It’s a strange bit of cosmic interference that brings the Empire State DVD and the Pain & Gain home release to stores so close to each other. Both are films based on true events. Both document crimes that, from the outside, seemed to the world like the sort of things that must have involved criminal masterminds, but actually involve idiots who saw a ball on the ground and ran with it. And, both star Dwayne Johnson. Actually, though Empire State heavily bills Dwayne Johnson and Emma Roberts, neither are really more than minor support.
Chris Potamitis (Liam Hemsworth) is just an average guy trying to get by, but he doesn’t travel in the best circles, and his dad works menial labor for a small-time hood, which doesn’t help. Worse, his longtime friend Eddie (Michael Angarano) is a constant trouble magnet, and Chris is the sort of guy who...

Dito Montiel is a man of many talents. He’s written everything from books to screenplays, played in a band for many years, and of course, directs films. His newest movie, Empire State, features Dwayne Johnson and Liam Hemsworth, and tells the story of Chris Potamitis, a regular guy from Queens NY who may very well have gotten away with stealing $15 million.
Dito was kind enough to talk with us for a bit, and our conversation revealed a lot about Chris’s real-life counterpart, the ridiculousness of the robbery itself, and how you go about getting the likes of The Rock and Robin Williams in your films. Check it out below!
So I watched the film of course, Empire State, and possibly the most notable thing about it, at least at face value, is that it’s based on true events. So I was wondering in terms of characters, for example Chris and Eddie,...

There’s a very good chance that you’ve seen Empire State already. Perhaps not with these characters, but I’m willing to bet you’ve seen a number of heist films that are exactly like it and which tell the story with more flair and excitement. Forget that this is supposedly based on a true story (by now you should be well aware of what that really means). When that story has already been seen in countless films, that should immediately make the filmmakers ask themselves “Do we really need to tell it again, just with different characters?” Apparently they thought they had something great on their hands, but the studio saw exactly what was happening and, not deeming it worthy of a theatrical release, decided to dump it straight to Blu-Ray and DVD. At least somebody had an objective viewpoint of the project.

Empire State is based on the true story of one of the biggest heists in U.S. history, and what better way to celebrate today.s big VOD release for the film than to hear from one of the guys originally behind the big heist? In the exclusive clip, heist master Chris Potamitis.one of the real men behind the 1982 crime.explains how he first got the job at the Empire State security firm, and how it just so happened that he grew nosy while working there. Empire State was directed by Dito Montiel, the man behind the film A Guide To Recognizing your Saints. His last film, The Son of No One didn.t do so well theatrically, and Lionsgate Home Entertainment opted to put Empire State on a VOD release schedule, with a Blu-ray and DVD release following next Tuesday, September 3. Just because the film is hitting VOD...

I’ve never been a particularly big fan of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. He’s been in a couple of decent projects such as Get Smart, and even appeared in an episode of Star Trek: Voyager once. Aside from that, he pretty much seems to make the same kind of movie over and over, a la Jason Statham, which has lead to him starring in projects like G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Snitch, Doom, and the last couple of Fast & Furious films. I guess when a guy like him finds a niche that works for the target audience, he doesn’t want to risk going outside of it all that often.
The trailer for his latest project, Empire State, recently dropped and there’s not much more to say about it other than that it looks like more of the same. The official synopsis reads as follows:
After failing to get into the police academy,...

The first trailer for Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson's new police drama Empire State has been released. I like cop and heist films, and this one looks ok. There's a reason it's not getting a theatrical release. The movie also stars Liam Hemsworth, Emma Roberts, Nikki Reed, Michael Angarano, and James Ransone.
Johnson is a pretty heavy hitter at the box office, so interesting to see that Lionsgate isn't going to give it a theatrical release. Perhaps because it looks like Hemsworth gives a poor acting performance? I'm convinced the guy can't carry a movie. Here's the story summary:

Lionsgate has announced the September 3 release of Empire State on DVD and Blu-ray, which is a bit of a surprise considering it stars the billion dollar man, Dwayne Johnson. Johnson has had a film in the top ten at the box office ever since February 24 of this year when Snitch was released. He followed that up with G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Pain and Gain and most recently Fast & Furious 6. The four films have brought in over $1 billion at the worldwide box office this year, but his next film will skip the theater and go straight to Best Buy. Interestingly enough, the names don't stop there, Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games), Emma Roberts and Nikki Reed (The Twilight Saga franchise) also star with Dito Montiel (Fighting) directing. The film is based on the true story and centers on Chris Potamitis (Hemsworth), a security guard for the Empire State Armored Truck Company...

Every now and then a film with a promising cast just doesn't hit the mark and is relegate to straight-to-dvd hell. Such is the case with Empire State, which unfortunately looks like a dull thriller, and maybe a low point for the stellar year Dwayne Johnson is having in 2013. In the film from Dito Montiel (A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints), an armored truck security guard (Liam Hemsowrth) is suspected of assisting in a robbery of one of their vehicles. In reality, his troublemaking friends (led by Michael Angarano) are behind the heist, and an NYPD detective (Johnson) is on their trail. We wish this was more exciting. Watch? Here's the first trailer for Dito Montiel's Empire State, from Grindstone Entertainment: Empire State is directed by Dito Montiel (A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints) and written by Adam Mazer (Breach, You Don't Know Jack). After failing to get into the police academy,...
