Get in touch to send in cinephile news and discoveriesNEWSLam SuetThis year's Asian Film Awards are most notable for giving beloved Hong Kong character actor (and Johnnie To axiom) Lam Suet the award for Best Supporting Actor (for Trivisa). We were also happy to see that Tsui Hark (still madly inventive with this year's Journey to the West: The Demons Strike Back) was given the Lifetime Achievement Award.Chinese actress Li Li-hua has died at the age of 92. While not very well known in the West—except perhaps in the obscure Frank Borzage film China Doll (1958)—Li's work for the Shaw Brothers studio and, later, Golden Harvest, minted many classics, including Li Han-hsiang's The Magnificent Concubine (1962), and Storm Over the Yangtse River (1969), as well as King Hu's The Fate of Lee Khan (1975).For those who aren't able to travel to the Locarno Film Festival but are able to...

We recently had the opportunity to interview Laroyce Hawkins, who stars on Chicago Pd as Detective Atwater, about the upcoming season.
He had plenty to say on all sorts of topics, including the highly anticipated season premiere, what's to come for his character, crossovers, and so much more!
Not only did he provide us insights into what's to come, but he gave us some of his own thoughts and hopes for the series as well. Check out what he had to say below!
TV Fanatic: What can you tell us about the premiere?
Laroyce Hawkins: I can tell you I think people are going to enjoy it. I think right at the end of the episode is when you truly appreciate it because of the way it twists. We know that Voight saved Lindsay's life back when she was like 15 years old, and he's the reason why she was...

We look back at the key films from the long career of the Hong Kong studio mogul credited with triggering the worldwide craze for kung fu
• Run Run Shaw, godfather of kung fu film-making, dies aged 106
Along with his brother Runme, Run Run Shaw set up shop in the south-east Asian film business, first experiencing success before the second world war by founding a chain of cinemas in Malaya. In 1957 the brothers moved their activities to Hong Kong, and they put themselves firmly on the map when their elaborate costume drama, The Magnificent Concubine, won a technical prize at the 1962 Cannes film festival, the first Chinese film to do so. It stars Li Li-hua as a senior emperor's concubine, whose position is threatened when a younger concubine appears on the scene. There's Li warbling a ditty in the clip above.
A decade later, along came The One-Armed Swordsman, which...

Directed by Todd Freeman
Runtime 4 minutes
Written and directed by Todd Freeman, M is for Marriage (formerly titled Love Sick) is a short film currently in the running for a spot in the upcoming anthology horror film ABCs of Death 2.
Starring Natalie Victoria, Jeffree Newman, and Michael Draper, the film tells the story of a couple attending marriage counselling. The counselor uses a very unusual technique—having his patients visually manifest their pain. The couple is separated for this, but things don't go well for this particular couple.
M is for Marriage is a unique short film that I found to be quite compelling. The acting is well done, especially by Natalie Victoria who expertly conveys the deep hurt and anger she feels toward her husband. It is simply but effectively shot and edited, and the Special Effects are amazing. I think the other...

It’s that time again… okay, it’s a little past that normal time, thanks to the Mix March Madness wrapup, but here are the preview materials for DC Comics releases for July 2012.
What’s on tap this month? More of the Before Watchmen books, with the debut of Ozymandias from Len Wein and Jae Lee, the conclusion of the Court of Owls storyline and crossover in all the Bat-books, and the debut of the done-in-one book, National Comics, featuring the New 52 Debut (coming right at you) of Eternity.
And in the white elephant of desire category, there’s the $300 statue showing the climactic scene from The Dark Knight Returns.
Once more, into the breach? Banzai!
As always, spoilers may lurk beyond this point.
Before Watchmen: Ozymandias #1
Written by Len Wein
Art and cover by Jae Lee

While prolific director Herman Yau has made a name for himself around the world for his grotesque and confrontational horror movies, as well as a string of hard-edged crime thrillers, he wouldn't be most people's first choice to helm a touching romantic drama. And yet with Love Lifting Yau attempts to do just that, albeit with a healthy dose of sports movie thrown in for good measure.Pang Brothers regular Elanne Kwong takes on the demanding yet rather unglamourous role of Li Li, a championship weightlifter who is forced to retire when diagnosed with diabetes. Taking odd jobs to make ends meet she soon falls in with new neighbour Yung (Chapman To), a recently divorced and bankrupted bar owner. Soon enough the couple marry and have...

You know the holiday season has officially begun when the tabs begin dishing up piping hot servings of outrage over the so-called War on Christmas. This week saw the battle lines move to a new front: Rockland County, New York, where a second-grade teacher at the George W. Miller Elementary School in Nanuet committed what some call an unforgivable act of Yuletide sacrilege.
