"You boys think you rule everything..." 1091 Pictures has revealed the trailer for an indie comedy titled The Fabulous Filipino Brothers, which premiered at the SXSW Film Festival last year. Actor "Dante Basco is making his directorial debut with The Fabulous Filipino Brothers, and he's not at it alone. With his family in real-life playing his family onscreen, the definition of 'family affair' is taken to the next level with the beautiful chaos that plays out throughout the film." Told in four vignettes featuring cockfights, adultery, romance, food, & family. It stars Dante Basco with Darion Basco, Dionysio Basco, Arianna Basco, Solenn Heussaff, Liza Lapira, Tirso Cruz III, Joey Guilla, Aida Basco, Darius Basco, Aurora Basco, Cheryl Tsai, and Crystal Kwon. When actor Dante Basco decided he wanted to direct a dramedy centered around an Asian/Pacific Islander family, he knew exactly who to call.
“I talked to Jon M. Chu, the director of ‘Crazy Rich Asians,'” Basco told TheWrap ahead of the SXSW premiere of his film, “The Fabulous Filpino Brothers.”
“When I first met Johnny, he was like, ‘You’re the first Asian face I saw. When you did Rufio [in “Hook”], that made me feel like I could be a part of Hollywood.’ So we’ve always had a great relationship,” Basco explained.
“I remember sitting in New York watching some of the pre-cut scenes from ‘In the Heights,'” Basco said, referring to Chu’s film based on the stage musical of the same name, which will be released in theaters and on HBO Max on June 11. “I was about to embark on my journey. He told...

The title for “The Fabulous Filipino Brothers” makes it sound like a movie about a now-obscure troupe of singing-dancing siblings who once opened for Frank Sinatra in Las Vegas, and were audience favorites back in the day on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” As it turns out, however, this engagingly freeform comedy has an entirely different sort of showbiz pedigree, being the joint effort of four real-life Filipino-American brothers — Dante, Derek, Dionysio and Darion Basco — with scads of film and TV acting, writing and producing credits on their respective IMDb pages. And while one can only wonder just how autobiographical this enterprise may be for any of them, there can be no doubt that their family ties are a major reason why the interactions of the characters they portray resound with a solid ring of truth that greatly enhances all the funny business.

Prolific Filipino helmer Adolfo Borinaga Alix Jr.’s latest big-screen endeavor “Mystery of the Night” is a supernatural folktale so beautifully atmospheric that one can almost overlook its escalating problems — for a while, at least. But this saga of an allegorical rape of Mother Nature by Western civilization, avenged by her forest she-creatures, eventually grows too humorlessly turgid to be as impactful as intended.
In the end, it’s an old-school Philippines cinema exercise in women weeping for the sins visited upon them by men, even if here the horror trappings allow for some payback. Those genre elements, as well as the film’s visual beauty, will be its major lure to non-Tagalog-speaking viewers.
After a brief flash-forward to climactic events, and opening credits that, in shadow-play style (performed by El Gamma Penumbra) illustrate the mythology of vengeful forest spirits (aka Aswang of Filipino folklore), the story begins in a...

Folklore, mythology, and fairy tales share a lot in common with horror, namely in how monsters or creatures can be representative of humans’ darker nature, and also in how the fantastical contains a morality lesson within. Such is the case with Adolfo Alix Jr.’s Mystery of the Night, a slow-burn fable set in a 1900s Spanish-ruled Philippine village—a period when aristocracy and clergymen tried to cover up their misdeeds, and their corruption begets inconceivable horrors.
An adaptation of Rody Vera’s stage play Ang Unang Aswang, Alix Jr. uses a theatrical, shadow puppet style title sequence to introduce some of the folkloric elements of the film. The colonized village sits adjacent to an enchanted forest, where those who enter rarely come back alive. If they do, they’re irrevocably changed, as the forest is protected by animalistic spirits. When a village woman is raped and left pregnant and raving mad,...
