"The legend is true," Tom Hanks writes in the new issue of Rolling Stone. "In 1978, word came from the set of TV's Happy Days. That week, Fonzie's ultracool was threatened by a stranger from another world. The guy playing the alien was hilarious."
The new issue of Rolling Stone (on stands Friday) is devoted to the triumphant life and painful final days of a comedic genius: Robin Williams, who died after hanging himself in his California home on August 11th at the age of 63. In honor of Philip Seymour Hoffman's final film, A Most Wanted Man, hitting theaters today, we are reprinting David Browne's cover story on the actor's final days from our February 27th issue.
Slouched in the front row of the labyrinth Theater Company's performance space in New York's West Village last May, Philip Seymour Hoffman was his typical focused, superdisciplined self. In the intimate 90-seat theater, Hoffman – always dressed in one or another of his seemingly interchangeable baggy pants and sweaters – was relentlessly pushing the cast and crew of the play he was directing,...

At the beginning of this month, Philip Seymour Hoffman had two films in the can — Anton Corbijn's thriller A Man Wanted and the crime drama God's Pocket — and plans to appear in the next two Hunger Games films. He was preparing to star in a Showtime series, Happyish, and to direct Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal in Ezekiel Moss. He was primed to launch into the next phase of his already-brilliant career. "He wanted to be done with playing the sad-sack loser, the guy who's jerking off," his close friend,...

Even during his one brief moment in the sun, Jeff Buckley was the quietest of rock idols. He had the voice of an angel, and he would stretch that voice out, high and tremulous and almost unearthly in its delicacy, his rapid vibrato making him sound, at times, like a human theremin. When he sang a song like Nina Simone’s great “Lilac Wine,” he lingered on phrases and gave them an indulgent vocal caress, slowing the already slow song way, way down, as if he were trying to merge with each note, each phrase of soft despair. This wasn...

While "Greetings From Tim Buckley" premiered in Toronto recently, the other (and officially sanctioned) Jeff Buckley biopic "Mystery White Boy" still hasn't made it into production.
Now, Showbiz 411 (via The Playlist) seem to have discovered one possible reason why - a reshuffling of personnel behind the scenes.
At last report a few months ago, "Spider-Man" musical lead and "The Tempest" actor Reeve Carney was set to play the lead role while Jake Scott was directing. Now it seems "West Of Memphis" helmer Amy Berg has taken over directorial duties while Carney looks like he's out of the running.
Ryan Jaffe ("The Rocker") adapted the script from David Browne's book "Dream Brother". The story not only chronicles Buckley's life story, but also has access to his catalog of music.
Gemma Arterton, Olivia Thirlby, Harry Treadaway and Patricia Arquette were also previously linked to roles, whether that's still the case is unsure.

Even though the rival project "Greetings From Tim Buckley" is in the can and if not finished, then pretty much nearly there, the filmmakers behind the Jeff Buckley biopic "Mystery White Boy" are choosing to make it right intead of fast. With the rights locked up to use Buckley's music, the blessing of his estate who are also involved with the film, and with rehearsals with already under way with lead Reeve Carney, this one is aiming to be the only Buckley movie you'll need to see, and they're adding a trio of strong talent.
