Cult wines are a very American and, more specifically, Californian phenomenon. Akin to another industry-beloved status symbol, the Hermès Birkin bag, they are meticulously crafted, sought-after commodities that are exceedingly scarce and difficult to procure. The term rose in popularity in Napa Valley in the 1990s to describe flashy cabernet sauvignon blends with perfect scores by top wine critics, outrageous prices and insatiable demand.
Master sommelier Vincent Morrow
“Most of these wines were simply well-made, small-production wines and the owners had no intention of multiyear wait lists,” says master sommelier Vincent Morrow, wine director of Michelin-starred Press Restaurant in Napa’s St. Helena.
“Given that a vineyard will take at least six to seven years before it’s producing optimum fruit, and it only bears fruit once a year, the economic nature of these small vineyards was that production could not scale at the pace of any rapid increase in demand.

John Wilkes Booth was desperate to be famous. Instead, he became infamous as the man who assassinated President Abraham Lincoln. He had been born in 1838 as the ninth of ten children of the famed actor Junius Brutus Booth. Though he had shown talent, his career was often derailed by his emotional instability. His older brother Edwin Booth was considered one of the top actors of the day.
The handsome younger Booth had received strong reviews in a New York production of “Richard III” with the New York Herald declaring him a “veritable sensation.” Booth even told the paper “I’m determined to be the villain.” A staunch supporter of the Confederacy, by 1864 he had recruited several co-conspirators in his plan to kidnap Honest Abe. Their attempts failed, but on April 14, 1865, he learned Lincoln would attend the comedy “Our American Cousin” at Ford’s Theater that evening, During the third act...

The films vying for the 2024 Best Sound Oscar are “The Creator,” “Maestro,” “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” “Oppenheimer,” and “The Zone of Interest.” Our current odds indicate that “Oppenheimer” (31/10) will prevail, followed in order of likelihood by “The Zone of Interest” (37/10), “Maestro” (9/2), “Mission: Impossible” (9/2), and “The Creator” (9/2).
This year’s Best Sound award will be the fourth handed out since the former Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing categories were consolidated ahead of the 93rd Oscars. The 17 craftspeople involved in this race have collectively amassed 70 previous nominations and 16 wins for their audio work, with the largest share of those bids (30%) belonging to Kevin O’Connell (“Oppenheimer”). With an Oscars resume dating back to 1984, he stands as one of this lineup’s nine returning champions, having memorably broken his unprecedented losing streak on his 21st bid for “Hacksaw Ridge” (2017).

Oscar-nominated sound mixer Steve Morrow has recorded quite a few party scenes in his career, in movies such as “Don’t Worry Darling,” “The Prom” and “Babylon.”
When it came to Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro,” Morrow had to figure out how to capture the sound in a prominent party scene that takes place at the Bernstein family apartment in the Dakota Building in New York. It’s a key moment that transitions the film from black and white to 1970s color, anchored by Carey Mulligan’s Felicia smoking a cigarette, staring out the window at Central Park while a bustling party surrounds her.
Morrow knew how the film would transition visually, but his team was tasked with capturing sound from both Felicia’s and Lenny’s (Cooper) circles. “We filmed it at the same time,” explains Morrow. “I’m listening to both parties happening and trying to understand who’s saying what and when.

“Maestro” makeup artist Kazu Hiro misses Bradley Cooper’s Lenny. “This is the first show I felt like, ‘Oh, at the end of the filming, we can keep going. He was so fun.'”
For them, every shooting day began with hours in the chair as the two-time Oscar-winning makeup artist Hiro silently applied Cooper’s makeup that would allow him to portray 40 years of the composer-conductor’s colorful life.
“We don’t talk much,” said Hiro, who was part of a “Maestro” panel that I hosted for Netflix’s Tudum event January 13. “It’s a long day, so it’s quite tough. And he asked me to do the makeup by myself. Usually we make a team, but he noticed that everybody has a different brain and eyes and hands. He needed space. That helped Bradley to focus and get ready for the film.”

Few films have arrived in theaters saddled with more baggage than "Twilight Zone: The Movie." That the anthology film featuring segments from John Landis, Steven Spielberg, Joe Dante, and George Miller actually arrived in the first place was something of a surprise -- and for many in the entertainment industry, it wasn't a welcome one.
The production became a wholly avoidable tragedy on June 23, 1982, when a helicopter crashed on the set of Landis' segment, "Time Out," killing Vic Morrow and child actors Myca Dinh Le and Renee Shin-Yi Chen. The show does not always have to go on, but the movie was nevertheless completed and released (rather insensitively) on June 24, 1983, leading off with "Time Out". For some, it was like watching a snuff film.

‘Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan’ (Photo © 2002 by Paramount Pictures)
Created by the late Gene Roddenberry, Star Trek has been around in one form or another since the first episode of Star Trek: The Original Series (Tos) debuted on NBC on Sept. 8, 1966.
Tos lasted three seasons and 79 episodes. However, it found a new life in syndication. With the success of 1977’s Star Wars and 1977’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind (during the nascent days of the summer blockbuster), long-time Trekkies were hoping to see their beloved characters on the big screen, which they did in 1979’s Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
Today, Trek is a pop culture juggernaut. It has to its name 13 feature films, eight TV series, three animated series, and numerous novels, comics, action figures, and other merchandise. Pretty impressive. Not to mention pretty intimidating if you want to go where no one has gone before for the first time.

Lauren Morrow destroys the bogus imagery of social media on her debut full-length album People Talk, a record full of devastatingly honest and real-life lyrics delivered with a mix of vulnerability and confidence. “Nobody But Me” is the pinnacle, a song inspired by Morrow’s own experiences as a woman in the music business. Like the rest of the album, it boasts hints of Britpop (Morrow is a massive Oasis fan and once recorded a version of “Talk Tonight” with 400 Unit guitarist Sadler Vaden), but stands out for its piano-based structure.

Many people think Tom Cruise dancing around in his underwear to Bob Seger in Risky Business is his most iconic scene. To others, it’s him saying he feels the need for speed in Top Gun or infiltrating the vault in Mission: Impossible. Or “I want the truth!” Or “show me the money!” But, to me, one of the scenes that best sums up Tom Cruise as one of the coolest movie stars ever is his entrance in Barry Levinson’s Rain Man. We see the smog-filled backdrop of Los Angeles as a Lamborghini flies across the screen. We see it’s being transported to a car lot where Tom Cruise’s Charlie Babbit, one of the most iconic eighties yuppies, inspects the car while The Belle Stars cover of “Iko Iko” fills the soundtrack. It’s a memorable moment that was so potent composer Hans Zimmer, when he reteamed...

Last October it was revealed the Centre for the Moving Image (Cmi), which produces the festival, had appointed administrators, leaving the future of the festival in doubt.
Today the festival said it would be returning for a special one year-iteration as part of the Edinburgh International Festival, which runs from Aug. 18-23.
The festival program will be led by its new director Kate Taylor, who takes over from Kristy Matheson. Matheson was today unveiled as the new director of the BFI London Film Festival.

On the evening of July 23, 1982, “Animal House” director John Landis was filming a tricky nighttime helicopter scene for “Twilight Zone: The Movie.” The wide-open spaces of Indian Dunes, now part of Santa Clarita, Calif., were standing in for Vietnam, and the scene called for soldiers in a helicopter to pursue actor Vic Morrow, who was carrying two children. When the copter made a turn just above a large mortar round, the special effect explosive detonated, bringing down the helicopter and killing Morrow along with 7-year-old Myca Dinh Le and 6-year-old Renee Shin-Yi Chen.
The devastating accident shook Hollywood, and several months later, Variety announced that “Landis, pilot, others face ‘Twilight’ accident charges.” Landis and other “Twilight Zone” movie crew members were charged with involuntary manslaughter — the same charges “Rust” actor and producer Alec Baldwin and “Midnight Rider” director Randall Miller faced for their roles in on-set deaths.

When @reallyverycrunchy posted her first TikTok on Dec. 31, 2021, the joke was simple: some parents think plastic toys are dangerous. In the three-minute clip, the creator cheekily poked fun at the idea, giving away her kid’s plastic Christmas presents under the guise of safety.
“It’s time for us to choose which gifts we should donate to kids who are less fortunate than you,” she says, smiling into the camera. “By that, I mean whose parents don’t really care about their health and wellbeing.” The video was captioned with the hashtag #crunchymom.

Things aren't always what they seem.
Something that appeared to be a mass-casualty event ended up being more straightforward and much more personal on CSI: Vegas Season 2 Episode 5.
It came down to a matter of perspective.
The paranoia that we all live in today contributes to the early misperception.
With the rampant fear of biochemical weapons, it was little wonder that everyone's minds went there when the guests fell ill at a local university's science department fundraiser.
I mean, who knows what they were working on for which shadowy government or corporate entity and who might be opposed to such research?
So, Maxine mandating hazard suits to protect against the unknown made perfect sense.
But something was going on with Max. She was skittish and was taking it out on everyone around her, especially the well-meaning Beau, who is still feeling his way along in his new role as a CSI.

Asked if he had any regrets in his career, Bob Hoskins didn’t hesitate. “The worst thing I ever did? Super Mario Bros,” the actor said. “It was a f***in’ nightmare. It had a husband-and-wife team directing, whose arrogance had been mistaken for talent.”
He was speaking in 2007, 14 years after starring in the notoriously dysfunctional take on the hit Nintendo video game. And yet the tremor in his voice had been unmistakable. Hoskins had graced the occasional turkey across his decades in the industry. Super Mario Bros was clearly a different class of clunker. He sounded more than slightly scarred by the experience.
Video game adaptations are so ubiquitous nowadays that we tend not to even think of them in those terms any more. The recent Detective Pikachu was received as a surreal kids comedy starring Ryan Reynolds. Last year’s Rampage was sold as a vehicle for Dwayne Johnson...

When news broke that Isabelle Fuhrman would be reprising her role as Esther in a surprise prequel to the 2009 film Orphan, many were skeptical that the now 23 year old actress would be able to convincingly play a young child. At just ten years old, Fuhrman shocked audiences with her terrifying performance as a malevolent 30-something woman masquerading as an innocent little girl in Jaume Collet-Serra’s original film. As the title implies, William Brent Bell’s prequel Orphan: First Kill follows Esther (originally known as Leena) and her murderous adventures before being adopted by the Coleman family, including her bloody escape from the Saarne institute and her affinity for blacklight painting.
Concerns about Fuhrman passing for a child proved to be unfounded and she once again turned in a fantastic performance as the baby-faced killer. Fuhrman does look remarkably young, but even the accomplished actress couldn’t pull off such...

Josh Duhamel is coming in for the assist. The actor made his The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers debut in the season two trailer, released by Disney+ on Aug. 31. But naturally, the team is determined to come out on top, and play even harder than...

Like Billy Idol in “Rebel Yell,” Sam Morrow cries for “more, more, more” in his hard-hitting new song “More.”
A slice of bluesy classic rock that Morrow and his band cut live on the floor at Kingsize Soundlabs in East L.A., “More” finds the Houston native ruminating on the difference between what we want in life and what we need. “Walk in, walk out, baby walk on,” he sings in the first verse, delivering the line with hints of Davis Essex’s Seventies smash “Rock On.”
