Funding from Singaporean state sources is involved in two features that make their debut at the Cannes Film Festival this month. A third film, “The Breaking Ice,” is directed by Singapore-born filmmaker Anthony Chen.
“We are absolutely thrilled that we have the most number of Made with Singapore films debuting in Cannes this year,” said Justin Ang, assistant chief executive of media, innovation, communications and marketing at Singapore’s InfoComm Media Development Authority.
Malaysian-produced “Tiger Stripes,” which will play in the Critics’ Week section, and Vietnamese-made “Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell,” which will play in the Directors’ Fortnight section, both received cash injections from the Southeast Asia Co-Production Grant under the ‘Media Talent Progression Programme,’ which is backed by the Singapore Film Commission and the Imda.
Content production grants have been provided since 2018. Some 300 media professionals and 35 projects have been supported under the Mtpp, of which 11 have been released.

Singapore is launching a S$10M ($7.5M) fund to attract international productions to work with local filmmakers and shine a spotlight on the city.
The move follows Singapore’s success with the production of Crazy Rich Asians in 2018, which boosted the city’s profile as a tourist destination and also supported the careers of local talent.
Jointly managed by Singapore’s Infocomm Media Development Authority (Imda) and Singapore Tourism Board (Stb), the ‘Singapore On-screen Fund’ will provide support for international media and entertainment companies in “producing TV and film projects that reach global audiences, and shine the spotlight on destination Singapore”.
“These projects will also provide opportunities for local media enterprises and talent to work alongside global M&e partners in creating content for international audiences,” the two partners said in a statement.
International media conglomerates, streamers and studios with a proven track record will be invited to apply for the fund.

Singapore’s Infocomm Media Development Authority (Imda) is launching an SGD5 million (3.6 million) Virtual Production Innovation Fund.
The fund was announced by Singapore’s Senior Minister of State for Communications and Information, Tan Kiat How, at the opening of the Asia TV Forum & Market (Atf) and Screen Singapore on Wednesday. It is designed to support the local media industry to develop capabilities needed to harness virtual production technology. The technology uses LED screens to display realistic background environments for TV or film scenes, powered by a video game engine, so that the camera is able to capture actors and visual effects in real-time. Production will no longer be dependent on location, road closures, location fees and permits as well as the weather, set construction and space rental.
The Imda will deploy a two-pronged approach to develop these capabilities. The first prong is a partnership with the U.K.’s National Film...
