Writing a feature film is easy. All you need is one gimmicky logline, as cheap and single-serving-disposable as a coffee pod from the complimentary hotel room K-Cup spinner. Once you stumble upon one of these so-called “high concept” ideas, the script practically writes, sells and produces itself. It’s creative work for stupid babies, as all filmmakers will surely agree–totally unlike, in other words, the act of conceptualizing an entire episodic series, a demonstration of storytelling virtuosity so complex and adult it straddles the border between ancient Euclidean geometry and New Age witchcraft.
Okay, so maybe that’s a little extreme. But for aspiring series creators and showrunners, structuring a workable, potentially long-running television concept requires imagination and problem-solving on both the micro- and macro- levels–a mastery of tone, plot and characterization across variable interlocking units of temporal storytelling: scenes, dramatic acts, full episodes, multi-episode arcs and complete seasons.

The Film Independent Screenwriting Lab is 25 years old. Can you believe it? It’s officially old enough to rent a car! And sure, hardshell clams and giant tortoises can live for centuries, but you don’t reach the quarter-century mark as a Hollywood talent incubator without substance, value and tangible success.
But more than that, this year’s cohort of freshly announced Screenwriting Lab Fellows are special. Why? Because! We’re in the midst of celebrating #AD30, aka the 30th anniversary of Film Independent’s Artist Development programs. And like its elder sibling Project Involve (which got the whole ball of wax rolling in ‘93), the Screenwriting Lab has been an essential industry resource, whether your looking to develop your own skills or tap new talent.
“We’re thrilled to support this exceptional group of filmmakers, who bring compassion, authenticity and curiosity to their work exploring unique communities and characters,” says Dea Vazquez,...

This year's Film Independent Spirit Awards – the 38th — announced their nominations. And it's shaping up to potentially be a very good ceremony for Everything Everywhere All At Once, TÁR, Women Talking and more.
The awards will be handed out on 4 March, though other details are in flux: broadcast for the last few years on us cable channel IFC, the ceremony's organisers are currently looking for a new TV home. Still, the celebration of indie movies will go ahead as planned.
And while the Indie Spirits don't tend to be a huge Oscar indicator, we'd expect at least a few of the nominees to also show up on the Academy Awards nominations list, to be announced on 24 January.

Film Independent has set the participants and projects for its sixth annual Episodic Lab — an intensive program, designed to provide individualized story and career development for emerging television writers with original pilots. The list includes Christopher Au (Cloak & Data), Miguel Orozco & Boris Rodriguez (East Los Aliens), Terry Dawson (Makeba) Gg Hawkins (Murder Podcast), Sarah Mokh (Room 099), and the duo of Ben Gonzales & Erica Bardin (The Deed).

“Emergency” begins with a fairly familiar college comedy premise — a party challenge.
Best friends and seniors Kunle (Donald Elise Watkins) and Sean (Rj Cyler) set out to hit up every major Greek party on their campus circuit, something that was long ago dubbed a “Legendary Tour.” But being two young Black men in a not-your-average college party movie, the fun is over before it begins. Their epic night is abruptly interrupted by the sudden appearance of a young white girl, who the guys find passed out in their living room. Together with their friend and comedy sidekick Carlos (Sebastian Chacon), this trio is faced with an impossible dilemma: Whether to call 911 or not.
What ensues is a darkly funny social satire that teeters on the verge of horror at every turn — a scathing reflection of the everyday occurrences that can too quickly turn horrific for young Black men.

There’s a moment in writer K.D. Dávila and director Carey Williams' (R+J) piercing, trenchant socio-political, feature-length adaptation of their award-winning Sundance Film Festival short, Emergency, where three big, tough-talking Black dudes drop all pretense of macho posturing once a drunk blonde girl stumbles into view, comically running away to the home of their stunned friend. They, like the raptly engaged audience on the other side of the digital screen, immediately know what’s up. They, like we, know the real-life danger the situation poses to them and their future, responding accordingly with instant, irrefutable logic. It’s race, racism, and the threat of racialized police violence in a microcosm. For the three college seniors at the center of Emergency -- Sean (Rj Cyler), whose brother owns the home,...

Two best friends, one drunk stranger, and a pretty messed up memorable night: It’s a total “Emergency.”
Director Carey William’s Sundance breakout premieres stars Donald Elise Watkins and Rj Cyler as college seniors looking to get down for Spring Break. But their “legendary tour” of the most elite parties takes an unexpected turn after the roommates discover a drunk, semi-conscious woman (Maddie Nichols) in their apartment. Even worse: Their roommate, played by Sebastian Chacon, has no idea when the girl appeared.
As the college students debate over calling the cops to report a drunk white woman nearly passed out at the home of two Black men with their Latino roommate, they decide to transport the girl somewhere safe themselves. Meanwhile, her sister (Sabrina Carpenter) is also trying to find them.
K.D. Dávila penned the script and also was behind director Williams’ 2018 short film of the same name.

Another Sundance favorite is making its way to wider audiences, and this one looks like intense. "Emergency" follows two college best friends, both Black, as they attempt to help an unconscious girl they find in their apartment without calling the police. It's an interesting premise for a serious thriller or drama, but "Emergency" throws a major curveball from the start: it's actually a comedy. Check out the first trailer below.
The idea for "Emergency" comes from a short film directed by Carey Williams ("R#J") and written by K.D. Dávila ("Motherland: Fort Salem"). The short won a Special Jury Prize at Sundance in 2018, and...

The filmmakers behind some of this year’s Oscar-nominated live action shorts used their films as a platform to bring awareness about issues ranging from bride kidnappings in Kyrgyzstan, to the dehumanization of individuals in the U.S. correctional system.
The directors and screenwriters of “Ala Kachuu – Take and Run,” “The Dress” and “Please Hold” sat down for a conversation with TheWrap’s Brian Welk, to discuss the importance of presenting pressing issues to audiences despite obstacles such as having a low budget, tight deadlines and in some cases, a language barrier.
“I think it’s really important that the whole world try to watch this thing going on in countries like Kyrgyzstan. Only when the people are watching, when we’re aware of the fates of other people — things can change,” German-Swiss filmmaker Maria Brendle commented about her film “Ala Kachuu” about a young Kyrgyz woman named Sezim who dreams of attending college.

Chicago – The 2022 Sundance Film Festival heads into Day Three after Opening Night and a full slate of films for Day Two. Like last year, the festival is virtual and online, meaning anyone/anywhere with a ticket or a pass (link) can indulge in the film offerings throughout the festival, which runs until January 30th.
One of the elements that cinema does best is to reflect back from the screen, as a mirror to our era. That’s the type of films that Sundance presents best, finding voices who will reflect back to us in inclusiveness, subject matter and storytelling. Films also create empathy, as Roger Ebert once observed, and it is these reflective films that increases understanding in our current circumstances.

What if there was more to the Goldilocks story?
Picture this: when the three Bears (who are in college) get home, Goldilocks has eaten all the porridge, got drunk, and is now passed out on the living room floor. However, instead of doing something about it, they drive around town for hours arguing about whether they take her to the hospital or leave her on the front doorstep of a frat house because they fear police retaliation.
I’ve just summed up director Carey Williams’ new film Emergency which had its debut at the Sundance Festival on opening night in the U.S. Dramatic Section. Starring Rj Cyler, Donald Elise Watkins, Maddie Nichols and Sabrina Carpenter, these college kids engage in errors without the comedy. The movie makes it difficult to become engrossed in its social commentary without feeling it’s making a mockery of its message. Maybe that’s the point?...

Film Independent has selected six women from underrepresented communities for its fifth annual Episodic Lab, also naming the recipient of this year’s grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.
The writers selected, who will hone their original pilots during their time in the Lab, are Carmen Brie, Marissa Díaz, Razan Ghalayini, Steph Ouaknine, Lisa Sanaye Dring and Anna Vecellio.
Vecellio is also the recipient of the $10,000 Alfred P. Sloan Episodic Grant, and will use these funds to support the development of her pilot, Mary Mallon, uncovering the true story of the Irish-born cook otherwise known as Typhoid Mary.
This year’s Episodic Lab will be a two-week virtual program helping to further the careers of its Fellows by introducing them to industry veterans, including showrunners, creative producers and executives, who can offer guidance on both the craft and business of writing episodic content. A final networking and pitch event...

Rounding up the best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood, as voted on by hundreds of film executives, The Black List has been a strong resource to clue one in on projects to potentially anticipate, but first, to kickstart Hollywood on bringing them to screen. Today we have this year’s edition.
Topping the 2020 list is Sophie Dawson’s social media satire cannibal film Headhunter, while others include Cat Wilkins’ comedy Two-Faced, which Taraji P. Henson is set to make as her directorial debut, as well as the sci-fi scripts If You Were the Last and Bring Me Back, and much more.

The 16th annual Black List survey was released on Monday, showcasing 80 of the most popular un-produced scripts from up-and-coming screenwriters.
This year’s list was compiled from suggestions of over 375 film executives, who contributed up to 10 feature screenplays that were written in, or somehow uniquely associated with 2020 and will not begin principal photography during the year. Scripts had to receive mentions from at least seven of those executives to be included on this year’s Black List.
The first survey was released in 2005. Since then many of the included scripts have gone on to be produced, often to great acclaim. Among the most notable entries are “Argo,” “Spotlight,” “Juno,” “American Hustle,” “Slumdog Millionaire,” and “The Revenant.” Recent Black List-appearing films include Melina Matsoukas’s 2019 movie “Queen & Slim,” written by Lena Waithe with a story co-authored by James Frey, which was featured on the 2018 Black List; and Emerald Fennell’s “Promising Young Woman,...
