The winners of this years British Soap Awards 2012 have been announced. The ceremony held on Saturday night (28th April) was hosted by Phillip Schofield and the usual war between Eastenders and Coronation Street ended in a tie this year with both soaps taking home seven awards.
However, Eastenders got the biggest gong as it was named Best Soap again. Pam St Clement (Pat) was given the Lifetime Achievement Award and Eastenders writer Simon Ashdown got the Special Achievement Award.

Emmerdale star Gemma Oaten has admitted that the soap's elder abuse storyline has been "heartbreaking" to film. The actress's character Rachel Breckle has recently become concerned that village vicar Ashley Thomas (John Middleton) is mistreating his frail father Sandy (Freddie Jones). As Sandy is reluctant to accept Rachel's help and nobody else believes that anything is wrong, the plot will continue to progress for some time to come. Emmerdale bosses have announced that a feisty new character named Rachel Breckle is to arrive in the village in July. The new arrival, played by actress Gemma Oaten, is defensive, argumentative and insistent on defending her young niece Amelia (to be played by 7-year-old Daisy Campbell), after she is accused of bullying Samson Dingle.
