Additional casting for the Broadway run was not announced.
Produced by Seaview and Creative Partners Productions, the Broadway revival will feature choreography by Lorin Latarro, scenic design by David Zinn, lighting design by Justin Townsend, costume design by Andrea Hood, hair and wig Design by J. Jared Janas and sound design by Kai Harada.

With 36 productions eligible for this year’s Tony Awards, there were plenty of names missing when nominations were announced by Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Renée Elise Goldsberry on Tuesday morning. Among the most surprising 2024 Tony nominations snubs was “Patriots.” Peter Morgan‘s history play about Russia earned three Olivier Award nominations last year, including Best New Play, Actor (Tom Hollander) and Featured Actor (Will Keen). In New York, it only scored one for Michael Stuhlbarg, who took over the role played by Hollander in the UK; Keen, who reprises his role as Vladimir Putin, did not score a nomination in a category stuffed with “Stereophonic” performers.
The revival of “The Who’s Tommy” also significantly underperformed. Gold Derby users predicted it would land three nominations for Best Musical Revival, Best Actor for Ali Louis Bourzgui and Best Choreographer for Lorin Latarro, but it only earned one bid in the top revival category.

“Dance is my language, so it was a lot of fun,” expresses Lorin Latarro about working on the revival of “The Who’s Tommy,” which is a show told as much through the songs by Pete Townshend as the choreography. This production, which arrives on Broadway 31 years after the original, comes from Des McAnuff, who co-wrote the book with Townshend and directed that first staging in 1993. The choreographer “had to learn the music as deeply as Des,” who knows “every millisecond,” and says their work on the revival “unfolded collaboratively beautifully.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
McAnuff has introduced a framing device to this production that begins “in the future.” Latarro immediately understood that move because “‘Tommy’ will go on and on as an album, trauma will go on and on, hopefully healing in tandem with that trauma, is part of the human condition.” It also informed her approach to the movement of this production,...

Certainly one definition of great music might include an ability to meet the present – and the future – head-on and come out unbruised, even triumphant. By that standard and many more, The Who’s Tommy, opening tonight on Broadway, is thrilling proof that the premiere concept album of 1969 is great music indeed.
Gloriously directed by Des McAnuff and updated by him and composer-lyricist Pete Townshend from their own 1993 original Broadway staging, The Who’s Tommy is a non-stop surge of electrified energy, a darting pinball of a production that syncs visual panache with 55-year-old songs that sound as vital today as they must have at Woodstock. Themes of enlightenment and connection, trauma and recovery, truth and lies and blinkered hero worship feel more relevant in the 21st Century than Townshend could possibly have imagined way back in the waning days of the ’60s.

The 2016 Tony Awards were something of a rout: With its 11 wins, Hamilton was the only new musical to take home any trophies at all. But it wasn’t the only Broadway smash of the season. Waitress, the smaller-scale, utterly lovely adaptation of writer-director Adrienne Shelly’s 2007 film, ran for nearly four years, finally closing in January 2020.
Like Hamilton, Waitress’s composer-lyricist would come to also star in the production: Singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles appeared for three short stints in the lead role, causing the box office to surge each time. When theaters reopened, so, too, did Waitress, in a limited remounting in late 2021, designed in part to allow the cameras to capture Bareilles’s performance. This film was no doubt inspired by the artistic and commercial success of Hamilton’s “pro-shot,” as official films of stage performances have come to be known in the theater community.

Gotta feeling ’24 is gonna be a good year, at least for fans of The Who’s Tommy: The acclaimed Chicago stage production directed by Des McAnuff is heading to Broadway.
The newly reimagined production, produced by Stephen Gabriel and Ira Pittelman, will begin previews March 8, 2024, at the Nederlander Theatre, with an opening night set for March 28.
In a statement, Pete Townshend, who wrote the music, lyrics and co-wrote the book with McAnuff, said, “In 1969, when I originally wrote Tommy with The Who, nobody had ever written popular music songs about trauma, nobody talked about bullying, domestic sexual abuse was a subject that was virtually censored.
“Then, in 1993,” he continued, “working with Des on the staged theatre piece, we broke the established rules for a musical show. Now, the current generation is breaking all of those rules again – and what Des has achieved with this incredible new production honors them and their courage and audacity.

With more than 1,500 performances during its initial 2016-2020 Broadway run, and a subsequent three-month post-Covid-shutdown remount, Waitress: The Musical baked its way into the hearts of theatergoers, and in December folks who didn’t make it to New York City will get a chance to see what the fuss was about: Bleecker Street and Fathom Events have set nationwide special-event screenings for five nights only beginning December 7.

The Tony-nominated Waitress arrives in theaters on December 7, 2023 to kick off a five-day series of screenings. Starring composer-lyricist Sara Bareilles, the Broadway musical is based on Adrienne Shelly’s 2007 film that starred Keri Russell, Nathan Fillion, and Jeremy Sisto.
The production entered the record books as the first Broadway musical with a top creative team comprised of four women – book by Jessie Nelson, music and lyrics by Sara Bareilles, choreography by Lorin Latarro, and direction by Diane Paulus. Opening in 2016, the Brooks Atkinson Theatre hosted 1,500+ performances of the musical, making it one of the longest-running shows in recent history.
Bareilles says Waitress changed her life, and composing the music was a gift.
“The film is funny and dark and feminine and irreverent and emotional and so very, very musical,” said Bareilles, recalling watching Shelly’s film for the first time. “I found a piece of myself in each of these...

For those who wanted to see “Waitress” on stage but couldn’t, or for those who want a more convenient route to see it again, Bleecker Street and Fathom Events are bringing it to a theater near you.
Tickets are on sale now for the five-day engagement, which will run from Dec. 7 through Dec. 11 with one or two shows offered daily. This isn’t unusual for Fathom, but it’s another example of theaters filling seats with less-conventional programming and demographically specific event films.
“Waitress” stars Sara Bareilles, who also wrote the music and lyrics, as a waitress and pie maker stuck in a loveless marriage with a baby on the way. A baking contest offers a chance at escape, as does an unexpected romance with a man who treats her right.

Chicago – The Opening Night ovation certainly acknowledged that the audience “Saw, Felt, was Touched and Healed” by the passionate and celebratory performance of “The Who’s Tommy.” Adapted from the iconic rock opera created by The Who in 1969, the Goodman Theater revival … with 1990s origins … was written by Pete Townsend and Des McAnuff (also director).
The adaptation was maniacally choreographed and thoughtfully presented, with an amazing looking stage design, and lead actor Ali Louis Bourzgui delivered a heroic rendering of the conflicted title boy who turns off his life, only to revive it through a literal breakthrough. The Goodman Theatre run, which will go to Broadway, has been extended to August 6th, 2023. For ticket info and more, click Tommy.
Play Rating: 4.5/5.0
The story is rooted in the British World War II, as Tommy’s eventual father Captain Walker (Adam Jacobs) meets and marries his mother (Allison Luff) during the conflict, but is captured by the Germans.

Just shy of one month ago, a revival of legendary composer Stephen Sondheim’s musical “Company” took home five Tony Awards, including the top prize for Best Revival. Now a remounting of one of his most popular works, “Into the Woods,” has just kicked off the new 2022-2023 Broadway season. The production, which opened at the St. James Theatre on July 10 for an extremely limited run, originated as a starry two-week gala at New York City Center in May and earned such acclaim that it quickly announced this Broadway engagement with most of its cast in tact.
Brilliantly weaving together different fairytale characters, “Into the Woods” is a beautiful and moving fable (and cautionary tale) about parenting and community and of childhood wonder and the loss of innocence. Is There Still Sex in the City? will begin performances Nov. 13 at Manhattan’s Daryl Roth Theatre for a 12-week limited engagement. Official opening night is set for December 7. Tickets go on sale today.
Written and starring Bushnell, who is definitely a Carrie, Is There Still Sex in the City? marks her stage debut in the city that started it all. Audiences will experience Bushnell’s humor and insights into life, love, relationships, and hear stories about how a young woman reinvented her life and in the process created a cultural phenomenon. Kwame Kwei-Armah and Shaina Taub’s musicalized “Twelfth Night” is the kind of outdoor summer theater that transcends bad weather. Even if the skies crackle with lightning and showers soak you in your seat (as happened to this critic), you’ll still leave Central Park’s Delacorte Theater beaming. The co-creators take Shakespeare’s themes and wrap them in an ebullient package, making sure everything about this production — from the inclusive casting to the use of American Sign Language to the invitation to the audience to come mingle with the cast on stage at the start — says “welcome.” With a score of catchy tunes and ardent performances, it’s a happy marriage of a classic play with a contemporary execution.
Presented here as part of the Public Theater’s Free Shakespeare in the Park program, this “Twelfth Night” was created through Public Works, the initiative that sees members of community...
