In this timely but unsubtle film, Jason Biggs plays a documentary maker who questions his ethics after his wannabe-gangster subject is murdered
This New York-set drama from 2020 was directed by Lanie Zipoy who died last year aged 49; it was on the ball in grappling with Black Lives Matter themes of systemic racism and white liberal guilt. The Subject poses thorny questions about the ethics of documenting marginalised black communities and what constitutes rightful representation – but proceeds at a dogged pace more suited to the stage (it’s written by playwright Chisa Hutchinson) and is perhaps a little too crude in setting up the character assassination of its hypocritical protagonist.
American Pie’s Jason Biggs plays Phil Waterhouse, an award-winning documentary director feted for his harrowing latest work, whose subject, wannabe gang member Malcolm (Nile Bullock), was beaten to death in front of the camera. Phil has reaped the benefits: a swanky apartment,...

It’s back to the vineyards for Alex Parrish — Quantico has been cancelled after three seasons.
The action drama — which is currently airing its third season on ABC — starred Priyanka Chopra as FBI agent Alex Parrish, who soon became a person of interest in a terrorist attack on Grand Central in New York City. The story, of course, developed quite a bit further in the two seasons since.
The series also starred Josh Hopkins, Jake McLaughlin, Aunjanue Ellis, Yasmine Al Massri, Johanna Braddy, Tate Ellington, Graham Rogers, Anabelle Acosta, Russell Tovey, Pearl Thusi, Blair Underwood, Marlee Matlin and Alan Powell,...

Quantico is one of those efforts that may suffer from its various connections to other shows – read: writers/producers whose previous work doesn’t necessarily see the value in avoiding melodrama at any point at all.
The premise is an interesting one, and there’s nothing wrong with the highs and lows of throwing young-ish people into close quarters with each other, and you have to love feints-within-feints, but much of Quantico is constructed with a, “Well, if some is good…” theory in mind.
Alex Parrish (Priyanka Chopra) is one of a group of recruits hoping to become FBI agents, and her own version of not being absolutely honest about why she’s there might have been enough, but before long Alex has been framed for a terrorist attack, and she’s got to figure out how to get out from under a thoroughly-planned setup… unless she did it. So spins the show…...

Looks like Alex Parrish is going to have many more episodes to try and prove her innocence. ABC has given its new hit drama Quantico a full season order. However, unlike most full season pick-ups, ABC’s order for Quantico isn’t for a back nine but for six more installments instead. That brings Quantico‘s total Season 1 episode count to 19, although there is the possibility for more if ABC decides to add episodes. Throughout its first three weeks, Quantico has been a strong performer for ABC on Sunday nights. The show drew 7.1 million total viewers and a 1.9 demo rating in its series premiere, and in its second week, Quantico matched its series debut’s demo number and was the night’s highest-rated drama. This past Sunday, the series doubled the numbers from its lead-in, fellow newbie Blood & Oil. Quantico stars Priyanka Chopra, Josh Hopkins, Aunjanue Ellis, Jake McLaughlin, Tate Ellington,...

The Movie Pool goes rogue for the Freelancers Blu-ray!
The Set-up
A rookie NYC cop (Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson) finds that his training officer is part of a band of crooked cops, whose leader (Robert DeNiro) protects the city's organized crime. Also stars Forest Whitaker and Dana Delaney.
Directed by: Jessy Terrero
The Delivery
Freelancers is a convoluted cop film that tries to be Training Day, but gets dragged down by multiple pointless character arcs and a mumbling performance from rapper turned actor Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson. That's really too bad, because despite Jackson's lack of acting skills and a cliche-ridden script, there's actually a decent cop movie here.
Mind you, this isn't Heat or Copland or anything close to that, but Freelancers is watchable when it isn't tripping itself up. Terrero seems like a competent director, and the films certainly looks good, but the script by L. Philippe Casseus tries way...
