There’s a euphoria among film sellers and buyers as SXSW finally convenes Friday in Austin, Texas after a three-year pandemic shutdown.
With the last two editions of the Sundance Film Festival being virtual, and the hybrid edition of TIFF seeing reduced capacities, few industry execs, and a muted atmosphere, SXSW marks the return to packed, receptive audiences; actual live pulses which can trigger good reviews and social media wattage, culminating in what some believe could be an active sales market here in Texas’s capital.
SXSW has a knack for programming comedies, genre, and genre-twisted features; titles which are best experienced by a reactive audience. Sellers previously told Deadline that virtual viewing of such fare at recent fests doesn’t really help their cause. While SXSW is enforcing vaxx cards and mask-wearing indoors, screenings will be at full capacity. In 2019, SXSW drew a reported 73K attendees alone to the...

With Pink Skies Ahead and Holler, Jessica Barden explored two very different perspectives on what it’s like to come of age in America.
Written and directed by Kelly Oxford, the former dramedy centers on Winona, a young writer struggling with an anxiety disorder that drops out of school, and is left to figure out how to move forward in her life.
Holler, from writer-director Nicole Riegel, follows Ruth, a young woman who joins a dangerous and illegal scrap metal crew with her brother, to pay for her education, so that she can one day get out of her small, working-class Ohio town.
While the indies are dissimilar on the surface, in terms of tone and subject matter, they actually have more in common than is immediately apparent.

We’ll say this with cautious optimism: the summer movie season is…back? After the coronavirus pandemic upended the 2020 release calendar, pushing back some of the year’s most hyped films and inspiring new avenues of distribution for others, the summer of 2021 is shaping up as platform for blockbusters (from the latest “Fast and Furious” to the post-apocalyptic survival of the “A Quiet Place” installment all the way through a seventh “Conjuring” film) and rife with discoveries (including some festival hits that date all the way back to 2019).
Of course, the distribution landscape has changed radically over the past year, and not every anticipated summer movie will simply head to the multiplex. This season’s lineup includes a wide variety of viewing options that go beyond the brick and mortar theater. It’s a summer defined by options — not only in terms of what you see, but how you choose to see it.

Kelly Oxford’s debut feature Pink Skies Ahead is the kind of coming-of-age comedy that is destined for cult status, if not full-on indie success. It has all the necessary ingredients of an upper-middle-class coming-of-age comedy: a young woman trying to find herself, a pair of worried, coddling parents, and a crew of comical friends. Additionally, the film takes place in 1998, so there’s a healthy dose of comforting nostalgia with welcome needle-drops from the likes of Hole and The Smashing Pumpkins.

So far, between Kelly Oxford’s “Pink Skies Ahead” and Angel Kristi Williams’ “Really Love,” AFI Fest has delivered some incredible first-features from directors. Maya Cozier’s “She Paradise” is the newest addition to the team. From a narrative perspective, “She Paradise” reminds one of Numa Perrier’s “Jezebel.” Both films center themselves on young Black women who are liberated through their sexuality.

The blue-haired Winona (Jessica Barden), while driving, vents to an unseen man about living with her parents. She fumes, “I want to stick a fork into an electrical socket every minute that I’m there.” A recent-college dropout, the twenty-year-old Winona lives in arrested development with her parents in their Los Angeles suburban home. Winona is flirtatious and provocative. She tiptoes around her supposedly judgmental mom Pamela (Marcia Gay Harden) and works for her father Richard (Michael McKean), as an office assistant (a nepotistic position that requires little work of her).

In first-time director Kelly Oxford’s snappy, super-saturated account of her personal battle with anxiety disorder, “Pink Skies Ahead,” the main character is named Winona, but it’s her best friend Stephanie who does all the shoplifting. It’s like a compulsion: Every time they go to the convenience store, Winona distracts the awkward, androgynous-looking clerk behind the counter while Stephanie roams the candy aisle, filling her pockets. Then they both buy Slurpees to cover their tracks.
This is behavior that would be right at home in high school — or a high school movie, like “Ghost World,” which might explain Winona’s Slurpee-blue dye job — when young people are testing the boundaries of what they can get away with and still largely oblivious to how their actions impact others. But Winona is a 20-year-old college dropout, embodied by “End of the F—ing World” star Jessica Barden, who’s a few years older still,...

Many corners of popular culture, from talk show “Desus & Mero” to sitcom revival “One Day at a Time” to sweatshirts on Instagram, have been putting forward a very positive message about mental health, championing therapy while also destigmatizing anxiety. That spirit of supportiveness suffuses “Pink Skies Ahead,” a coming-of-age tale of a young writer who learns to let go of her anxiety over having anxiety. (The film has been acquired by MTV Studios for worldwide release following its premiere at AFI 2020.)
It’s not necessarily breaking new ground, nor does it stretch the boundaries of the genre in the way films like “Diary of a Teenage Girl” or “Ghost World” have. But the heartfelt, autobiographical elements in writer-director Kelly Oxford’s storytelling, coupled with an appealing and empathetic performance by Jessica Barden (“The End of the F***ing World”), provide a real understanding of mental health that so often escapes...

Kelly Oxford can do anything, it seems: She’s a bestselling author, a social media star, and a newly minted filmmaker. The Canadian native first caught the world’s attention with her funny and confessional Twitter account, which eventually led to a book deal and multiple optioned scripts that drew the attentions of everyone from Drew Barrymore and Jessica Alba to Diablo Cody and Cameron Crowe.
And she did it all while managing an anxiety disorder she was diagnosed with at the tender age of 19. As a 43-year-old single mother of three, Oxford still has to deal with those feelings — she’s the first one to tell you they never just go away — but now she’s harnessed them to craft her directorial debut, “Pink Skies Ahead,” which debuts October 18 at AFI Fest.

The 34th annual AFI Fest said Monday that Showtime’s Errol Morris-directed documentary My Psychedelic Love Story will close the festival next month.
The movie follows LSD high priest Timothy Leary and how he became a narc in 1974 and abandoned the millions he urged to turn on, tune in and drop out. “This was going to a transformative event, and with the cancellation, the filmmakers were left stranded and scrambling.”
SXSW film head Janet Pierson said on Friday (13) that despite the cancellation of the physical festival, staff will ensure all of this year’s competition sections can be judged via screener links.
At time of writing Screen understands almost every filmmaker in every section including the 10 narrative feature and 10 documentary feature competition categories had opted into the plan. Only one filmmaker of a short had not opted in and at time of writing organisers were waiting to hear back from the teams behind two high school shorts.

Ex-Warner Bros president Greg Silverman has set Pink Skies Ahead as the first film to be made through his Stampede label. Kelly Oxford wrote the script and will make her feature directing debut, and Jessica Barden will star.
Pink Skies Ahead tells the story of a wild young woman whose life unravels after dropping out of college, moving in with her parents, and being diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. The film is based on the essay No Real Danger from Oxford’s second book, When You Find Out The World Is Against You.
Barden’s screen turns include Jungleland, The End of the F***ing World and The Lobster. Production starts in June with Stampede producing and financing. Silverman and Lisa Zambri are producing with Divide/Conquer’s Greg Gilreath and Adam Hendricks. Gideon Yu and Zac Locke are exec producers.
Barden is represented by ICM Partners, Curtis Brown and Viewpoint.
