In theory, Netflix’s Dead Boy Detectives should be a feast for the misery wraiths, faceless creatures who feed on pain and suffering. The ghostly protagonists, Edwin (George Rexstrew) and Charles (Jayden Revri), are both teenagers bullied to death at the same British boarding school seven decades apart. They spend their time finding closure for other lost souls, like a pair of high schoolers cut down in their prime or a family slaughtered by an abusive patriarch. And they’re constantly on the run from the agents of Death, who would condemn Edwin to Hell on a technicality.
Yet the duo only ever encounter one such monster over the eight-episode first season, and perhaps that’s because despite its gloomy-sounding premise, Dead Boy Detectives is the furthest thing from dour. Dark, sure; bittersweet, sometimes. But it’s never less than entertaining, thanks to an appealingly quirky lead cast and a cheeky sense of humor.

With Deadpool & Wolverine on the horizon, it’s time to try and figure out the overly-convoluted nature of Fox’s X-Men franchise.

Brie Larson has been playing video games for as long as she can remember.
The actress and Nintendo aficionado was on hand in New York City last week to discuss the video game company’s newest Princess Peach-focused game, Princess Peach: Showtime!
The game sees the heroine fight villainess Grape as she tries to take over a theater and make every play end tragically. In order to save the day, Peach must enter each play to change the endings back, transforming into different versions of herself along the way, including a pastry chef, ninja, cowgirl, swordfighter, mermaid and ice skater.
“It’s great to join her in her journey,” Larson tells The Hollywood Reporter of the game. “I’ve just loved her my whole life, so to see her have this stand-alone game and not just that but to have all these different facets and different characters and her own gameplay is just a thrill.

When Aaron Horvath started working on “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” he and his fellow director, Michael Jelenic, knew they wanted to avoid the mistakes that had plagued so many video game-based movies in the past. They wanted to make this movie a cinematic expression of a gameplay experience. “We knew that people coming into this movie love Super Mario as a character, but they also love Super Mario as an avatar,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent chat as part of our Meet the Experts: Film Animation panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). The two wanted to encapsulate the visceral emotions that players experience when playing the game. “For us, it was the challenge of blending the emotional experience of playing a game with the emotional experience of watching a movie. That sort of core approach informed us all throughout.”

In the world of movies and TV shows, there are countless adaptations that have been made from popular novels and biographical works. But these forms of entertainment have also been inspired by and adapted from some of the biggest video games, which don't get nearly as much attention as they should. In 2023, HBO's acclaimed series "The Last of Us," based on the Sony action-adventure game franchise of the same name, broke viewership records and became the most-watched show in the history of the streaming platform in Europe and Latin America, per the Associated Press.
Along with television series, video-game-to-movie adaptations have also grown in popularity among audiences, with the star-studded "The Super Mario Bros." movie, adapted from the beloved game franchise by Nintendo, being the second-highest grossing film of 2023 so far, as reported by Insider. The animated highlights of 2023 thus far: Illumination/Universal’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” ($1.36 billion globally, $574.9 million domestically) and Sony’s “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” ($689 million globally, $381 million domestically) were massive box office hits, proving that there is a hungry audience clamoring to see animation in theaters again.
However, Pixar/Disney’s “Elemental” and DreamWorks/Universal’s “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken” were major box office flops: Pixar’s immigrant story about the elements trying to co-exist only mustered $154.4 million domestically (placing 20th on the studio’s list of features). However, it grabbed $490 million worldwide and subsequently became Disney+’s most-viewed movie premiere of the year. Meanwhile, DreamWorks’ coming-of-age Kraken comedy had the worst domestic showing in the studio’s history (with $15.7 million). This signaled that original animated content still has theatrical hurdles to overcome compared to franchises.

Chris Pratt and Charlie Day voice moustachioed plumbers Mario and Luigi in this animated adaptation of one of the most popular video games of all time. Jack Black brought his piano ballad “Peaches” from The Super Mario Bros. Movie to the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on Sunday. During the surprise performance at The Game Awards 10–Year Concert, one-half of Tenacious D was accompanied by the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, conducted by Lorne Balfe. Watch it below.
After entering from stage right, Black — whose character Bowser dedicates the song to Princess Peach (voiced by Anya Taylor-Joy) in the record-breaking movie — let loose an especially schmaltzy, over-the-top rendition of his first solo hit while rocking the same green suit and red hairpiece from the music video. Meanwhile, footage of Peach from the film played on the giant screen hanging over the stage.
Following its release in April, “Peaches” peaked at No. 56 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent a total of five weeks on the chart. Its music video, directed by Lyrical Lemonade’s Cole Bennett, has racked up 45 million YouTube views to date.

Anya Taylor-Joy, who portrayed Princess Peach in the recently released The Super Mario Bros. Movie, arrived on the red carpet wearing a pink racing suit made by Dior. The suit resembled the character’s racing costume, complete with gloves, a belt and boots. Taylor-Joy has been a Dior brand ambassador since 2021, along with actress Nina Dobrev and Blackpink’s Jisoo.
The actress was filming the Furiosa prequel film with director George Miller just before recording voiceover for Peach – both characters ride motorcycles.

Taylor-Joy said that she only wanted to play the princess if the character had her own agency and acted as a leader. She continued, recalling that she got emotional seeing the film when she thought of the kids who were going to see this version of a princess.
The actress also features as a younger version of Charlize Theron‘s character, Furiosa, from the 2015 film Mad Max: Fury Road.

Is “Peaches” from “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” one of the first Oscars original song contenders of the year?
The ultimate power ballad, sung by Jack Black as the evil Bowser, will be eligible to submit for best original song consideration at the Oscars, Universal has confirmed to Variety.
“Peaches” is all about Bowser’s unrequited love. And the subject of his adoration? Princess Peach (voiced by Anya Taylor Joy), who is the ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom. The song is co-written by Black, the film’s directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, as well as Eric Osmond and John Spiker.
In the movie, Bowser is sitting at his piano belting out the ballad. He sings, “Peach, you’re so cool And with my star we’re gonna rule. Peach, understand, I’m gonna love you ’til the very end. Princess Peach, at the end of the line, I’ll make you mine.

Nintendo brought Mario to the big screen back in 1993 with Super Mario Bros. This film starred Bob Hoskins as the titular Mario and John Leguizamo as Luigi. The film did not do too well. It became the go-to reference for a bad adaptation of video games to live-action films.
Fans hoped for a new adaptation for decades, but Nintendo was hesitant to pull the trigger. They finally teamed up with the animation studio Illumination Entertainment who brought us such films as Despicable Me, Minions, and the latest version of The Grinch. The company packed this new film full of Super Mario Easter Eggs and references. What did you end up missing?

Look out Justin Bieber, your hit single might have a new rival.
Jack Black has brought his comedic energy and timing to the starring role of a music video set to Bowser’s song “Peaches” from the hit “Super Mario Bros.” film.
The “Peaches” music video directed by Cole Bennett, watches Black climb through a hole in what looks like a mushroom or a turtle shell to tickle the ivories on a pink piano and belt out the ballad. A framed photo of Princess Peach sits atop the piano next to a bowl of — you guessed it — peaches, the fruit. Black wears an emerald green suit, a headpiece reminiscent of Bowser’s mane as well as gold eye makeup.

Surprise! The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which celebrates the long history of the most popular Nintendo character to ever appear on consoles, is jam-packed with tons of easter eggs, callbacks, and references to Mario’s gaming legacy. But it’s not just the video games themselves the movie turns to for inspiration. You’ll also find references to a certain 1993 movie as well as the animated series and comics sprinkled throughout the film. And there are plenty of even more obscure references, too.
In fact, there are so many easter eggs, we’re still finding more days after the movie’s release. Here are the very best callbacks to the Mario Bros. and Nintendo history that’s we’ve spotter so far:

Jack Black has gone above and beyond when it comes to promoting The Super Mario Bros Movie, and that includes starring in Peaches, a music video which finds the actor dressed up as Bowser while proclaiming his love for Princess Peach. You can check out the Peaches music video below and find yourself humming it for the rest of the day.
As you would expect, Jack Black gives his all for Peaches, which he actually helped develop for the movie. “Bowser plays an incredible piano ballad that extols his love for Princess Peach,” Super Mario Bros Movie co-director Aaron Horvath explained in the press notes. “As we were trying to get the point across of Bowser’s feelings for Peach, it seemed more fun, funny and sweet if we had him sing a song about it. Aaron Horvath's and Michael Jelenic's "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" contains multiple, perhaps-obvious, pop music cues that accent the film's many action sequences. Early in the film, when Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) have to traverse a dangerous Brooklyn street on the way to a much-needed plumbing job, The Beastie Boys' 1987 hit "No Sleep Till Brooklyn," from their album "Licensed to Ill" plays on the soundtrack. The line "Our manager's crazy, he always smokes dust" is tactfully omitted. Later in the film, when Mario, Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), and Toad (Keegan-Michael Key) have to build and drive their own high-octane go-karts, the opening rock strains of AC/DC's 1990 song "Thunderstruck," punctuates the construction.
Both of these music cues have some thematic logic. The more baffling needle drop is the placement of A-ha's 1985 chart-topper "Take on Me,...

Pop quiz, film lovers: What was the first feature-length movie based on a video game?
Conventional wisdom tells you that the answer is 1993's "Super Mario Bros.", a live-action, extremely loose (and very underrated) adaptation of the beloved Nintendo video game series about a pair of plumbers who travel to another world and rescue a princess from an evil reptile man. But conventional wisdom isn't necessarily the same thing as actual wisdom, because the real answer is more complicated.
The first feature-length film adapted from a video game was actually a tie between the anime films "Running Boy: Star Soldier's Secret" and "Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach!" Both movies came out on July 20, 1986, and both films have lapsed into near total obscurity, thanks to the fact that they were barely released in the first place. It doesn't help that they have never been officially translated into English.

It's always been unclear as to how Donkey Kong fits into the world of Mario. Technically, the two characters made their debut together in the same game and they've made numerous crossover appearances since then, but they also seem to exist in independent corners of their separate franchises. "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," however, introduces Donkey Kong as a piece of the greater Mario universe, tidying up a confusing piece of Mario lore for the creator of both video game icons, Shigeru Miyamoto.
The "Donkey Kong" arcade game, released in 1981, pitted Mario against the antagonistic Dk, though the former didn't have a full identity yet and was called "Jumpman." Both moved on to become the main heroes of their own respective series as Miyamoto directly oversaw development of the Mario games and British studio Rare handled the "Donkey Kong Country" series. Neither character appeared in each other's flagship titles, but...

This article contains minor spoilers for "The Super Mario Bros. Movie."For decades, I've played Nintendo games. They weren't the only ones I enjoyed, of course. I've spent more hours than I like to calculate on darker games like "Ghosts of Tsushima," "Assassin's Creed: Odyssey" and "Valhalla." They're a blast, and they let me indulge in my history geek side. However, these aren't games I play to forget the world for a bit. They're very much rooted in the world, full of complex emotions and situations, moral questions about the decisions you make, and full of a lot of dismembering and brutal death.
When I play a Nintendo game, specifically one set around Mario, Donkey Kong, or any of the denizens of the Mushroom Kingdom, I'm not playing it to go deep into a world gone by or murder a whole lot of enemy fighters. I'm playing it to relax.

"The Super Mario Bros. Movie" is proving itself to be a crossover hit between Nintendo fans young and old alike. This is yet another modernized feather in the cap for video games-turned-movies. With fun blockbusters like "Mortal Kombat," the "Sonic the Hedgehog" franchise films, and even a new "Street Fighter" movie in the works, the big screen is prepping itself to be quite the playground for nostalgic gamers.
The main cast includes the most familiar of the bunch: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Donkey Kong, and Bowser. That said, this flick is also filled to the brim with fun references, deep cuts, and interesting character cameos. While some of these appearances are of the blink-and-you'll-miss-it variety, other appearances of these minor icons do play more involved roles. With so many cameos from so many corners of the Mario canon, one must wonder, which distinctive additions are the coolest?...

"The Super Mario Bros. Movie" presented a rare opportunity for Nintendo, who usually keeps storytelling a low priority, to reacquaint us with the "Super Mario" characters we've grown up with and know very little about. That's why it's unfortunate that the animated film mostly maintains a break-neck speed throughout its 90-min runtime, explaining the bare minimum about the lore and the mechanics of this universe, much like the games themselves. However, if you pay attention and look in the right places, you'll find quite a significant amount of retcons and modifications to these characters' origin stories.
Surprisingly, the animated film opens not in the colorful and playful Mushroom Kingdom, but in an alternate reality version of Brooklyn, New York, where the titular brothers (played by Chris Pratt and Charlie Day) are pursuing a career as aspiring plumbers. After the box-office disaster that was 1993's ambitious and perhaps misunderstood "Super Mario Bros.", Nintendo has been especially protective over the brand integrity of the "Super Mario" franchise. Three decades later, the video game adaptation has become a bankable genre, especially with the success of Paramount's "Sonic the Hedgehog" live-action movies as well as this year's "The Last of Us" TV series on HBO. Now, it's Nintendo's time to shine again, so it has teamed up with Universal Pictures and animation house Illumination (known for the "Despicable Me" franchise) to bring Mario back to the big-screen in a way that is Shigeru Miyamoto-approved.
For better or worse, "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" is extremely dedicated to faithfully recreating every minutiae of the video games, resulting in what feels like a safe but entertaining theme park ride. As an origin story for the franchise, the plot is ultimately as...

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” takes the beloved Nintendo game characters and brings them to the silver screen with big hoorahs and many nods to the games themselves. A massive Hollywood cast and the production house of the “Despicable Me” movies bring to us a cheerful and light animated film that is rather short but absolutely enjoyable. With its adorable characters, two post-credit scenes, and massive fanbase of the game, there are definitely chances of a follow-up film in the near future.

In Aaron Horvath's and Michael Jelenic's new animated film "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," the title brothers (Chris Pratt and Charlie Day) find themselves whisked away from modern-day Brooklyn into a fantasy world called the Mushroom Kingdom. Said Kingdom is overseen by the benevolent-yet-heroic Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), an interdimensional monarch who cares deeply for the many innocent, mushroom-shaped citizens who live in her charge. She is capable at parkour, a skilled motorcyclist, and an experienced diplomat; over the course of the film, she treks to a neighboring kingdom to request military aid. She has no parents present, so it's a little baffling as to why she is called a princess and not a queen.
In most of the original Super Mario Bros. video games, the Princess was merely a damsel in distress. An evil, fire-breathing dragon named Bowser would kidnap her and keep her in a terrifying distant castle surrounded by lava.

The box office haul for The Super Mario Bros. Movie is projected to be $127.5 million over its five-day opening, throwing a blue shell at previous estimates, which put it between $85-$90 million. Breaking it down, Wednesday–its official opening day–was looking at $26 million alone, while the three-day total is shaping up to be just over $86 million.
These box office numbers would make The Super Mario Bros. Movie the second-best five-day opening for Illumination, following 2013’s Despicable Me 2. The conceit of "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" is that Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) are humans from Earth who, thanks to a rogue pipe, are sucked into the alternate dimension of the Mushroom Kingdom. Said realm is populated by curious mushroom-shaped people, talking apes, sentient penguins, and an evil fire-breathing Koopa who seeks a wife. There also appears to be another human living there in the form of Princess Peach, the ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom, although it's implied that she may be from a tertiary dimension altogether.
The Mario Bros. don't just come from Earth, but from Brooklyn specifically, and are of Italian descent. That means their local neighborhood is replete with recognizable Earth items. Although, seeing as "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" is based on a Nintendo game from the 1980s, all the Mario Bros.' Earth ephemera are based directly on 1980s Nintendo games.

As I mentioned in last week’s review of the big D&d flick (which topped the box office charts), the 2023 Spring season of game and toy based-movies has finally reached its biggest destination, or at least until Mattel’s “power couple” arrives. And much like last week’s trio of releases, it’s a nostalgic ‘deep dive”, going back over 40 years. Mind you this duo and their giant video game franchise hit the big screen 30 years, in live-action, and is now considered a loopy bit of campy fun. Ah, but there’s no more glued-on phony facial hair in this one because it’s all rendered in lush computer-generated animation by one of the more successful not-Pixar studios of the past couple of decades.

Video game power-ups are a familiar enough concept to a mass media-consuming public that Aaron Horvath's and Michael Jelenic's new film "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" doesn't bother to explain it for a second. If you consume a power-up, you're granted temporary superpowers. In terms of real-world physics, power-ups make about as much sense as, say, trapping a monster inside of a spit bubble, slamming them against the wall, and watching them magically transform into fruit (the premise of Taito's 1986 video game "Bubble Bobble"). But video games have been dictating their own surreal inner logic for decades, and audiences will readily accept any scenario.
In "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," the only primer that audiences are given regarding power-ups is when Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) explains to Mario (Chris Pratt) that floating metal boxes, festooned with question marks, contain power-ups that can be freed by punching them.

Coming from Universal and Illumination, The Super Mario Bros. Movie seems likely to spin off another popular franchise for the two studios, who already have the Despicable Me, Minions and Sing series going strong. Fans of the game will appreciate all the easter eggs,...

Widely considered to be one of the greatest video game franchises ever, Super Mario Bros. is an iconic, generation-spanning success that has taken on many iterations to always keep up with the times. One area in which it failed miserably was the 1993 live-action film version that starred Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo as Mario and Luigi, Brooklyn-based plumbers who go on a fantastical adventure. It was a critical and commercial flop, though it managed to find some bit of a cult following in the ensuing decades.
Movie-wise, though, The Super Mario Bros. Movie — the new animated cinematic collaboration between Nintendo and Illumination is a winner for families, the perfect format for the big screen, and one faithful enough not to turn off legions of fans, old and young alike. Animation is the right way to go, and directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, together with writer Matthew Fogel turn it into a charmer,...

‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ Review: Kid-Friendly Video Game Adaptation Pulls Out All the Power-Ups
Nintendo has always stood out as an oasis of untapped potential for an entertainment industry that’s determined to wring every drop of content out of every other preexisting brand. The Super Mario games have produced some of the most beloved characters in pop culture history, and the iconography of warp pipes, mushrooms, go-karts, and carnivorous plants is instantly recognizable. It’s the kind of pre-packaged movie franchise that Bob Iger probably salivated over during his mid-2000s IP shopping spree.
When you really think about it, the only remarkable thing about “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is that it took somebody this long to make it.
For years, the elephant in the room was the horrendous “Super Mario Bros.” from 1993. That monstrosity, which infamously reimagined Mario and Luigi as live-action New York plumbers played by Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo, reportedly scared Nintendo executives out of the movie business for a quarter century.

In 1993, the live-action adaptation of Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros was so hideously chaotic that it led the games giant to largely shun the film industry until 2019’s Detective Pikachu. Instead of a moustachioed, hyperactive Italian plumber hopping across platforms and down pipes, we were presented with a depressive Bob Hoskins trapped in what looked like the rotting set of a Broadway musical production of Blade Runner. At least you couldn’t call it predictable, though. The Super Mario Bros Movie, an animated rendition of the game courtesy of Illumination (aka the Minion people), is nothing more and nothing less than what you’d expect from a Mario film.
Its comfortable mediocrity is no better captured than in its choice to cast Chris Pratt – the current face of generic, easy-to-market heroism – in the starring role. Pratt, it should be said, is perfectly capable of the sort of outsized performance Mario needed,...

It’s strange to think of Mario as an underdog. Although he’s been depicted as vaguely blue-collar since his first appearance over 40 years ago, Nintendo’s mascot has always been decidedly super. And despite having had more professions than Johnny Sins, his most notable role is also his simplest: he’s a hero. Which is why the best decision made by the makers of The Super Mario Bros. Movie is to stomp that. This Mario is a loser.

For some people, perhaps, it will be a point in the win column that "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" is exactly what it looks like, and nothing more. The long-awaited adaptation of the massively popular worldwide video-game franchise, courtesy of Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment, is a rare case of the marketing lining up perfectly with the finished product. That makes sense, too, considering how much of the success of "Super Mario Bros." as a video game series is as much about how the games are advertised as it is about the actual games themselves. "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" brings together the many recognizable characters of the franchise, the musical flourishes, the colorful design, and even some replication of familiar gameplay, into a brisk 90-minute package that is as critic-proof as it is largely uninspiring.
