The Tony Awards Administration Committee met for the fourth and final time during the 2023-2024 Broadway season on April 26, to discuss eligibility of 12 productions for the 77th Annual Tony Awards in 2024.
The productions discussed were: “The Wiz,” “Suffs,” “Stereophonic,” “Hell’s Kitchen,” “Cabaret,” “The Heart of Rock and Roll,” “Patriots,” “Mary Jane,” “Uncle Vanya,” “Illinoise,” “Mother Play,” and “The Great Gatsby.”
The most impactful decision of this announcement is the determination that both Steve Carell and William Jackson Harper will be eligible for Lead Actor in a Play for the Lincoln Center Theatre revival of “Uncle Vanya.” Most prognosticators assumed that Harper would contend in the Featured Actor race. This category switch means that Lead Actor in a Play will have a guaranteed five nominees. Conversely, Anika Noni Rose was not bumped up to the Lead Actress in a Play category, so that race will contain just four guaranteed nominees...

Peter Morgan’s new play Patriots, now on Broadway, opens with an awareness of its audience. “In the West you have no idea,” Boris Berezovksy (an excellent Michael Stuhlbarg) says through a voiceover. “You think of Russia as a cold, bleak place, full of hardship and cruelty.” The stage is bare, and the oligarch, who played an instrumental role in Vladimir Putin’s rise to power, speaks to us from a liminal space. He goes on to describe the beauty of his country, Russian music, the sounds of children laughing in the streets and the taste of ice cream on a cold day.
When the stage comes into view (set design by Miriam Buether, lighting design by Jack Knowles), it’s 1955. Berezovsky is a schoolboy gifted in mathematics. A teacher urges his parents — congenial and full of quips — to push their son. “Anyone can be a doctor, Mrs. Berezovsky,” says...

Andrew Scott has been awarded Best Actor at the 33rd Critics’ Circle Theatre Awards. The win makes the Irish actor the first performer to be handed top honors from both of the UK’s national critics bodies.
Scott won the Theatre Awards award for his performance in Vanya, a one-man Chekov adaptation during which Scott plays eight different characters in conversation with each other. Scott landed the same award late last year from the Film Critics Circle, also under the UK Critics’ Circle umbrella for his performance in Andrew Haigh’s enigmatic feature All Of Us Strangers.
Sarah Hemming, the chief theater critic of the Financial Times, described Scott’s performance in Vanya as “tremendously moving, dialing up the empathy at the heart of that great, humane play and at the heart of live theatre” when she presented him with the award.

Exclusive: The Stranger Things stage show, an unbelievably brilliant new blueprint for theatricality that premieres in London’s West End tonight, will be the first installment in a trilogy exploring the dark underbelly of Hawkins, Indiana.
Breaking Baz can reveal that parts two and three are set to follow the inaugural play, Stranger Things: The First Shadow, in two- or three-year intervals, according to insiders associated with the production. The stage sequels will launch in London first.
Meanwhile, there are already plans for Stranger Things: The First Shadow to transfer to Broadway.
None of that’s official yet, of course. Producers and backers will study reviews out on Friday and across the weekend and the box office receipts before green-lighting any further productions.

It will mark the franchise’s first-ever live stage adaptation, and a fall 2024 debut in London is planned.
London veteran Matthew Dunster has been set to direct the play, which is moving forward with the blessing of Collins, who wrote the now four-novel series that were adapted for the screen and starred Jennifer Lawrence. The fourth novel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, is a prequel and its film adaptation starring Rachel Zegler, Tom Blyth, Viola Davis and Hunter Schafer, hits cinemas next month with Francis Lawrence returning to direct.

A trailer for the Stranger Things stage play promises fans will not only get to return to The Upside Down soon, but might also get some clues into what’s ahead in season five.
The minute-long trailer for Stranger Things: The First Shadow was posted to the show’s social media Wednesday, and featured a series of clips presented on a static-y analog TV. “The beginning of the Stranger Things story might hold the key to what is next…” the trailer teases. Beyond images of the popular Netflix series’ cast and scenes from seasons past, eight buttons, a clock with spiders spilling out and a red-lit stage are also featured.

Henry Creel's dark past is coming to light in the Duffer Brothers' forthcoming "Stranger Things" stage play, "Stranger Things: The First Shadow." The Duffer Brothers are leaving Easter eggs for the fifth and final season of “Stranger Things” in suitably strange places, like the upcoming stage play “The First Shadow.”

A very cool teaser trailer for the upcoming Stranger Things stage adaptation The First Shadow doesn’t give away much by way of plot details, but we do see some clips of the TV series’ early episodes only to watch the screen shatter and a mysterious red, glowing orb appear on the stage of an otherwise empty theater.
Then, slowly appearing, are the words: “The beginning of the Stranger Things Story Might Hold The Key To What Comes Next”.
That empty West End theater won’t stay that way for long: The First Shadow, revealed by Deadline last summer, will begin performances Nov. 17 at London’s Phoenix Theatre, and judging by the Phoenix’s ticket site, performances are already sold out through mid-December.

According to our current combined predictions, Jodie Comer (“Prima Facie”) is the frontrunner to win Best Actress in a Play at this year’s Tony Awards with 12/5 odds. She already won an Olivier a couple of months ago for her work in the West End production. She would be the fifth Tony winner in this category for a one-woman performance.
In Suzie Miller‘s one-woman show, Comer plays Tessa, a barrister from working-class origins who must deal with an unexpected event that forces her to confront the patriarchal power and morality of the law.
When it comes to solo performances at the Tonys, four have prevailed in this category before. Killing Eve star Jodie Comer claims Broadway as her own in her tour de force performance of Prima Facie, a scalding indictment of the law and its limits opening tonight at the Golden Theatre.
Comer plays Tessa, a young, working class Liverpool woman who has become one of London’s most promising defense lawyers through sheer intelligence and needle-sharp courtroom instincts. Her specialty – perhaps, or perhaps not, foisted upon her by the cynical male superiors who run things in ways Tessa only slowly comprehends – is the defense of men charged with sexual assault.
Tessa’s outwardly compassionate, woman-to-woman cross-examinations of assault victims are no less effective for their sympathetic overtones, perhaps more so. Her probing questions and geiger-counter instincts for finding the hidden bombs that will blow a victim’s story to smithereens make Tessa an invaluable force in the courtroom.

Her probing questions and geiger-counter instincts for finding the hidden bombs that will blow a victim’s story to smithereens make Tessa an invaluable force in the courtroom.

Stranger Things has spawned a stage play. Kate Trefry, a writer and co-executive producer on the critically acclaimed, award-winning Netflix series, wrote Stranger Things: The First Shadow, which will launch in London’s West End’s Phoenix Theatre later this year.
The play’s based on an original story by the Duffer Brothers, Jack Thorne, and Kate Trefry, and is rooted in the world and mythology of the series. Netflix offered this description of Stranger Things: The First Shadow:
“Hawkins, 1959: a regular town with regular worries. Young Jim Hopper’s car won’t start, Bob Newby’s sister won’t take his radio show seriously and Joyce Maldonado just wants to graduate and get the hell out of town. When new student Henry Creel arrives, his family finds that a fresh start isn’t so easy… and the shadows of the past have a very long reach.

Many a true word hath been spoken in jest, but this is legit: Glenda Jackson’s King Lear will end its Broadway run on June 9. It originally was pegged to run through July 7.
Producer Scott Rudin announced the pending final curtain today.
Two-time Oscar winner Jackson starred as Shakespeare’s famous king of England who divides his realm among his three daughters and their spouses. She won an Olivier Award for the role when it played London’s West End in 2016, but this was an entirely new production. The Broadway cast also includes Jayne Houdyshell, Elizabeth Marvel, Aisling O’Sullivan, Pedro Pascal, John Douglas Thompson and Ruth Wilson, who is up for a Featured Actress Tony Award next month for her role as Cordelia.
In his review of the show, Deadline’s Greg Evans enthused: “So ferocious, so sinewy is [Jackson’s] take on Shakespeare’s lion in winter that those famously...

Update, with Scott Rudin quote, additional background Broadway doesn’t need Damon Runyon to prove yet again there’s no such thing as a sure bet: The To Kill A Mockingbird snub from the Tony Awards’ best play category today was easily the most surprising and confounding element of today’s nomination announcements.
“I don’t have an explanation for it,” Mockingbird director Bartlett Sher told Deadline from Berlin, where he’s directing an opera. Sher was nominated in the directing category, and cast members Jeff Daniels, Celia Keenan-Bolger and Gideon Glick got nominations. Filling out the Mockingbird’s total of nine nomations are Adam Guettel (original score); Miriam Buether (scenic design); Ann Roth (costume design); Jennifer Tipton (lighting design); and Scott Lehrer (sound design).
But not Aaron Sorkin’s adaptation, despite massive press attention, public debate, box office heat and critical praise.

After her Tony Awards coronation last season for Edward Albee’s “Three Tall Women,” Glenda Jackson could have rested on her laurels. Instead, she returns to the Broadway stage this season in the gargantuan title role of William Shakespeare’s “King Lear” in a production directed by Sam Gold that opened at the Cort Theatre on April 4.
Gold has assembled an all-star cast for Jackson’s Lear to rage against, including Tony-winner Jayne Houdyshell (“The Humans”), and Tony-nominees John Douglas Thompson (“Jitney”) and Ruth Wilson (“Constellations”), amongst over a dozen others. An original score by legendary composer Philip Glass, performed on-stage by a string quartet, accompanies the cast as they play out the machinations that characterize one of Shakespeare’s most enduring and challenging plays.

With the arrival of her mighty Lear, Glenda Jackson has, in the span of a year, provided Broadway with twin portraits of once towering figures humbled by age – last year a matriarch in Three Tall Women, now theater’s ultimate patriarch in King Lear, opening tonight at the Cort Theatre. I’ve no doubt she could come back next spring as young Harry Potter if she sets her mind to it.
So ferocious, so sinewy is her take on Shakespeare’s lion in winter that those famously spoiled daughters and their menfolk would seem wise to send their regrets and just not show up to any family reunions. Lucky for us, they give as good as they get.

Without knowing any better, one might easily mistake the new stage adaptation of Harper Lee's Pulitzer-winning 1960 novel 'To Kill A Mockingbird' for a revival of a classic Golden Age Broadway drama. So earnest in tone and full of plainspoken poetics is Aaron Sorkin's thoroughly engaging text. So old-school honest are the performances given by director Bartlett Sher's 24-member cast, beautifully framed in rural elegance designed by Miriam Buether set, Ann Roth costumes and Jennifer Tipton lights.

The gorgeous, deceptively calming bedroom set that frames Three Tall Women at Broadway’s John Golden Theatre loses none of its beauty with the lights way up and the house empty.
Mantello, one of the stage’s premiere directors currently represented on Broadway with two new productions – this one and the soon-to-open The Boys in the Band at the Booth Theatre, both joining the forever-open Wicked – is explaining how Miriam Buether’s impeccably appointed set works. How it expands, or shape-shifts, from the real-world elegance of a wealthy woman’s boudoir to, in the play’s second half, something altogether less of this earth, doubling into its own doppelganger and becoming home to the past and present, the now and the remembered.

Edward Albee won three Pulitzer Prizes over the course of his distinguished career, with two of those award-winning plays (“A Delicate Balance,” “Seascape”) bowing on Broadway during his lifetime. Surprisingly, “Three Tall Women,” the last of his Pulitzer-winning works, had never been seen on the rialto until now, as the play finally debuted with a starry production that opened at the Golden Theatre on March 29. As its title suggests, the drama boasts three formidable actresses—two-time Oscar winner and four-time Tony nominee Glenda Jackson, who returns to the Broadway stage for the first time since 1988; recent Tony winner and Oscar nominee Laurie Metcalf; and Tony nominee Alison Pill—directed by two-time Tony winner Joe Mantello.
“Three Tall Women,” a semi-autobiographical depiction of Albee’s adoptive mother, centers on a nonagenarian suffering from failing health and memory (Jackson), her caretaker (Metcalf) and a representative for her attorney (Pill). The relationships established...

Nearly 30 years ago, when Edward Albee was explaining why he’d develop his new play Three Tall Women in Vienna, the great playwright excoriated New York’s commercial stage. Broadway, he said, was not our national theater, it was our national disgrace.
Harsh in ’91, absurd beyond measure tonight with the premiere of Joe Mantello’s superb staging of the play’s long-in-coming Broadway premiere. Starring the redoubtable Glenda Jackson, Laurie Metcalf and Alison Pill, Albee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning late-career masterpiece has been given the loving, impeccable production that Albee apparently thought was beyond Broadway’s reach (Scott Rudin leads a team of producers that includes Barry Diller, Eli Bush and James L. Nederlander, among others).
When it debuted Off Broadway in ’94, Three Tall Women did seem to make some sort of case for Broadway’s inhospitality to serious drama (intelligent serious, not no laughs serious). Anyone who saw it could...

Watching Glenda Jackson in theatrical flight is like looking straight into the sun. Her expressive face registers her thoughts while guarding her feelings. But it’s the voice that really thrills. Deeply pitched and clarion clear, it’s the commanding voice of stern authority. Don’t mess with this household god or she’ll turn you to stone.
Her character, designated “A,” in Edward Albee’s surreal manner, is the dominant figure in the maternal triad that the scribe drew to represent three stages in the life of his own adoptive mother, with whom he had a complicated, not to say rocky relationship. “B” (Laurie Metcalf, a great actress oddly miscast) characterizes the same woman in middle age, conscious of her mental and physical strength, but uncertain of her actual power. “C” (Alison Pill, looking panicked) represents the same mother figure, but in her youth, observing her older selves in horror.
