Idris Elba is teasing his potential return as the DC Comics assassin Bloodshot.
“I would definitely like to tell the Superman story. There’s no doubt,” Elba tells Variety. “Bloodsport versus Superman. It needs to happen.”
The actor was referencing how Bloodsport was sent to prison for putting Superman in the ICU with a kryptonite bullet, a key element of his character’s backstory that’s alluded to in “The Suicide Squad.”
Bloodsport was one of the few remaining members of Task Force X that survived the battle against Starro in “The Suicide Squad.” While the film ended with Bloodsport blackmailing Amanda Waller into setting his team free, the assassin’s current whereabouts in the DC cinematic universe remains to be seen.
Variety caught up with Elba at the New York premiere of his new movie “Beast,” which sees the actor face off against a deadly lion.

Initially, people thought that Will Smith’s absence from the most recent Suicide Squad movie was kind of odd, and many even thought that Idris Elba had been brought in to replace Smith and take over the character. That idea was debunked rather quickly since he did come as Bloodsport, another DC villain that was valuable thanks to his skill set and the fact that he could interact in a positive manner with a team. But as of now, with the aftermath of the Oscars still on everyone’s mind, and the fact that despite the different feelings held by many fans,

One of the best rivalries in the DC Cinematic Universe is between Bloodsport and Peacemaker from The Suicide Squad. From the very moment Amanda Waller introduced them, they instantly disliked each other. Both of these guys could do the same thing, except both men were adamant that each of them could do it better. And during the beginning of their first mission together, they had a little contest. Basically, it’s the kind of thing you would expect to see in a James Gunn movie. Both of these elite killers competed for who would get the most kills and on top

James Gunn has become one of the biggest names in superhero filmmaking thanks to “The Suicide Squad” and the “Guardians of the Galaxy” movies. Now, the director is turning his eyes to streaming television via “Peacemaker,” HBO Max’s upcoming John Cena-led TV series. The show debuts in January on HBO Max.
Cena first portrayed the character, a nationalist killer who loves peace so much that he “doesn’t care how many men, women, and children he has to kill to get it,” in Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad,” which premiered in August. In the film, Peacemaker, real name Christopher Smith, joined the Suicide Squad and was badly injured in a fight with Bloodsport (Idris Elba); the film’s post-credits sequence revealed that Peacemaker was saved and extracted to the United States.

At first glance, it's hard to classify Robert DuBois as a success, even by the charitable standards of fictional supervillains, who by their very nature are fated to lose and fail. His codename, Bloodsport, is bland, and his uniform of a red bandana, black tank top, and camouflage pants does little to distinguish him from the countless other quasi-military combatants who were fashionable in superhero comics from the late '80s to the early '90s. In addition, his initial outing remained his sole appearance for eight years, until he returned to get killed off.

Last month, Christopher Smith officially made his live-action debut in The Suicide Squad, which was played by John Cena. Despite appearing to die at the hands of Bloodshot, the end credits scene revealed that Peacemaker was still alive. According to James Gunn himself, we’ll finally get to understand the titular character throughout the eight-part series on HBO Max: “Well, through the story, you learn where Peacemaker came from,” Gunn told Variety. “There’s a moment in where Bloodsport talks about his father and what his father was like, and you cut to a shot of Peacemaker,

James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad” features an expansive cast that includes Idris Elba, Margot Robbie and Viola Davis, but it’s John Cena’s Peacemaker that will get his very own HBO Max spinoff TV series.
On Wednesday, Gunn explained why he was drawn to Cena’s douchey macho-man character.
“I was not planning to do it at all,” Gunn said Wednesday during the show’s panel at the Television Critics Association press tour. “It was Peter Safran who came to me and Walter Hamada from DC, and they were like, hey, if you could do a TV show on any one of the characters from the ‘Suicide Squad,’ who would you do? “The Suicide Squad” is full of action, adventure, violence and quips — but the set was full of laughs, according to a new gag reel released by Warner Bros. Entertainment Friday.
The DC-comics based film has been out since July, but there’s still plenty of unseen footage of Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Idris Elba (Bloodsport), John Cena (Peacemaker) Viola Davis (Amanda Waller), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang) and the whole cast for fans to enjoy. In the new gag reel, the actors who portray the mismatched, sarcastic villains in James Gunn’s sequel to 2016’s “Suicide Squad” look like they’re having a whole lot of fun.
Yea, some of their interactions are a little Nsfw, but there are also lighthearted moments featuring Robbie’s banter with Flula Borg’s Javelin or her crazy experience with a bunch of birds. And then there’s Elba tumble and, well, just the whole...

Assuming that you’ve seen James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad“, which apparently has nothing to do with “Suicide Squad”.. but also does at the same time, you’ve noticed that instead of hit assassin Deadshot we got.. hit assassin Bloodsport. There are more than just differences between the two mercenaries that makes these two different characters from their comic origins and beyond. While the characters were clearly entirely different from each other, they are very easily comparable to each other, so much so that DC replaced Will Smith’s Deadshot from the original installment with Idris Elba’s Bloodsport. Immediate differences between the two

They may have similar abilities, but there’s definitely a difference between the DC characters Deadshot and Bloodsport. And on Monday, the Twitter account for Warner Bros. UK mixed up the two.
Idris Elba, the actor who brought Bloodsport to life in James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad” turned 49 years old on Monday, prompting a slew of online birthday wishes. But, in their well wishes to the actor, the Warner Brothers UK Twitter account — Warner Brothers owns DC and its characters — mistakenly identified him as Deadshot, the character originally played by Will Smith in David Ayer’s “Suicide Squad.”
“Some may know him as Stringer Bell, others as Deadshot… Happy Birthday @idriselba!” the tweet originally read. The tweet was later corrected, but plenty of fans nabbed a screenshot of the original, and the jokes flowed freely.
“The ones who know him as Deadshot might have a problem,” Zaki Hasan tweeted.

With the arrival of “The Suicide Squad,” comic fans got to see an iconic villain brought to life on screen for the first time with Starro the Conqueror. But according to the film’s director, James Gunn, there was a version where the squad was going to take on the Man of Steel.
During an appearance on the podcast “Script Apart,” Gunn admitted that in his early visions of “The Suicide Squad,” he thought about making Superman the antagonist of the film. But then he remembered how Starro had terrified him as a child.
“He’s a character I love from the comics. I think he’s a perfect comic book character because he’s absolutely ludicrous but he’s also very scary in his own way,” Gunn said. “What he does is scary. He used to scare the crap out of me when I was a child, putting those...

“The Suicide Squad” star Idris Elba has joined the cast of Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 2,” voicing Sonic’s friend and rival Knuckles the Echidna.
Elba announced the casting on Twitter with a picture of Knuckles’ spiked fist. Introduced in the video game “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” in 1994, Knuckles was originally a rival of Sonic who is tricked by Dr. Eggman into thinking that the blue hedgehog is trying to steal the Master Emerald, a powerful gem that allows Knuckles’ island to float in the clouds. After realizing what Eggman has done, Knuckles teams up with Sonic to defeat the evil doctor, and since has become a mainstay and occasionally a playable character in the Sega video game series.

As expected, there was a whole lot of death in James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad.” And though it was hard for fans, the squad members themselves were largely unphased by most of them, save for Rick Flag’s. But there was one other death that really hit home for both fans and Polka Dot Man in particular — Milton.
But let’s be honest: Polka Dot Man’s reaction was just…logical. It was how any normal human — so not Bloodpsort, and definitely not Harley Quinn — would react to seeing someone they’ve come to know get killed. Poor Milton was loyal from the moment he started chauffeuring the squad around Corto Maltese, and in the end, he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The Dceu is alive and well and dividing its time between Corto Maltese and Belle Reve prison. James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad gives us the most DC characters in live action in any one movie ever assembled!
Ok, fine, the vast majority of them die. And a fair portion of them most folks have never even heard of. But it still counts!
And yes, there are DC Comics Easter eggs in the movie, but perhaps not as many as you might expect. So we’ve decided to split the difference. We’re gonna give you the lowdown on all the characters, especially the obscure ones, and talk about what their existence in this movie means (or could mean) for the wider Dceu. And we’ll still give you all the DC Easter eggs we were able to spot.

“The Suicide Squad,” DC’s R-rated superhero movie from “Guardians of the Galaxy” director James Gunn, made $4.1 million in its preview screenings at the box office Thursday night.
Warner Bros. says on Friday the impressive start for “The Suicide Squad” is the highest preview total seen by an R-rated movie so far during the pandemic era. And the total puts it on pace with pre-pandemic release “Birds of Prey,” which also made $4 million in February of 2020 and went on to gross $33 million in its opening weekend.
Warner Bros. is projecting a $30 million opening weekend for “The Suicide Squad,” but analysts say it could be in the low $30 million range or even as high as $40 million.

Arriving today in theaters and on HBO Max is James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, a follow-up to 2016’s Suicide Squad and also a reboot of the DC property for Warner Bros. Pictures.
If that sounds a little confusing, well, it is. The 2016 origin movie, directed by David Ayer (and subsequently recut by the studio), was a massive box office hit with $747 million worldwide in its coffers when all was said and done.

If that sounds a little confusing, well, it is. The 2016 origin movie, directed by David Ayer (and subsequently recut by the studio), was a massive box office hit with $747 million worldwide in its coffers when all was said and done.

As we enter the final weeks of Summer, the multiplex presents a new entry in the film adaptations of the (as they used to say in their comic books) “Distinguished Competition” to Marvel. Yes, the MCU made its return to the cinemas several weeks ago with Black Widow, which continues on the smaller screens (and its behind-the-scenes” conflicts are played out in the entertainment news venues), so it was only a matter of time before Warners shot back with a film based on its DC properties. And yes, it’s a sequel, with several characters from the 2016 original coming back, but it’s also kind-of-a-reboot since one of the Marvel “guiding lights” has “jumped the fence” to serve up a new take on the “high-concept” “revolving door” comic series. Perhaps that’s why the title sports a “proper article’ rather than a number two (or II). So. let’s strap...

Warning: this post contains spoilers for “The Suicide Squad”
There have been a number of actors who have popped up in movies based on both Marvel and DC Comics properties, and “The Suicide Squad” has a couple of its own to add to the list: David Dastmalchian, who was also in “Ant-Man and The Wasp,” as well as a surprise cameo appearance by someone director James Gunn brought over from his “Guardians of the Galaxy” movies.
Director James Gunn made an appearance on the latest episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, where he said he was “astounded” that the cameo hadn’t been revealed in the hundreds of reviews that have been published so far.
“Well, I mean people know I almost cast Dave [Bautista] in a role and he couldn’t do it, so he didn’t,” Gunn said. “Other than that, well, there might be a Guardian somewhere...

This article contains major The Suicide Squad spoilers. But you could tell that from the headline. We have a spoiler-free review here.
Well done! You’ve survived The Suicide Squad!
James Gunn’s stunning supervillain flick is a brutal ride through DC’s most deep cut characters and now you want to dig deep into what happened. So we’re here to break down that shocking ending, where we leave our heroes, and what’s next for the Suicide Squad in the Dceu. Well, those of them who survived, at least…
The standalone (sort of sequel) movie centers around the Suicide Squad on a top secret mission. So off they go to Corto Maltese.
We begin with two crews but only one actually survives the opening bloodbath. Those lucky few are led by Bloodsport (Idris Elba) and the crew consists of Ratcatcher 2 (Daniela Melchior), Polka-Dot Man (David Dastmalchian), Nanaue/King...

This review of “The Suicide Squad” was first published on July 28, 2021.
In the slender book entitled “Sequels That Improve Upon the Original,” in the chapter marked “Because They Hired Someone Who Better Understood the Tone,” you’ll find “The Suicide Squad,” a follow-up to 2016’s “Suicide Squad” that doubles down on what the first movie got right while learning from its predecessor’s mistakes.
I noted, in my review of “Suicide Squad,” that the film wanted desperately to follow in the footsteps of “Guardians of the Galaxy” as a film in which a group of thrown-together mismatched misfits overcome their mutual loathing and learn how to defeat a common enemy. As such, the fact that this follow-up was written and directed by “Guardians” filmmaker James Gunn represents a step in the right direction. (Industry gossip in 2016 blamed the studio for watering down original director David Ayer’s darker vision after...

August is here, and with its first weekend comes just one new wide releaseThe Suicide Squad, the follow-up to Suicide Squad, which had the biggest August opening ever ($133.7 million) in 2016 in the same frame. A lot has changed since then, and that opening is bigger than any single weekend’s combined box office total this year. While the box office does not seem to have taken a hit due to concerns over rising Covid cases in recent weeks, recovery has still been slow, and expectations are muted for the latest film in the DC Extended Universe.

Even The Losers get lucky sometimes. Before the Dceu was formed to compete against the ever-expanding, cash cow that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the approach at Warner Bros. was far looser. With the booming business of comic book adaptations in full swing, the studio was throwing money at several eclectic comic book titles like Watchmen and Jonah Hex, trying to stay competitive and seemingly more adult than their rivals. Hence before leaving to create his own superhero project, Hancock, writer-director Peter Berg started penning an adaptation of DC/Vertigo’s The Losers, bringing in French director Sylvain White to helm the picture.
Produced by Joel Silver, The Losers centered on a team of elite, black-ops Special Forces operatives betrayed by their handler. Director White connected with the material immediately.
“What appealed to me about The Losers was that it wasn’t the typical superhero-with-superpowers thing,” White told MTV. “It...

“The Suicide Squad” will storm the domestic box office, with the Warner Bros. R-rated superhero adventure on track to generate more than $30 million in its opening weekend.
As the only new movie to debut nationwide, “The Suicide Squad” won’t have much competition to top the charts in North America. Like the entire Warner Bros. 2021 film slate, “The Suicide Squad” is premiering simultaneously on HBO Max.
Some box office experts suggest that inaugural ticket sales above $30 million is a modest estimate and predict that revenues could surpass $40 million in its first three days of release. That isn’t a bad start for pandemic times, but it’s a soft debut for a film with a $185 million production budget. However, the studio’s parent company WarnerMedia isn’t just relying on box office ticket sales. It’s also hoping “The Suicide Squad” will drive subscribers to HBO Max. The company hasn...

Taking a break from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, director James Gunn steps away, albeit briefly, from the “Guardians of the Galaxy” franchise (he directed both the original 2014 film and its 2017 sequel) to dip his toes into the DC Universe and with a new interpretation of The Suicide Squad.
Reprising her role of Amanda Waller from the original film version of Suicide Squad (2016), Viola Davis sets the film in motion when she assembles a team of the worst villains she can find and then heavily arming them and sending them on a search-and-destroy mission to the island of Corto Maltese to take out the latest diabolical threat to the global community. To do so, Waller enlists Colonel Rick Flagg (Joel Kinnaman) to lead the unit (which is called the “Suicide Squad” due to the tiny explosives placed in the various soldiers’ necks to be detonated should they try to escape or...

Two blockbuster openers on the same weekend.
Two blockbuster titles are vying for supremacy at cinemas in the UK and Ireland this weekend, as The Suicide Squad opens for Warner Bros against Jungle Cruise for Disney.
Opening in 643 sites, The Suicide Squad is the 10th film in the DC Extended Universe of films based on DC Comics characters. It is a standalone sequel to 2016’s Suicide Squad, with a separate narrative but some of the same characters.
David Ayer, director of the first title, was set to return before switching to development on a film about the Gotham City Sirens.

Suicide Squad director David Ayer has taken to Twitter to give his perspective on the 2016 Warner Bros. feature, responding at the same time to those who continue to criticize it.
In a three-page letter posted to his account Thursday, titled “My Turn,” Ayer disavowed the studio’s cut of the film as well as a “10 week director’s cut,” saying that he can’t take credit for either.
“The studio cut is not my movie. Read that again,” he wrote. “And my cut is not the 10 week director’s cut – It’s a fully mature edit by Lee Smith standing on the incredibly [sic] work by John Gilroy. It’s all Steven Price’s brilliant score, with not a single radio song in the whole thing. It has traditional character arcs, amazing performances, a solid 3rd Act resolution.”

James Gunn’s part reimaging, part sequel to David Ayer’s 2016 offering – a film that left a sour taste in many mouths – is just as bonkers as you would expect from the Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker. Having extracted who and what worked from the first, Gunn puts his own gruesomely imaginative stamp on this story of ragtag supervillains that could be construed as simply being misunderstood…
Gunn takes the criminals of Task Force X, so thoughtfully and almost reluctantly put together by Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller, on an outrageously visceral, R-rated wild ride that blends balls-to-the-wall action, blood-spattering violence and life-or-death scenarios starting from the very outset. In fact, Waller covers her back and not only sends in one team but two to take on the enemy on the remote island of Corto Maltese. That explains why this cast seems to be made up of name after name, but...

If I’m being perfectly honest, because of James Gunn’s involvement alone, I already knew I was going to enjoy The Suicide Squad. Sure, some might assume that would be due to Gunn’s ongoing involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and that’s probably true to a degree. But for me, it was more based on how much I adore his oft-overlooked superhero movie Super that came out in 2011 and how it effortlessly stole my comics-loving heart with its ragtag story about a very non-heroic guy becoming the hero in unexpected ways. Because for me, the things that I love about many of the Suicide Squad characters and their dynamics within the DC universe in general feel very connected to what Gunn was doing nearly a decade ago with Super. So, it was awesome to see some of the themes he explored back then fully realized in The Suicide Squad...

It feels like we’ve been here before. A C-list DC Comics villain has been brought to life by a major Hollywood talent—Idris Elba as Bloodsport in this case—only to be saddled in a seemingly generic scene with the character’s adolescent daughter. When we saw a variation of this cliché in the first Suicide Squad movie, it stood in for barebones character development; a familiar story beat which allowed Will Smith’s Deadshot to prove he really just wants to make his little girl proud. But that was then, and this is now. This is James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.
Hence when Elba’s incarcerated baddie takes a look at his daughter through prison plexiglass, and she reveals that she too has gotten pinched and is now awaiting a court date for nicking a smartwatch, he has only one question: Why did she get caught for swiping something so stupid?...

One of the most wildly anticipated films of the summer hits theaters and on HBO Max on August 6, director James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.
Gunn, along with actors Margot Robbie and John Cena, joined Jimmy Kimmel’s guest host Anthony Anderson about their new movie and Cena “stealing” his costume. Gunn also talked about working with Sylvester Stallone, why he put “Ratcatcher” in the movie, the craziest stunts that he had Robbie and Cena do on set, Anderson’s former co-worker Steve Agee playing the Shark in a motion capture suit for the film, and the upcoming Peacemaker show on HBO Max.
Gunn says of his latest film, “I wanted to do the ultimate all-time comic book movie!”

Back in 2016, David Ayer presented to the world his vision of the DC supervillain story of The Suicide Squad; unfortunately, that film didn’t go down to well with critics or audiences. Fast forward to 2021, having brought the Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker, James Gunn on board for a reboot, this ragtag of villains gets an ultra-violent and pretty gruesome make-over.
In Gunn’s vision, which sees Margot Robbie returning as Harley Gunn, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang and the ever-brilliant Viola Davis as agent Amanda Waller, we are introduced to a whole new array of villains with big hearts and let’s just say at least one is “packing”. The list of names goes on and on but with Idris Elba as Bloodsport, John Cena as Peacemaker and Sylvester Stallone as King Shark, this new injection of blood and humour is all set to be riotously bonkers.

In November 2019, I found myself in the middle of a war zone. Well, the closest approximation of a war zone I’ve ever found myself in during my time visiting the sets of blockbuster movies. If I had been brought to this particular set in Atlanta on a sunny autumn afternoon without knowing what movie it was that I was supposed to be getting a peek at, the scene presented to a group of journalists probably would have convinced me that this was some new war movie or straight up action blockbuster, and not one that features a collection of DC villains and antiheroes at its core.
The set in question is called “Jotunheim” and it’s apparently an objective Task Force X needs to conquer in The Suicide Squad. But for all intents and purposes, this could be the kind of Nazi fortress that the gritty characters of movies...

Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and everyone’s favourite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese.
Trekking through a jungle teeming with militant adversaries and guerrilla forces at every turn, the Squad is on a search-and-destroy mission with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave…and Amanda Waller’s government techies in their ears, tracking their every movement.

When James Gunn told us several months ago that The Suicide Squad is “less sentimental” than Guardians of the Galaxy, he wasn’t kidding. You can see that for yourself by watching the latest trailer for The Suicide Squad.
While the latest round of sizzle reel footage is not as foul-mouthed or gruesome as the early red-band trailer we got—which featured King Shark, an anthropomorphic Great White, eating a man whole—the new trailer reveals we’ll be diving deeper into DC Extended Universe lore. Hence at the very top, Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller coolly intones, “Robert DuBois. He’s in prison for putting Superman in the ICU with a kryptonite bullet.”
James Gunn has hinted about this before—including to us when he said “how cool is that?” about the kryptonite bullet. But as he added, “Also what a dick.”
