Adam McKay’s latest television series is upon us in the form of HBO series “Winning Time: THe Rise of the Lakers Dynasty” from co-creators Max Borenstein (“Worth,” “Godzilla vs. Kong”) and Jim Hecht. As he did previously with “Succession,” McKay directed the show’s pilot episode and enlisted some of his frequent collaborators for help, including current “Don’t Look Up” Oscar nominees editor Hank Corwin and composer Nicholas Brittell.
Based on “Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s” by Jeff Pearlman, the series focuses on the Los Angeles Lakers during the early days of the team’s 1980s dynasty, which saw the team win five NBA championships. The show features an ensemble cast including the likes of John C. Gold Derby’s Experts from major media outlets think someone from “The Handmaid’s Tale” is going to win the Emmy for Best Drama Guest Actress. But who? Five give the edge to Alexis Bledel, who won this category in 2017. But four instead think Mckenna Grace will prevail on her first career nomination. The last two forecast Claire Foy (“The Crown”) will win after previously proving victorious in the lead category. Sophie Okonedo (“Ratched”) and Phylicia Rashad (“This Is Us”) round out the category. In 1997, Gillian Anderson won her first career Emmy Award for playing FBI Agent Dana Scully on Fox’s sci-fi hit “The X-Files.” After nearly tripping on her way up to the stage (watch above), the actress praised Helen Mirren, who presented her with the statuette, and thanked her friends and family. Now, 24 years later, Anderson is on track to claim Emmy #2 thanks to her buzzed-about role as British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher on “The Crown.”

Can Conan O’Brien finally win Best Variety Series? These Experts say he’ll upset ‘Last Week Tonight’
Conan O’Brien took over NBC’s “Late Night” in 1993 — 28 years ago. But after almost three decades in late night he still hasn’t won the top Emmy for variety programs. This past June he ended his latest venture, TBS’s “Conan,” after 11 years on the air, and the television academy subsequently welcomed him back to the race for Best Variety Talk Series. Can he dethrone the five-time reigning champ “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver”?
Though O’Brien’s “Late Night” started in 1993, he wasn’t nominated for the top award until 2003, at which point the Jon Stewart extended universe started winning and has never stopped. Since then, no other talk shows have won. His “Daily Show” won Best Variety Series 10 years in a row (2003-2012). Then after the Emmys split that award into talk and sketch categories, “Daily Show” won again in 2015 for Stewart’s farewell season. In-between, “Daily...

If you’re still marveling over Marvel’s 28 Emmy nominations for its first two ventures in TV, don’t worry, we are as well. Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are once again joined by Kaitlin Thomas, their fellow Expert and our chief Marvel correspondent, to discuss the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s huge Emmy breakthrough — 23 of the nominations are for “WandaVision” — and what categories it could actually win.
The other five bids were for the MCU’s drama entry “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier,” whose biggest nomination was guest actor for Don Cheadle. Now an 11-time nominee, he made headlines for getting nominated for a, uh, rather brief appearance in the first episode of the Disney+ series and remaining unbothered by the haters, but Kaitlin warned everyone (and timed the performance!) last month that the nomination could happen, so we give her the proper props.

Apple TV+’s acclaimed comedy “Ted Lasso” returns for its second season next week, and critics are already praising the new episodes as “more ambitious” and “an impressive triumph.”

If Gold Derby’s predictions are true that “Sylvie’s Love” will win the Emmy for Best TV Movie, it would be a first for Amazon Prime Video. Previously the streamer contended once in this category for “King Lear” (2019), losing to Netflix’s “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch.” The new telefilm stars Tessa Thompson as Sylvie, a 1950s record store worker who has dreams of becoming a television producer. She soon falls in love with Robert (Nnamdi Asomugha) and they begin a years-long, on-again/off-again relationship.
Director/producer Eugene Ashe also wrote the film that originally had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. That’s where Amazon acquired distribution rights, eventually releasing in on December 23, just in time for the holidays. At the Critics Choice Awards, “Sylvie’s Love” was nominated for Best TV Movie and Thompson for Best Actress. It also won the Image Award for Ashe for Best Director.

You can bet Marvel will do whatever it takes to get Emmy nominations this year. If you understood that reference, then you’ll understand everything we talked about in this video. Ethan Hawke is a four-time Oscar nominee for “Training Day”, “Before Sunset”, “Before Midnight” and “Boyhood”, but he’s never been recognized at the Emmy Awards. Until now?
Not only does Hawke play famed abolitionist John Brown on Showtime’s “The Good Lord Bird,” but he’s also on the Emmy ballot for writing and producing the limited series. Paul Bettany (‘WandaVision’) has a stronger chance than you think to win the Emmy, say these Experts
Usually when you think of Marvel TV shows, you don’t automatically think of awards. But “WandaVision” could be the one to change all of that. This Disney Plus limited series broke the water cooler earlier this year for its genre-bending story about fan-fave “Avengers” Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany). Both actors delivered performances at the top of their games, with Bettany even getting major Emmy buzz for his dual roles as “Soul Vision” (the decent and honorable leading man) and “White Vision” (the emotionless and intimidating antagonist).
Currently 24 of Gold Derby’s Experts have made their Emmy predictions for Best Limited Series Actor, and Bettany comes in third place to win thanks to the support of these two: Joyce Eng (Gold Derby) and Kaitlin Thomas (Gold Derby). The other savvy prognosticators are split between Ethan Hawke (“The Good Lord Bird”), Hugh Grant (“The Undoing”) and Joel Edgerton...

Currently all 24 of Gold Derby’s Experts predict “The Crown” will win Best Drama Actress at the 2021 Emmys. However, when you look a bit closer you’ll see that there’s some dissension in the ranks in terms of which leading lady will wear the proverbial crown. A leading 19 of these savvy prognosticators pick Emma Corrin (she takes on the role of Princess Diana), while the other five go with Olivia Colman (she portrays Queen Elizabeth II). Which side do you take in the Corrin vs. Colman battle? There’s still time to make your Emmy predictions before the nominations are revealed July 13.

Kathryn Hahn played the witch that launched a thousand memes in “WandaVision,” and it looks like that performance could win her her first Emmy too. It’s early yet — the nominations won’t be announced until July — but as of this writing multiple Experts think Agatha is awards-bound.

While the majority of Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts are predicting a win for Eugene Levy (“Schitt’s Creek”) in Best Comedy Actor, this category is ripe for an upset. Of our 20 prognosticators from major media outlets, one goes rogue in predicting Ted Danson (“The Good Place”) will actually win. It wouldn’t be the first time the legendary TV actor prevailed for his show’s final season — after all, he did the exact same thing for another NBC comedy in 1993.

“The Amazing Race” holds the Emmy record for the most wins in Best Competition Program (formerly known as Reality-Competition Program), taking home a whopping 10 trophies through the years. Since CBS’s popular reality TV show didn’t air within the Emmy eligibility period, it won’t have a chance to increase its numbers quite yet. Just how massive is that “Amazing Race” record? In fact, a leading 19 of our 31 Emmy Experts predict a second consecutive victory for the “Mrs. Maisel” scene-stealer, compared to 10 who think “Schitt’s Creek” creator/writer/actor Dan Levy will prevail. The other two prognosticators throw their support at Sterling K. Brown (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”).
SEETony Shalhoub is in a ‘Marvelous’ position to squelch this 12-year Emmy drought
Shalhoub is already a four-time Emmy champ, having won three times in Best Comedy Actor for “Monk” and once in Best Comedy Supporting Actor for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (2019). However, Shalhoub is not unbeatable for this current role. The first time he was nominated for playing Abraham “Abe” Weissman in 2018, he lost to Henry Winkler (“Barry...

“Saturday Night Live” Season 45 may have been forced to shut down early due to the coronavirus pandemic, but that won’t stop Kate McKinnon from taking home her third career Emmy Award. Four of Gold Derby’s 31 Experts predict McKinnon will win Best Comedy Supporting Actress at the 2020 Emmys: Thelma Adams (Gold Derby), Lynette Rice (Ent. Weekly), Jazz Tangcay (Variety) and Ken Tucker (Yahoo). That’s good enough for second place on our odds chart, behind only Alex Borstein (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), someone who’s also looking to add a third trophy in this category.

Voting for the 2020 Emmy nominations ended on Monday, with 25,000 members of the Television Academy marking their ballots in dozens of categories. While the noms won’t be announced until July 28, our 31 Experts from major media outlets have already chimed in with their winner predictions. For Best Drama Series, they are split between no less than five shows: 26 predict a victory for HBO’s “Succession,” two choose Netflix’s “Ozark” and one apiece opt for Netflix’s “The Crown,” AMC’s “Better Call Saul” and FX’s “Pose.” Do You agree or disagree with our Experts’ Emmy predictions?

“Watchmen” finished airing last December, but it wasn’t until recently that actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II skyrocketed into the top six in our Emmy predictions for Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actor. Do you agree that he’s bound for a nomination? And could he even win?
Spoiler alert! While Abdul-Mateen is initially believed to be Cal, the unassuming husband of crusading police detective Angela Abar (Regina King), he is eventually revealed to be the omniscient and omnipotent being Doctor Manhattan, who has been in disguise for years — even disguised from himself. So the actor gets to play dual roles, which gives voters a chance to see his dramatic range, though he might be slightly disadvantaged by the fact that one of his personas is often shrouded in glowing blue visual effects.

We’re just about two and a half weeks away from finding out what’ll be nominated at the 2020 Emmy Awards, but our 30 Experts from major media outlets have already chimed in with their winner predictions. When it comes to Best Comedy Series, they are split between no less than five shows: 15 predict a victory for Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” 12 choose Pop’s “Schitt’s Creek” and one apiece opt for NBC’s “The Good Place,” Hulu’s “Ramy” and Netflix’s “Dead to Me.” Do You agree or disagree with our Experts’ Emmy predictions?

Even though Judith Light has been working in television for decades, she has yet to win a Primetime Emmy despite four career nominations: “Ugly Betty” (2007), “Transparent” (2016 & 2017) and “The Assassination of Gianni Versace” (2018). The actress does, however, have two Daytime Emmys on her mantel for “One Life to Live” (1980 & 1981). Light is back in the awards discussion this year thanks to her role as New York State Senator Dede Standish on Netflix’s “The Politician,” and now one of our 29 Emmy Experts — Lynette Rice (Ent. Weekly) — predicts she’ll finally win.

Last year the TV academy forced FX’s “American Horror Story” to submit in the drama categories for the first time, since the “Apocalypse” season contained continuing storylines and characters from both “Murder House” and “Coven.” Because of the switcheroo, “Ahs” scream queen Jessica Lange was able to nab an Emmy nomination in Best Drama Guest Actress — a category she wouldn’t have been eligible for had the show stayed as a limited series. (Lange lost to Cherry Jones for “The Handmaid’s Tale.”) At this year’s Emmys, the exact same thing could happen to Andrew Scott for his one-and-done role on Netflix’s “Black Mirror.”

Not many people correctly predicted Luke Kirby‘s come-from-behind Emmy victory last year for Best Comedy Guest Actor. In fact, this “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” scene-stealer was in fourth place on our 2019 odds chart, behind Peter MacNicol (“Veep”), John Mulaney (“Saturday Night Live”) and Adam Sandler (“Saturday Night Live”). This year our Emmy Experts don’t plan on making the same mistake again — he’s in the runner-up position to win his second Emmy Award for the Amazon comedy. Of course, the odds-on front-runner is still Eddie Murphy (“Saturday Night Live”).
