Casualty, the BBC’s long-running medical series, has been the subject of viewer complaints after featuring a storyline in which a character discusses their top surgery.
The BBC received 142 complaints from disgruntled audience members, who said it was “inappropriate” for Casualty to show non-binary character Sah Brockner (Arin Smethurst) discussing their surgery.
“I booked time off because I finally got the date for my top surgery,” Brockner told colleagues. “Before you say anything, I know a double mastectomy is not to be taken lightly … for now at least, I’m just happy that I’ll look like the person I feel like on the inside. It’s been a long time coming.”
Brockner’s fellow paramedics, Jan Jenning and Teddy Gowan, responded positively to the news and offered to “stick the kettle on” in celebration.

Scarlett Johansson’s decision to exit “Rub and Tug” has been met with praise from both GLAAD and Hollywood’s transgender community. Her casting as Dante “Tex” Gill in the film had ben met with fierce backlash, as Gill was likely transgender and many were angered that yet another trans role had gone to a cisgender actor; the initial response from Johansson’s representative — “Tell them that they can be directed to Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto, and Felicity Huffman’s reps for comment” — only exacerbated the situation.
Now that she’s exited the project and apologized for her “insensitive” comment, however, Johansson appears to have smoothed things over.
Sarah Kate Ellis of GLAAD released the following statement:
“Scarlett Johansson’s announcement, together with the transgender voices who spoke out about this film, are game changers for the future of transgender images in Hollywood. Hollywood changed how Americans understand gay and lesbian lives,...

Scarlett Johansson’s withdrawal from Rub & Tug, in which she’d been cast as a transgender man, is a game changer in Hollywood’s portrayal of the transgender community, GLAAD said today.
The Lgtbq media-advocacy organization also cited “the transgender voices” who spoke out about the film. “Hollywood changed how Americans understand gay and lesbian lives,” GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said in a statement, “and TV is starting to do the same for transgender people with authentic transgender portrayals being major hits with critics and audiences. The film industry has a real opportunity to do the same.”
Earlier today, Johansson announced that she was leaving the Rupert Sanders-directed biopic project about Pittsburgh massage parlor owner and crime kingpin Dante “Tex” Gill. The real-life Gill was born Lois Jean Gill but identified as a man.
The actress’ decision followed a loud reaction from the transgender community and others,...

Annie Wallace will be joining the cast of Hollyoaks in the coming weeks to play a trans teacher.
Wallace confirmed her casting on Twitter, after Lgbtq activist Paris Lees hailed Hollyoaks's decision as groundbreaking in The Guardian.
"[Wallace] is trans, although Hollyoaks – which quietly had Rebecca Root on the show in a non-trans role earlier this year – isn't making a song and dance about it," Lees wrote.
"Wallace has been acting on British television for the past five years in what we call 'stealth' – keeping your mouth shut about your transition. She felt she had to. In 2015 she's changed her mind."
Hollyoaks fans will remember that Lees herself appeared on the soap in 2014 as a friend of trans character Blessing Chambers (Modupe Adeyeye).
For Wallace's part, she has been cited in the past as an inspiration for the Hayley Cropper character on Coronation Street.
