Unicef USA has appointed star of Netflix’s adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize winning novel All the Light We Cannot See, Aria Mia Loberti, as the organization’s newest Ambassador.
The announcement comes while Loberti is advocating on Capitol Hill for equitable access to education and recognition of how the climate crisis disproportionately impacts women and girls.
Loberti, a lifelong activist, began working with Unicef USA in 2022. In addition to traveling with Unicef to Kosovo to see the organization’s work firsthand, she has supported Unicef USA’s efforts to pass the Read Act Reauthorization in the United States as well as used her platform to amplify the voices of youth changemakers.

For the 10th year in a row, the Scad Savannah Film Festival, the 26th edition of which ran from Oct. 21 through Oct. 28, was the place to be for documentary filmmakers and documentary lovers — specifically on Oct. 25, when The Hollywood Reporter presented and your humble correspondent hosted the fest’s Docs to Watch panel that brings together the directors of up to 10 of the year’s finest documentary features.
Over the past nine years, 45 films were nominated for the best documentary feature Oscar, 19 of which were first highlighted as Docs to Watch. And in seven of those nine years, one of the Docs to Watch went on to win the best documentary feature Oscar: 2015’s Amy, 2016’s O.J.: Made in America, 2017’s Icarus, 2018’s Free Solo, 2019’s American Factory, 2021’s Summer of Soul and 2022’s Navalny. For its 21st edition, the Unforgettable Gala, which annually fetes Asian Americans in entertainment, arts and culture, will officially be opening its awards categories to talent from Asia and the Pacific Islands. Although the event has in the past honored Asian stars with crossover impact such as Minha Kim (Pachinko), Shohei Ohtani and Psy, the announcement indicates that Unforgettable will take on a more global focus, as it partners with AsiaLab, a Seoul-based entertainment and content platform that seeks to facilitate “One Asia” through collaborations with Api stars and influencers.
For now, Character Media, the publishing company that founded and produces Unforgettable each year, is planning to hold the gala at its usual Beverly Hilton location on Dec. 16 but notes that the date could be pushed to the first quarter of 2024, depending on the status of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

Multiple Academy Award-winner Anthony Hopkins has signed on to star in “Those About to Die,” director Roland Emmerich’s upcoming historical drama about gladiators in the early Roman Empire, the show’s studio, AGC Television, announced Wednesday.
Hopkins, the first major cast member announced for the project, will portray Roman Emperor Vespasian, best known to modern people as the ruler ultimately responsible for the brutal defeat of the Judean revolt of 66-73 C.E., and whose public works projects included the Colosseum of Rome. He reigned from 69-79 C.E., giving us some idea of when the series takes place.

The HBO documentary “38 at the Garden” chronicles former NBA player Jeremy Lin’s meteoric rise to fame in February 2012 after he scored 38 points against Kobe Bryant and the Lakers at Madison Square Garden.
It was the fourth game in a 10-game hot streak that saw the New York Knicks point guard go from bench player to leading scorer. Lin nabbed the covers of Time and Sports Illustrated, was named Breakthrough Athlete of the Year at the Espy Awards, and won the adoration of millions. The overwhelming public and media attention was dubbed “Linsanity” — and at its very center was a 23-year-old Asian American kid who just wanted to put out his best game.
“I had this love/hate, but primarily hate, relationship with Linsanity for quite a few years,” Lin said at a recent FYC event for “38 at the Garden,” which is on the Oscars shortlist for Documentary Short Film.

On Wednesday evening, Jeremy Lin, the basketball star whose 2012 run of greatness with the New York Knicks sparked a period of “Linsanity,” came to LA’s Museum in Tolerance for a screening of the Oscar-shortlisted HBO documentary short 38 at the Garden — a film that contrasts the pride that the Linsanity era brought Asian-Americans with the recent rise of hate directed at them — wearing brand new clothes and shoes. That was because, he revealed, he hadn’t planned to be there, but when he decided days earlier to leave the league in China in which he had been playing, he felt it was important to show his support for a film that, in his view, is less about him than a crisis that he wants to help shine a light on.

The success of Taiwanese-American basketball player Jeremy Lin is framed by a consideration of its significance to the wider Asian-American community in Franch Chi’s debut short documentary in the face of ingrained institutional racism. The 38 At The Garden refers to the number of points scored by Lin during a head-to-head for the New York Knicks against Kobe Bryant’s LA Lakers at NYC’s Madison Square Garden in 2012.
Although this is a largely straightforward mixture of talking heads and archive footage showing Lin’s rise to fame, the use of animation adds welcome variation and it is powered by contagious enthusiasm, not just from famous Asian-American contributors including comics Hasan Minhaj and Jenny Yang, Lin’s teammates and some Knicks fans.
Lin also had a deep well of enthusiasm for the game, which is just as well given the anti-Asian bias he faced when he was starting out. The stereotypical way Asian-Americans.

Because the New York Knicks play basketball in the country’s largest media market, the entire hoops universe finds out when anything happens, good or bad, to an underperforming NBA franchise that hasn’t won a title since 1973. But something more than media clout was at work in February 2012, when a backup rookie point guard named Jeremy Lin came off the bench for a struggling Knicks squad in an early-season game — and quickly became the biggest story in sports.
38 at the Garden, an HBO documentary short released in October, revisits “Linsanity,” the giddy mania that gripped New York City as Lin achieved liftoff with the Knicks and made an impact beyond basketball.

As “Meet The Press” unveils their slate of documentaries for the sixth annual Meet The Press Film Festival at Doc NYC, Chuck Todd has embraced highlighting films boiling political tensions to bring a new understanding to these issues outside of the red blue prism.
“If you run towards the controversy, you can break a barrier,” Todd told TheWrap ahead of the festival’s debut. “Make the people three-dimensional figures so they’re not treated like two-dimensional political props.”
This year’s festival, which is set in New York for the first time, spotlights short documentaries that dive deep into global migration, equality in sports, civil and gender rights, and racism in the criminal justice system — issues that heavily drove voters to the polls in last week’s midterm election. As results continue to come in, Todd imagines the election’s aftermath might enhance, or even shift, audience’s understanding of a film.

Exclusive: Tennis great Michael Chang, who became the youngest winner of a major tournament singles championship when he beat Ivan Lendl in the 1989 French Open at age 17, will be the subject of a ’30 for 30′ documentary by ESPN Films.

He had 34 wins on the Atp tour from 1988 to 2000 before retiring in 2003.
The film, titled American Son, has completed production. It is the directing debut of Jay Caspian Kang, a writer, podcaster and TV correspondent. The three Oscar categories that recognize films which run 40 minutes or shorter — best live action short, best documentary short and best animated short — are often regarded as “minor,” but this year’s contenders for them will include some major names.
On the heels of recent Academy Awards ceremonies at which Oscars for short films were taken home by the likes of retired NBA legend Kobe Bryant, former NFL player Matthew A. Cherry and Hollywood A-lister Riz Ahmed, The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Taylor Swift’s filmmaking debut All Too Well: The Short Film — which the pop star has described as “a film about an effervescent, curious young woman who ends up completely out of her depth” — received an Oscar-qualifying run, making it eligible for the best live action short Oscar, and is working with a top consulting firm to guide its awards campaign.

“Chinatown doesn’t change for anybody,” says Jade Wu’s Dai Mah late in Evan Jackson Leong’s “Snakehead,” the kind of line that sounds like an intentional callback to 1974’s “Chinatown.” That’s not surprising, as so much of Leong’s long-time passion project plays like a tribute to the Old Masters of cinema. “Snakehead” doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but considering its all-Asian cast and bent toward chronicling women in power, there’s an air of something truly special to the crime drama, especially in Shuya Chang’s contemplative performance.
An opening title card tells us that for $50,000, Chinese immigrants can be sent to the United States, where they will be then forced into prostitution and other illegal jobs as a means of paying off the debt to the person who brought them, the eponymous “snakehead.” Sister Tse (Chang) is one such woman, working to survive in America...
