Lazareth is a new thriller that has enticed in an actor who is no stranger to the genre in Ashley Judd, and to mark the release of the film, we had the pleasure in speaking to her, alongside her younger co-star Asher Angel.
We discuss the themes of the film, and the empowering feminist undercurrent, as well as how it connects to the pandemic, while Judd speaks very candidly about offering advice and guidance to the younger actresses on set, something she goes on to tell she didn’t receive herself. We also speak to Angel about his role in the DC Universe in Shazam!, and he speaks about balancing his film with his music work, and why a certain Justin Timberlake remains an inspiration. Be sure to watch both interviews in their entirety below.

DC’s release slate has been at a standstill ever since James Gunn’s announcement about Dcu’s first live-action film, Superman. His pet project, Peacemaker suffers too under Gunn’s self-impositions as the series’ Season 2 remains held up at Max until Superman is officially released worldwide.

Asher Angel received praise for his breakout role in Shazam! as Billy Batson and, while Shazam! Fury of the Gods failed to live up to expectations, he was once again the highlight.
Many fans went so far as to suggest he should take over from Zachary Levi as the Dcu's Big Red Cheese, though we expect Shazam to be put on the shelf in the new Dcu after the sequel so badly underperformed last year.
That doesn't mean Angel's time playing a superhero is over, though. In fact, he recently posted a Gif of Nightwing on X which has sent speculation into overdrive about him potentially joining The Brave and the Bold as Dick Grayson. While he'd be a great fit for the role, many fans have pointed out, it's unlikely the actor would tease the role like this if he'd just been cast.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods was released last year to mixed reviews and we all know that it was one of the final Dceu movies. The first Shazam! film was relatively successful and was a refreshing take on the Dceu at the time, but the sequel failed to deliver, and with all the issues related to Black Adam and Johnson’s refusal to connect the two movies, which was a natural thing to do, the Shazam! series was doomed to fail, at least as part of the original Dceu. We do know that a third Shazam! movie was planned, but the idea was ultimately scrapped when the Dceu went through a revamp.

DC Studios has been in a bit of trouble as they have attempted to rescue the sinking ship of the superhero slates getting released. With James Gunn taking over as the co-ceo of the superhero brand with Peter Safran, Warner Brothers is expecting a ray of sunshine. But with the failed DC movies, the fate of several movies has been hazy, including Asher Angel’s Shazam 2.

Gunn’s tenure in DC has started, but the beginning of his new version of DC Universe is yet to roll out, which will officially begin with his upcoming movie Superman. Failure of the recent DC flops was a huge question mark on several heroes’ return— Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam, Ezra Miller’s The Flash, and Zachary Levi’s Shazam 2. 2023 was a rough year for superhero movies. Both Marvel Studios and Warner Bros.' Dceu struggled to deliver movies which resonated with fans and filmgoers, and Shazam! Fury of the Gods failed to take flight when it opened last March.
Reviews were split rather than outright negative, but the movie still only grossed $134 million worldwide. It came as a shock after the success of 2019's Shazam!, and the character's future is now uncertain with DC Studios set to reboot the Dcu beginning with 2025's Superman.
We were recently fortunate enough to speak with Billy Batson actor Asher Angel about his role in the edge-of-your-seat thriller, Lazareth. We'll bring you the full conversation with him, and co-star Ashley Judd, soon.
In the meantime, we have an excerpt from our conversation in which Angel addresses the Shazam! sequel's struggles, his interest in reprising the role, what was originally planned for the franchise,...

Grace Caroline Currey has joined the cast of “The Breed,” and is set to lead the film. Directed by brothers Nathan and Griff Furst, the film is an “unconventional reimagining of the Wes Craven cult classic.” The brothers will produce together through their company, Curmudgeon Films.
The film centers around Currey’s character Violet, “a rebel icon and badass on a mission to search for abandoned dogs on a remote island which leads to complete adrenaline-fueled terror.”
Currey most recently starred in Lionsgate’s adventure thriller, “Fall,” directed by Scott Mann. The film follows two daredevil climbers, Becky (Currey) and Hunter (Virginia Gardner), who decide to scale the B67 TV tower — an abandoned 2,000-foot communication tower that juts up in the middle of the California desert.

In addition to Judd, the cast includes Sarah Pidgeon, Katie Douglas, Edward Balaban, and Asher Angel. Asher Angel‘s career is quickly on the rise. The Jewish actor has been working in Tinseltown since the age of five. However, Angel’s career seems to be finally steering in a strong direction thanks to his time in his biggest role to date: Shazam! and Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Like most actors in Hollywood, the young star had to scratch and claw his way up through the system in order to get a decent opportunity. Though it seems as if his time as Billy Batson has come to an end (unless James Gunn announces a sequel to Shazam! Fury...

Wildfires are a far too common occurrence, destroying property and taking lives in the U.S. and abroad, and Peter Facinelli hopes his latest film On Fire will put a more personal spin on the disasters so viewers start thinking about how they could be mitigated.
“It’s meant to be a white knuckling kind of ride that gives you hope and, in the end, also celebrates the heroes that are putting their lives on the line all the time,” Facinelli tells The Hollywood Reporter, adding that he hopes the film raises awareness about the increasing frequency of deadly wildfires, like the one that devastated Lahaina in August. “October is Fire Prevention Month, and there are ways to protect your home, but these fires just keep happening and it’s time to think about what we could do about it.”

In November 2018, the seventh deadliest wildfire in US history ripped through California and destroyed the entire town of Paradise, along with numerous other homes. A combination of wind changes and unexpected behaviour on the part of the fire meant that evacuations happened only at the last minute and many people who had thought themselves safe abruptly faced danger. Given the location of this event, it embedded itself deep in the psyche of many in he state’s filmmaking community. Five years later, Peter Facinelli and Nick Lyon’s film attempts to capture something of the experience of those directly involved.

The film initially premiered at the 2023 Mammoth Film Festival earlier this year, and it's co-directed by Nick Lyon with the actor / director Peter Facinelli. This is a chilling premise because it's actually happening in real life to so many people - from Hawaii and Greece, and many many other places around the world. And yes it's due to climate change and negligence, and we need to do more. Based on real events, On Fire follows a family who lives in a trailer home in the woods when they are suddenly confronted by a wildfire. Survival becomes their main objective. The thunder is hitting HBO Max.
“Shazam! Fury of the Gods” is arriving on the streamer, which will soon be renamed to Max, on May 23. Although the DC Comics adaptation opened at No. 1 at the box office, it flew in lower than its predecessor, barely cracking a $30 million debut.
Starring Zachary Levi, the film sees Billy Batson (Levi and Asher Angel) and his foster siblings using their transformative powers to take on the Daughters of Atlas, who threaten to destroy the world. Rachel Zegler, Adam Brody, Lucy Liu and Helen Mirren round out the film’s cast, while David F. Sandberg returns as director.
In addition to a disappointing debut (particularly notable considering its hefty $125 million production budget), critical responses are also a step down from the praise that met the original.

It seems like only yesterday that Lucy Liu was landing on a Philadelphia baseball field on dragon-back to cause chaos, yet tomorrow "Shazam! Fury of the Gods" is already set to land on digital platforms. Warner Bros. has confirmed to /Film that, as ComicBook.com first reported, the "Shazam" sequel film is already set to drop via digital release on April 7, 2023.
This is an exceptionally quick turnaround time for a film that hit theaters just under three weeks ago, but then again, superhero film fans don't exactly seem to be willing to head to theaters to support the Zachary Levi-led movie. "Shazam! Fury of the Gods" saw a precipitous 67.8% drop between its first and second week of release, after underperforming during its opening weekend as well. Warner Bros' decision to quickly opt in to an at-home viewing option seems like a smart one, as DC fans who no longer consider...

Shazam! Fury of the Gods has been one of the most anticipated 2023 movies. The Shazam! sequel has finally hit theaters, and fans are eager to see what it has in store. The film features an all-star cast, including Meagan Good, who plays the role of Darla Dudley, one of Billy Batson’s foster siblings who gains the ability to transform into a superhero. In a recent interview, Good explained why being on Shazam! Fury of the Gods is a dream come true.

Shazam star Zachary Levi is seemingly carrying the torch for comedy in superhero movies. Most of the ongoing DC slate has some element of comedy, from The Suicide Squad to the lighthearted tone of The Flash. But with Marvel’s Ant-Man going for a more serious science fiction tone, Levi’s character is starting to look a little lonely.
That might be why the Chuck actor is trying to re-enlist a former DC actor for the new wave of films under director James Gunn. He thinks Ryan Reynolds should come back to the DC universe, playing the very character that got him ousted in the first place.

It's worth noting right away that there will likely be no "Shazam! 3." Not only has "Shazam! Fury of the Gods" been welcomed by unimpressive box office numbers, but James Gunn and Peter Safran, who were recently put in charge of all the movies and TV shows based on DC Comics, appear to be planning to wipe the slate clean. A few more films in the superhero continuity that began with "Man of Steel" in 2013 will play in theaters before this year is over, but there will likely be no follow-ups to them. Additionally, many of the current DC TV shows like "Doom Patrol" and "Titans" will also be taken off the roster. Gunn and Safran's mandate begins with cleanliness.
Speculating about what might go into a third "Shazam!" film will have to remain 100% academic. There is very little reason to believe that such a film will ever be made, or...

Henry Gayden and Chris Morgan clearly like working together. The day before Shazam! Fury of the Gods hit theaters, the co-writers couldn’t say enough good things about each other, tossing questions and praise back and forth on a mid-morning Zoom call with The Hollywood Reporter.
“I’m a huge fan of Henry’s writing,” said Morgan, who’s known for his work as a screenwriter on The Fast and the Furious franchise, about hopping onto the Shazam! sequel with Gayden. “He has this kind of a superpower of being able to tap into a teen voice that I just have no access to…I just kind of am in awe of that.”
Gayden felt just as strongly about Morgan, and even wrote a Fast and Furious joke into into the script as a tribute.

When James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios, the duo didn’t mince words: this was a brand “in chaos.” Their mandate: as Safran explained in late January, “to build an extraordinary standalone studio with the best IP and stories in the world.” But while the pair have already laid out their plans to do just that over the coming years, they also arrived in their new gig with existing material — including five films, all part of that “chaos” — that was primed, ready to go, and dated.
One of those films: David F. Sandberg’s “Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” which opened last week to a limp $30 million opening weekend. As IndieWire’s own Tom Brueggemann noted in his weekly box office wrap, that’s more than 40 percent down from the initial DC Comics film in 2019 (with ticket prices at least 15 percent lower). In the super-sequel “Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” mild-mannered teen Billy Batson learns the importance of togetherness as he and his team of hero pals save Philadelphia from a triumvirate of titanettes. Paired for the first time, screenwriters Chris Morgan and Henry Gayden got their own lesson in the fine art of teamwork as they joined forces for a lighter spin on the capes-and-tights picture.

The superhero Shazam, formerly known by his beloved golden age name, Captain Marvel, became a fan favorite among readers right from the 40s, partially due to the charm the character brought and partially due to his unique origin. Although creators C.C. Beck and Bill Parker conceptualized the World’s Mightiest Mortal in 1940 with the recently debuted Man of Steel in mind, the departure from conventional superhero origins by making a teenager magically transformed into the all-powerful hero added distinctiveness. Later, as Captain Marvel, aka young Billy Batson, merrily shared his powers among hapless souls, the innovativeness kept adding on. Freddy Freeman and Mary Bromfield were the two major characters with whom the Captain shared his powers. The trio was known as Marvel Family and had their own titles, which became immensely popular.

DC and New Line Cinema’s Shazam! Fury of the Gods is a superhero pic scorned.
The movie opened to a dismal $30.5 million domestically from 4,071 theaters, well behind the $53.5 million domestic opening of the first Shazam! in 2019, not adjusted for inflation.
That’s one of the worst starts for a major Hollywood superhero film, as well as one of the worst for a title in the DC Cinematic Universe, including those released during the pandemic. Fury of the Gods cost at least $110 million to produce before marketing.
The news was just as bad overseas, where Fury of the Gods opened to just $35 million from 78 markets — including bombing in China with $4.4 million — for a worldwide start of $65.5 million.
In North America, prerelease tracking had suggested Shazam! Fury of the Gods would open to at least $35 million this weekend. Others believed it had a shot at $40 million.

There's no denying that Dame Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu make for better supervillains than a talking worm, but the fact remains: the first "Shazam" movie promised us Mister Mind. Or did it? If you sat through to the end of the sequel "Shazam! “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” is thundering to a No. 1 opening at the box office, though the DC Comics adaptation is expected to fly in lower than its predecessor.
“Fury of the Gods” grossed $11.7 million in opening day ticket sales, a figure that includes $3.4 million in Thursday previews. That’s almost half of the $20.3 million that the 2019 original earned in its first day of release, on its way to a $53 million bow. “Fury of the Gods” carries a production budget of $125 million, which is $25 million higher than its predecessor’s.
Opening in 4,071 theaters, the superhero sequel will likely struggle to reach a $30 million debut. “Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” the sequel to the better-than-it-had-any-right-to-be “Shazam!” (from 2019) is here. It once again stars Zachary Levi as the adult superhero version of pint-sized Billy Batson (Asher Angel), whose powers were bestowed upon him by a dying wizard.. This time around, Shazam and his super-powered family are going up against villainous gods played by Helen Mirren, Lucy Lui and Rachel Zegler, in her first big movie role since “West Side Story.”
But Shazam is also facing something far more challenging than wooden dragons and wrathful gods – he’s staring down the barrel of an uncertain future for DC-related properties. Amidst a failed spinoff, a highly publicized regime change at Warner Bros. Discovery and a nearly complete reset of everything that has come before it in the DC Universe, “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” sits precipitously on the edge of a very deep ravine.

If that final end-credits scene of Shazam! Fury of the Gods looked familiar, it was supposed to.
After a long battle against the daughters of Atlas — Hespera (Helen Mirren), Kalypso (Lucy Liu) and Anthea (Rachel Zegler)— the DC sequel ends with Billy Batson (Asher Angel/Zachary Levi) and the Shazam! family safely back together, rebuilding their home after it was destroyed in the final fight. They all have their powers restored, and Billy finally learns his true superhero name — it’s Shazam, obviously. And once credits roll on what is potentially Levi’s last outing as the superhero, there are two end-credits sequences.
The final end-credits scene calls back to the post-credit promises of the first film, which featured Doctor Sivana (Mark Strong) conspiring for revenge in his jail cell with an unlikely visitor — Mister Mind, a supervillain worm with a robotic voice who’s a major Shazam!

Well, here’s a pickle. Generally, when we write about the post-credits scenes that wind down big blockbusters, the intention is to a) explain them in their current context and b) posit how they might impact their franchises going forward. Typically, that’s an easy enough ask, but given the current state of the DC Universe, attempting to explain how the pair of post-credits scenes in David F. Sandberg’s “Shazam! Before James Gunn and Peter Safran officially relaunch the DC Universe with the 2025 release of Gunn’s own “Superman: Legacy,” a handful of DC films are still primed for release. Those films, including “Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” were designed as part of previous franchise...
