Mel Gibson is not producing a four-part documentary centered on child sex trafficking, TheWrap has confirmed.
False reports of the Oscar-winning actor and filmmaker’s involvement in the project’s development with Operation Underground Railroad began circulating this week, leading Gibson’s publicist and the nonprofit organization’s founder Tim Ballard to release statements debunking the claims.
“Mel deserves all the credit for taking the initiative to further the critical work that we do,” Ballard said in a statement Thursday. “I am personally grateful for his support as we worked on this documentary, however reports this four-part series is actually being produced by Mr. Gibson are not accurate. It’s being produced by Nick Nanton of DNA Films and includes several executive producers such as Kyle Cease, Tony and Sage Robbins and other wonderful and talented people.”

Exclusive: Timothy Ballard’s book Slave Stealers: True Accounts Of Slave Rescues Then & Now is set for TV adaptation with 6 Underground actor and consultant and former Navy Seal Remi Adeleke penning the script with Cody Newton (formerly Cody Gifford).
Emmy-winning Nick Nanton is producing alongside Brian Norton and Ballard through their StoweAway Productions, with Adeleke’s 8th Wonder Entertainment. Ballard’s Operation Underground Railroad, the non-profit set up to combat human trafficking, is also involved.
The book follows two real life abolitionists who fought one of the most shockingly persistent evils of the world: human trafficking and sexual exploitation of slaves. The show’s first season will tell the story of Harriet Jacobs who serves as the book’s centerpiece. Born into slavery in the early 1800s, Jacobs fought her way to freedom and became an abolitionist and the first known female slave to document the sexual harassment and abuse she faced while enslaved.

A cheerleading portrait of the co-creator of the blockbuster Chicken Soup for the Soul self-help books, Nick Nanton's The Soul of Success: The Jack Canfield Story presents its subject as a selfless man who lives to inspire others. Light biography is paired with clips of public appearances and copious testimonials, all leaving the viewer with the notion that a bit of positive thinking can turn any life around. Given how successful Canfield is in selling tickets to daylong seminars, there seems to be some audience for the documentary's niche theatrical release.
