- Served as Alaska's lone representative in the U.S. House of Representatives from March 6, 1973 to his death on March 18, 2022.
- Was the 45th Dean of the House, the title bestowed on the longest serving member of the U.S. House of Representatives.
- Lost consciousness while a flight from Los Angeles to Seattle was in mid flight. He was pronounced dead in Seattle after the flight landed.
- At the time of his death, Young was the longest then serving member of Congress, with continuous service of 49 years.

- Won his seat in the U.S. House of Representatives by special election in 1973, after the disappearance/death of Representative Nick Begich.
- Former chair of the Chair of the House Transportation Committee. In office January 3, 2001 - January 3, 2007.
- Both Young, and his immediate predecessor as US Representative from Alaska, Nick Begich, died while on board an airplane, Young on March 18, 2022, and Begich on October 16, 1972, almost 50 years apart.
