Risky and risqué, indie films have always been a home for bold, honest, and controversial visions of teens’ sexuality. Eliza Hittman’s “Beach Rats,” opening this week after bowing at Sundance in January, is another notch in the belt of the sub-genre, a sensitive and often shocking look inside the coming-of-age of a young Brooklyn teen.
Like the best of these films, it’s not all about hormones; it builds on questions about identity and desire. But that’s there too, in sensitively crafted scenes that don’t skimp on reality. Punctuated by some bad choices and an unnerving final act, “Beach Rats” embraces the full spectrum of teen sexuality, even when it’s not exactly alluring.

If nothing else, James Ponsoldt's adaptation of Tim Tharp's novel will be remembered for the fine, measured performances of its young cast and a standout from a consistently reliable supporting actor. The Spectacular Now, having cooled its heels from a rapturous Sundance debut, now feels less remarkable and more observational, effective but average, notable largely for its intelligence when contrasted against the lowest-common-denominator approach of the romantic dramedy genre.

We are surrounded by fiction about teenagers that treats both its subjects and its target audience like idiots. So few filmmakers understand the problems and emotions of young people that when a film as great as “The Spectacular Now” comes along (my #13 of 2013), it’s a small miracle. Reminiscent of the best of Cameron Crowe, James Ponsoldt’s adaptation of Tim Tharp’s novel (from a script robbed of an Oscar nod by Scott Neustadter & Michael H. Weber) is a fantastic drama about a kid realizing that he may be peaking in high school. The Blu-ray is well-accompanied by a fantastic commentary from Ponsoldt, 20 minutes of deleted scenes, and featurettes.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
What’s in those 20 minutes? Proof that the editing process is essential to the success of a final film. “The Spectacular Now” at 115 minutes with these scenes included would not have been as strong of a film. There are...

As there are upwards of 6,000 members in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, I simply do not have the time or wherewithal to graffiti on everyone’s house “Robert Redford?” However, I can at least make a post on the internet calling out those they have snubbed; exposing where their collective categorizing as a majority of old white males went wrong.
In keeping with Brian Tallerico’s Oscar snub list from last year, I am going to also share which films would be taken out in a snubbed one’s place, while focusing on the top eight categories - with two particularly impassioned snubs to round out an even ten. And as “Life of Pi” was the film to rail against in award season 2013, I will try, but flounder, to mask my painful disinterest in supporting the cause of kudos for Alexander Payne’s “Nebraska.”

This week, we catch up on some movies we didn’t have a chance to review last year on the podcast. First, we take a look at Short Term 12, from director Destin Daniel Cretton who expands his 2008 short of the same name into a feature film. We also set aside some time to discuss another American-indie-hit of 2013, The Spectacular Now, an adaptation of Tim Tharp’s novel, directed with delicate restraint by James Ponsoldt. And in our week in review segment, we discuss True Detective and Hannibal. All this and more.

I was worried that "Spectacular Now," the fantastic coming-of-age dramedy from director James Ponsoldt would be totally forgotten this awards season (well, like "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" last year, this film was just relegated to minor kudos) but leave it to the USC librarians for giving it love!
Nominations for the 26th Annual USC Scripter Awards, given to the best adapted screenplay by the USC Libraries and chosen by various critics, academians, and scriptwriters, have been revealed and "Spectacular Now" was deemed one of the best!
We'll see if the script by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber will win (but I have a sneaky feeling that "12 Years a Slave" will grab the award) when the winner is revealed on Feb. 8.
Here's the complete nominations list of the 26th Annual USC Libraries Scripter Award:

Stark and gritty, this may be the most down-to-earth teen romance ever, filled with touches of unpredictable, inescapable reality. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): getting tired of all the teen-boy coming-of-age flicks
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
This is so not the teen-romance dramedy I thought it was going to be from its opening moments, when high-school senior and legend-in-his-own-mind Sutter (Miles Teller: Project X, Footloose) is trying to whip up an essay for his college application about a “challenge or hardship” he has faced… and he decides to write about how he is coping now that his perfect girlfriend, Cassidy (Brie Larson: 21 Jump Street, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), has dumped him, thereby ending their rule as the adolescent royalty of their school. Seriously? I thought, with an exasperated mental sigh.

The Spectacular Now is a special movie. Adapted from the novel by Tim Tharp by (500) Days of Summer scribes Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, the script is heartwarming, charming, entertaining, funny, and at times, utterly devastating. Instead of being the typical romantic teen comedy, The Spectacular Now feels real, which only adds to how amazing the movie is.
The film centers around a high school senior named Sutter (Miles Teller). He’s cocky, charming, the life of the party, and an alcoholic. Instead of worrying about the future, Sutter lives in the here and now and is completely satisfied with that. His girlfriend (Brie Larson) isn’t and ends their relationship. When that happens, Sutter flips from functional drunk (he’s usually seen sporting a flask or a 7-11 cup filled with liquor and pop) to black out drunk. He wakes up the next day on someone’s front lawn.

"The Spectacular Now" screenwriters Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber have become purveyors of coming-of-age films, and they wouldn't have it any other way.
"I have discovered in every single thing we've done, be it broad comedy versus teen drama, they're almost all coming-of-age stories in their own way," Neustadter, who also co-wrote the upcoming adaptation for "The Fault In Our Stars" with Weber, told HuffPost Entertainment. "It's people having their eyes opened by a relationship they come into contact with, and that makes them see themselves differently than they did before. I don't know what that says about us, but certainly the underlying thread of all the things we work on is somebody comes of age at some point."
Added a joking Weber: "I think it says that we are incredibly immature."

James Ponsoldt returned to Sundance this year with The Spectacular Now, and he most certainly did not disappoint.
Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley impressed critics and audiences alike, coming away with the Special Jury Prize for their joint-lead performances. And now the film has begun its limited release in the Us, already doing solid business for eOne in its first two weeks. And with the movie set to expand into more theatres on Friday, a new TV spot has landed online.

It began at Sundance in January. It was one of the first films that Katey got to see at the film festival and lauded the performances of stars Shailene Woodley and Miles Teller, saying that the former.s turn .proves that [her] vulnerable performance in The Descendants was no fluke,. and that the latter is .easily one of the best actors of his age.. A few months later at SXSW I found my own words echoing Katey.s. I was truly blown away by the film when I saw it in Austin and couldn.t believe how much incredible, authentic emotion the two young stars brought to their roles. And with the film now in theaters, you can experience it yourself. The Spectacular Now
Directed by James Ponsoldt
Written by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber
USA, 2013
The teenage genre is an infinite well Hollywood enjoys returning to, even if such repetition can frequently wind up creating some of the most inherently false-seeming films. We like watching movies about teenagers so we can be nostalgic for our high-school years, pretending that we were more popular than we really were, or simply revisiting all those good times on the big screen. But it’s rare for a teenage-heavy movie to portray the high school years accurately, because to do so is to portray the unending awkwardness and unspoken pain that fuels most of modern adolescence. So it’s somewhat gratifying to watch The Spectacular Now, which captures a troubled teenage life confidently and honestly through its portrayal of a romance on the edge of a nervous breakdown.

Strip away the makeup and the pretense, turn a few generic high school situations on their ear and an amazing thing can happen to a teen summer movie. Reality sets in, romance feels awkward, difficult and earned and characters make the journey from amusingly familiar to moving.
"The Spectacular Now," the James Ponsoldt film based on the Tim Tharp novel, is a light summer fling that turns serious. Witty, warm and wistful and in just the right proportions, "Spectacular" is the best-acted film of the summer.
Sutter Keely (Miles Teller of "Project X" and "Rabbit Hole") isn't much to look at. He's got more than the usual quota of teenage scars. But he has confidence, a bit of swagger and an undeniable charm. We meet him as he's typing out an inappropriately candid college application essay, raving about "the best girlfriend" that he just lost, Cassidy (Brie Larson).

The Spectacular Now is good, but it should be so much better. At only 95 minutes long it spends most of its running time on the same idea only to finally target some major dramatic beats in the final 20 minutes or so. Suddenly everything is rushed and seemingly major developments suddenly feel insignificant. Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley are fantastic as a pair of lost souls that find and lift one another up, but once the end rolls around it seems director James Ponsoldt believes we've reached some profound place in these characters' lives when in fact I started to care less and less. Teller plays Sutter Keely, a high school senior whose wit and charm make him the life of the party. He's hit a bit of a roadblock, however, ashis longtime girlfriend just broke up with him due to a misunderstanding, leaving him in a mild funk, but nothing...

"The Spectacular Now," like "The Perks of Being a Wallflower," is one of those rare and nuanced coming-of-age stories that realistically depicts teenagers doing stupid things, making short-sighted decisions, but also thinking and feeling deeply and falling hopelessly in love. Screenwriters Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber ("500 Days of Summer") say in a short video that precedes the movie that they wanted to write a film that was a tribute to the very relatable John Hughes movies of their youth. There's nothing paranormal or supernatural or dystopian about these teens. This is real life, where even fabulous kids with big hearts can be spectacularly messed up in one way or the other. Stars Miles Teller ("Footloose") and Shailene Woodley ("The Descendants") are amazing in their roles as hard-partying protagonist Sutter and his socially awkward new girlfriend, Aimee.

The Spectacular Now is that rare bird, a serious film about teenagers. I haven’t felt so swept up in the emotional lives of young people since The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Like that picture, this one is based on a novel (by Tim Tharp) and features superior performances by every hand-picked member of its ensemble, led by Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley. Teller plays Sutter Keeley, a high-school senior who doesn’t take anything or anyone seriously—his hard-working mom, his well-meaning teacher, his grades or even his relationship with his sexy girlfriend. Part of his goofball demeanor derives from the fact that he’s almost always drinking, hiding his booze in flask or a...

July 2013 was an incredibly interesting month to watch unfold at the box office. Despicable Me 2 conquered The Lone Ranger at the month’s start, and then it did it again in week 2 by conquering newcomer Pacific Rim. Warner Bros.’ low-budget horror, The Conjuring, triumphed over DreamWorks’ Turbo and Universal’s R.I.P.D. And fortunately, The Wolverine didn’t suffer a similar fate, topping the box office as predicted at the weekend. We continued to be faced with another impressive array of choices as we head into August. So in an effort to help make those choices a little easier, here are the top 10 must-see movies of the month.

Based on Tim Tharp's 2010 novel of the same name, The Spectacular Now follows the life of high school senior Sutter Keely (Teller) who, despite his charm and popularity, has trouble planning for the future and is instead intent on living in the moment. When he and his girlfriend (Larson) break up, Sutter winds up developing a relationship with a quiet, decidedly less outgoing girl, Aimee Finicky (Woodley). It's through their...

Anyone who doubts up-and-coming actors Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley after watching The Spectacular Now should be taken out back and flogged on account of stupidity. Watching the journey these two misunderstood teenagers embark on will have you both laughing heartily and crying soulfully, as the guys who scripted 500 Days Of Summer once again tug at our hearts with an emotionally jarring, yet absolutely lovely adaptation of Tim Tharp’s novel of the same name. If you’ve seen 500 Days Of Summer, you’ll know both Scott Neustadter and Michael H. To put us in the mood, theaters across the country are releasing iconic coming-of-age tales each week leading up to the film's release. Of the many films that premiered at Sundance this year, James Ponsoldt’s The Spectacular Now was by far one of the most well-received.
Ponsoldt’s leading duo, Miles Teller (Project X) and Shailene Woodley (The Descendants), came away from the festival winning the Special Jury Prize for their performances, which definitely lends substance to the incredibly positive early reviews.
A24 will be releasing the film in the States later this summer, and now they’ve released the excellent first trailer and poster.

Filmmaker James Ponsoldt’s second full-length feature Smashed turned the heads of many film fans as it made its way around the festival circuit in 2012. It was at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, however, that Ponsoldt really made waves, with his new feature garnering a lot of acclaim prior to getting picked up. Titled The Spectacular Now, the film is adapted from the Tim Tharp novel, and sees Ponsoldt hand over writing duties to 500 Days of Summer scribes Michael H. Weber and Scott Neustadter. The film stars Rabbit Hole‘s Miles Teller and The Descendants‘ Shailene Woodley alongside Brie Larson, Kaitlyn Dever, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Kyle Chandler, Bob Odenkirk, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Andre Royo, and the first trailer has now been released, which can be seen below.

In a summer filled with epic films that include superheroes, robots, and monsters, there are still a few other l gems that are worth checking out, like this film... The Spectacular Now. I had the opportunity to see this movie up at Sundance, and I absolutely loved it. It was one of my favorite films at the film fest. You can read my review for it here and watch our video review for it here.
The movie has a solid cast of actors that includes Miles Teller, Shailene Woodley, Brie Larson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Kyle Chandler. They were all perfect in this movie. The film is based on Tim Tharp’s novel, and it "captures the insecurity and confusion of adolescence without looking for tidy truths." The movie comes from the writers who brought us (500) Days of Summer, Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, and here's...

Last year James Ponsoldt's Smashed didn't really make much of a dent in the landscape, forgotten by most or perhaps never seen. It featured a solid performance from Mary Elizabeth Winstead and despite my aversion to films about alcoholism, it was quite good. Ponsoldt's new film, The Spectacular Now travels in similar territory and recently won a Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival for its two leads -- Shailene Woodley (The Descendents) and Miles Teller (Rabbit Hole) -- and today the first trailer for the film has arrived. The film is an adaptation of Tim Tharp's novel centered on Sutter Keely (Teller), a high school senior and a budding alcoholic. One night he gets drunk and wakes up on a lawn with Aimee Finicky (Woodley) hovering over him. The film follows their relationship from that point forward. Along with Teller and Woodley, the film stars Brie Larson,...

Before they became co-stars and on-screen arch nemeses for "Divergent," Shailene Woodley and Miles Teller worked on another Ya adaptation called "The Spectacular Now" (book by Tim Tharp) and now, spectacularly, the first trailer for the film is finally here! Today, MTV debuted the first-glimpse at the film, which debuted at Sundance this past winter and which will hit theaters in August, and it is so stinking adorable. View slideshow: Shailene Woodley and Miles Teller attend Laff screening of 'The Spectacular Now' In the movie, Teller stars as a popular, boozey dumpee who buddies up with the uber young and cute Woodley when she finds him passed out on a lawn. His partying lifestyle gets a bit of an upgrade thanks to her "nice girl" antics, and all the feels ensue. Quite a far cry from the Tris versus Peter dynamic the two will display next March in "Divergent,...

The first rule of modern moviemaking: If you’re adapting a bestselling Ya book, you must — I repeat, must — cast Secret Life of the American Teenager refugee Shailene Woodley as your star.
The Fault in Our Stars did it. EW’s current cover star Divergent did it. And both are following in the celluloid footsteps of The Spectacular Now, a Sundance darling based on Tim Tharp’s eponymous 2008 novel. The story follows the romance between charming, popular, happy-go-lucky teenage alcoholic Sutter (Miles Teller) and shy, wise, pretty-but-doesn’t-know-it Aimee (Woodley, naturally), whom he meets after passing out on her lawn.

The summer season has, over the past few decades, become synonymous with movie blockbuster season, as studios have found the months of May to August to contain the most profitable release dates for big-budget tentpole features, leading to the summer of recent years being filled with superhero films, big budget CGI features, and other tentpole movies that draw in huge crowds. This year is no different, as Marvel’s Iron Man 3 is set to kick off the summer movie season as May rolls around. However, this doesn’t mean non-blockbuster features don’t make their way to theatres during this time, and for those looking for smaller features, there are plenty of viewing options. Here are ten of our most anticipated non-blockbuster features set to be released over the next few months.
Author’s note: All films were selected based on their release date in American theatres.

One of the hits of this year's Sundance Film Fest was The Spectacular Now, a small coming-of-age flick directed by James Ponsoldt. However, after seeing it at SXSW, I have to say it's almost insulting to label such a sharp, perceptive film as a "coming-of-age flick."
Based on a novel by Tim Tharp, The Spectacular Now focuses on Sutter Keely (played wonderfully by Miles Teller), a smart, charismatic high school senior whose only future plans involve drinking and partying. While Sutter is beloved by almost everyone, he's also somewhat pitied because of his underachieving ways. As the movie opens, Sutter is dumped by his long-time girlfriend Cassidy (Brie Larson). It seems she wants a future and realizes that Sutter doesn't. Of course,...

At this point Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley don.t really have to prove anything to anybody. In 2010 he broke out with a great turn starring alongside Nicole Kidman in the deep drama Rabbit Hole, and was the best part of Craig Brewer.s Footloose; while she caught many movie-goers. attention with her stand-out part playing George Clooney.s daughter in Alexander Payne.s The Descendants and has already parlayed that success into landing the role as Mary-Jane Watson in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. But just because we.re not surprised by the blisteringly incredible performances they give in James Ponsoldt.s The Spectacular Now doesn.t diminish who truly great they are. Based on the novel by Tim Tharp and adapted by (500) Days of Summer writers Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Major Hollywood studios like Warner Bros., Sony and Lionsgate debuted films at the 2013 South by Southwest Film Festival, but new distributor on the block A24 might have made the biggest impact. The studio brought "Spring Breakers" and "The Spectacular Now" to Austin, and both films continued to impress festival audiences, though for vastly different reasons.
Directed by James Ponsoldt (last year's festival fave "Smashed"), "The Spectacular Now" is a coming of age tale in the vein of "Say Anything," but with a flask replacing a pen. We have reached the final ten films in my 2014 Oscar Preview, which has been made up of 40 potential 2014 Oscar contenders and, as we all know, I'm sure to have missed more than a handful. However, I think today's batch has more than a few gems to keep an eye on, many of which made my list of most anticipated films of 2013. This list also includes the one movie of the entire 40 that has the best chance of being pushed to next year, but it would be foolish to leave it off until we know for sure. You probably know what film I'm talking about, but if you don't I'm sure the next paragraph will give it away. This final list of ten films begins with Prisoners from Incendies helmer Denis Villeneuve and starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal alongside Melissa Leo and Viola Davis, next is Brad Furman's Runner,...
