Mark R. Hailey began his television career at age 6 when he and his younger brother Bruce appeared on camera for the taping of a variety of educational shows produced by WCVE 23, the local PBS station in Richmond, VA, in which their father, Bud Hailey, was the Art Director. In the 1970s channel 23 would often shoot productions on the Hailey farm, and Mark became interested television production.
In 1984 Mark graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University, double majoring in graphic art & design, and film & television production. After graduation he did his internship at WCVE 23, working with many of the same people he had when he was younger. Mark relocated to Annapolis, Maryland to become the Art Director / Associate Producer for Helliwell Productions, a company specializing in aviation safety and training films.
In 1994 he started his own Broadcast Design company, Visionary Magic Design, and his work caught the attention of Black Entertainment Television (BET). What started out as freelance assignments soon became full time when BET asked Mark to join their organization full time. While there he became the senior broadcast designer for shows like Planet Groove, BET Tonight with Tavis Smiley, Teen Summit, BET News and Bobby Jones Gospel. Mark found his work at BET both challenging and rewarding. As one of the only white broadcast designers he had to seamlessly integrate his style to fit the young, urban, hip-hop flavor that BET was known for.
In 1999 Mark was headhunted by NASA Television, and was brought on board as their first Art Director. While at NASA Mark brought his broadcast television design skills to the space agency, and transformed the look of show opens, IDs, promos, and set designs. This body of work would lead to over 60 television awards and 3 Emmy nominations in writing, producing, art direction, and animation.
In addition to his television work, Mark Hailey is also an accomplished Artist; with displays in gallery and art shows. Mark is also a certified personal trainer and writer. In 2001 Mark co-authored and published his first book "Body Mechanics: Complete Fitness Journal & Guide". In 2009 he follow that up with "Body Mechanics - Beginner's Guide to Fitness", and in 2011 published "Fitness Mosaics" which is a collection of his magazine articles on health and fitness.
