Just two years after winning a Best TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actor Emmy for “Mare of Easttown,” Evan Peters currently has a strong shot at conquering the corresponding lead category as the star of “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.” By succeeding on this outing, he would not only maintain his perfect acting Emmys record, but would also follow Ed Flanders as the second recipient of both possible limited program performance prizes.
Given the overall strength of this year’s Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor lineup, Peters’s potential win won’t come easily, if at all. The only other previous Emmy nominee in the mix is Kumail Nanjiani (“Welcome to Chippendales”), with most of the slots being filled by well-known first-timers Taron Egerton (“Black Bird”), Daniel Radcliffe (“Weird: The Al Yankovic Story”), Michael Shannon (“George & Tammy”), and Steven Yeun (“Beef”).

This year’s first-round Primetime Emmy nominations ballot includes a total of 51 Best Limited Series hopefuls. This is down from 2022’s unusually high total of 61, yet still much higher than 2021’s 37, 2020’s 41, and 2019’s 35.
All 20,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 26 to cast their 2023 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for programs. Unlike the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally. After six years of not having to limit their choices in any categories, members’ selections can now not be greater than the number of eventual nominations for a given award, which, in this case, will be five.
Unlike comedy and drama series, which simply appear on the ballot by name, the limited series submissions include plot descriptions and cast lists. Which of the shows listed below do you think will land in the final lineup on...

This story about Apple TV+’s Black Bird” and Paul Walter Hauser first appeared in the Limited Series/Movies issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
It’s been nearly a year since Dennis Lehane’s “Black Bird” premiered on Apple TV+, and viewers are still buzzing over its star Paul Walter Hauser’s Critics Choice and Golden Globe award-winning performance as real-world serial killer Larry Hall.
Icily textured and eerily unnerving, his portrayal of the notorious Civil War reenactor-turned-murderer — one who could be responsible for as many as 50 young women’s disappearances, per some authorities’ estimates — is more slow-boiling and menacing than mustache-twirling. Hauser, buoyed by Lehane’s script, also telegraphs an internal anguish that echoes behavior up to the present day, seen in the many violent, disenfranchised, often white men making headlines, from Jan. 6 to the mass shooting of the week.

Taron Egerton, the guest on this week’s episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, is one of the top young stars in Hollywood. A British-born Welsh actor who burst onto the scene playing a juvenile delinquent turned secret agent’s protege in the 2015 film Kingsman: The Secret Service, he shot onto the A-list with his portrayal of Elton John in the 2019 film Rocketman, for which he won a Golden Globe and was nominated for best actor SAG and BAFTA awards and a Grammy. In 2022, his performance in the Apple TV+ limited series Black Bird as Jimmy Keene, a drug dealer offered a chance to be let out of prison early if he can extract from a serial killer the location of the latter’s victims, has already brought him Golden Globe and SAG Award noms and is poised to bring him an Emmy nom, too.

In partnership with Apple TV+, for this edition, we look at how the editing, cinematography, and sound created the pulsing drama “Black Bird.”
Adapted from the book “In with the Devil” by James Keene and Hillel Levin, the Apple TV+ limited series “Black Bird” shines a disturbing light on murderer, rapist, and suspected serial killer Larry Hall, who preyed on girls and women during the 1980s and ‘90s. With DGA voting underway, clear frontrunners emerge. There are past nominees whose work on ongoing series merits recognition once more, like Bill Hader with “Barry,” Lucia Aniello for “Hacks,” or Donald Glover with “Atlanta”. In contrast to the way that their incarcerated characters in the tense Apple TV+ miniseries Black Bird circle one another over the course of several episodes, warily testing and probing in a cat-and-mouse game to determine just how much trust one can place in the other, Paul Walter Hauser and Taron Egerton recognized from the outset that they were in deep together.

Exclusive: Taron Egerton and the creators behind Apple TV+’s lauded drama Black Bird are re-teaming on crime series Firebug, inspired by events surrounding notorious California arsonist John Leonard Orr.
Black Bird creator Dennis Lehane, star and executive producer Taron Egerton, and executive producers Richard Plepler, Kary Antholis, Bradley Thomas and Imperative Entertainment’s Dan Friedkin will re-team on the Apple Original series.
Written by Lehane and inspired by true events, Firebug will follow a troubled detective and an enigmatic arson investigator (played by Rocketman star Egerton) as they pursue the trails of two serial arsonists.
Former American firefighter Orr was an arson investigator for the Glendale Fire Department in Southern California. Initially hired to understand and track down cases of arson, he became a convicted serial arsonist himself. He was found to be the cause of a spate of high-profile fires across California in the 80s and 90s that...

It has been quite the year for the streaming services. Fresh from the foothold that Covid allowed them to gain, 2022 seemed to be the most important year for streaming so far. In this excellent roundup of stats, facts and figures, ExpressVPN reveals which shows were the most popular each month, and how several big hitters may have changed the game forever.
As of right now Netflix holds the crown (and The Crown) of Top Streaming Service, and while many of its biggest hits are now firmly in franchise territory, it is the new movies and shows that bring in the essential new subscribers.
Thus, Squid Game, the ill-thought out but well received Dahmer, and the recent favourite The Watcher, have all proved that Netflix’s eye is firmly on building up new fans as well as look for the new Tiger King or Bridgerton. It isn’t as easy as...

"Black Bird" is one of the most intense and finely crafted true crime stories of the year. The series made by "Mystic River" writer Dennis Lehane has a lot going for it, from subtle scripts that ratchet up the intensity of the serial killer-centric story without ever feeling exploitative, to explosively great performances from Taron Egerton and Paul Walter Hauser. Egerton's cocky criminal Jimmy Keene is countered at every step by the man he's supposed to be talking into a confession in prison, alleged serial killer Larry Hall (Hauser). The pair's dynamic is anything but simple, and the series lets it unfold steadily across its six compelling episodes.
The Apple TV+ series also features the last performance from Ray Liotta, who, as Jimmy's sick father, motivates him to take a deal as a federal informant purposely placed in prison alongside Hall. The whole series sounds like a case of truth being stranger than fiction,...

There are a lot of different techniques and strategies on which actor Paul Walter Hauser leaned to prepare for his transformative turn as (suspected) real-life serial killer Larry Hall on the Apple TV+ miniseries “Black Bird.” But chief among them, the actor divulges in a recent webchat with Gold Derby, was “people-watching” (watch the full exclusive video interview above).
“I think some of the best stuff that I’ve tried to do or that people have said they liked — I’m ripping it from somebody I saw at the airport, some dude I stood next to at a urinal, or literally [fellow actor] Vincent D’Onofrio,” admits Hauser. “To play [Hall], I studied D’Onofrio in ‘Full Metal Jacket.’ There were just a couple of things I aped. One of them is that kind of Kubrick stare, the famous long, soulless, soul-being-sucked-out stare.”

When Natalie Kingston was setting up how she was going to photograph the limited series, “Black Bird,” she found a specific piece of inspiration for what look the show would have. “The crux of my visual inspiration was from the photographer, Gordon Parks, and this 1957 photo essay he did called ‘The Atmosphere of Crime,’” she tells Gold Derby during our Meet the Experts: TV Cinematographers panel (watch the exclusive video interview above).
Kingston remembers how visceral the photos were in using natural light but also having a moody and cinematic feel to them. “That really spoke to me. You could just feel the texture almost in these photos. There was this pastel color palette that I really responded to that I thought could be an interesting visual juxtaposition for the tone and the themes that we were exploring in ‘Black Bird.’”

Watching “Black Bird” over the last six weeks has been like watching a MasterClass in acting, writing, and toxic masculinity. It’s that last element that was specifically why author and series creator Dennis Lehane wanted to tackle the series in the first place. “I said, I would do this story if I could make it about misogyny. I would do the story if I could make it about the male gaze,” Lehane told IndieWire via Zoom. And the series has certainly done that, crafting a brutal tale about a serial killer, expertly played by Paul Walter Hauser, and the cocky drug dealer turned informant (Taron Egerton) intent on bringing him down.
The show has always been about the dynamic between Hauser’s Larry Hall and Egerton’s Jimmy Keene as they try to suss out each other’s motivations. But with the finale, “You Promised,” Jimmy has to get...

(Warning: This “Black Bird” post features spoilers for the show’s finale.)
Audiences and critics have been hooked on the Apple TV+ series “Black Bird,” which wraps its limited run this Friday on the streamer.
Across its first five episodes, the six-episode series has been driven by suspense and an increasingly heightened intensity as Jimmy Keene (Taron Egerton), a convicted drug supplier, attempts to lessen his jail term by befriending and eliciting a confession from Larry Hall (Paul Walter Hauser), a suspected serial killer just days away from getting out on a technicality.
In the finale, Hauser gave a chilling performance as Larry, as he finally confessed to Jimmy he’d committed nearly two dozen murders. For once, Jimmy couldn’t hold back his real feelings in front of Larry, telling him he was sick and would lose his appeal, prompting a ferocious outburst from the disturbed man who thought Jimmy a friend.

There’s a famous quote attributed to Edmund Burke that says, “all it takes for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.” It’s a quote that kept popping up in my mind while watching “Black Bird’s” finale, “You Promised,” because we see good men allowing evil to continue for reasons that seem sensible to them. But we also have a formerly bad man trying to do something, and, boy, is Jimmy Keene trying to save the day.
“You Promised” had a high bar to clear, especially after last week’s emotionally devastating episode, “Where I Lie.” The finale might feel a bit lackluster for some, especially if you’ve already Googled where the real-life figures ended up. But, as it plays out, “You Promised” lives up to the show’s own promise of tackling the big questions with regards to misogyny, as opposed to telling an A to B story.

Spoiler Alert: The following story contains details from Friday’s Black Bird series finale.
When Apple TV+’s six-episode psychological thriller Black Bird reached its conclusion on Friday, one of the criminals at its center was redeemed—the other, condemned.
The episode titled “You Promised” finds drug dealer turned FBI informant Jimmy Keene (Taron Egerton) getting increasingly aggressive, in his quest to get answers out of Larry Hall (Paul Walter Hauser)—the serial confessor revealed to be a serial killer, who won’t reveal where his bodies are buried.
In a bid to get home to his ailing father Big Jim (Ray Liotta), who in this episode is seen suffering a stroke, Jimmy looks to use Larry’s ego against him via a bit of reverse psychology. Larry, he says, is a liar—a teller of tall tales full of rapes and murders that he hasn’t, in fact, committed.

Taron Egerton knows about fame — especially after the attention he received for his award-winning work as Elton John in 2019’s “Rocketman.” But Egerton never felt as popular as he did on July 23 when Britney Spears posted videos on her Instagram of them together in London.
“I felt very, very, very famous for a second,” Egerton tells me on this week’s “Just for Variety” podcast, crediting her “passionate fans” for all the love and attention.
“I love Britney,” he says.
The Instagram video — which Spears captioned, “Coolest guy ever!!! Such a freaking fan!” — was taken at a mutual friend’s dinner party. “She was very, very, very lovely,” the actor reports, explaining he’s been a fan of the pop star since her early days. “I was exactly the right age to have been swept up in all that mania,” he says, adding, “She’s a force.”

In “Black Bird,” the Apple TV+ true-crime drama that airs its fourth of six episodes Friday, Taron Egerton’s Jimmy Keene tries to help the FBI figure out where alleged serial killer Larry Hall’s victims are buried before it’s too late.
It’s a storyline that packs tension and urgency into the 1990s tale of a one-time drug dealer turned inmate who goes to great lengths to be freed.
But its the journey of his mind and Keene’s male-driven mindset that transform the story.

Show creator Dennis Lehane says the psychological subplot was a diversion from Keene’s 2010 biography but became necessary for its adaptation to the screen.
“The physical journal that Jimmy goes on in the TV show is pretty much identical,” Lehane said in an interview with The Associated Press.

The Black Bird cast may be biased, but they think the show is one of the best out there. The Apple TV+ series, which chronicles the real-life story of Jimmy Keene and accused serial killer Larry DeWayne Hall, features incredible performances from Taron Egerton, Paul Walter Hauser, Greg Kinnear and Sepideh Moafi. But the actors think the best aspect of the show is Dennis LeHane's writing. The screenwriter, who wrote Shutter Island, Gone Baby Gone and Mystic River, sprinkles in subtle details that depict the nuance of each character and the story itself. "What's incredible about Dennis's script is that it's a psychological thriller, and it's deeply...

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Black Bird” Season 1, Episode 3, “Hand to Mouth.”]
The first two episodes of “Black Bird,” released simultaneously last week, were exposition-heavy with the setup of our two leads: drug dealer-turned-informant Jimmy Keene (Taron Egerton) and possible (?) serial killer Larry Hall (Paul Walter Hauser). The culmination of Episode 2, “We Are Coming, Father Abraham,” saw Jimmy and Larry physically inhabit the same space with the hard work — Jimmy cozying up to Larry to garner a new confession — just beginning.
Episode 3, “Hand to Mouth,” continues the Lehane touch established in the first two episodes. It’s not surprising considering the director of this episode is Michael R. Roskam, who directed the 2014 feature film adaptation of Lehane’s novel, “The Drop.” Last week, Jimmy had a serious moment of weakness and contemplated backing out of the deal entirely. We understand why the first minute of this episode, when Jimmy looks back on the interactions he...

As Jimmy Keene, Oscar-nominee Taron Egerton goes from regular prison inmate to maximum security lockup in a bid to extract a murder confession from another inmate in “Black Bird.”
The drama, inspired by real events, tells a compelling tale about a star high school athlete-turned-minor-drug-kingpin, who is sent to prison after accepting a plea deal he’s assured by his retired police officer father (Ray Liotta) will only keep him inside for two years.
But, when Jimmy learns his dad has had a stroke over his fall from grace, and continues to face serious medical issues, Egerton’s character strikes a bargain with detectives and the Da’s office to be transferred to the worst prison in the state on assignment. When Kary Antholis in 2019 stepped down as President, HBO Miniseries and Cinemax Programming, to launch Crime Story Media, his exit package included him staying on as executive producer on projects he had developed at the network that tackle crime and criminal justice. That included David Simon and George Pelecanos’ limited series We Own This City, which premiered April 25, and Dennis Lehane’s Black Bird, which ended up moving to Apple TV+. Headlined by Taron Egerton and Paul Walter Hauser and featuring Ray Liotta in his final TV role, the series premieres July 8.

Life is a series of trials and errors — where, if you’re lucky, you can follow your passions from one interest to the next until you’ve amassed a wealth of experiences. Dennis Lehane, an award-winning novelist, playwright, producer, and screenwriter, has done just that, carving out an enviable career across a wide swath of the entertainment industry. His novels have been adapted into movies; his movies have gone on to critical acclaim; his TV work elevated some of this century’s best shows.
But for years, the next item on Lehane’s to-do list was showrunning. The writer behind episodes of “The Wire” and “Boardwalk Empire” had tried, multiple times, to develop and run his own series, but greater forces kept his dream at a distance.

The new Apple TV+ series "Black Bird" provides plenty of opportunities for electric performances. Taron Egerton plays Jimmy Keene, a criminal presented with an intriguing option: In exchange for his freedom, he must go undercover in a maximum security facility, befriend a possible killer (Paul Walter Hauser), and get the man to reveal the locations of where he buried his victims. Egerton and Hauser are doing some of the best work of their careers here, and they clearly relish being able to dig into these juicy dramatic roles.

It would appear easy enough to lose “Black Bird” in the shuffle of true-crime prestige TV series. It’s got the usual mix of name talent both young-ish (“Rocketman” and “Kingsman” star Taran Egerton; “Richard Jewell” star Paul Walter Hauser) and established (Greg Kinnear; the late Ray Liotta); it’s got real-life mystery that’s compelling but not wildly unpredictable; it’s even got a forgettable title that doesn’t reveal its connection to the story at hand until late in the series. So it’s a wonderful surprise to realize so quickly that this six-episode Apple TV+ series is more than the sum of its familiar parts: It’s an unexpectedly exacting and quietly gripping series of interlocking character studies.
The premise evokes both “The Departed” and “Zodiac.” In one storyline, cocky and charming drug dealer Jimmy Keene (Taron Egerton) is nabbed and unexpectedly sentenced to a decade in prison,...

Inspired by actual events, when high school football hero and decorated policeman’s son Jimmy Keene (Egerton) is sentenced to 10 years in a minimum-security prison, he is given the choice of a lifetime — enter a maximum-security prison for the criminally insane and befriend suspected serial killer Larry Hall (Hauser), or stay where he is and serve his full sentence with no possibility of parole. Keene quickly realizes his only way out is to elicit a confession and find out where the bodies of several young girls are buried before Hall’s appeal goes through. Taron Egerton is at the center of Apple’s new drama “Black Bird,” a show that asks him, foremost, to be a reactive force. Tangled in the prison system after his plan to plead out for a short narcotics-charge sentence blows up, Egerton’s Jimmy Keene is offered the opportunity to get out. His freedom depends on his managing to elicit information out of maximum-security prisoner Larry Hall (Paul Walter Hauser) before he’s freed on appeal. Against Hauser’s massive performance of criminal insanity or just plain insanity, Egerton is forced to be resourceful, to find ways to show us who Jimmy is beyond the object of misfortune: That he largely succeeds pulls “Black Bird” over the line.
Like many shows today, “Black Bird” would plainly work better as a movie; it was developed and executive produced by Dennis Lehane, whose novels, including “Mystic River” and “Shutter Island,” have been grist for films.

It turns out that was all in waiting for another project that would match the experience of the biographical musical.

And then when it was done, I wanted the same thing,” Egerton told The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s difficult when you’ve done something like that because not everything you get offered is as good or as interesting or as complex or as challenging for an actor, and it took a year.

Like so much of Dennis Lehane’s writing, “Black Bird” is a stealthy piece of storytelling — at first appearing like a simple crow, nested comfortably on the power line next to a dozen others like it, before spreading its wings and revealing a plumage streaked with shades of gray. For decades now, the novelist and screenwriter has married shrewd sociological observations with popular genre fare. His Kenzie/Gennaro series, peaking with “Gone Baby Gone” and its impossible question of how to best care for at-risk children, is stacked with similar quandaries rooted in morality, responsibility, and the public good. This perspective felt right at home on “The Wire,” which Lehane joined in Seasons 3 and 4, before “Boardwalk Empire,” “Mr. Mercedes,” and “The Outsider,” among other uncredited TV jobs, film scripts, and a steady output of new books.
“Black Bird,” his first series as showrunner and developer, alludes to its complementary components from the very start.
