The implosion of cryptocurrency platform Ftx and its increasingly infamous founder Sam Bankman-Fried is the subject of a new documentary from premium nonfiction studio Xtr.
The company behind docs including “They Call Me Magic,” “Meet Me in the Bathroom” and the Emmy and Peabody award-winning “76 Days” is already in production on the untitled Ftx feature. Oscar nominee and Emmy winner David Darg is directing and presently on the ground in the Bahamas, where Ftx is headquartered and where Bankman-Fried is currently being questioned by securities officials.
The project touts “unprecedented access to key players at Ftx and the cryptocurrency community.” The doc “will explore the corporate drama that upended markets, sparked government investigations and sent shock waves through an industry still battling to gain mainstream credibility,” the filmmakers told Variety.
The international scandal has riveted the entertainment and media sector over the past month, since Ftx’s liquidity was called into question.

Are non-fiction films easier to finance and produce in 2020?
Some of the buzziest projects in production in the UK right now are non-fiction: Altitude’s untitled Princess Diana documentary, directed by Ed Perkins and produced by Lightbox, the team behind Man On Wire; Embankment’s untitled Queen Elizabeth documentary directed by Roger Michell; and a new Alex Ferguson documentary produced by DNA’s Andrew Macdonald and Ventureland’s John Battsek, which will aim for a theatrical release in 2021.
More and more companies are embracing non-fiction work during the pandemic.

“If you’re part of the joke, it’s not as painful as being the joke” – David Arquette.
I was always a guy who didn’t quite understand the hate that David Arquette received when he became the WCW World Champion back in 2000. He didn’t book the win, he wasn’t writing the shows, he got paid to do a job with a company, and he did that job. I never hated him for that. It was perhaps a weird booking decision, sure… but wrestling is weird. Wrestling is silly. The hatred was always unnecessary.

If you had of told me a week ago that a documentary about Deputy Dewey from the Scream movies was something I needed in my life right now, I would of called you a damn fool. I you had told me that a documentary about that actor who tried to be a wrestler for five minutes would take me on a rollercoaster of emotions – and I mean the full spectrum of human feeling: the highs, the lows and everything in between – well again I would of scoffed at you.

You Cannot Kill David Arquette Deliver’s A Body Slam From The Heart An Interview With The Director’s
Back in 2000, David Arquette actor turned wrestler turned out to be the biggest heal in the hearts of wrestling fans when he won the World Heavyweight Championship in WCW. Arquette pinned Eric Bischoff in what many fans considered one of the dyer moments of the already dying wrestling promotion that was WCW. You Cannot Kill David Arquette is a film directed by David Darg and Price James that takes a look at Arquette and the ups and downs that the actor has faced since the day’s Arquette became a heel in the eyes of wrestling fan’s and the jokester of Hollywood. The film is funny, and entertaining, and I dear say heartfelt in Arquette’s persistence to get back in the ring and be taken seriously as a professional wrestler. We had the awesome opportunity to interview the directors of the film and get an insight into the film.

Can you trust a documentary that’s set in the world of professional wrestling, where the action is scripted and the storylines are phony?
Can you believe what you see in a nonfiction film about an actor who has always to some degree approached his career like an extended piece of performance art?
And if you don’t trust it and you can’t believe it, can you still be entertained and maybe even touched by “You Cannot Kill David Arquette?”
I’d say the answers to those questions are no, no and hell, yeah.

Actor David Arquette — who once posed on the cover of Vanity Fair alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, Matthew McConaughey, and the rest of 1996’s hottest leading men before the “Scream” franchise left him typecast as a terminal doofus — is just kind of sick of being a joke. “I’m just kind of sick of being a joke,” the now-48-year-old laments at one point in his new documentary while dressed in nothing but a rhinestone cape and vaping on the back of a pony in his backyard. It’s a funny moment in a movie full of good-natured howlers, but Arquette isn’t kidding. On the contrary, he’s willing to die for a little respect. And he just might have to in order to earn the kind of respect he’s looking for.
It all started when Arquette partnered with World Championship Wrestling to promote his goofy 2000 comedy “Ready to Rumble.

David Arquette is known for a few things. He’s best recognized as Deputy Dewey Riley in the Scream franchise of films, of course. However, he’s also famous, or perhaps infamous, for being an actor who cameoed for a time in World Championship Wrestling (better known as WCW). Not only did he get in the ring, but a storyline had him win the WCW World Heavyweight Championship, something that wrestling fans hated with a vicious passion. Not only did this halt whatever wrestling career the passionate fan of the sport had, it torpedoed his ascent in Hollywood, as well. The new documentary You Cannot Kill David Arquette not just tackles this bit of his history, but his recent decision to try and wrestle again, all in an effort to get some measure of respect. If it sounds silly, it’s actually surprisingly empathetic and emotional. The movie is a documentary about,...

In 2000, David Arquette, coming off “Never Been Kissed” and the third “Scream” film, co-starred in a comedy called “Ready to Rumble,” which attempted to satirize the hyperbolic freak show of professional wrestling. To promote the movie, Arquette got woven into World Championship Wrestling storylines, mostly as a comic foil — after all, he wasn’t a real wrestler. But a few weeks into the film’s release, in a setup bogus enough to shame Andy Kaufman, it was arranged that Arquette would win a fight to become the WCW Heavyweight Champion. Which he did (his reign lasted all of 12 days).
This was a stunt so outlandish that wrestling fans considered it a bridge of fakery too far. Some said that Arquette’s championship had ruined the sport. So even though Arquette, a wrestling aficionado from way back, was just riding the cross-promotional PR train and doing what he’d been told,...

Before I start this review, I feel like I should go ahead and just admit a few things. One, I am a ridiculously huge fan of David Arquette and his work, which includes his performances in the Scream series to Ready to Rumble to his directorial effort on The Tripper and everything in between. And two, I’m one of the few people out there who was actually excited when he was working in WCW. With that in mind, I was already totally and completely on board for You Cannot Kill David Arquette before I even saw a single minute of footage. But now that I have had the opportunity to check out this all-encompassing project from directors David Darg and Price James, You Cannot Kill David Arquette quickly has become not only my favorite documentary of 2020, but one of my favorite films, regardless of category, of the year as well.

For everyone that is walking around in life thinking they could kill David Arquette, I have some disappointing news for you: think again. While the intentionally provocative title of a new documentary featuring the actor isn’t quite literal, it does capture his unstoppable journey of perseverance and redemption.
You Cannot Kill David Arquette, shot over three years by directors David Darg and Price James, explores Arquette’s comeback in professional wrestling after getting flack for winning the World Championship Wrestling grand prize in 2000 around the time he made Ready to Rumble. "I'm just kinda sick of being a joke." SuperLTD has released an official trailer for a documentary titled You Cannot Kill David Arquette, which is about exactly what it sounds like it's about. Branded as the most hated man in wrestling after winning the highly controversial World Heavyweight Championship in 2000, actor David Arquette attempts a rocky return to the sport that stalled his promising Hollywood career. Dangerously determined to redeem his reputation and reclaim his self-respect, Arquette will stop at nothing to earn his place in professional wrestling. This was set to premiere at the SXSW Film Festival earlier this year, and it will also play at the Fantasia Film Festival this summer before it hits VOD later this month. "An unexpectedly emotional and heartfelt documentary directed by David Darg and Price James, this is a truly outrageous portrait of a dangerously determined former A-lister." Super Ltd, the boutique division and incubator from Neon, has secured the North American distribution right to You Cannot Kill David Arquette, the SXSW-selected documentary that details the journey through Arquette’s life and wrestling.
David Darg and Price James directed the doc, which was filmed over a three-year period. Following his infamous championship run as part of a marketing stunt for the film Ready to Rumble, Arquette is widely known as the most hated man in pro-wrestling worldwide. Nearly 20 years after he “won” the initial title, through ups and downs in his career, with his family, and with his struggles with addiction, Arquette seeks redemption by returning to the ring for real this time.

Filmmakers Jason Sussberg and David Alvarado were holed up in a studio Friday at Skywalker Ranch, putting the finishing touches on the sound mix for their film “We Are As Gods,” a documentary about the environmentalist Stewart Brand. The two men were scrambling to get everything ready for the film’s March 15 premiere at South by Southwest when they saw the news. For the first time in its 34 year history, the Austin, Texas-based film festival was cancelled amidst fears of the coronavirus outbreak.
“There’s no words,” said Alvarado. “To have labored on a documentary for three years and then find out the festival was cancelled on the same day you’ve finished — it was just devastating.”
Now, like so many filmmakers impacted by the SXSW cancellation, Sussberg and Alvarado are trying to figure out how to sell their film to a studio without the boost that comes with a high-profile premiere.

David Arquette made an unlikely return to professional wrestling last year, and a documentary about his comeback is in the works called “You Cannot Kill David Arquette,” the film’s production company Xtr announced Thursday.
Arquette learned some basic wrestling moves back for his 2000 film “Ready to Rumble,” and at the time, he was even crowned a world champion from World Championship Wrestling as part of a marketing stunt. He became a perfect villain in the sport, and now nearly two decades later, he made the real wrestling circuit and competed in 19 different professional matches, some of which even left him bloodied as seen in this video.
David Darg, an Oscar-nominee for the documentary short film “Body Team 12,” directed “You Cannot Kill David Arquette,” and he’s been filming throughout Arquette’s tour for the last two years. Xtr, a new nonfiction film and TV studio, will be part of...

The International Documentary Assn. announced nominees for the 34th annual Ida Awards Wednesday, spotlighting the best in documentary filmmaking.
Among the feature nominees were mainstays on the circuit so far this year like Hulu’s “Crime + Punishment” and “Minding the Gap,” as well as National Geographic’s “Free Solo” and Focus Features’ “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?”
In recognition of another banner year for non-fiction cinema, which has been reflected in box office spikes around key titles this year, the Ida expanded the number of nominees in the best feature and short films categories to 10 films.
In “creative recognition” fields, winners and nominees were announced. “Distant Constellation” won the cinematography prize, while “Minding the Gap” took editing. “The Other Side of Everything” won the writing award, and the music category saw a tie, between “Bisbee ’17” and “Hale County This Morning, This Evening.”

“From documentaries, we learn about our world and humanity,” was the greeting by Documentary Branch governor Kate Amend to the audience in the Samuel Goldwyn Theater on Wednesday evening at the opening of Documentary program. Amend said while this year’s nominated shorts were tragic, they were also about “courage and compassion.”
Referring to the Documentary Shorts as “The Big Shorts,” Amend (editor of The Long Way Home, Into the Arms of Strangers: Stories of the Kindertransport and The Case against 8) mentioned that 124 films qualified in both the Documentary Feature and Documentary Short Subject categories.
The evening included a screening of clips from the nominated films. Nominees from all 10 films also took part in panel discussions talked about their own films and shared insights on the craft of documentary filmmaking. All the directors gratefully acknowledged the collaboration of the cinematographers and editors in the success of their movies.

“A Girl in the River” masterfully portrays a culture that justifies killing women, its rage subsumed by a dispiriting account of how its customs are perpetuated. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): nothing

It’s an extraordinary group of short documentaries that received Oscar nominations this year, and I’m having a tough time picking a favorite, a best, or a guess about which will win the Academy Award. I am partial to stories about women, however, and in particular about the special hardships that women face because of our gender, so I’m gonna throw my hopes for a win behind “A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness” [IMDb | official site], from Pakistani filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (who won this same Oscar in 2012 for her short doc “Saving Face”). Body Team 12 – Liberia – 13 minutes
For Americans the Ebola scare was a handful of cases and nurses who weren’t as careful as they should have been. To the world it was thousands upon thousands of dead bodies—loved ones that family members can’t normally mourn because every second the deceased’s blood lays in the streets is an extra second risking greater contamination. It’s easy to forget the scope of epidemics like this when ground zero isn’t in our own backyard. We blame countries for being inferior, rejoice in our capabilities to put a lid on things, and go about our daily business as though nothing is wrong. This isn’t the case for citizens of Liberia where outbreak numbers exploded exponentially. It was a plague destroying their country.

If there’s a trio of categories that aren’t given the respect that they deserve (or frankly, any respect at all), it’s the short film categories. Be it Best Animated Short, Best Documentary Short, or Best Live Action Short, they all are mostly ignored by the masses, especially when the first two have feature length cousins in Best Animated Feature and Best Documentary Feature to compete with as well. Still, they deserve to be noticed, so I wanted to quickly list what’s in contention this year. I’ve included the categories in my most recent Oscar prediction update, so there’s that as well. The Academy Awards are the sum total of all the categories, so these have their place, no doubt about that. It’s just a shame that more folks don’t recognize this. Here are the three short subject categories and the remaining contenders...
