FBI agent Michael German’s infiltration of white-power groups is the inspiration for this flawed drama, with Toni Collette as Radcliffe’s maverick superior
Imperium is based on the experiences of FBI agent Michael German, who infiltrated neo-Nazi white-power groups with a view to uncovering terrorist plots of the Timothy McVeigh variety. The movie has Daniel Radcliffe improbably cast as Nate Foster, a nerdy agent whose supposed knack for interpersonal skills – rather perfunctorily established in an interrogation scene – catches the eye of his maverick superior Angela Zamparo (Toni Collette) who recruits him as an undercover operative – diverting him away from what the bureau considers the more pressing jihadi threat. So Nate must shave his head and get the bovver-boots on to pass muster as a white-power extremist and find out about the dirty-bomb outrage Angela suspects they’ve planned. Unlike most movies on this subject, Imperium avoids predictable identity-crisis clichés...

Director Daniel Ragussis chats to us about making Imperium, and working with Daniel Radcliffe...
Daniel Radcliffe’s latest effort to throw off the image of a boy wizard and establish himself as a daring young actor is Imperium, an undercover thriller that sees him shave his head and infiltrate a gang of Neo-Nazis who the FBI fear may be plotting a major terror attack. As well as offering a stand-out role for Radcliffe, the film also shines a light on a very serious issue: the white supremacy movement in America.
Domestic terror is a problem that doesn’t enter the public consciousness as much as other forms of terrorism, and this is something the film wants to draw attention to. It’s a taut, exciting thriller regardless of the subject matter, but there’s a lot more being attempted here. We caught up with first time director...

Clip It: Each day, Jon Davis looks at the world of trailers, featurettes and clips and puts it all in perspective. It's not easy to blend in with white supremacists, even if you're white. That's the lesson of this featurette, which succeeded in getting me interested in Imperium. Imperium is based on the true adventures of Michael German, who went undercover into that fairly unpleasant world and lived to write a book about it. In the fictional world, this was Agent Stan Zeeman's former job, and if real life is anything like fake life, this is the kind of work that can really screw a person up. It was interesting to hear both the former agent and the actor playing him (Daniel Radcliffe) talk about how little they knew about guns and espionage, especially the former agent. He din't not have a lot of training. As Michael German tells it,...

Forget monsters, vampires, and ghosts: People are the scariest thing there is. Few supernatural horrors have the power to unnerve and flat-out scare in the way a well-crafted realistic thriller can cause an audience to become unglued. “We Need to Talk About Kevin” is light on jump scares, but it is more terrifying than any other film this decade. “Green Room” positively owns viewers by confronting them with a very believable, everyday evil. The bleak “Imperium,” in which Daniel Radcliffe plays a young FBI agent (based on real-life Fed Michael German) who goes undercover with neo-Nazis to uncover potential plans.

People forget that before 9/11 our idea of a terrorist was a lone wolf type: domestic white Neo Nazis with agendas that warped their intellect into working towards creating chaos to spark a cleansing. It’s therefore interesting to look at the constituency of Donald Trump, a candidate running on a ticket that not only incites race wars but also ensures white Catholics’ safety becomes synonymous with the “nation’s safety.” I guess the idea posed in The Turner Diaries may have been proven correct as each subsequent attack by locals, foreign agents, or both has brought us to this juncture in time. Fear and paranoia has set in, our sights focused on the “other” rather than ourselves. It’s a landscape ripe for a battle to destroy us all.

The narrative is always the same: Daniel Radcliffe is doing something that’s not “Harry Potter”! Since his formative (both personally and professionally) “Harry Potter” days, the British actor has consistently mixed up his roles, jumping from ambitious turns on Broadway to offbeat offerings like this year’s “Swiss Army Man” and 2013’s “Horns,” to a handful of studio outings like “Now You See Me 2” to the occasional drama like “Kill Your Darlings.” He’s found time to do television (“A Young Doctor’s Notebook”) and animation (“Bojack Horseman”). He starred in a seriously successful horror film (“The Woman in Black”) and matched wits with Zoe Kazan in the charming rom-com “What If.”
And still, the story remains: Daniel Radcliffe is doing something that’s not “Harry Potter”! For his latest film, Daniel Ragussis’ crime drama “Imperium,” Radcliffe is again doing something different, playing an FBI agent who goes...

In the years since graduating from (or surviving) Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, “Harry Potter” star Daniel Radcliffe has shown a consistent and fiercely impressive desire to use his fame in order to follow his muse. And Radcliffe’s muse has led him to a number of comically dark places, letting the Brit actor’s willingness to forge his own gnarled path become a reliable talking point, rehashed and reinvigorated with every performance as a pariah who grows devil horns or a hunchbacked assistant to a mad scientist.
But “Imperium,” in which he plays a fresh-faced FBI recruit who goes deep undercover with a group of scheming neo-Nazis, is the first of Radcliffe’s post-Potter roles that isn’t delivered with a wink, the first that — if it went terribly awry — couldn’t be written off as an elaborate goof. As serious as sedition itself, the icon’s wholly...

With his starring turn in Daniel Ragussis' debut feature about a young FBI agent infiltrating a white-supremacist organization, Daniel Radcliffe continues his mission of shedding every vestige of his most famous screen character. Bringing us the startling sight of the British actor sporting a shaved head and spewing racial hatred, Imperium traffics in familiar undercover cop thriller conventions while gaining resonance from its disturbing, timely milieu. Based on the real-life experiences of former FBI agent Michael German (who's given story credit), the thriller opens with fresh-faced agent Nate Foster (Radcliffe) getting assigned to go undercover in a

The convenient fiction promoted by many in the western world – that threats come from elsewhere – is about to be torn to shreds by writer-director Daniel Ragussis, in his feature-length debut, Imperium. Inspired by real events, the story was written by former FBI terrorism specialist, Michael German, and shines a very bright light on the issue of domestic, right-wing militias operating inside the United States of America.
Michael German spent 16 years with the FBI – initially investigating white collar crime, until another agent tapped him for undercover work, specifically because he had blonde hair and blue eyes. Tasked with infiltrating a neo-nazi group, German was instrumental in dismantling a number of potentially lethal terrorist plots, until he reported official misconduct and found his career ending.

Daniel Radcliffe now has both an ally and an adversary for the upcoming thriller "Imperium": Toni Collette ("Little Miss Sunshine"), as FBI vet Angela Zampino, and Tracy Letts ("Homeland"), as white supremacist Dallas Wolf. "True Blood" heartthrob Sam Trammel also joins the cast as Jerry Conrad, a suburban father and Aryan youth recruiter. Radcliffe stars as Nate Foster, a young FBI agent who goes undercover in a white supremacist group in order to expose a plot to detonate a dirty bomb. The script, co-written by former FBI agent Mike German and director Daniel Ragussis, is inspired by German's 16-year career in counter-terrorism. Production on the film, which will be distributed by Lionsgate Premiere, the company's new multi-platform specialty label, begins this week in Virginia.

Daniel Radcliffe, is that you?! The actor unveiled a new look on Tuesday -- and it has us doing a double take. The 26-year-old showed off his new buzzed 'do in a photo he shared on his Google Plus account. "Hi Everyone. Here's the first look of me as FBI agent Nate Foster in "Imperium". We began filming the movie this week. I'm very excited about it and will tell you more about it soon!" he captioned the photo. While it's clear that the dramatic makeover is for a new role, we haven't seen Radcliffe look this fresh-faced since his "Harry Potter" days. In "Imperium," Radcliffe plays agent Michael German, as an FBI analyst who infiltrates a group of neo-Nazis who are trying to construct a dirty bomb. The flick begins production in Richmond, Virginia this week. Before his movie makeover, Daniel had been sporting a very scruffy look for quite some time.
