The 1930s – more films about women, more films about working life. And often the two overlapped. You watch a film made today, it’s brutally clear that the people who made it rarely have to be anywhere In the ‘30s, at the height of the studio system, the entire creative force behind a picture worked 9-5 on the studio lot, just like anyone else. They had a workplace. And while many made a great deal more money than the characters they were depicting, they knew what it was to hold a job. That mindset, that constant awareness of money and office work and routine, bleeds into the pictures of the period.

The Britain's Got Talent judges made their final decision about which acts will perform in the live semi-finals in tonight's show.
After bringing the auditions to a close, Simon Cowell, Alesha Dixon, Amanda Holden and David Walliams had the tough task of cutting down 200 acts to just 40.
The chosen ones will join the five golden buzzer acts - Calum Scott, Boyband, Revelation Avenue, Entity Allstars and Lorraine Bowen - in the live shows next week.
As usual, the judges had several disagreements during the decision process, with David Walliams ripping up one act's photo to make a point.
Even when the choices had been made some of the judges may have had regrets, with Simon Cowell wondering why they had decided to put through Michael Late, Jeffrey Drayton, Narinder Dhani, Mitch and Cally and Peter Lambert.
As Holden told the group that they want to find something "unique" that will...

Tonight's (May 16) sixth round of Britain's Got Talent auditions included some inspiring opera and impressive belly dancing.
However, it was Lorraine the 'crumble lady' that stole the show after David Walliams put her through to the semi-final with his gold buzzer.
Digital Spy rounds up Twitter's reaction to the evening's acts below:

The Good
Groove Thing - 7-11, South Wales
Talent: 70s dance troupe
Tell us more: Now here's a dance troupe with a difference. We loved Groove Thing for snubbing hip hop and street dance and going full-blown 70s instead; it was so entertaining. Their choreography was really tight, they had loads of attitude, and they were so good that they were basically like mini adults. It helps, of course, that they were so cute; Ben, the only male of the group, was...

Tonight's third round of Britain's Got Talent audiences saw singing nuns, extreme hula hooping and another slam of the Golden Buzzer.
But it was Simon Cowell's introduction to Princess the dog hypnotist that left one question on everybody's lips - "Simon Cowell wasn't hypnotised by a dog…. was he?!"
Digital Spy rounds up Twitter's thoughts about tonight's episode:
Matthew the musical nun opened the show to lots of buzzing
At what point do you sit down and decide that dressing as a nun and sitting on a moving piano is your calling in life? #bgt

No offence meant, nun taken. #Bgt pic.twitter.com/fTU6NLJbUp

A new two-part Luther special is underway, no doubt boasting all the growly detective work we’ve come to expect and love from everyone’s favourite bellowing London copper. What it won’t have, according to The Wrap’s scoop, is Ruth Wilson’s whipsmart sociopath to provide a menacing yin to the big man’s righteous yang. Instead, Game Of Thrones’ flinty Ygritte, Rose Leslie, has signed on for the show’s return, alongside The Inbetweeners Movie’s Laura Haddock.Leslie will play a new character called Emma Jones, although whether she’ll be filling the psycho gap remains to be. Wilson’s Alice Morgan was one of the best things in Luther’s previous three seasons, simultaneously sinister and alluring and occasionally even outmatching the careworn copper with a cool intellect that was always calculating, always running the numbers. Like an old-fashioned femme fatale or a flirtier Moriarty,...
