By the time “Space Force” premiered in 2020, it already felt outdated. Even with a starry cast including Steve Carell and John Malkovich, and all the money a Netflix greenlight can afford, its soft jokes about a Trumpian president run amok landed with barely any impact. Carell, who co-created “Space Force” with “The Office” producer Greg Daniels, once played one of the most famous bosses in TV history. But as Mark Naird, Space Force’s commanding general whose characterization veered between hapless and ruthless, he never truly clicked into gear. The shape of a good show was there, even as it never quite materialized. Luckily, “

Netflix’s new comedy Space Force arrived on Friday and was a big hit with viewers, quickly rising over the weekend to become the streaming service’s most popular title despite a lukewarm critical reception, beating out the likes of fantastic animated fantasy Avatar: The Last Airbender, Adam Sandler vehicle Uncut Gems, dark comedy Dead to Me and improving superhero series The Flash. And to date, it’s still the most popular thing on the platform.
With The Office being such an institution of American TV, the notion of a new workplace comedy from its creator and star was always going to attract interest, and the core concept has a great deal of potential to work with. Inspired by Trump’s narcissistic desire to militarize space, the series follows newly promoted four-star general Mark Naird (Steve Carell) as he’s placed in charge of the laughable new branch of the...

“Think about how much of politics is online right now through Twitter,” reflects Ben Schwartz about playing a media manager on the new Netflix comedy “Space Force.” He adds that managing social media “is a valuable asset for a company that wants to spin stories for good or for bad, and just try to get the word out about what ‘Space Force’ does to begin with.” Watch the full exclusive interview above.

(This article contains major spoilers for the Season 1 finale of Netflix’s “Space Force”)
“Space Force” on Netflix is a pretty light and chill show for the most part, but it really ramps up in the Season 1 finale. And it doesn’t come close to resolving its various major plot threads, as the first season concludes with multiple cliffhangers.
It’s quite a mess of things that go down right at the end of the finale, with two major developments. The Space Force’s team on the moon attacks the Chinese moon base, rendering it uninhabitable, but then when they return to their own base, they find that the Chinese have sabotaged them right back. And Maggie Naird (Lisa Kudrow) breaks out of prison with the help of her prison guard girlfriend, Louise.

John Malkovich appears in our latest installment of The First Time, timed to the May 29th premiere of the new Greg Daniels/Steve Carell series Space Force, in which he stars alongside Carell. The legendarily droll actor discusses his first Zoom happy hour, his first time singing folk gospel, teaching himself to play the guitar, and meeting co-star Jimmy O. Yang.
“I immediately thought Jimmy was very funny,” he says of the Silicon Valley actor. “Very smart, super dry. He actually reminds me of my own son in certain ways.

As a huge fan of The Office and Steve Carell, I couldn't have been more excited for Greg Daniels's new show Space Force. Called "a workplace comedy centered around the people tasked with creating a sixth branch of the armed services," I immediately assumed that Space Force would follow in the documentary-style steps of both The Office and Parks and Recreation. I was incorrect. Instead, it is a single-camera spoof of the actual Space Force, with a focus on four-star General Mark Naird (Steve Carell), his daughter Erin Naird (Diana Silvers), and those he works with like Dr. Adrian Mallory (John Malkovich).
At its very core, the humor I loved on Daniels's other shows is present. There are even a few moments with Mark Naird alone that I could certainly feel the presence of Michael Scott. Similarly to Daniels's other shows, Space Force uses its short first season mainly...

The following contains spoilers for Space Force episode 10.
Your average sitcom doesn’t need to have a lesson at the end of each episode or season to be effective. Space Force, as created by sitcom master Greg Daniels, decides to go for one anyway. And that lesson can best be summed up as “an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind…or at least stranded on the moon with no shelter or life support.”
Yes, Space Force does make it to the moon in the end. Here in the real world, it’s unknown how long the United States’ new space force branch will take to get to the moon (or if that is even a short term goal). On Space Force, the branch led by Mark Naird (Steve Carell) only needs a year and some change. By episode nine, Commander Angela Ali (Tawny Newsome) and her high...

This Space Force review contains no spoilers and is based on all 10 episodes.
Steve Carell, The Office-star turned Hollywood leading man, made his return to television last year with The Morning Show. As the flagship series for Apple TV+, featuring another high-profile return to TV (Jennifer Aniston), the show cost an exorbitant $15 million an episode. However, high production costs and loads of talent in front of and behind the camera couldn’t save The Morning Show from being received tepidly from critics. With an embarrassment of riches at their disposal, the consensus was that surely Apple could do better.
Unfortunately, Carell’s second attempt at a post-Office series for rival Netflix leaves a similar impression. Space Force, which debuts on the streaming service on May 29th, pairs Carell with an inspired cast featuring John Malkovich, Ben Schwartz, Jimmy O. Yang and Lisa Kudrow. Now that it’s one of the most beloved comedies on streaming, across multiple generations, it can be hard to remember that The Office was not well-received when it debuted on NBC in the spring of 2005. It’s not just that the mockumentary format was relatively new to American TV, but that the show’s original conception of Michael Scott was far more malevolent and abrasive than he would become. In particular, the scene in the pilot episode — which was beat-for-beat a remake of the premiere of the British original...

For the second time in as many weeks, this TV review ought to be framed around what our chosen series isn’t rather than what it actually is: i.e., “Space Force” is not “The Office.” Despite sharing a creator (Greg Daniels), star (Steve Carell), and loose genre affiliation (a workplace comedy), the new Netflix series isn’t shot in a mockumentary format, nor is Carell playing an infuriating buffoon. More to the point of what made NBC’s sitcom such a massive, re-watchable hit, “Space Force” doesn’t find humor in painfully awkward yet universally relatable office drudgery, so much as silly scenarios set against a grand backdrop.
It’s a farce and, at most, a light satire when it comes to politics. Despite sharing a name with the American military’s newest and most widely ridiculed branch, Carell and Daniels only take mild pokes at their characters’ odd...

When Donald Trump and the executive branch of the U.S. government announced the creation of a sixth division of the armed forces called “Space Force,” many of us had the same idea. Space…Force? That’s the name? That sounds like a generic Star Trek ripoff you’d find on the front of a DVD in a Lagos street market.
Steve Carell and Greg Daniels, star of and creator of NBC’s The Office, respectively, had a slightly different idea altogether. This is going to get us that sweet Netflix money.
Netflix has greenlit a new series from Carell and Daniels based on the Space Force idea, fittingly titled Space Force. Carell and Daniels will produce and Carell will star. The series is described as a workplace comedy about the men and women tasked with creating the actual Space Force based off of the President’s demented ramblings.

Space Force is shaping up to be something special. The upcoming Netflix comedy show reunites The Office creators Greg Daniels and Steve Carell and is based on the newest branch of the United States Military: the titular Space Force. Ever since the real-life announcement was made, the very idea of this has been met with amusement and this new series looks to capitalize on that by showing it as a plucky underdog getting pushed around by the other branches of the military.
We saw a teaser at the start of the month and now, Netflix has released a full trailer, giving us a much better idea of what to expect. At the heart of the show appears to be the relationship between Carell’s four-star General Mark Naird (very disappointed at being given this poisoned chalice of a job) and John Malkovitch’s deadpan scientist Dr. Adrian Mallory. Back in January we reported that Steve Carell, and The Office Executive Producer Greg Daniels we developing a comedy series for Netflix called Space Force. The series is described as “a workplace comedy centered around the people tasked with creating a sixth branch of the armed services… Space Force,” and is loosely based on the Space Force that was officially launched just last month by President Trump. He was quoted, describing the organization, as saying, “Spacecom will defend America’s vital interests in space, the next warfighting domain, and I think that’s pretty obvious to everybody. It’s all about space.” Yeah.
