Twelve years after the last book in the Twilight series, it’s time to once again decide whether you’re on Team Edward or Team Jacob.
Author Stephenie Meyer recently announced that the long-awaited novel Midnight Sun is set for an official release on August 4th, 2020. Interestingly, this isn’t a direct continuation or even a prequel to the existing story, but rather a retelling of the first Twilight from the point of view of Edward Cullen.
The intention of the book is to show us how Edward reacted to Bella coming into his life. This will specifically explore his feelings on meeting his ‘singer’ (a human whose blood is more tempting than anyone else’s). We’ll see Edward discussing Bella with his fellow vampires, more detail into the lives of the Olympic Coven, their perspective on regular humans and the specifics of Edward’s trip to Alaska after his first meeting with Bella.

Wondering what you’ll watch when The Hunger Games franchise is over? We’ve got some ideas…
As well as sequels, remakes, and comic book adaptations, there’s one kind of movie you can feel fairly sure is going to keep popping up at a cinema near you: young adult adaptations. Stories about teenagers are still doing big business in the book trade, and thanks to Harry Potter, Twilight, and The Hunger Games, Hollywood is convinced of the genre’s appeal, too.
A couple of new franchises have already been kicked off – there’s still at least another Divergent sequel on the way, and another Maze Runner sequel – but what’s more interesting is the list of Ya novels that have been optioned and may soon be taking over the box office. Now, not all of the adaptations on this list will see the light of day,...

It’s summertime, school’s out, and the days are long. That means you’re going to need books. Books to read while lying in the sun on the beach. Books to read at that boring family reunion your parents dragged you to. Books to read while you’re in line for the latest midnight screening, which, oh by the way, is probably based on a book. Here is your summer reading list of books that are currently making their way to the big screen.

I'm not ashamed to admit that I have read and loved books, particularly young-adult books, about vampires, witches, werewolves, fairies, angels, demons and zombies. Those genre books aren't usually what I'm drawn to, but a compelling story is a compelling story, just like a good movie is a good movie -- regardless of genre. Unfortunately, Hollywood keeps focusing so much of its attention on genre young adult franchises (especially those that don't end up delivering at the box office) that the wonderful realistic novels that are being adapted keep falling under the radar. I hope that's about to change this weekend with the release of "The Fault in Our Stars."
The adaptation of John Green's heart-wrenching love story about two teens with cancer has a 78% on Rotten Tomatoes, and it looks like a lock for a No. 1 opening weekend. Other page-to-screen translations of realistic coming-of-age fiction have also...

Now that Universal has a release date set for the long delayed The Seventh Son (which they inherited from Warner Bros. when Legendary Pictures moved away from the studio), they're looking at getting another fantasy young adult adaptation off the ground. THR has word that Universal is adapting Laini Taylor's first book in a fantasy trilogy, Daughter of Smoke & Bone, published in September of 2011. Michael Gracey (who is supposed to direct Tom Hardy as Elton John in Rocketman) will be at the helm of the film which will again feature a female hero, hoping to cash in on the craze surrounding The Hunger Games franchise. The book has plenty of accolades including being named among Publishers Weekly's Best Books of 2011, Huffington Post's Top 10 Young Adult Book of 2011 and also one of The New York Times' Notable Children’s Books of 2011. Here's the official synopsis of the story: Around the world,...

Universal’s “Daughter of Smoke and Bone”, long in development, has finally found someone to hold its hand in former visual effects director Michael Gracey, who will be making his feature film debut on the movie. Gracey’s credits include works on “Double Vision”, “Ned Kelly”, and “The Magician”. Based on the series of Young Adult books by Laini Taylor, “Daughter of Smoke and Bone” tells “the tale of a 17-year-old art student whose father occasionally sends her on errands around the world collecting human teeth for a mysterious purpose. The young woman gradually becomes aware that she is part of an ancient struggle between devils and angels and finds herself in a forbidden romance with a warrior angel.” But she at least gets two hunky guys falling madly in love with her, right? Isn’t that a law in these books? Universal and producer Joe Roth, of course, is...

"The Mortal Instruments" took six years to adapt from a best-selling young adult fantasy to a teen-targeted film franchise, and no one was more invested in how the page-to-screen transformation would work than author Cassandra Clare. Clare spoke to Moviefone about the surreal process of having her supernatural universe turned into a film (now in theaters), and also shared everything from her favorite scenes to her thoughts on the gorgeous cast and her hopes for which fellow authors will have movies made based on their books.

As we told you exactly a week ago, Roth Films teamed up with Jane Startz Productions to acquire film rights to Soman Chainani's fantasy novel The School for Good and Evil, and now they have a studio involved.
Per Deadline, following a spirited auction, Universal Pictures won the property in a seven-figure deal for book and scriptwriting fees. It's an easy fit for Roth and his top exec Palak Patel, both of whom will produce with Jane Startz. Roth and Patel produced Snow White and The Huntsman at Universal, and have a sequel in the works. They are also working with the studio on Daughter of Smoke & Bone, an adaptation of Laini Taylor’s novel that also has franchise potential.
Chainani and Hook scribe Malia Scotch Marmo are attached to write the screenplay. Coincidentally, Scotch Marmo was one of Chainani’s professors when she was in college.

Acclaimed novel Daughter Of Rust And Bone is another young adult tale shaping up to follow The Hunger Games and, soon, The Mortal Instruments onto the big screen. How do we know? Because, it's, like, totally got a producer now. His bedtime stories must be a thing of genius. This time he'll be handling Laini Taylor's Ya novel of a young girl called Karou who balances life as an art student in Prague with a shadier existence in a world of monsters, violence, teeth collection and much strangeness.

Universal Pictures has hired Snow White and The Huntsman producer Joe Roth to develop a feature film adaptation of the Laini Taylor young adult fantasy novel, Daughter Of Smoke & Bone.
It's a creepy story that centers on a "17-year-old art student who is sent by her awful father on travels across the globe to collect teeth for an unspecified but creepy purpose. This leads her to an encounter with an angel and revelations about her family that lead her into adventures involving otherworldly beings." "The Hunger Games" Director: Gary Ross Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Woody Harrelson Rated: PG-13 for intense violent thematic material and disturbing images - all involving teens Common Sense Media: 13+ Moviefone Says: There may be the outlying naysayer or purist who dislikes the direction of the film, but we think this is even more faithfully adapted than the "Harry Potter" movies. Lawrence, who so beautifully portrayed a similarly focused protective sister in "Winter's Bone," is the heart of the movie, just as Katniss is the center of the books. Katniss volunteers herself to take her sister's place in the Hunger Games, a sacrificial act tantamount to death -- because 24 tributes compete and only one emerges alive. There's a substance to Lawrence that makes her perfectly cast as Katniss and other teen protagonists look frivolous by comparison. This is a story of survival and self-discovery and the meaningless brutality of a...

It's always great to see genre titles make it to the awards shows, which is why we're excited that Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk's "American Horror Story" has been nominated for a Golden Globe in the Drama Series category. The Harmon family and their supernatural roommates are up against several other newcomers including the much-loved "Game of Thrones." Congrats also go out to the sharp-tongued Jessica Lange's Constance Langdon, who is nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category.

Who knew there were so many young adult novels floating out there? Franchises, no less, just waiting to be swooped up and turned into a big-time film and, if all goes well, a trilogy or movie franchise of their own. The latest property to get the Hollywood treatment is Laini Taylor’s “Daughter of Smoke & Bone”, which has just been acquired by Universal Pictures after rumors had Paramount being the frontrunner. The books tell the tale of Karou, “a 17-year old art student whose father occasionally sends her on errands around the world, collecting human teeth for a mysterious purpose. The young woman gradually becomes aware that she is part of ancient struggle between devils and angels and finds herself in a forbidden romance with a warrior angel.” You know, same ol 17-year old stuff. Watch “American Idol”, fight devils, get caught up in a forbidden romance with warrior angels.

Earlier we told you about Daughter of Smoke and Bone being in negotiations at Paramount. Deadline reports that the young adult novel by Laini Taylor has ended up at Universal. Paramount ended talks because the asking price was higher than Harry Potter, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo or The Hunger Games when those book deals were optioned. The studio also wanted control in later installments of the series, requiring that they offering creative conversations contingent on the book taking off as a publishing phenomenon. So far, Smoke and Bone has sold a limited amount of copies. Paramount had offered to pay $750,000 but called off the deal.
