, fans find that tennis is not the only thing common between them, as all three of them dated their Spider-Man co-stars.

Zendaya and Tom Holland’s relationship is still going strong despite the breakup rumors. They were spotted together at the Dune: Part Two celebration event. Their relationship has probably run longer than the other two pairs’ short-lived relationships put together.

Showtime’s satirical thriller “The Curse,” created by stars Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie and also starring Emma Stone, has exclusively shared its Emmy submission plans with Variety.
The three multi-hyphenates will have more than one chance at recognition across various categories for producing, acting, directing, writing and editing.
“The Curse” explores the tumultuous lives of a married couple (Fielder and Stone), who encounter a string of misfortunes while filming an HGTV series in New Mexico. Their challenges are compounded by a dubious “curse” and a manipulative producer (Safdie), which together threaten both the show and their relationship.
Stone, fresh off her second best actress Oscar win for her role in Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things,” is eyeing her first Emmy nod. She seeks recognition for her portrayal of Whitney, the co-host of the couple’s show about eco-friendly homes. Additionally, Stone is vying for a guest comedy actress nod for...

The Curse began with an actual curse, or at least the threat of one. When Nathan Fielder first moved from Canada to L.A. in 2009, a woman approached him on the street asking for a handout. He told her he had no money. She replied, “I curse you.”
That anecdote, described by Fielder to pal Benny Safdie, was the seed for one of the most startling and innovative shows in recent memory. Fielder, whose spins on reality TV in shows like HBO’s The Rehearsal have earned him a devoted fan base (Christopher Nolan among them), and Safdie (who, with brother and ex-directing partner Josh, made Uncut Gems) cooked up a bitter black comedy that in part skewered HGTV programming. The duo cast themselves as childhood friends — one of them, Asher Siegel (Fielder), a nebbish, budding reality star burdened with a micropenis — making a pilot about a couple trying to...

Sundance Film Festival is heading to London again this summer and the programme is full of cinematic goodies. More below.
The days are getting lighter, the sun is shining ever so slightly more now and we’ve packed away our thickest wool jumpers, although we still need some thick socks. That must mean one thing and one thing only.
Sundance Film Festival: London is almost upon us.
Some might say summer is coming too, but we’re mostly excited for Sundance London, which has just revealed their full programme for this year’s festival. The festival brings a fine selection of films which originally premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January, in Park City, Utah. The crème de la crème, so to speak.

After much anticipation, the sequel to the 2017 sketch “Papyrus 2” has finally emerged despite being cut for time during the live broadcast, making its debut on YouTube.
The original sketch was conceived by former “SNL” writer Julio Torres, who was inspired by a past tweet in which he mused, “Every day I wake up and remember that Avatar, a huge international blockbuster, used the Papyrus font for their logo, and no one stopped them.”
Directed by Dave McCary (who also shot the previously pointed Torres sketch “Wells For Boys” with his now-wife and current collaborator Emma Stone), this meditation on obsession and a questionable font became the logo for James Cameron’s massive franchise.
Gosling recalled the (alleged) decision-making process of choosing the font papyrus for the blockbuster, in the past sketch, “Like a thoughtless child just wandering by a garden, just yanking leaves along the way.” Eventually, his character would...

Emma Stone is proving two Oscars and being an Emmy hopeful isn’t a curse by any means.
The “Poor Things” Academy Award winner is already starring in Yorgos Lanthimos’ follow-up “Kinds of Kindness,” which will debut at Cannes 2024, and she’s also attached to Lanthimos’ upcoming satirical film “Save the Green Planet,” a remake of the Korean comedy of the same name. But Stone has yet another project in the works too: leading an untitled Universal feature directed by her real-life husband.
Stone is in talks to star in the movie that would be directed by Dave McCary, who is also in talks, an individual with knowledge of the project told IndieWire. The two most recently worked together as executive producers on the Showtime series “The Curse.” Stone and McCary together work under their production banner Fruit Tree.

Searchlight Pictures announced on Tuesday that its dramedy A Real Pain, marking the sophomore feature of actor-turned-filmmaker Jesse Eisenberg, will hit theaters in the thick of awards season, on October 18.
Eisenberg stars opposite Succession Emmy winner Kieran Culkin in the buzz title, which Searchlight snapped up for $10 million in the first major deal out of this year’s Sundance Film Festival, as we were first to report. In the film, also scripted by Eisenberg, the pair play David and Benji, cousins who reunite for a tour of Poland to honor their grandmother, but see older tensions resurface against the backdrop of their family’s history.
Hailing from Topic and Fruit Tree, the film also stars Jennifer Grey (Dirty Dancing), Will Sharpe (The White Lotus), Kurt Egyiawan (Beasts of No Nation), Liza Sadovy (A Small Light) and Daniel Oreskes (Only Murders in the Building). Producers on the project included Ali Herting,...

Searchlight Pictures has set an October 18, 2024, theatrical release date for A Real Pain, the heartfelt comedy written and directed by Jesse Eisenberg, who drew the film from his own personal history.

The adventure takes a turn when the pair’s old tensions resurface against the backdrop of their family history.
“We are blown away by Jesse’s vision and craft in telling this hilarious and profound film,” said Searchlight Presidents Matthew Greenfield and David Greenbaum when the film was acquired. “He tells a deeply personal story and makes it universal. A Real Pain, the new film starring Jesse Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin, has unveiled a new first-look image as well as announced its release date. In the Sundance review from our own Chris Bumbray, he glows about the film, saying, “A Real Pain is Jesse Eisenberg’s second film as a director and marks a substantial leap in quality since his pleasant – but minor – first effort, When You Finish Saving the World. With a tight running time, evocative location shooting, and two terrific performances at its heart, it’s no wonder this scored one of Sundance’s biggest deals, with Searchlight shelling out a cool $10 million for it.”
The plot synopsis reads,
“Mismatched cousins David (Jesse Eisenberg) and Benji (Kieran Culkin) reunite for a tour through Poland to honor their beloved grandmother. The adventure takes a turn when the odd-couple’s old tensions resurface against the backdrop of their family history.

There’s no doubt an element of wish-fulfillment at play when you’re a debut queer filmmaker casting Tilda Swinton as the lead of your movie.
That’s the case for the 37-year-old Julio Torres, a seasoned comedian onstage and former writer of “Saturday Night Live” (2016 through 2021) and co-creator of HBO’s short-lived cult series “Los Espookys.” His new A24 comedy “Problemista,” now in select theaters before opening wide on March 22, has already grossed more than $690,000 in just a handful of theaters. He stars in the endearing comedy as Alejandro, a fledgling toy designer hustling in New York in the last few days before his visa expires and he’s sent back to Central America. Alejandro accepts an assistant job under Elizabeth (Tilda Swinton), a whirling dervish and New York art scene castaway with faded magenta hair and a short fuse who tasks him with organizing a posthumous show for her dead artist husband,...

“This is the night! We did it!” people said to each other as they arrived at the Oscars last night.
There are two sides of the red carpet: The one everyone sees at home with megawatt stars, and the one behind them where other ticket holders walk up a massive staircase, also draped in scarlet, where staff members politely and sternly moved everyone along as people lingered to take selfies.

The awards season created a unique bond among Best Actress nominees Emma Stone and Lily Gladstone, but Stone’s win over Gladstone did not sit well with many fans. Stone won her second Oscar for her role as Bella Baxter in Poor Things. Lily Gladstone, who played the Osage woman, Molly Burkhart, in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon was expected by many to win the Oscar.

Lily Gladstone’s Oscar snub is also a loss to the Native American community, as she would have been the first Native woman to win the award. However, the competition was tight between Stone and Gladstone as they both won several other awards, beating each other, throughout this awards season.

The Academy Awards telecast had its fair share of memorable highlights, like John Cena’s naked presentation of the costumes category, or Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt’s faux “Barbenheimer” feud while presenting a special tribute to stunt professionals.
But there was plenty that the audience at home didn’t see, from the pre-show pandemonium caused by late arrivals to the sweetest interactions at the Governor’s Ball after party.
See the full list of Oscar winners here.
Late Start
Viewers at home may not have noticed when the broadcast began, but the room was filled with chaos in the moments before the program, causing a five-minute delay to the show’s start. The ceremony was slated to begin earlier than usual this year, bumped up an hour to 4 p.m. Pt. Couple that with hundreds of pro-Palestine protesters shutting down a major section of Hollywood and many A-listers arrived with just seconds to spare.

The 2024 Oscars were one to remember, bringing the audience to tears at some moments and laughter at others. From Ryan Gosling reuniting with the Kens from Barbie to John Cena going nearly nude onstage and Al Pacino skipping announcing the best picture nominees, here are some of Sunday night’s most memorable moments.
Ryan Gosling Reunited With Other Kens for Barbie Performance
Ryan Gosling and Mark Ronson took the stage to perform their Barbie hit “I’m Just Ken.” Gosling kicked off the performance from his seat in the audience behind co-star Margot Robbie, decked out in a hot pink, bedazzled custom Gucci suit, matching leather gloves and Gucci sunglasses. Gosling was joined by Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Ncuti Gatwa and more of the Kens from the Barbie film, who took the stage alongside their onscreen leader, donning suits with tails and top hats. Slash also made a special appearance during the performance.

Emma Stone told fellow best actress nominee Lily Gladstone she was “in awe” of her while accepting the award for best actress at the 2024 Oscars on Sunday night.
Stone acknowledged all of her fellow nominees but took an extra moment to address Gladstone, whom many pundits had expected to win the award after collecting several previous honors for her performance in Killers of the Flower Moon. “I share this with you,” she said to Gladstone. “I am in awe of you. And it’s been such an honor to do all this together; I hope we get to do more together.”
Stone won the award for her performance as Bella Baxter in Poor Things, a film for which she also served as producer. Her second collaboration with director Yorgos Lanthimos, the movie is screenwriter Tony McNamara’s adaptation of the 1992 Frankenstein-inspired novel of the same name by Alasdair Gray.

Many 2024 Oscar viewers found themselves captivated by speculation about what Emma Stone said to her husband after Jimmy Kimmel joked about the nudity in Poor Things during the awards show on Sunday.
Following a montage dedicated to the 11-time nominated film, Oscars host Kimmel quipped to the crowd that, “Those were all the parts of Poor Things that we’re allowed to show on TV.”
The joke was ostensibly a reference to the level of sex and nudity in the Stone-led film, and many online felt that her reaction implied she was displeased with Kimmel’s comments. Some speculated she had turned to her husband next to her, Dave McCary, and said, “Oh my God.” Others believed she was saying, “What a prick.”
Representatives for Stone did not immediately respond to requests for clarification on her reaction.

Oscar week is finally here! Ask anyone who has been in the thick of awards season and they’ll likely let out a huge sigh followed by exasperated admission that this has been one of the most hectic runs in recent memory. The condensed calendar, forced by last year’s dual strikes, could translate to more lively bashes, however, as there’s light at the end of the tunnel with Sunday’s Oscars. That can only mean that champagne is currently popping at A-list bashes across Los Angeles, and The Hollywood Reporter is on the scene everywhere from Vanity Fair and Elton John to MPTF’s Night Before. See below for the roundup of all the red carpet action.

After premiering at SXSW in March 2023 (where we gave the film a glowing review), Julio Torres’s feature debut, Problemista, is finally coming out in theaters after delays due to the WGA and SAG strikes.
Written, directed by, and starring the former SNL writer and Los Espookys creator, the A24 comedy follows an immigrant struggling to get by in New York City with dreams of becoming a toymaker as he takes a job as an assistant to an eccentric widow of an artist (played incredibly by Tilda Swinton).

Nearly a year since it premiered at SXSW, Julio Torres’ “Problemista” finally had its New York City premiere at the Village East by Angelika on Tuesday, February 27. His A24 satire stars Tilda Swinton, Isabella Rossellini, James Scully, Greta Lee, and RZA, to name a few. On the red carpet, producer Emma Stone, alongside fellow producers Dave McCary and Ali Herting, even made a surprise appearance.
“She was very happy to do it,” Julio Torres said of getting Tilda Swinton involved as his co-lead. “She was a little worried about playing an American, then we talked and she didn’t have to be American. She found this creature, we don’t know where she came from. Like a dragon, she emerged from a cave.”
Tilda Swinton was visibly very excited to be in Manhattan in support of this project. “Julio sent me [the script] and asked me to come play with him,” the Oscar winner said.

A24 and We’re All Going to the World’s Fair director Jane Schoenbrun have teamed up for a new horror movie called I Saw the TV Glow, which JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray had the chance to see at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year (you can read his 5/10 review at This Link). Yesterday, A24 took to social media to unveil a poster for the film, and to promise that a trailer would be online today. True to their word, they have already dropped the trailer online, and you can check it out in the embed above! I Saw the TV Glow is scheduled to reach theatres on May 3rd.
Written and directed by Schoenbrun, I Saw the TV Glow tells the story of two teenage outcasts who bond over their shared love of a scary television show. However, the boundary between TV and reality begins to blur after it is mysteriously canceled.

What happens when the line between reality and TV becomes a little too blurred?
For two outcast teens played by Justice Smith and Brigette Lundy-Paine in “I Saw the TV Glow,” a cult favorite horror series comes to life with haunting consequences. Writer/director Jane Schoenbrun’s A24 feature was one of IndieWire’s must-see films at Sundance 2024 and landed a coveted “A” rating from IndieWire critic David Ehrlich.
The film, which homages everything from the eerie vibes of David Lynch’s “Twin Peaks: The Return” to late-night Nickelodeon ’90s television, follows teens who “bond over their shared love of a scary television show, but the boundary between TV and reality begins to blur after it is mysteriously canceled,” per the official synopsis.
Helena Howard, Lindsey Jordan, Phoebe Bridgers, Fred Durst, Danielle Deadwyler, and Sloppy Jane round out the cast.
