Rupert Murdoch is cashing out. The idea of 21st Century Fox being consumed by Disney in a $52.4 billion all-stock deal has shocked Hollywood, where industry players never thought they’d see the powerful Fox behemoth be largely consumed, rather than do the consuming. But as one insider noted, Murdoch is looking toward his final legacy — and turning in his chips while the getting’s good.
“Rupert is 86. He’s looking toward setting up [his family],” one observer said. The industry is rapidly changing, and as the Disney deal currently values the 21st Century Fox assets at more than $66 billion, it’s probably never going to get better than that. Fox shareholders, including the Murdochs, could hold around 25 percent of a new mega-Disney, which will now be supremely positioned to face off with Netflix and other giants in the new media landscape.

Prison Break is plotting its re-return.

Six months after its most recent nine-episode revival ended, star Dominic Purcell is teasing that a second revival (aka Season 6) is in the early stages of development. The actor posted the series’ logo on Instagram and added the not-so-cryptic caption: “#PrisonBreak 6. In the works.”
It should be noted that Fox has not officially ordered a sixth season of Prison Break, although Fox Television Group CEO Dana Walden said last May that the network would “definitely consider doing more episodes,” but that Prison Break even...

Jake Johnson really did not want New Girl to end with last season’s Nick-Jess elevator smooch. So when series creator Liz Meriwether invited the cast to reach out directly to Fox co-chairmen Dana Walden and Gary Newman to plead their case for a final, abbreviated seventh season, he jumped at the chance.

Fantasia Barrino is getting “honest” about the forthcoming reboot of American Idol.
“I hope that it does really [well],” the American Idol winner told Et on Tuesday. “It had a long run, that’s a blessing in itself.”
The 33-year-old singer won season three of the singing competition, which originally aired on Fox from 2002 to 2016.

Thorn was most recently executive vice president of development at 20th Century Fox TV, where he worked on series including the NBC hit “This Is Us,” as well as Fox’s “Empire,” ABC’s “Speechless” and CBS’ “Life in Pieces.” He reports to Fox TV Group chairmen/CEOs Gary Newman and Dana Walden, who announced the appointment on Wednesday morning.
“We’ve worked with Michael for the past decade, and in terms of creative chops and leadership skills, he’s one of the best,” Newman and Walden said in a joint statement.

It’s easy to take “Modern Family” for granted now.
That’s actually a tribute to how much the comedy has become engrained in the fabric of television comedy. Don’t forget, “Modern Family” broke new ground in 2009 with its depiction of a diverse, multi-generational family and its relatable stories of what it’s like to interact with your relatives in the 21st century.
And the show continues to experiment with special episodes. For the upcoming Season 9 opener, the entire episode will take place in Lake Tahoe, on a houseboat. The “Modern Family” cast is set to shoot the episode (inspired by family trips co-creator Steve Levitan took as a kid) later this month in Tahoe.
Among other recent memorable episodes, two years ago, “Connection Lost” was shot entirely via social networking platforms like FaceTime, and this past season, the episode “Five Minutes” focused on several story vignettes, shot in real time.

If the “24” clock ticks again, it will be for very different reasons.
Fox executives confirmed Tuesday that executive producer Howard Gordon and Imagine TV’s Brian Grazer are kicking around completely new ideas for the real-time format that shifts away from its roots. A new version won’t likely focus on the show’s bread-and-butter terrorism and potential apocalypse storylines.
The decision to rethink the “24” universe comes after Fox opted not to bring back revival “24: Legacy” for another season. “24: Legacy” was pitched as a limited series, but might have continued had ratings been higher.
Fox TV Group chairman Dana Walden said “24: Legacy” still succeeded in giving viewers “a taste again” of the “24” franchise, and “whetted their appetites. We’re exploring where the next version might live.”
Walden said Gordon and Grazer “have an exciting idea that was very compelling, but we’re in the early stages.”

Season 11 of “The X-Files,” set to air on Fox, met with objections when it was discovered that it had an all-male writers’ room and no female directors. Chairman and CEO of Fox Television Group Dana Walden told reporters at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour Tuesday that she didn’t “want to make any excuses” about showrunner Chris Carter’s team, but that the all-male writers’ room came from the show’s tradition. “I just want to explain that after 200+ episodes of a show that has a very deep and specific mythology, where the fanbase has a very high expectation that.

Fox is getting back into the singing competition game.
One year after American Idol signed off on the network, it has ordered a new singing competition series, tentatively titled The Four, which may likely go up against Idol on ABC in 2018, Dana Walden and Gary Newman, chairmen and CEOs of Fox Television Group announced Tuesday.

The concept for The Four is unique: Based on an Israeli format, it begins with four finalists, chosen from their auditions by the show’s panel of music industry experts. Throughout the season, they will try to defend their coveted spots on the stage, as they are challenged individually by new singers determined to replace them. Each week, if any of the four are outperformed, they’ll go home and their challengers will take their place.

Fox plans to succeed “American Idol” with new singing competition “The Four,” executives announced Tuesday at the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour. Also during the Beverly Hilton media event, reality boss Rob Wade provided a pretty great summary of the complicated Israeli format adaptation, which will not be ready for American airwaves until 2018. “It’s basically like ‘Game of Thrones,’ with better singing and less nudity,” he quipped. Wade also called the concept “brilliantly dramatic, exciting and spontaneous” — but hyping new alternative series is kind of his job. Fox Television Group chairman and CEO Dana Walden added that she probably.
