Bad Cinderella is taking its final bow.
The Andrew Lloyd Webber production announced on Wednesday that it will be closing at the Imperial Theatre on June 4, after opening in March.
The musical announced its closure after it failed to garner any Tony Award nominations, which were announced May 2. Bob Fosse’s Dancin‘, which also did not receive any nods, announced its closure that day.
Bad Cinderella had also seen weeks of declining grosses and attendance. In the most recent week of grosses, which ended May 7, the musical played to 53 percent capacity and grossed $326,303, which is below the running costs of most musicals.
As it stands, after Bad Cinderella plays its final performance, Lloyd Webber will not have a musical on Broadway for the first time in decades. He had been long represented by The Phantom of the Opera, which played its final performance on April 16, as well as other musicals such as Cats,...

Bad Cinderella, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s updated musical re-telling of the classic fairy tale, will play its final Broadway performance on Sunday, June 4.
The musical, which features lyrics by David Zippel and book by Emerald Fennell, has been struggling at the box office after critical drubbings. The production received no Tony Award nominations last week – the musical will close one week before the scheduled Tony ceremony.
Box office figures for the show took a big hit after the Tony nomination shut-out, tumbling by $188,678 from the previous week to land at a small $326,303. Even with an average ticket price at a barely-there $54.33, the musical could fill only 54% of seats at the Imperial Theatre.
When it closes, Bad Cinderella will have played 33 preview performances and 85 regular performances at Broadway’s Imperial Theatre.

Your first thought after seeing Bad Cinderella, the latest musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber, is, well, she isn’t that bad. For better and worse.
The musical, energetically directed by Laurence Connor, opens on Broadway tonight with quite a reputation: We’ve heard it was lambasted by critics in London (it wasn’t). That Andrew Lloyd Webber himself trashed it (he didn’t).
The truth: Bad Cinderella, known as plain old Cinderella during an abbreviated London run that had the dreadful timing to coincide with the Covid pandemic (that was Lloyd Webber’s point when he lamented opening the show then), is a musical that upends and modernizes the age-old tale with an irreverent, knowing tone meant to smirk away the old lessons and replace them with new ones – with morals, as in the moral of the story, that more closely aligned with today’s thinking.

The musical explores the classic fairytale through the lens of beauty standards, with a book written by Emerald Fennell, the Oscar Award-winning screenwriter of Promising Young Woman.
Linedy Genao, who has previously appeared on Broadway in Dear Evan Hansen, will play the title role.
Lloyd Webber appeared in front of the Imperial Theatre Monday morning to introduce Genao. He praised her as his leading lady, while joking that the musical opens the day after his 75th birthday, “so I’m intrigued to see what kind of birthday present I get.”

Exclusive: Laurence Connor, the British director of troubled West End musical Cinderella, has told friends of his “anger” at how the closure announcement of his show was handled by Andrew Lloyd Webber and his executives.
Connor had not been told his show would be closing. He’d been on a professional assignment in Sydney and was en route to London early Sunday, local Sydney time. At the stopover in Dubai, Connor listened to a voicemail from Lloyd Webber telling him that Cinderella would be closing.
By the time Connor reached the UK on Sunday night, he was informed by friends that the news already was out there. “He reacted furiously,” a source told Deadline today. “He cast all of that company and has been with them through rehearsals and through getting the show up on the stage. We all understand that shows have to open and then at some point they have to close,...

Andrew Lloyd Webber has announced the indefinite closure of his new West End musical Cinderella a day before its official opening due to what the composer angrily called “the blunt instrument that is the Government’s isolation guidance” regarding Covid-19.
In a tweet Monday morning, Webber said the musical, which began performances just last month at the Gillian Lynne Theatre, will not resume today as planned (performances were halted Saturday after an actor tested positive for Covid). The $8.2 million musical was set to officially open July 20.
In his statement, Webber said that the cast member (“who has a cameo role in the show”) tested positive on Saturday, prompting producers to cancel two weekend performances and test the rest of the company. Webber said that, aside from the one performer, the tests were negative, as were subsequent tests conducted today.

No matter how frosty the West’s relations with Russia, is there really any reason to roll “Chess” out of cold storage? For all the bangers of its retro score, Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus’ eighties musical, based on a brainwave by lyricist Tim Rice, simply doesn’t stack up. Never has, never will – and Laurence Connor’s grandiose semi-staged revival for English National Opera fares no better at coaxing a coherent, satisfying evening out of a canny concept than any of its predecessors.
An attempt to encapsulate the testy stalemate of the entire Cold War in a game between rivalgrandmasters, “Chess” has a checkered history. A turbulent but respectable West End run was followed, 30 years ago, by a drastically revised Broadway premiere that lasted little longer than the Cuban missile crisis. It’s been tinkered and toyed with ever since, but the fact that original bookwriter Richard Nelson is...

Most of the young cast of the U.K.’s School of Rock — The Musical weren’t alive when the Spice Girls released their smash hit, “Wannabe,” in 1996. But that didn’t stop them from jamming out to the hit when former Spice Girl Melanie Chisholm a.k.a. Mel C joined them on stage Thursday night at the West End’s New London Theatre for a surprise curtain-call performance.
The visit came just weeks after her former bandmate Mel B unexpectedly burst into a snippet from the hit song during her final performance as Roxie Hart in Broadway’s Chicago.

Cuba-u.S. detente has nothing on the hotly competitive Shubert and Nederlander organizations. Broadway’s two biggest landlords are suddenly looking like Bff’s as co-producers on hoped-for blockbuster shows (not for the first time, it should be noted; in 1981 they famously co-produced The Life And Adventures Of Nicholas Nickleby, among others. But still…).
They’re teaming with Lloyd Webber’s Really Useful Group and the Warner Music Group for the world premier of a new musical based on the 2003 Jack Black career-making comedy from Paramount. Currently, Shubert and Nederlander are co-producing the Sro Bradley Cooper-starring revival of The Elephant Man (at the Shubert-owned Booth Theatre).
Plans call for School Of Rock to cold-open on Broadway — no out-of-town tryout – at the Shuberts’ Winter Garden Theatre (following the limited run of the Royal Shakespeare Company production of Wolf Hall, Parts 1 & 2, which begins a 15-week stand on March 20). Previews are to begin Monday,...

Theatre Review: ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ Returns With Ingénue Julia Udine, Enigmatic Cooper Grodin
Chicago – The Phantom in one word? An enigma. But he’s so much more. He’s lonely, desperately in love, a musical genius, misunderstood, vengeful, afraid and angry at a world that was so cruel to him. His shining beacon out of the darkness is his music – and falling for Christine. But The Phantom has to try to force her to feel the same way. He doesn’t want your pity. He just wants to be musical, loved and understood.
Play Rating: 4.5/5.0
She partially loves him, but their love is the epitome of complicated. Instead, Raoul (played by Chicago native Ben Jacoby) is the guy she’s supposed to marry and take home to mommy. The Phantom – in a bit of a “Beauty and the Beast”-like story – falls victim to his biggest downfall: choosing to become the monster the world has been to him instead of embracing forgiveness. He...

There's nothing like a huge, Oscar-winning film to get a famous musical back on people's minds. "Les Miserables" is returning to Broadway for the first time in 11 years starting in March 2014.
The return will feature a revised production of the hit play, although it is not yet clear what changes might be made to the original, Tony-winning production. When it first arrived in New York City in 1990, "Les Miserables" played for a successful 13 years, only leaving its home at the Imperial Theatre in 2003.
"This magnificent theater has the perfect blend of scale and intimacy for a story like 'Les Miserables,' and I can't wait to put together a brilliant company to bring this great musical to new generations of Broadway audiences," the show's producer, Cameron Mackintosh, said in a statement.
Created by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg, "Les Miserables" opened in London's West End in 1985. It is still...
