The Writers Guild of America is escalating its pressure on the Television Academy after the organization removed the outstanding writing for a variety series/special award from the Emmys telecast.
On Tuesday the union sent a letter from major variety series and specials hosts and a petition signed by more than 1,400 members to Television Academy chairman Cris Abrego, calling on the organization to reinstate the category in the awards ceremony primetime broadcast. Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Meyers, John Oliver, Jon Stewart, Amber Ruffin, Colin Jost and Michael Che were among the members signing on to the letter to Abrego, which stated that the decision “devalues their [writers’] work, and our series, by sidelining writers from being honored during the Emmys’ main telecast.”

"Bojack Horseman" is one of the best shows of all time about bad people. Its titular character, a washed-up, alcoholic celebrity horse (Will Arnett) whose solipsism knows no bounds, is written not as a flimsy caricature of a toxic celebrity, but as a beautifully, horrifyingly three-dimensional person. Bojack's many demons live uneasily alongside the better version of himself he's always so sure he's about to become. Yet as the series unfolds across six searingly satirical and deeply emotional seasons, it eventually becomes clear that no gesture or promise to change will fix everything he's chosen to break again and again.
The series asks and often answers tough questions about accountability and change. While it eventually dives deep into Bojack's traumatic family history and the psychological factors that have led to his worst bad decisions, the show never lets its humanizing elements serve as an excuse for the pain he's caused.

The "Twisted Metal" video games were truly unique for their era, bringing players into brutal vehicular combat with a variety of colorful characters to choose from. There wasn't ever particularly great continuity between the games, so each had its own unique story and reason for the Twisted Metal competition, but many of the characters returned again and again, allowing fans of the franchise to really develop their favorites. Of all of the characters in the games, from motorcycle-riding reaper Mr. Grimm to tank-driving serial killer Kane to Dragula-driving musician Rob Zombie, perhaps the most famous is the killer clown Sweet Tooth, who drives a tricked-out ice cream truck.
The upcoming "Twisted Metal" live-action series on Peacock looks like it's just as wild as its video game counterparts, and that means they needed a Sweet Tooth to match. The creepy killer clown is portrayed physically by wrestler Samoa Joe, with...

Creating a great TV finale is truly a work of art. Somehow a single episode is expected to provide closure to a story that fans have been dedicatedly following for years. It has to be satisfying but not too perfect, conclusive but not too cutesy, sad but not in a way that’s too self-serious. And while juggling all those contradictory extremes, it also has to stay true to the distinct tone of its universe.
With “Succession” and “Barry’s” finales on the horizon, it’s worthwhile to look back through the greats. From CBS stables to critically-acclaimed anime, here are some of TV’s best series finales that went above and beyond.
Bob Odenkirk as Jimmy McGill in “Better Call Saul.” (AMC)

Heading into “Better Call Saul’s” sixth season, no one thought that Gilligan and Peter Gould could top “Felina.” But, by god, they did it.

Day four of the writers strike and there’s no sign of slowing down for the writers marching in Hollywood and in New York.
Pete Davidson was supposed to be deep in rehearsals today for his hosting debut on Saturday Night Live, which was canceled after WGA went on strike on Tuesday as the guild could not reach a deal with the studios. Instead, he delivered free pizza to writers on the picket line at Broadway Stages.
“It’s for the writers,” he is heard saying, adding “no writers, no shows.”

The Writers Guild of America doesn’t want to strike, but it will if it has to. That’s the thrust of the guild’s latest video featuring WGA West board member and BoJack Horseman creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg discussing the history of gains the guild has made by standing firm at the bargaining table – and by going on strike if all else fails.
“I want to be very clear,” he says in the video posted the WGA website Tuesday. “A strike is not a guaranteed outcome for this year’s negotiation. And we do not want one. What we want is to be paid fairly for creating a product that earns massive profits for the companies. And we want protections that allow us to build a stable career and a stable life.”
The studios, he said, “would love to paint us as irrational for wanting these most basic of things.

France’s Mediawan has continued its acquisitions spree by acquiring Submarine, the international producer behind Richard Linklater’s animated film Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood.
The deal, financial terms of which were not disclosed, is for a majority stake in the company, which has offices in Amsterdam, London and L.A.
Mediawan, which last year bought Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment and has been expanding internationally, claimed the Submarine acquisition builds its “House of Talent” credentials. It is led by CEO Pierre-Antoine Capton, who struck a $107M co-development and financing deal with private equity Entourage Ventures earlier this year that Mediawan Rights boss Valerie Vleeschhouwer recently outlined in more detail in an interview with Deadline.

If you’re just starting The Simpsons now, you have 742 episodes to get through. Make that 743 as of tonight. Fortunately, they’re all available on Disney+, or airing randomly on weeknights in syndication. Let’s say you have seen all 700+ episodes and you’re looking for something else to watch. "Undone" is impressive for many reasons, but its ability to combine wildly different genres might be the biggest. On the one hand, there's the stark depiction of listless 20-year-old Alma Winograd-Diaz (Rosa Salazar) and her family drama, which makes the show so emotionally affecting. On the other, there's the wild time and space-bending sci-fi adventure featuring the ghost of her late father, Jacob Winograd (Bob Odenkirk). In the show's first season, after a car accident gives Alma the ability to traverse space and time, she embarks on a multi-dimensional journey to try to solve the mystery of her father's death.
To help pull off such an ambitiously innovative project, "BoJack Horseman" alums Raphael Bob-Waksberg and Kate Purdy used rotoscoping — an animation style created by tracing over real footage. This same technique was used by Richard Linklater in his movies "Waking Life" and "A Scanner Darkly," and was chosen for "Undone" by Dutch animator Hisko Hulsing,...

Each December, acclaimed television series from the previous 12 months are discussed in the form of “best of...” lists. In these, the same shows are usually bandied around – some deserving (Better Call Saul), others not so (we won’t name names).
Often, though, several key titles are omitted – not because they aren’t any good, but because they haven’t been widely seen. This is understandable; after all, there’s an increasing amount of television to wade through every week.
Perhaps this is why these lists are skewed towards the high-profile releases – the ones that happen to be right there when people browse Netflix or whichever streaming service they have. But the fact remains, there’s a goldmine of under-the-radar shows out there to discover.
In the past year, all of the below deserved more love.

BoJack Horseman creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg and Abbott Elementary executive producer Justin Halpern are among the eight Writers Guild of America West members just elected to its board of directors.
Incumbents Travis Donnelly, Ashley Gable, Eric Haywood and Deric A. Hughes won re-election to the board in the 2022 board election, while Bob-Waksberg, Halpern, Angelina Burnett and John Rogers were elected as additional members, the union announced on Tuesday. Seventeen WGA members were originally nominated to run in the election, for which voting took place between August 31 and Sept. 20.
In their candidacy platforms, most of the writers that won seats in Tuesday’s election said that, if elected, they would prioritize gaining more compensation — and especially more fulsome streaming residuals — from streaming platforms. Another popular theme of their platforms was ending so-called “mini-rooms,” or small writers’ rooms convened during the development process for a TV series.

Eight WGA West members have been elected to the guild’s board of directors in a race that foreshadowed a possible writers strike next year.
Former board member Angelina Burnett was the top vote-getter, with 1,696 votes, followed by incumbents Ashley Gable, Deric A. Hughes, Eric Haywood and Travis Donnelly. Also elected were Raphael Bob-Waksberg, John Rogers and Justin Halpern.
A total of 2,527 valid ballots were cast.
The WGA’s current contract doesn’t expire until May 1, but many of the 17 candidates made it clear that they’re prepared to strike if the guild can’t get a fair deal at the bargaining table. In their campaign statements, they outlined a wide range of issues that need to be addressed in the next contract, including higher minimum pay rates, bigger streaming residuals, more secure pension and health benefits, greater equity and inclusion, the elimination of free work, and the curbing of mini-rooms,...

Most fans know BoJack Horseman for its wacky animal cast, quippy puns, and moving exploration of mental illness. But as creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg once told Variety, BoJack Horseman is also a series centered on “showbiz satire.” A crucial element of the critically beloved hit is how its storylines critique the entertainment industry’s seedy underbelly.
BoJack Horseman season 2 used its Bill Cosby-like arc to remind audiences how often Hollywood sweeps sexual assault allegations under the rug. Sarah Lynn (Kristen Schaal) embodied the role of the ill-fated child star – tragically depicting how the pressures, unrealistic demands, and ambition of stardom can lead to substance abuse and death. BoJack (Will Arnett) illustrated how easily creative executives turn a blind eye toward a star’s untreated trauma if they’re a cash-horse for a network.
On the surface, Mr. Peanutbutter (Paul F. Tompkins) seems to be one of the only well-adjusted characters in L.

‘Undone’ Creators on the Incredible Ingenuity Required for Season 2 — and Why They’re Ready for More
When an “Undone” viewer stops to consider the challenges that go into creating Prime Video’s acclaimed family drama — which uses rotoscope animation as part of an expansive artistic palette — plenty of awe-inspiring examples spring to mind. Perhaps they think of the rapid time shifts, when Alma (Rosa Salazar) moves backward and forward in the blink of an eye, searching the past and present for clues about her father’s death. Or maybe it’s when rooms, buildings, and people evaporate as Jacob (Bob Odenkirk) teaches her how to alter reality — and maybe bring him back from the dead — through time travel. In Season 2, many may point to the moving, semi-traversable M.C. Escher painting that appears in later episodes, as a key character’s entire life is embodied within gravity-defying stairways, rooms, and venues, while the family works to mend old wounds by (literally) navigating their ancestor’s history.

After dealing with her own mental health, Kate Purdy decided to channel her experiences through animation for Amazon Prime’s Undone. Along with fellow co-creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg, Purdy created a story of generational trauma and redemption.
Undone follows Alma (Rosa Salazar), a woman who survives a near-fatal car crash and discovers she has the ability to manipulate time and reality. Season 1 focuses on Alma trying to find the truth behind her father Jacob’s (Bob Odenkirk) death and save him. Season 2 takes place in a new timeline after she succeeds, and now finds that her sister Becca (Angelique Cabral) has a similar ability. Together they try to help their mother Camila (Constance Marie) who is hiding something from them.
Deadline: Where did the idea for Undone come from?

Netflix’s Big Mouth spinoff sees the animated universe’s emotional monsters in a workplace setting as they manage the human “clients” to which they’re assigned. While Big Mouth centers on the nightmares of puberty, Human Resources tackles the complete human life span from birth to death — and this scene delves into the latter, with Amir and daughter Natalie facing the loss of Amir’s mother, Yara. Also at Yara’s deathbed is her lovebug Walter, the personification of that emotion. Showrunner Kelly Galuska notes how the scene balances the emotional weight and the irreverent comedy at the show’s core.

Rotoscope animation is a rare technique on television, and a rare one to see used as well as it is in Prime Video’s “Undone.”
Created by Kate Purdy and Raphael Bob-Waksberg, the series is shot in live-action on green screen soundstages, with the footage animated by the companies Submarine and Minnow Mountain. The result is a formally inventive series that uses dreamlike, hazy animated imagery to tell the slippery story of Alma (Rosa Salazar) as she confronts her memories of her father’s death by leaping through time to prevent it.
For the show’s recent second season, the animation of “Undone” gets even more ambitious, as the narrative sees Alma and her sister Becca (Angelique Cabral) travel into the memories and traumatic pasts of their father Jacob (Bob Odenkirk), mother Camila (Constance Marie) and eventually their grandmother Geraldine (Holley Fain). The further they travel through time, the more the animation distorts reality,...

The first season of "Undone" took big swings that paid off in spades. The show from "BoJack Horseman" alums Raphael Bob-Waksberg and Kate Purdy shattered the mold of conventional TV storytelling and delivered an utterly unique show centered on achingly relatable and believable characters. The show and those characters — the Winograd-Diaz family — are back for a second season. And although "Undone" is different than any other show out there, it still faces the daunting question of any second season or sequel — how can the creators tell another story that builds on the events of the first while bringing something new...

When “Undone” premiered on Amazon Prime in 2019, it was like nothing else on television, combining rotoscope animation with bold nonlinear storytelling and some stunning acting performances. The complex animation style has led to a long delay between seasons, but later this month, fans will be treated to a new season. Today, Amazon gave fans at WonderCon their first look at Season 2, dropping a trailer for the eight new episodes that are scheduled to stream on April 29.
“Undone” was created by Kate Purdy and “BoJack Horseman” creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg, and stars Rosa Salazar, Angelique Cabral, Constance Marie, and Bob Odenkirk. Season 1 told the story of a woman who experiences a car crash that dramatically alters her relationship with time. She continues to relive the car crash in a myriad of ways, but also begins to reconnect with her dead father.

Yesterday, "Bojack Horseman" creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg spoke up for a good cause, with hilarious results. Initially, the showrunner tweeted a thought about Dave Chappelle's controversial Netflix deal. "Still mystified that apparently Dave Chappelle's deal is that he says whatever he wants and Netflix just has to air it, unedited," he tweeted.
Bob-Waksberg asked whether it was normal for comedians to get carte blanche control over their final product, citing a time Netflix pushed back against a scene Bob-Waksberg himself wrote about David Fincher in the first season of "Bojack Horseman."

‘BoJack’ Creator Reveals the David Fincher Joke That Netflix Cut Over Fear of Upsetting the Director
“BoJack Horseman” creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg took to social media this week to reveal a David Fincher joke that he had to cut from his acclaimed Netflix animated series because the streaming giant feared it would upset the “Fight Club” and “Mank” filmmaker. It’s important to remember that Fincher helped bring Netflix into the original content era as an executive producer on “House of Cards,” the first series produced for Netflix, and also directed the first two episodes of the show’s inaugural season. By the time “BoJack” premiered in August 2014, “House of Cards” was already two seasons into its run.
“Still mystified that apparently Dave Chapelle’s deal is that he says whatever he wants and Netflix just has to air it, unedited. Is that normal, for comedians?” Bob-Waksberg asked on Twitter. “Because Netflix once asked me to change a joke because they were worried it might upset David Fincher.

Raphael Bob-Waksberg, the creator of Netflix show BoJack Horseman, has addressed the recent Dave Chappelle controversy, posting on Twitter that he doesn’t understand the streamer’s policy of airing Chapelle’s specials unedited.
Bob-Waksberg pointed to a particular scene from his hit animated series that Netflix asked to be removed “because they were worried it might upset David Fincher”.

Seven years ago, Lisa Hanawalt published a comic on Hazlitt Magazine’s website depicting an anthropomorphic, topless toucan belly-up on the floor of her apartment trimming her toenails, clippings flying into the air. “This is Tuca. She’s a toucan. She lives in the city,” the first panel reads. It was the germ of an idea that would become Tuca & Bertie, Hanawalt’s joyously surreal yet painfully real cartoon about female friendship, getting by in the big city, overcoming trauma, and, yes, bird people.

The second episode of “Tuca and Bertie’s” second season starts with a simple promise. On their way to her would-be sister-in-law’s bachelorette party, Bertie (Ali Wong) tells Tuca (Tiffany Haddish) how worried she is about fitting in with so many women she doesn’t know. Tuca, always the life of the party, isn’t worried about that, but she is a bit concerned that her sobriety will be a buzzkill. So the two best bird-friends make an agreement: Bertie won’t drink, in solidarity with Tuca, and Tuca won’t leave Bertie by herself, alone with their judgmental party-goers.
To say that promise gets tested isn’t much of a spoiler. After all, “Tuca and Bertie” — Adult Swim’s animated comedy from creator Lisa Hanawalt — is a sitcom, and sitcoms are built on simple premises (or promises) that result in extreme hijinks (and hilarity). Andy Samberg will star in and produce an untitled sci-fi and comedy that Apple has acquired in a bidding war and that also has an impressive array of producers attached, including Ben Stiller and Noah Hawley, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
Andy Siara, who wrote Samberg’s “Palm Springs” from 2020, will write the screenplay, which is based on an original idea by “Bojack Horseman” creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg.
The logline is being kept under wraps, and the film is currently in development. No director is attached, but the team hopes to find a director in the coming months.
Samberg and Bob-Waksberg will produce, as will Hawley and Dan Seligmann for 26 Keys, Stiller and Nicky Weinstock for Red Hour. Jackie Cohn and Siara will executive produce.
Samberg and Siara’s “Palm Springs” fetched a record sale at Sundance last year and was one of Hulu’s most-watched films in its history.
