Debbie Gibson Shares 30 Fun Facts About Herself to Celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Out of the Blue
Thirty years ago, an unknown 16-year-old Long Island girl named Debbie Gibson released her first pop album.
Entitled Out of the Blue, it spawned five hit singles and sold five million copies worldwide. The chart topping “Foolish Beat” made her the youngest female artist to write, produce and perform a top single – a record that endures today.
Gibson is still around. Her follow-up album, Electric Youth, went straight to no. 1. She continues to release new music and she occasionally acts—most recently in the 2016 TV Movie Summer of Dreams. She is releasing a box set of her music later this...

Music has always played an integral part in setting the mood for Nicolas Winding Refn’s films, so the director’s recent announcement that he would be compiling a collection of songs that inspired his 2016 fashion industry horror flick “The Neon Demon” only made sense.

The vinyl album, titled “The Wicked Die Young,” will feature tracks from Dionne Warwick, Giorgio Moroder, Suicide, and the film’s composer Cliff Martinez, as well as Refn’s nephew, Julian Winding, who also contributed to “The Neon Demon.”
Winding’s “When You Want To Hurt Someone” fits perfectly with the electric, bumping mood of the film.

Nicolas Winding Refn’s glamorous and gruesome The Neon Demon was one of 2016’s more divisive releases. But its fans can have more to chew on when Refn debuts The Wicked Die Young, an album comprised of music that inspired him when undertaking the project. According to Pitchfork, the compilation will be available for purchase on vinyl April 14, with cover art of an eyeball peeking out from two parted lips—an image that may test your gag reflex if you’re familiar with the movie’s plot.
For the records, Refn selected songs from 999, Giorgio Moroder, and Sparks, while also nodding to the cinematic works that influenced him with the likes of Dionne Warwick’s “(Theme From) Valley Of The Dolls” and Pino Donaggio’s “The Shower (Theme From Dressed To Kill).” On Facebook, Electric Youth wrote that its entry, “Good Blood,” was written specifically for The ...

With The Neon Demon now (almost completely) exorcised from Danish auteur Nicolas Winding Refn‘s system, he is already deep into preparing his next project. On the docket for the director is The Avenging Silence, which will apparently sate Refn’s desire to make a “big extravagant action film.” Refn also said over the summer it is loosely inspired by “Dr. No,” Ian Fleming‘s classic Bond novel, as well as William Burrough‘s “Nova Express.” An extended synopsis has now been released for the feature, which hopefully will make its way to screens by 2018.
While he has dipped into action in sections of Drive, Bronson and The Pusher Trilogy, The Avenging Silence sounds like a big step for Refn into pure spy/action genre fare. However, fans of Refn’s stylistic choices should rest assured as he has already stated his protagonist won’t say much. This time, that...

You only have to look at Zane Lowe's re-scoring of Drive to see how impassioned fans get about film soundtracks. In fairness, that was a brave undertaking, and swapping College & Electric Youth's sublime 'A Real Hero' for The 1975 in that aqueduct scene aside, it wasn't a total disaster. But the DJ's reimagining of the ineffably stylish thriller was still met with widespread scorn.
Admittedly, it was a strange choice of project (why mess with perfection?), although it's perhaps stranger still that altering the soundtrack from a film just three years old could be branded an act of sacrilege and defacement. But it's proof if proof were needed that scores worth their salt can quickly wedge themselves into the Zeitgeist and become as revered as the films themselves.
So will the same be said of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 in a few years' time? Lorde only knows…...

A rescoring of Drive has caused online outrage, but Mark's keeping an open mind about musical reinterpretations
Movie music matters. It's tough to wax lyrical about why it matters without sounding like one of those autocue scripts that we'll be hearing all throughout the coming awards season, probably read out by unlikely pairs of presenters, (“Now, to present the award for Best Sound Editing, Justin Bieber and Angela Lansbury!”) so let's just say that it does.
Whether it's an original score from Hans Zimmer or a jukebox tour of Quentin Tarantino's record collection, a movie's soundtrack informs the tone and timbre of the movie itself. So when we get into the question of movie rescores, we're really getting back into that thorny issue of asking whether the director's original intentions are sacrosanct to any subsequent versions of a film. As some of you may already have guessed, we bring...

Of all the great movies the Oscars have shunned over the years, Drive's snub in 2012 was a tough one to take.
Ryan Gosling stars as the Hollywood stuntman who moonlights as a getaway driver in his most mesmerising performance since he was a Jewish neo-Nazi in 2001's The Believer. Carey Mulligan is the struggling single mum who Gosling falls for, and a between-Breaking Bad seasons Bryan Cranston plays his mechanic partner in crime.
Nicolas Winding Refn's direction is suave and daring; he follows the blood, sweat and tears of The Driver's journey with total badassness and ends up with something in between Taxi Driver and Michael Mann's Thief... And then there's the soundtrack. What a soundtrack.

Zane Lowe has defended his forthcoming BBC Radio 1 Drive soundtrack project.
The DJ has curated a new soundtrack for Ryan Gosling and Nicolas Winding Refn's cult hit, bringing in Chvrches, The 1975, Baauer, Banks, Bastille, Bring Me the Horizon, Eric Prydz, Jon Hopkins, Laura Mvula, The Neighbourhood and Zcc (Simon Neil) to create new music.
The re-scored film will be shown on BBC Three on October 30 at 10pm.
Despite backing from director Refn and the makers of the 2011 film, fans have taken to social media to voice their objection to replacing the likes of Kavinsky, College, Electric Youth and Chromatics from the original soundtrack.
"I've read some messages from people who are either confused or angry about #R1Drive. Its important to say no-one is trying to improve here," Lowe wrote on his Twitter page, adding that "the experiment comes from a place of respect".

One of the most acclaimed elements of Nicolas Winding Refn's "Drive" was the score - a blend of original electronic numbers by composer Cliff Martinez along with a couple of key pop songs such as College & Electric Youth's "A Real Hero," The Chromatics' "Tick of the Clock" and Kavinsky and Lovefoxxx's "Nightcall".
For a film with minimal dialogue, the score played a very important part in generating that film's sense of tone. Now, in an intersting experiment, Radio 1 and BBC Three have announced plans to rescore the entire film for a one-time only broadcast in the UK next week.
Zane Lowe is curating the project which is being dubbed "Radio 1 Rescores: Drive," which suggests there may be more re-score broadcasts of this type on the way.

Chicago – Debbie Gibson was the youngest recording artist – at 17 years old – to write, produce and perform a number one hit (“Foolish Beat” in 1988), and her songs were the soundtrack to that era’s teen generation. HollywoodChicago.com caught up with the candid Ms. Gibson at the “Hollywood Show” Chicago.
Deborah Ann “Debbie” Gibson was born in Brooklyn, New York, one of four musical siblings. At age eight, she sang in the children’s chorus at the Metropolitan Opera House in New Your City, and took piano lessons. By the time she was in her early teens in the early 1980s, she had a handful of demo songs that caught the interest of Atlantic Records. In the meantime she started playing club dates, all while attending high school. Atlantic Records released her first album in 1986, “Out of the Blue,” and the single “Only in My Dreams” reached number four on the...

Bisexual Swedish singer Sally Shapiro just released her new video for her single “Starman” featuring Electric Youth and it's anything but typical.
The glittery clip features a tutu-clad protagonist, two spit-swapping Ken dolls and a spoken word rallying cry against normalcy.
Of the decidedly unconventional video Shapiro says in a press release:
"A starman, in this song, is someone who interests you despite, or maybe because of, being different than the people you usually surround yourself with. Given that a few of our other music videos have depicted boy-girl-love, we wanted the music video to illustrate something less heteronormative. We had already asked the German director Edwin Brienen to direct the music video when we told him that. It turned out that he was gay himself so he was enthusiastic to come up with the music video concept that we went for."

Listen, we know that songs are never just used once, and popular tunes can be utilized across any number of films. And if we're going to get technical about this whole thing, Kavinsky & Lovefoxx's "Nightcall" actually featured on "The Lincoln Lawyer" soundtrack before it became massive with "Drive" (though music supervisor Eric Craig worked on both films). But it's undeniable that Nicolas Winding Refn's film was one of the big soundtrack stories of 2011, spawning a "Drive" tour with the bands this spring, and a vinyl reissue of the album this summer, so this move by whoever is working on "Taken 2" feels a bit lazy. As Bryan Mills works his way across Istanbul kicking ass, you will be hearing at some point "A Real Hero" by College & Electric Youth and "Tick Of The Clock" by Chromatics, two of the centerpiece songs from "Drive." Considering that "Taken 2" only has a.
