Galeca: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics unveiled nominations for their 2nd annual Dorian Theater Awards on Monday, March 13. Galeca’s 39-member theater wing decided this season’s crop of nominees, which honor the best of Broadway and Off-Broadway.
The nominations list is dominated by the current revival of “Merrily We Roll Along” and new play “Stereophonic.” Both productions netted six nominations a piece. In the case of “Merrily,” that tally includes bids for its Tony-nominated trio of stars: Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez, and Daniel Radcliffe. “Stereophonic” managed one better with four members of its cast nominated in the same featured performance category: Will Brill, Eli Gelb, Tom Pecinka, and Sarah Pidgeon. The individual acting races at the Dorian Awards are gender neutral.
The Best Broadway Musical category features Tony Award nominees “Hell’s Kitchen,” “Illinoise,” “The Outsiders,” and “Suffs,” along with the closed David Byrne tuner “Here Lies Love” and soon-to-be closing “Lempicka.

Jenelle Evans and David Eason might be headed for divorce, but the former couple seems busy trying to get each other’s attention. The former Teen Mom 2 star recently took to social media to show off a bonfire that included keepsakes from her marriage. Evans isn’t the only one trying to get some attention, though. Eason has spent the last several weeks talking about Evans on TikTok. While the drama is heating up, critics aren’t convinced the couple’s separation will end in divorce.

A new musical, a musical revival and a new play with music will dominate the 2024 Tony Awards nominations, according to our official odds in 17 of the 26 categories. The latest revival of the classic John Kander and Fred Ebb musical “Cabaret,” fresh off a smash run on the West End, and the new musical “Hell’s Kitchen” that is loosely based on the life of Alicia Keys and her music will both net at least seven nominations. New works “Days of Wine and Roses,” “Here Lies Love” and “Suffs” and the starry revival of Stephen Sondheim‘s notorious flop “Merrily We Roll Along” will also earn substantial nominations tallies.
Playwright David Adjmi‘s “Stereophonic” will lead this year’s crop of plays and play revivals with at least five nominations. Right behind are five other works – two new shows and three revivals – that will all tie at least four nominations apiece,...

Whether or not the climate activists who interrupted a critics’ preview of Broadway’s An Enemy of the People last week persuasively made their “water’s coming for us all” message isn’t for me to say, but I will note that the disruption spoke very well for this production.
Amy Herzog’s adaptation of Ibsen’s 1882 classic about a Norwegian town doctor deemed “an enemy of the people” for his truth-telling about an environmental health hazard is smart, sharp and relevant. The science vs. commerce debate is uncannily current, as Herzog thoughtfully makes clear. Ibsen created an archetypal situation here — I’d be willing to bet a trip to the beach that Peter Benchley was more than a little familiar with Enemy when he created that spineless, shark-denying mayor of Jaws, and if the activists at last week’s show hadn’t already seen a performance of this production,...

After a health issue sent her to the hospital and led her to drop out of a Broadway revival of Doubt: A Parable, Tyne Daly is on the rebound. “On behalf of the cast and crew of Doubt, and the entire Roundabout [Theatre Company] family, we are elated that Tyne is on the mend and on her way to a full recovery,” Scott Ellis, director of the production and Roundabout’s interim artistic director, told People on Friday. Daly was slated to play Sister Aloysius in this production of the John Patrick Shanley play, but an undisclosed health issue resulted in her hospitalization on February 2, according to People. The 77-year-old “did her invited dress [rehearsal] performance and then was hospitalized” a source told the magazine. That day’s preview performance was canceled, and Isabel Keating temporarily filled Daly’s part for the preview the following day, as Roundabout said in a press release...

Don’t expect a reunion tour from No Doubt after their special performance at Coachella 2024 in April.
In a new Billboard report breaking down the festival’s successful bookings of No Doubt and Sublime reunions, a source close to No Doubt singer Gwen Stefani was cited as saying “not to expect a major No Doubt tour.” Apparently, such a tour would conflict with Stefani’s plans for the rest of 2024 to promote upcoming solo music slated for this summer.
Indeed, Stefani has since been announced as a headliner for the inaugural Minnesota Yacht Club festival (get tickets here) taking place in July and as part of the lineup for the R&b and hip-hop festival Lovers & Friends (get tickets here), which goes down in Las Vegas on March 4th. She also tops the lineup for February’s Cali Vibes Music Festival (get tickets here).

Early promotional efforts for Kobi Libii’s feature film debut “The American Society of Magical Negroes” failed miserably with Black social media due to a miscommunication of the film’s intent. At Sundance, where the film had its world premiere on Friday, invited a far more enthusiastic response.
The film is inspired by the “magical negro” trope, a Hollywood pattern of centering Black characters who cater to white characters originally credited to Spike Lee back in 2001. “The American Society of Magical Negroes” attempts to probe today’s race relations, highlighting the invisibility many people of color experience in the American workplace as well as other challenges.
There is a lot to like about Libii’s effort, particularly with the prolific Justice Smith leading the cast. Veteran comedic actor David Alan Grier, as well as Nicole Byer, An-Li Bogan, and Drew Tarver lend noteworthy assists.

Actor Amy Adams felt very fortunate collaborating with late Capote star Philip Seymour Hoffman. But at one point Adams couldn’t get over being starstruck by her Doubt co-star.

Adams has worked with Hoffman a few times in her career. She first worked with the veteran actor in the movie Doubt, which saw her teaming up with several other established actors. Meryl Streep and Viola Davis were just two of the highly revered performers she’d end up sharing the screen with. Still, Adams took home an experience with Hoffman that she’s rarely had even with other longtime actors.

Portugal. The Man have recruited an unlikely guest, the metal wiz Mizmor, to do a reworking of their song “Doubt,” which originally appeared on their June 2023 album Chris Black Changed My Life.
While Mizmor’s black metal definitely seems like a far cry from Portugal. The Man’s retro-inspired pop-rock, the two acts actually do have a personal connection: “My brother, Ryan, used to play in Portugal. The Man, and I was the kid brother who played heavy music,” Mizmor says in a press release. “Instead of stripping everything away and rebuilding from the ground up, like many remixes do, I was able to almost directly adapt the chords into my style.”
Complete with an extra doom-y outro that cleverly weaves in vocals from Ptm’s own Zoe Manville, Mizmor’s version of “Doubt” isn’t just a remix — it’s a whole new beast. Watch the equally-harrowing music video below.

The cover was recorded specifically for the Showtime series. Welch provided the following statement to Deadline: “I’m such a huge fan of Yellowjackets and this era of music, and this song especially had a huge impact on me growing up, so I was thrilled to be asked to interpret it in a deeply unsettling way for the show. We tried to really add some horror elements to this iconic song to fit the tone of the show.

In the weeks since its premiere, “Wednesday” — from co-creators Alfred Gough, Miles Millar, and executive producer Tim Burton — has become Netflix’s third most popular English-language series.
Titular star Jenna Ortega’s self-choreographed dance sequence to the Cramps’ 1981 single “Goo Goo Muck” has also won its spooky victories. Ortega’s gothic dance scene has gone viral on social media platforms like TikTok with imitators in braided pigtails. A fan-made TikTok video dance to Lady Gaga’s “Bloody Mary” has resulted in Gaga’s 2011 song jumping up the music streaming charts, and “Goo Goo Muck” has seen an increase in its Spotify streams by 9.500 since “Wednesday” debuted.
Along with noting how Ortega made the Cramps’ menacing brand of rockabilly her own, credit series music supervisors Jen Malone and Nicole Weisberg from Black & White Music for giving “Goo Goo Muck” new life.

Reasonable Doubt begins in outrageously dramatic fashion, with protagonist Jax Stewart (Emayatzy Corinealdi) tied to a chair and pleading for her life at the barrel of a gun. The episode that follows continues along a similarly soapy vein: After rewinding six months, the show introduces a trio of love interests for Jax to play with and a splashy murder to untangle, setting us up for a season of steamy trysts and rug-pulling reveals.
But anyone who’s suffered through a mediocre thriller knows that bombshell twists alone aren’t enough to hook an audience if the people onscreen otherwise fall flat.
