One of the most important elements of delivering a memorable movie monster is the reveal. It’s a pivotal moment that finally sees the threat reveal itself in full to its prey, often heralding the final climactic confrontation, which can make or break a movie monster. It’s not just the creature effects and craftmanship laid bare; a monster’s reveal means the horror is no longer up to the viewer’s imagination.
When to reveal the monstrous threat is just as important as How, and few contemporary creature features have delivered a monster reveal as surprising or as cool as 2020’s Underwater.
The Setup
Director William Eubank’s aquatic creature feature, written by Brian Duffield (No One Will Save You) and Adam Cozad (The Legend of Tarzan), is set around a deep water research and drilling facility, Kepler 822, at the bottom of the Mariana Trench, sometime in the future.

Ape x Mecha Ape: New World Order is the third film in a trilogy that The Asylum began in Ape vs Monster and continued in Ape vs Mecha Ape. Or more likely the third film in a series that will last as long as there are megabudget Kong vs Godzilla films to provide inspiration for their mockbuster franchise.

With Legendary’s big budget Hollywood blockbuster Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire dominating the box office, you knew it wouldn’t be long before The Asylum whipped up their own “mockbuster” version of the film. Their answer to Godzilla x Kong? It’s titled Ape x Mecha Ape: New World Order, a sequel to last year’s Ape vs. Mecha Ape, naturally.
Ape x Mecha Ape: New World Order will be available on Digital beginning April 5, and it pits the two titular titans up against, well, a mockbuster take on Lovecraft’s Cthulhu. Naturally!
In Ape x Mecha Ape, “A global cabal of world leaders awakens an ancient creature beneath the ocean floor. Now mankind’s only hope rests on an uneasy alliance between the giant ape and his mechanical arch-nemesis, Mecha Ape MkII, to save the Earth.”
The film will also be playing in the following theaters this Friday:

The onset of Folk Horror with its rich heritage of tales, mysteries and events from countries is a fountainhead for art, film and literature. Many like my own which is Canada has failed to use the huge amount of material that abounds likely out of prejudice or frankly poor judgment for the all-important Box office appeal. That is why it was such a pleasure to view this Greek-produced monster/comedy film Minore (2023).

We’ve had plenty of Lovecraftian cult simulators, so leave it to a developer like Crazy Goat Games to come up with a Lovecraftian city builder. Worshippers of Cthulhu is currently in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam. The game will launch in Early Access in later this year, followed by a full release across all platforms in 2025.
According to the devs, since Cthulhu “tolerates nothing less than perfection”, the game will head to Early Access in order to deliver a “polished and immersive experience,” with the plan to “allow players to spend much more time with the game and go even deeper into the Cthulhu and city-building mechanics.”
As you might of expected, the story for Worshippers of Cthulhu has you leading the eponymous cult, with the goal of guiding your flock towards the ultimate goal of awakening Cthulhu. Every decision rests upon your shoulders; will...

It’s no big surprise that Lovecraft and video games have done a dance or two over the years. Lovecraft dabbling in the fear of the unknown and unknowable, the madness resulting from being unable to comprehend what it is we see, and of course, the go-to for many in the Cthulhu mythos, aka “The Thing That Should Not Be”. The latest taste of Lovecraftian mythos arrives on March 20th with Thq Nordic and Pieces Interactive’s long-awaited Alone in the Dark remake. The series has largely stuck with cosmic horror throughout its entries, and from the sounds of things, the upcoming remake will have fans once again jumping into the thick of it. But we didn’t get here overnight, obviously. There have been numerous titles that have used Lovecraft’s writings to get us here (Steam alone lists over 950 games tagged “Lovecraftian”), so let’s pare it down...

Chad Ferrin, director of the outrageous fun Exorcism at 60,000 Feet follows up his 2020 foray into the world of H.P. Lovecraft, The Deep Ones, with The Old Ones – an even truer take on the work of Lovecraft than ever before, including the likes of Captain Marsh, Cthulhu and R’lyeh.
Speaking of Captain Marsh, The Old Ones sees two fishermen, Dan Gordon (Scott Vogel) and his son Gideon (Benjamin Philip), pull an old man out of the water. He turns out to be Marsh, who explains that he’s been kept alive for the past 93 years as a vessel of the Great Old One and then sacrificed to the same gods by the cult of worshippers – as seen in this film’s animated intro.

Rarely do movies make me speechless, and I have watched a lot of movies. Some of them have been the greatest things that my eyes have seen, while others have made me feel like I might require an eye-bleach. The last time a movie made me question my decisions was when I watched Sandeep Vanga’s Animal. “Never Again!” I thought to myself, but a week or so later, I’ve had to watch Gods of the Deep. Recently, a friend of mine told me to keep an open mind while indulging in this passion, especially with films I do not think highly of. So, I admitted my bias and proceeded to watch this horror flick. Understandably, the horror genre isn’t really known for its dexterity, but this one is just hilarious. I would prefer to think this was the intention, but I am not entirely sure it is.

“Suitable Flesh” bears a parting dedication to Stuart Gordon, who passed away in 2020 and is certainly missed, especially after watching this campy concoction, which revisits his beloved H.P. Lovecraft territory minus the late screen genre specialist’s knack for welding grotesque horror content to a black comedy tone.
There are some yuks (and yucks) to be had in his frequent writing collaborator Dennis Paoli’s very loose, gender-reversed riff on the cult fantasist’s lesser-regarded 1933 short story “The Thing on the Doorstep.” But director Joe Lynch haplessly plays much of this supernatural tale as an erotic thriller, the uncertainty of satirical intent leaving his actors looking silly. Releasing to limited theaters and streaming platforms on Oct. 27, it’s a movie best watched after a few libations, which might make more of the laughs play as deliberate.

Since Gloomhaven came along, with its ridiculous depth, 100+ missions and near-to-zero-luck gameplay, it’s been tough for other dungeon crawlers to make an impact. With most games in this genre relying on dice-rolling, random encounters and a load of other random factors, it’s tough to be taken seriously. However, when Eric Lang and Rob Daviau teamed up to bring us Cthulhu: Death May Die back in 2019, the outcome was destined to swing the dial back in favour of the classic dice and dungeons model.
Cthulhu: Death May Die has now been Kickstarted two or three times – with the latest round of crowdfunding set to begin fulfilment around December 2023. Sometimes it seems like Stephen King has done literally everything a person could do. As of this publication he has written over 70 books and over 200 short stories. He directed a movie where the Green Goblin was a killer truck possessed by a comet. He wrote an episode of "The X-Files." He did a cameo on "The Simpsons." Twice. He even did an "X-Men" comic book once.
So it probably comes as no surprise that Stephen King's work has been adapted into an episode of "The Twilight Zone." Indeed, the only things that are surprising about it is that it only happened once, and that hardly anyone has heard of it nowadays. But it's real. It's based on Stephen King's short story "Gramma," it was adapted by sci-fi luminary Harlan Ellison, it co-stars Piper Laurie from "Carrie," and it's part of the H.P. Lovecraft Cthulhu mythos.

Any conversation about Lovecraftian horror isn’t complete without addressing the man the genre itself is named after, and that’s a tough talk to have — putting it mildly. While all genres of horror have their fair share of baggage, nothing really compares to the baggage of H.P. Lovecraft’s personal beliefs.
Born in 1890, Lovecraft wrote 65 novels, short stories, and novellas before his premature death in 1937 due to cancer, and his writings eventually birthed an entire subgenre. The name Lovecraft is synonymous with a type of cosmically tinged horror that emphasizes the terror of the unknown, beings incomprehensible to the human mind, and the thin divide between sanity and insanity. These are potent themes that quickly spread beyond Lovecraft and his influential Cthulhu mythos and into other writers’ and storytellers’ works.
But this fear of the unknown that is so pivotal to Lovecraft and his work is easily traced back...

By the end of the third season of "Star Trek: Picard," the title character had been through quite a lot. He died and was resurrected in an android body. He traveled to alternate universe and was thrown back in time several centuries. He witnessed the opening of a portal into robot Cthulhu's dimension. He saw the Borg evolve into something benevolent. He reunited with Dr. Crusher (Gates McFadden) and discovered they had an adult son. So by the final scene of the series, when he and a group of old friends met in a bar for cocktails and a friendly round of poker, Picard had earned it.

Ahead of Insidious: The Red Door releasing in theaters next month, James Wan and Patrick Wilson took part in an Ask-Me-Anything session over on Reddit last week. During the chat, Wan and Wilson answered various questions from fans about the Insidious franchise and beyond, but one answer from Wan in particular really caught our attention.
When asked if he has any dream project that he hopes to someday bring to life, James Wan brought up The Call of Cthulhu, an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s classic short story.
Of particular note, it sounds like Wan has already been low-key toying with a potential adaptation of Lovecraft’s tale, which was first published in Weird Tales in February 1928.
Wan teases during the Reddit Ama chat, “My dream project, that I have been secretly cooking away on the down low for the last 5 years, is The Call of Cthulhu.”

This post contains spoilers for "The Boogeyman."
Don't look now, but I think there's a metaphor for grief loose in the house.
Rob Savage's new film "The Boogeyman," based on a 1973 short story by Stephen King, leans hard into a familiar trope of the current generation by focusing on a monster (the titular "man") who's quite clearly a symbol for grief and trauma. In the movie, the death of a family's matriarch leaves her husband (Chris Messina), teenage daughter (Sophie Thatcher), and younger daughter (Viven Lyra Blair) with a grey, lingering hurt. As they try to work their way through mourning, a mysterious creature begins appearing out of the shadows. The monster can imitate human voices and lure victims into closets where they will be rend to pieces. The creature has been traveling from house to house, drawn to places of sadness, eating children and driving adults to take their own lives.

The result is excellent once more, also because the second season takes a rather darker, more mature-oriented approach to the story.

With Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened arriving later this week, Frogwares has released the game’s launch trailer, which as you might expect, contains plenty of Lovecraft vibes to get Cthulhu fans excited.
Touted as a “full remake and substantial rewrite” of their 2006 title, Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened pits the titular Holmes and his faithful sidekick Dr. Watson against a nefarious cult that worships the eldritch god Cthulhu, and are attempting to bring about an ancient prophecy. What seems like a straightforward case of a missing person quickly spirals into a web of conspiracies.
The story is a creative re-imagining of what traumatic and sanity-breaking experiences the young detectives could have endured at this crucial point in their relationship. Memories, secrets, and scars that would go on to shape them into the famous yet flawed detective duo the world knows them for.
The game will take the detective duo across 4 locations – Victorian London,...

2022 saw the release of 45 new episodes of "Star Trek" -- the highest volume of "Star Trek" that audiences have been treated to since the 1990s heyday of the franchise. 1996 and 1998 it seems, still hold the record for Most Treks, as both years saw the airing of 54 one-hour "Star Trek" episodes between "Deep Space Nine" and "Voyager," as well as the theatrical releases of "Star Trek: First Contact" and "Star Trek: Insurrection," respectively. TV, of course, has changed dramatically in the age of streaming, and average TV seasons now run a mere 10 episodes rather than the old-world 26.
2022 certainly holds the record for greatest variety of "Star Trek," as five separate shows are now running concurrently. There was the conclusion of the fourth season of "Star Trek: Discovery," the entire second season of "Star Trek: Picard," the entire third season of "Star Trek: Lower Decks," the concluding end of the first season of "Star Trek: Prodigy,...

With The Rise of the Beast, (originally titled Devolution), producer Scott Jeffrey fills a noticeable hole in his output. He’s given us dinosaurs, dragons, mutated rats, bats, spiders, and even Cthulhu himself. But no killer gorillas, at least not until now.
Damien Smith is explaining Simon’s job to him. He doesn’t make them very clear, but we get the idea it involves analyzing data from experiments on various primates. But Simon has a secret, he, along with Elena, Faith, Andy and Pete (Peter Jeffries; The Area 51 Incident) are part of an animal rights group that’s planning to expose Darrow Corporation’s work. That means dodging some heavily armed soldiers to get footage of the animals they’re torturing in the name of science.

In “Glorious,” J.K. Simmons plays the voice of an ominous Lovecraftian god lurking behind the glory hole of a random roadside restroom. That’s practically all the pitch Shudder audiences need to sample this not-nearly-as-sick-as-it-sounds oddity from genre-movie superbrain Rebekah McKendry, whose expertise in all things horror outstrips her knowledge of the basics of men’s bathrooms — including what they look like and how dudes behave when they become aware that there is someone/thing heavy-breathing in the neighboring stall. Then again, getting creative with such logistics hasn’t impacted “Porky’s” place in film culture, so why should it be a deal breaker here?
It’s just that, even at 80 minutes, “Glorious” feels four times too long for what it is. Though the movie’s premise may seem juvenile, director Rebekah McKendry navigates by an inexplicable parallel-dimension sense of “good taste”: She makes it a point to avoid...

Wes is having a day that is anything but glorious. He’s fallen asleep at the wheel, nearly driven off the road. He’s gotten drunk at a rest area and burned most of the things he took with him when he left his previous life, and for good measure, his pants as well. Now he’s hungover and pantsless in a filthy public restroom. That’s when God starts talking to him.
Well, Ghat starts talking to him, and he claims to be a God. But whoever heard of a God hanging out at a glory hole? Certainly not Wes who promptly makes for the door. But Ghat is indeed a deity and he’s not going to let Wes leave until he hears him out,...

In case you haven’t heard, Jordan Peele has a new movie out this weekend, which is exciting. And while we can be reasonably sure that a huge chunk of the plot and premise of Nope won’t be revealed until you are sitting in your cinema seat, we already know it has a sinister cloud and, at some point, a flying saucer. So it’s not too much of leap to guess that aliens are going to be invading Earth again. When it comes to movies though, that’s kind of their thing…
If you are the pernickety, ruin-everyone-else’s-fun kind of science fiction fan, most alien invasion storylines present a bit of a problem: If you can build spaceships capable of carrying a military force large enough to subdue a planet, and transporting that force the vast interstellar distances between habitable worlds, well, you probably don’t really need to invade anywhere.

In-depth rock doc about the unmistakable legends of heavy metal and their outrageous antics will be best appreciated by their fans
One of the few acts who can legitimately thank Beavis and Butt-Head for making them famous (as opposed to merely cult), Gwar was, and still is, an American heavy metal act with punk roots who got started in the 1980s in Richmond, Virginia. They’re best known for performing in elaborate monster/alien costumes (mostly big headpieces and bare midriffs) and deploying lashings of fake bodily fluids and prosthetics in their act, such as a notorious massive codpiece called the Cuttlefish of Cthulhu that sprays “sperm” at the audience – and got them banned in North Carolina at one point.
That episode is one of many recounted in this in-depth oral history rock doc, a sturdily made work whose appeal will very much depend on viewers’ interest in the band in the first place.
