Elegant tutus and pink tights. Perfectly taut buns and laced pointe shoes. Beautiful princesses in search of the love of a prince and dying of broken hearts. Grace and poise. This is the world of ballet as most people know it. But ballet has also been used as a critical element in a few select horror films over the years, such as Dario Argento’s Suspiria, Jordan Peele’s Us, and even Radio Silence’s upcoming vampire thriller Abigail. This raises the question: what is there to fear about dances of Sugar Plum Fairies and Little Swans. And nowhere is the world of ballet explored with a deeper or more horrific lens than in Darren Aronofsky’s 2010 psychological thriller Black Swan...

Sarah Lane was the ballet dancer hired to double for Natalie Portman in Black Swan. That's about the only point that Lane, Portman and the filmmakers agree upon. Lane says that the star has been trying to grab the credit for doing most of the dancing in the film. She claims that such a notion would be absurd because Portman only had limited training in ballet, while she has spent a lifetime peforming the art. The battle has now exploded into gossip columns. Lane claims most of the shots on screen are actually her, though in some cases Portman's face was superimposed on her body. The filmmakers acknowledge this was done, but in very limited instances and that most of the dance footage features Portman. Click here for more...

Ballerina Sarah Lane isn't letting go of the controversy surrounding Natalie Portman in the Black Swan. Says the American Ballet Theatre star, "Full body shots with actual dancing is me. That why they hired me." She recently even went on ABC News' 20/20 for an exclusive interview in which she claimed that the film's producers asked her to keep quiet about her role. She has also taken center stage to speak out in a piece called, "The Real Black Swan" in Glamour Magazine.
Lane goes on to say, ""He asked if I would please not do any more interviews until after the Oscars because it was bad for Natalie's image, they were trying to create this image, this facade, really, that Natalie had done something extraordinary. Something that is pretty much impossible ... to become a professional ballerina in a year and half."...

It seems ballerina Sarah Lane just isn't ready to drop the Black Swan controversy yet. She is speaking out again about the fact that she did most of the dancing in Black Swan and producers told her to keep quiet about it.
Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky has come to actress Natalie Portman's defense refuting the claims that Portman only did about 5 percent of the dancing in her Oscar-winning role.
Now, Lane is speaking out in an interview with ABC News' 20/20, claiming that she was featured in most of the film's full body shots.
However, Black Swan editor Andy Weisblum tells 20/20 that Lane is exaggerating what she did in the film.

Sarah Lane says actor's head was superimposed on to her body and calls reputed fakery 'degrading to the entire ballet world'
A ballet dancer who performed in the acclaimed film Black Swan has repeated claims producers engaged in a cover-up to help Natalie Portman win an Oscar.
American Ballet Theatre's Sarah Lane was employed as Portman's "ballet double" on Darren Aronofsky's film. After the star took home the Academy Award for best actress in February, Lane claimed publicly that Portman only did 5% of the actual dancing in the film.
Portman's co-star Mila Kunis, and Aronofksy himself, subsequently came forward to dismiss suggestions that any subterfuge had taken place in the run up to the Oscars, but Lane refuses to back down.
In a new interview with Us TV show 20/20 on the ABC News network, she said Portman's face had been superimposed on to her body for the majority of shots.

Natalie Portman, Black Swan Natalie Portman has kept mum about who did what in Black Swan, but Sarah Lane, Portman's ballet double in Darren Aronofsky's psychological thriller, refuses to stop talking about the matter. The issue is reminiscent of the Mercedes McCambridge "demon voice" affair when William Friedkin's The Exorcist came out in late December 1973. McCambridge initially received no credit for dubbing the voice of the possessed Linda Blair. Although Sarah Lane told ABC's 20/20 that "I definitely think [Portman] deserves all the credit that she got with the Oscar," she also stated that "it really hurts for someone to say that they got a personal trainer and they became what I spent blood, sweat and tears doing every day, all my life, in just a year and a half." Lane isn't directly blaming Portman. Instead, she focuses on Fox Searchlight's Oscar campaign which apparently insinuated that Portman became a...

Los Angeles, CA, United States (Ahn Entertainment) - Natalie Portman's "Black Swan" body double issue is far from over. American Ballet Theater dancer Sarah Lane, who was the Oscar winner's dance double in the film, won't give the issue a rest, claiming that it was really her dancing that was mostly featured.
Lane, who wrote and got interviewed about doing the dance work for Portman, still insists that the filmmakers lied about the actress' dancing abilities in the film.
In an interview with "20/20" on ABC, Lane simmered about how the producers made her role appear insignificant when it was her dancing that got Natalie praised for in the film.
"They're completely lying about the amount of dancing did in the movie," she said.

Natalie Portman's unwillingness to jump into an icy lake for another movie scene has been blown out of proportion since the actress' body double in "Black Swan" launched a protest on the amount of full body shots she did for the Oscar-winning role. Portman, as seen in the trailer of "Your Highness", is butt-naked but she only did one shot.
Daily Mail went to investigate the matter and got hold of the girl whose face was obscured by Portman's. An Irish student by the name of Caroline Davis said, "I'm a film studies student so I jumped at the chance to be on set." Davis, who came from Ulster where the movie was filmed, claimed she was paid GBP250 to take the plunge to the lake. Portman meanwhile only did a scene where she stood on the edge of the lake with a thong bikini.

Ballet star Sarah Lane's allegations that she, not Natalie Portman, was the star of hit film Black Swan appear to ring true if new face replacement footage on the DVD is to be believed.
The American Ballet Theater star was hired to perform the most complex Swan Lake dance scenes in the film, but whereas Portman has claimed she performed 75 per cent of what is seen in the movie, Lane insists all the dancing in the film was her, and the actress only featured in five per cent of the ballet sequences..
The dancer caused controversy when she first came forward with her claims and she's not backing down - in a new 20/20 news special, which aired on American TV on Friday, Lane sat down with the DVD of the film and picked the intricate ballet scenes apart, stating, "This is all me, you can actually see my face sometimes... The full body shots with actual dancing is me."
And the DVD release appears to back up her claims - it features bonus footage of how Portman's face was superimposed onto hers.
Lane accepted she wouldn't be credited for her major role in the film, but felt she had to speak out when moviegoers started to believe Portman was the sole star of the movie's ballet scenes.
She added, "I didn't do the movie to get fame or recognition, or anything... (but) I've been dancing for 22 years and to say that someone trained for a year and a half and did what I did... it's degrading, not only to me, but to the entire ballet world."
Lane told 20/20 she was approached by one of Black Swan's film producers after she first came forward to dismiss Portman's dancing claims; he asked her not to speak to the press until after the Oscars, where the actress won gold.
She recalled, "(He said) it was bad for Natalie's image.
"But they were trying to create this facade that Natalie had done something extraordinary, something that's pretty much impossible - to become a professional ballerina in a year and a half."
Lane was not surprised when Portman didn't mention her in her acceptance speech: "I expected it. At that point I knew what was going on."
The dancer insists she still thinks Portman deserved the Best Actress prize at the Oscars: "I think she is a really beautiful actress and I loved working with her."
For the record, director Darren Aronofsky appears to side with his leading lady and not the ballet star, insisting Portman performed 80 per cent of the dance scenes in his film, and his editor, Andy Weisblum, tells 20/20, "There are about 35 shots that are full body shots in the movie... Of those 35 shots, 12 are Natalie and the rest are Sarah, but, of the overall film, Natalie did a lot more than that; she did most of the other shots. It was sometimes hard for me to tell the difference... It was so close."...

The 'Black Swan' ballet battle rages on.
Sarah Lane, American Ballet Theatre star and dance double to Natalie Portman in "Black Swan," has again gone public with her accusations that she did most of the dancing for the part that won Portman an Oscar.

The "Black Swan" controversy regarding the amount of "untouched" dance that Natalie Portman did for the movie, continues. The body double has spoken to ABC's "20/20", saying the filmmakers were lying when they said Portman did eighty percent of the ballet.
"I'm not speaking like I feel like I should be heralded," Sarah Lane told Elizabeth Vargas. "I'm speaking because [the filmmakers] are completely lying about the amount of dancing Natalie did in the movie. When those incorrect things are coming out, and they threaten the entire principle of ballet, then I feel like I need to say something."
Director Darren Aronofsky defended the accusation that Portman was only a dummy during dance scenes, saying in a statement last month that of 139 dance scenes shot in the film, 111 of them were done by the actress without editing. The director added Lane did 28 of them which is only 20 percent of the total.

The Black Swan controversy keeps on spinning. In an interview with ABC’s 20/20 that aired Friday, Sarah Lane — the dance double who has contended Portman did “5 percent” of the full-body dancing in the film — said that the filmmakers who have come to Portman’s defense are “completely lying.” Director Darren Aronofsky said in a statement last month that, of the 139 dance shots in the film, 111 are of Portman “untouched,” while 28 are of Lane: “If you do the math, that’s 80 percent Natalie Portman.”
“I’m not speaking because I feel like I should be heralded,” Lane said to 20/20′s Elizabeth Vargas.

Apparently we haven't heard the last of Sarah Lane. The Natalie Portman ballet body double appeared on "Good Morning America" on Friday (April 15) to talk about her the controversy surrounding her contributions to the film and attempts to keep her from speaking out about her work.
Lane tells "Gma" that she did most of the full body and close-up shot dancing and that Portman's head was superimposed on her body with "computer effects." Lane goes on to admit that she wasn't told she'd get credit for her work and says she didn't do the movie to "get fame or recognition."
So why speak out now? Lane says that after a small interview in Glamour, one of the film's producers called her and asked to her to not do anymore press until after the Oscars.

Natalie Portman drew raves for dancing like a professional ballerina in 'Black Swan.' If it looked impossible, that's because it was, according to what Sarah Lane, Portman's dance double, said on 'Good Morning America' (weekdays, 7Am on ABC). Lane expanded on her previous statements that she actually performed the more difficult shots in the film, which were credited to Portman.
Although Lane made clear she was never told she would get credit for specific scenes, she accused director Darren Aronofsky of trying to create an exaggerated image of Portman's dancing work. "They were trying to create this, you know, image, you know, this façade, really, that Natalie had done something extraordinary," she said. "Something that is pretty much impossible."

"They were trying to create this, you know, image, you know, this façade, really, that Natalie had done something extraordinary," she said. "Something that is pretty much impossible."

First, Natalie Portman’s Black Swan body double Sarah Lane told EW that she, and not the Oscar-winning Portman, had performed 95 percent of the full-body dance shots in the ballet thriller. Then, Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky and co-star Mila Kunis denied Lane’s claims. Finally, Portman danced around the controversy in her one and only comment on the topic to E!, saying “I’m really proud of everyone’s work on the movie and of my experience.” And now comes video that has no bearing on the controversy whatsoever (though many will likely try to spin it into an...

Los Angeles, CA, United States (Ahn Entertainment) - Natalie Portman is breaking her silence about her recent dance-double controversy.
Her dancing double, Sarah Lane, claims that she did most of the dance scenes in the Oscar-winning "Black Swan," which had been refuted by Fox Searchlight, the film's choreographer and Portman's fiancé Benjamin Millepied, and co-star Mila Kunis.
Lane told Dance Magazine that Fox Searchlight wanted the public to see Portman as a dedicated actress who became a ballerina in a year and a half for a role, adding that she did almost all of the dance scenes in the film.
Millepied defended his bride-to-be, saying 85 percent of the movie is Portman. Fox Searchlight and Kunis also defended the actress.

Natalie Portman has broken her silence over the "Black Swan" ballet double controversy, insisting she won't "give in" to the gossip that is threatening to ruin the magic of the film. The actress' role as a troubled dancer has come under increasing scrutiny since she won the 2011 Best Actress Academy Award in February, with critics claiming her dancing double, American Ballet Theater star Sarah Lane - and not Portman - deserves the credit for the film's most breathtaking sequences.
In a Wall Street Journal essay on her movie experience, Lane insists Portman only performed five per cent of the ballet routines in the finished film, while the actress insists she worked hard to perfect her dancing skills - and performed about 75 per cent of what is seen in Black Swan. Director Darren Aronofsky, co-star Mila Kunis and Black Swan choreographer Benjamin Millepied, who is Portman's fiance, have all defended the actress,...

All that doppelganger drama in "Black Swan" isn't half as exciting as what's been playing out off screen between Natalie Portman and her ballet double, Sarah Lane.
First, Lane got her tutu in a twist and claimed she did most of Portman's footwork, then director Darren Aronofsky, co-star Mila Kunis, and choreographer Benjamin Millipied all cried fowl — er, foul — and said that just wasn't so.
Now Portman has stopped dancing around the issue and is setting the record straight.
"I had a chance to make something beautiful with this film," she told E! Online, "and I don't want to give in to the gossip."
Okaaaay… We understand that Portman could give a flying fouetté, but does she kinda, maybe think she should have included Lane in her Oscar acceptance speech?
"I don't remember my Oscar speech at all, and I'm actually too embarrassed to watch it," said Portman.

When ballerina Sarah Lane claimed last month that she had done 95 percent of the dancing in Natalie Portman’s Oscar-winning Black Swan performance, Portman’s supporters — including co-star Mila Kunis and director Darren Aronofsky – were quick to defend their star. But Portman herself has stayed mum on the topic — until now. “I know what went on,” Portman told E! News’ Ashlan Gorse during a press junket for the new comedy Your Highness. “I’m really proud of everyone’s work on the movie and of my experience. And I’ll have that forever. " Black Swan " star Natalie Portman is not letting controversy tarnish her Oscar gold. Last month, Portman's dance double Sarah Lane told Entertainment Weekly that Portman only performed 5% of the dancing that appeared in the film while she performed the other 95%. The ballerina also said she was told by a producer not to discuss her work lest it hurt Portman's Oscar campaign. "Black Swan" director Darren Aronofsky , costar Mila Kunis , and choreographer/fiance Benjamin Millepied all came to Portman's defense and denied Lane's claims. When asked by E! Online about the controversy , Portman stuttered, "Um...you know, like it's it's....um...I know what went on. We, we had an amazing experience making the movie and I don't want to tarnish it by entering into nastiness, because it's such a positive thing what we get to do." The Oscar winner went on to say that she was proud of everyone's work on the movie,...

A month after Natalie Portman took home the Oscar for her portrayal of a prima ballerina in Darren Aronofsky's dark thriller "Black Swan," controversy erupted regarding whether she had actually performed the dances in the film. Portman's ballet body double, Sarah Lane, claimed that the majority of the dancing was performed by professionals.
Those who worked closely with the star in "Black Swan" promptly spoke out to defend Portman. Her fiancé and co-star, Benjamin Millepied, initially spoke out about it, saying, "There are articles now talking about her dance double [Lane] that are making it sound like [Lane] did a lot of the work, but really, she just did the footwork, and the fouettés, and one diagonal [phrase] in the studio. Honestly, 85 percent of that movie is Natalie.

Sarah Lane, the controversial dancing double in Black Swan, certainly has not been too shy to share her opinion on the Oscar scandal. In fact, as some suggest Natalie shouldn't have won the Oscar for her psychological role, Fox Searchlight, Benjamin Millepied and Mila Kunis have all taken to the star's defense. The only person we haven't heard from? Portman, herself. But even when you're pregnant, you can't stay tight-lipped forever... So what's N.P.'s take on the dancing double? The big story
Our journalistic colleagues in home news and business are used to juggling with conflicting sets of figures: crime statistics that arrive in the morning and are turned on their head by mid-afternoon; rival measures of inflation, house price indices and the like. We on the film desk don't feel quite so at home in these number-flinging fact fights, especially when half of the argument seems to be taking place in French. Our heads hurt. What's it to be? First of all we had Benjamin Millepied, Natalie Portman's choreographer partner for her Oscar-winning performance in the weird ballet film Black Swan, responding to accusations that she had taken undue credit for her dance double's work: "Honestly, 85% of that movie is Natalie." The controversy over Natalie Portman's dance double reveals the culture clash between Hollywood's colossal budgets and the underfunded world of ballet
Feathers are continuing to fly over Black Swan. Darren Aronofsky's movie, for which Natalie Portman won an Oscar, is about a ballerina losing her grip on reality as she prepares to dance Swan Lake. Portman took ballet classes in preparation for the role, but Sarah Lane of American Ballet Theatre has claimed that she did the actual classical dancing, which includes pointe work. Her face was then, it seems, digitally replaced by Portman's. Lane, who worked on the film for more than six weeks, was also used for the full body-shots and just-the-legs shots.
Lane was not credited for her work as Portman's dance-double, however, nor was she on the longish list of people thanked by Portman in her Oscar acceptance speech. In addition, she was suddenly...

Black Swan co-star Mila Kunis spoke out on the supposed “Dancing Scandal” over how much film star Natalie Portman actually danced in the 2010 film.
“I think it’s unfortunate that this is coming out and taking attention away from [the praise] Natalie deserved and got,” says Kunis to Popeater.
Dancer Sarah Lane was used as Portman’s dancing double throughout the film. Lane spoke out recently saying that it was a cover-up by Fox Searchlight to not give her dancing credit in the film. Why? To enhance Black Swan’s award positioning and that of Portman who was an early standout during Oscar season.
“They were trying to create this facade that she had become a ballerina in a year and a half,” says Lane. “[It is unfortunate that], as professional dancers, we work so hard, but people can actually believe that it’s easy enough to do it in a year. That’s the thing that bothered me the most.

If you saw "Black Swan," you likely remember the scene, late in the film, when Nina (Natalie Portman) confronts her rival in the ballet company, Lily (Mila Kunis). Nina is the lead in their production of "Swan Lake" but she worries that her director might replace her. Paranoid, hallucinating, and quite mad, she physically attacks Lily in her dressing room to defend her role. The scene is quite deliberately over the top. But given the news that's been coming out about the backstage world of "Black Swan," and watching how bitterly real ballet dancers react when the feel mistreated, maybe it wasn't quite as over the top as initially assumed.
That news, if you've missed it so far, is the allegation made by dancer Sarah Lane last Friday in Entertainment Weekly, that she had performed some 95% of the wide shots in which Nina is seen dancing. According to Lane, she...

Just in time for the DVD release of "Black Swan," it appears that the only person left to weigh in on this whole "how-much-did-Natalie-Portman-actually-dance" situation is Portman herself.
Mila Kunis spoke with Entertainment Weekly regarding Sarah Lane's allegations against the Academy Award winning actress. Kunis continues to say that Portman never tried to give the impression that she didn't receive help.

What with body doubles and close-ups and bird arms, it’s hard to determine if critiques of Natalie Portman’s dancing in Black Swan from her dance double Sarah Lane might really be accurate. That being said, Mila Kunis defends Portman’s dancing, claiming “”Natalie danced her a– off. I think it’s unfortunate that this is coming out and taking attention away from [the praise] Natalie deserved and got.” There’s not much anyone can say to refute that. Watch the movie; Portman’s butt has literally melted away under the intense ballet training. It’s like watching Jack Skellington perform in The Nutcracker.
Darren Aronofsky also defended Natalie’s dancing, claiming Portman performed at least 80% her own performances. Settle down, Darren. No one is questioning whether you’re really the king of disturbing pseudo-lesbian ballet horror. You have this in the bag. “[Lane] wasn’t used for everything. It was more like a safety net.

Late last week, a dancer with the American Ballet Theatre claimed that she was the victim of a scam by Fox Searchlight, who were determined to tell whatever lies they had to tell to get an Oscar for Natalie Portman in Black Swan.
Sara Lane, who served as Portman’s body double, claims that Portman did less than 5% of the ballet dancing in the film, and that her face was digitally added to Lane’s body for most of the dance scenes. Fox Searchlight says this claim is nonsense, and that Natalie did actually managed to learn how to dance like a professional in the 18 months she had to train for the role. Lane says that’s simply impossible, that no one can dance like a pro after that short a training period.

With Black Swan arriving on DVD and Blu-ray today, a little controversy always makes for good publicity. Last Friday, Natalie Portman’s Black Swan dancing double Sarah Lane told Entertainment Weekly that Portman—who won the Best Actress Oscar for her role—only danced five percent of the full-body shots in the film. And yesterday, in response, Aronofsky released a statement through studio Fox Searchlight defending his actress (click here). Now, Black Swan’s Mila Kunis is standing up for her co-star.

Who's right, Sarah Lane or Natalie Portman? Well, that has been the question on all of our minds after we first revealed the Black Swan controversy that has catapulted into a major Oscar scandal. No doubt, it's easy to accuse Lane of wanting her 15 minutes of fame, but read everything she has to say, and the American Ballet Theatre beauty doesn't seem as greedy as she is being pegged. Now, the studio has officially released a statement, standing by Natalie and her dancing, where director Darren Aronofsky counters almost everything Lane has previously said. As has co-star Mila Kunis, who just recently joined the Portman defense bandwagon, vouching for Natalie's hard work....
