Screenwriter Will Beall recently spent time writing adventures set in the high seas for James Wan's new Aquaman movie, and now he's heading back underwater, as THR reports that Universal Pictures has tapped the writer to pen the new Creature from the Black Lagoon movie for their shared cinematic universe of Universal Monsters.
Creature from the Black Lagoon will be produced by Chris Morgan and Alex Kurtzman, who are overseeing the new version of the shared Universal Monsters world, which will kick off with the theatrical release of The Mummy (directed by Kurtzman and starring Tom Cruise) on June 9th.
In addition to Aquaman, Beall wrote the big screen adaptation of Paul Lieberman's novel Gangster Squad, developed the Training Day TV series, and has also been working on The Legend of Conan film (produced by Morgan) for Warner Bros.

Director Ruben Fleischer is already well known for his hits Zombieland and Thirty Minutes or Less, but his latest movie, Gangster Squad is absolutely nothing like those features. That is to say, the gritty true-crime tale based on Paul Lieberman's seven-part La Times-published "Tales from the Gangster Squad" series is a full 180 degrees from Fleischer's comedic work. Somewhere in the middle between The Untouchables and Dick Tracy, Gangster Squad is an exceedingly bloody, bloodthirsty historical account of extensively-researched events from the early 20th century.
The film opens with an account of Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn), a mad-dog ex-boxer mob boss who violently disposes of any competitors. Penn plays Cohen so over-the-top it's impossible not to compare him to a Dick Tracy villain brought to life, a role he appears to relish. At times, his performance almost reaches Nicolas Cage levels of crazy.

Film: "Gangster Squad"; Actors: Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Sean Penn, Emma Stone, Robert Patrick, Micheal Pena, Anthony Mackie, Giovanni Ribisi, Nick Nolte and Mireille Enos; Director: Ruben Fleischer; Rating: **1/2 - glossy, synthetic.
A drill drives through a victim's skull, and when the blood splatters against the glass, the scene cuts to a raw hamburger patty hitting the fire of a backyard barbecue grill. That is only the beginning of blood and gore, and your are squirming already!
Inspired by a true story and based on a non-fiction book written by Paul Lieberman, "Gangster Squad" is a sleek, stylish but superficial.

“Gangster Squad” is a western masquerading as a gangster movie. It takes place in the Wild West — a virtually lawless 1949 Los Angeles — and some very bad dudes hold the town hostage. All the law can do is round up a bunch of good guys willing to be as bad as the bad guys and then run ‘em out of town. As these things go, this Warner Bros. production has an unusually starry cast and striking look with vintage cars and glistening period effects that pop off the screen. Lr reader Dic Hertz has sent in another awesome review. This time he shares his thoughts on Gangster Squad.
Review: Gangster Squad
Blessed with a great cast, style, attitude, jargon, and inevitable violence – “The Gangster Squad” lacked its most important component: A script!
Quite disappointing, the first big film of 2013 had potential, but wound up a fumble for director Ruben Fleischer who practically flushed an all-star cast and premise that had pretty big shoes to fill considering powerful predecessors.
Based on the book by Paul Lieberman, “Gangster Squad” is set in post WWII Los Angeles where monstrous, New Yorker, true life mob boss Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) built a crime empire on extortion, gambling, murder, corruption and fear. Declaring war is a group of hard-knock cops (Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Anthony Mackie, Giovanni Ribisi, Michael Peña, and Robert Patrick) who drop their badges and bring the pain.

It's too bad Gangster Squad is rated R, because the audience it most deserves won't be able to purchase a ticket. This is Dick Tracy-meets-The Untouchables filled with cartoon caricatures that create a tonal hodgepodge that left me wondering "Is this supposed to be funny?" Then again, funny or not, it certainly isn't any good. Set in 1949, and inspired by (but not nearly a true story) Paul Lieberman's seven-part, 2008 Los Angeles Times feature "Tales From the Gangster Squad", the film started coming together back in 2011 with an impressive list of names attached. Sean Penn plays East Coast mob boss Mickey Coen whose about to find his organization under attack by Josh Brolin's all-rules-are-off band of cops. Brolin plays Sgt. John O'Mara and of the others that join him, Ryan Gosling's Jerry Wooters gets the most screen time while Michael Pena, Robert Patrick, Anthony Mackie and Giovanni Ribisi...

Gangster Squad represents a missed opportunity. Director Ruben Fleischer and screenwriter Will Beall have discarded a great real-life story (uncovered by journalist Paul Lieberman in his book of the same name) and given us an overblown comic strip instead. The film starts out on a good note, with Josh Brolin as a straight-arrow veteran of World War II who is hired by Los Angeles police chief William H. Parker (Nick Nolte) to bring down ruthlessly ambitious gangster Mickey Cohen (overplayed by Sean Penn). His mission is to gather a small, secretive team of specialists to do whatever it takes to put the mobster out of business—without the official sanction of the L.A.P.D. For...

[May contain slight spoilers]
Towards the end of Gangster Squad, there’s a moment where Josh Brolin’s iron-jawed, principled cop Jon O’Mara and Sean Penn’s rubber-faced mob kingpin Mickey Cohen trade punches. As Ruben Fleischer’s camera yet again spins into slow motion, the fighters are drenched by the flumes of a recently-smashed fountain. The overbearing sentiment to this scene isn’t one of absorption or tension – it’s an acknowledgement that the sequence is incredibly similar to Simon Pegg’s model village fight with Timothy Dalton in Hot Fuzz. Fleischer’s film has already borrowed liberally from Martin Scorsese, Alan Parker and Raymond Chandler at this point, so a little more mimicry isn’t too severe an offence.
Yet the Hot Fuzz comparison is an especially unfavourable one for Gangster Squad. Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg lampooned the most high-octane entries in the buddy cop canon, yet their tongue-in-cheek take...

Ruben Fleischer’s Gangster Squad is the first film of the year that I’ve really been looking forward to. The movie features an all-star cast, led by Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Josh Brolin, and Sean Penn, and when you have such a powerful quartet at the top, there’s every reason to expect greatness.
The film is finally hitting theatres this weekend, with its original September release date pushed back following a shooting at a screening of The Dark Knight Rises last summer, with Warner Bros. deciding to re-film a scene they felt too closely echoed reality.
We were glad to share an exclusive new clip from the film at the weekend, and now the studio have released a great new featurette, taking us behind the scenes of filming and interviewing the cast.

For his third directorial effort following the genre mélange of action comedies “Zombieland” and “30 Minutes or Less,” Ruben Fleischer has taken a leap forward in scope and ambition, while taking the narrative back to 1940s Los Angeles. Inspired by the seven-part La Times articles by Paul Lieberman, “Gangster Squad” charts the apex of NY gangster Mickey Cohen's westward reign, and the guerilla band of Lapd organized to bring it to an end. Armed with a passion for period detail and a modern sensibility, Fleischer has stepped up to the challenge with a fantastic cast behind him, and at the film's Beverly Hills press conference last month, stars Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin and Emma Stone -- along with screenwriter/former Lapd cop Will Beall and producers Dan Lin and Kevin McCormick -- joined the director in describing the experience of bringing the project to the screen. 1. Fleischer secured the directorial gig with his distinct.

Ruben Fleischer, director of "Zombieland," "30 Minutes or Less" and now "Gangster Squad," is facing some less-than-stellar early reviews for his would-be-noir thriller about the Lapd vs. gangster Mickey Cohen in 1940s Los Angeles, based on Paul Lieberman's book of the same name. Turns out it reads more like a stock standard actioneer with plenty of violence, slick one-liners and one-dimensional characters. With the ensemble cast of Sean Penn, Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Mireille Enos, Michael Pena, Giovanni Ribisi and Nick Nolte, we had hoped for more. Reshoots were required after the July 2012 movie theater shootings in Aurora, Colorado. An early trailer for "Gangster Squad" also featured a sensationalized shooting scene in a theater. "Gangster Squad" arrives January 11. THR: "Unfortunately, all the characters are hardly more dimensional than caricatures, identifiable by one main trait and barely...

Manifest Destiny lies beside its essential hubris in the period actioner “Gangster Squad,” but beyond the swaggering idealism seen through eponymous hoodlum Mickey Cohen (played by Sean Penn), the film's saturated grab bag of glossy homage proves its final shortcoming. With his third feature, “Zombieland” director Ruben Fleischer frames 1940s Los Angeles -- morally compromised, glamorous, and a monument to protect and exploit on both sides of the law -- to adapt Paul Lieberman's true-crime articles into cinematic legend, but in lieu of any sharp insight into the period and its notorious figures, the film's brash, ultraviolent encounters instead build a showy exterior with nothing of import left standing. While these giants of crime and justice still remain, the shadow of Cohen -- historically a ruthless NY transplant turned westward -- lurks over every frame and exchange in post-wwii La. His prostitution and drug rings sneak underneath his...

Ruben Fleischer’s Gangster Squad is by far one of our most anticipated films of next year.
Originally set for release back in September, surrounded with Oscar buzz, Warner Bros. decided to push the film back in the wake of the summer shooting at a screening of The Dark Knight Rises in order to re-film a scene that they felt too closely echoed reality.
Its January release is now very much on the horizon, and we’ve been treated to two excellent exclusives this month, with a great new image and an awesome new trailer. And with less than two weeks before it hits the big screen, the studio have released a new featurette to raise the anticipation that much more.

And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians who are under his control.

Check out tons of new images from the Ruben Fleisher-directed Gangster Squad, starring Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, Emma Stone, Sean Penn, Anthony Mackie, Giovanni Ribisi and Nick Nolte. The Warner Bros. Pictures release opens in theaters from January January 11th, and looks simply outstanding judging by the latest trailer I saw. The story is based on La Times series "Tales from the Gangster Squad" penned by Paul Lieberman. Gangster Squad is poised to be one of the first big movies of 2013, when it finally arrives in cinemas. Below is a fascinating Questions and Answers session with the author Paul Lieberman, who’s popular Los Angeles Times column ‘'La Noir: Tales From The Gangster Squad' inspired the movie. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone will star alongside Sean Penn, Josh Brolin and a host of other fantastic actors. The Q&A gives a real insight into the mind behind the inspiration!!! And we've even included some old school era “noir” pics! Q: Anyone who sees the trailer for Warner Bros.’ movie version of “Gangster Squad” might think this is a classic cops-v.-robbers tale with lots of shootouts. But the book is much more, isn’t it? Yes, absolutely. On the surface, sure, it is the tale of two Los Angeles police veterans who become obsessed with the showboating...

Gangster Squad will see director Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) making his first foray outside of the comedy genre, and we can’t wait to see how it unfolds.
Led by Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Josh Brolin, and Sean Penn, there’s less than a month to go before it hits the big screen, and the anticipation is very much running on high for this one. We saw a great new featurette for the film last week, and now Warner Bros. have release a sixty-second TV spot to help make the wait that little bit easier.

Due out in the New Year, Ruben Fleischer’s Gangster Squad has one of the finest casts in recent memory, with a terrific leading quartet in Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Josh Brolin, and Sean Penn.
Originally set for release back in September, but then delayed to allow for a scene to be reshot in the wake of the shooting at a screening of The Dark Knight Rises over the summer, the film is now heading into theatres in January, and the anticipation is riding on high.
The official trailer (following the re-launched campaign) landed last month, and since then we’ve seen a handful of terrific character banners and posters, as well as most recently a full banner for the film. And following on from all of them comes another set of nine character posters, giving us a look at all of its leading cast (this time, including Nick Nolte).

Gangster Squad, the new film from director Ruben Fleischer, won't be out until January, but when you look at the amount of promotion Warner Bros. has done the past three days you'd think it were coming out next month. Earlier this week a brand new one-sheet, which was then followed by the latest theatrical trailer, and today the studio has delivered five brand spankin' new character posters. The series is actually pretty cool, as the characters kind of rotate in and out of the other pieces, though it's too bad that neither Nick Nolte or Anthony Mackie were able to score their own posters. You can see all five designs below and head over to Imp Awards to see them in their highest resolution. Based on the book by Paul Lieberman and adapted by Will Beall, the movie is set in 1940s and 50s Los Angeles when the East Coast...

Ruben Fleischer’s Gangster Squad was long one of the year’s most anticipated films, with its all-star cast led by Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, Emma Stone, and Sean Penn.
Unfortunately pushed back to the start of the New Year, following Warner Bros.’ decision to reshoot a scene in the wake of the tragic summer shooting at a screening of The Dark Knight Rises, the new campaign has been re-gearing up this week for its January release.
We caught a great new poster on Wednesday, followed by the official new trailer last night, and now five excellent character posters have made their way online.
Interestingly, they bear the original September 7th release date, so they’re not entirely new, but they do seem to be surfacing for the first time, following in the vein of the fantastic character art we saw back in July.

2009′s Zombieland, director Ruben Fleischer’s feature film debut, turned a lot of heads both critically and commercially by managing to be a fresh and engaging take on the well-worn horror comedy and zombie movie genres. Despite his follow-up feature, 30 Minutes or Less, also being classified as a comedy, Fleischer made the interesting choice to move completely away from the genre for his next project. Titled Gangster Squad, the movie is an adaptation of the Paul Lieberman literary serial, and stars Josh Brolin, Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Anthony Mackie, Nick Nolte, Giovanni Ribisi, Robert Patrick, and Emma Stone. A new trailer for the movie has now been released, and can be seen below.
