New Video From Retroware Delves Into Progress on ‘The Transylvania Adventure of Simon Quest’ [Watch]
Retroware has dropped a new video talking about the development of their Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest tribute The Transylvania Adventure of Simon Quest, which was first announced back in January. Hosted by Retroware Creative Director Justin Silverman, the video goes over the origins of the game, before diving into the nitty gritty of its inner workings.
Originally starting out as a joke by solo developer Programancer, Simon Quest was coded in the Game Maker engine. According to Silverman, the game was never intended to be a serious project, and so the questionable coding reflected that. Despite this, the game started gaining traction, so he kept working on it, which resulted in the problematic coding and its issues stacking up.
As a result, the code has been stripped out and reworked to fix numerous issues, including optimization, proper aspect ratio and more. The result has made it possible for Simon...

To Washington Heights we go. The Tony Awards head to a new venue this year, the United Palace, but the excitement of honoring the year’s best in theater is the same as ever. If, like me, you can’t wait for Sunday night’s event to begin, that’s where math can come in.
Similar to the Oscars, I’ve built a mathematical model to predict the Tonys in all 26 categories, based on a combination of which categories a show is nominated in, the aggregated predictions of various Broadway critics, and the results of the Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, and Drama League Awards. The model is trained on historical Tony Awards data over the past quarter-century — inputs that have done a better job of predicting each category in the past get more weight in this year’s predictions. In some years, the favorites will dominate, like the final...

In the end, was Spotify’s acquisition of Gimlet and Parcast all a waste?
That’s how unionized staffers at Gimlet and Parcast described Spotify’s decision on Monday to begin shuttering the two podcast studios that the audio giant had purchased in 2019 for 221 million euros. “When Spotify purchased Gimlet and Parcast for nearly $300 million, they acquired an incredible group of talented people with specific and marketable skills. Then, they wasted that opportunity: canceling shows with dedicated audiences, leaving half-finished projects to die on the vine, and giving teams little direction as to what they actually wanted to see produced,” the Gimlet and Parcast unions said. “Gimlet and Parcast were studios with vision that helped shape our industry. Whether Spotify Studios has a vision remains to be seen.”
Four years after their acquisitions, Gimlet and Parcast will sunset this summer as they combine to make Spotify Studios, an in-house studio division led by Julie McNamara.

Hosting the 95th Oscars, Jimmy Kimmel did not miss an opportunity to take a dig at Matt Damon, asking Jessica Chastain in a comedic segment, “Was it difficult filming your movie ‘The Martian’ because your co-star Matt Damon can’t read and smells like dog medicine?”
Chastain laughed and responded, “I didn’t really have a lot of scenes with him, so it was fine.”
Kimmel and Damon’s infamous (and hilarious) feud dates back to the third season of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” in 2005, when Kimmel made an offhand joke at the end of a show about booting Damon, an A-list guest who would never be cut for time. Soon, “I want to apologize to Matt Damon, we ran out of time” became a recurring bit on “Kimmel.”
In 2006, Damon appeared on Kimmel’s show to play along with the feud, shouting as the credits rolled, “I knew you were going to fucking do it!

“Jews Don’t Count,” a new documentary from British writer and comedian David Baddiel set to air on U.K. broadcaster Channel 4 next week, is an examination of how, particularly in progressive circles, there is a persistent sense that Jews aren’t entitled to the same protection and support as other minority communities. That sense is predicated on the antisemitic belief that all Jews are rich, successful and “dominate” industries such as Hollywood, if not the very world order.

Ted Kotcheff's 1989 comedy "Weekend at Bernie's" was considered outrageous at the time. Andrew McCarthy and Jonathan Silverman play a pair of low-level insurance wonks who, in the course of their daily work, find a mysterious "mistake" on the books. It seems that someone has been committing fraud. When they take it to their boss Bernie (Terry Kiser), he invites them to his beach house as thanks for figuring it out. Bernie is, of course, the perpetrator and intends to murder them. Before he can, however, Bernie is killed by a vengeful mob boss (Bernie was sleeping with the mob boss' sister). When the McCarthy and Silverman characters arrive, they find Bernie dead, surmise that foul play is afoot, and figure they have to protect themselves from any further mob violence ... by pretending Bernie is still alive.
The bulk of the movie involves McCarthy and Silverman hoisting around a dead body,...

Aside from taking a bow (or three) and receiving applause, actors don’t typically address the audience following a stage performance.
But last night’s production of the one-woman show The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe at L.A.’s Mark Taper Forum was not an average night at the theater for Cecily Strong, which is why she took 30 seconds at the end of a very enthusiastic standing ovation to make an announcement.
“I want to acknowledge one very special person who’s here tonight — our original Trudy, our hero, the incredible Lily Tomlin,” she said, her voice quivering with emotion as she shouted out the comedy legend, a reveal that was greeted by shock and awe from the sold-out crowd on opening night. The room responded by intensifying an already electric round of applause as guests scanned the seats to locate Tomlin.

Most romance films typically center around young love and growing old together. Less common are stories about finding love at an older age or simply being older and in love. But isn’t a romance story romantic regardless of whatever age one finds love? Max Walker-Silverman thinks so, and his film “A Love Song” proves it.

It has been nearly 45 years since the death of Marc Bolan, a.k.a., T. Rex., at the shockingly young age of 29. Yet five decades after the heyday of glam rock, Bolan’s music remains ubiquitous. At this exact moment audiences around the world are hearing the swaggering “Bang a Gong (Get It On)” as it accompanies a key scene in Top Gun: Maverick. The newest album from Def Leppard, Diamond Star Halos, takes its name from “Gong.” And Bolan has been name-checked in multiple reviews of the latest album from a similarly gender-fluid pop star, Harry Styles. Now the high-profile documentary Angelheaded Hipster: The Songs of Marc Bolan & T. Rex makes its world premiere at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival.
A good chunk of Angelheaded Hipster documents the star-studded creation of a 2020 tribute album, also called AngelHeaded Hipster: The Songs of Marc Bolan & T. Rex. Indeed, the goal of director...

At the outset of Ethan Silverman’s documentary “Angelheaded Hipster: The Songs of Marc Bolan & T. Rex,” Billy Idol relays an anecdote about Marc Bolan — the magnetic songwriter and frontman of the English glam rock band T. Rex — getting booed by a crowd of 175,000 at a festival in 1971.
If you’ve heard of Bolan or even heard a single song by T. Rex (you have), it’s no surprise that the anecdote ends with Bolan melting the crowd’s faces with an hour of his churning, groovy guitars and sensually laconic singing, battering his guitar strings with a tambourine and receiving a 15-minute standing ovation in the process.
That’s just the kind of rock star Marc Bolan was, and his charisma is still so powerful, 45 years after his death at the age of 30, that it threatens to derail the focus of the documentary. That focus is ostensibly about the...

Since I started compiling Outrage Watch -- HitFix's "(almost) daily rundown of all the thing folks are peeved about in entertainment" -- I've never been faced with a shortage of things to write about. There's a lot of anger out there! At times so much that it can feel overwhelming. Other times, I just have to laugh at the sheer inanity of the things people manage to work themselves up over. Of the stories I highlight, I would say a good 75 percent represent examples of righteous outrage -- i.e. scorn directed at legitimate targets. And the other 25? The phrase "pick your battles" comes to mind here, and indeed, sometimes it seems the level of anger is blown out of all proportion to the target in question. As we look back on the winter of 2015, below you can find my roundup of 13 of the wackiest, most overblown controversies of the year so far.

[1] NBC has won the bidding war for a new comedy series by Sarah Silverman, beating out competing networks ABC and Fox. Loosely based on Silverman's own life [2], the untitled single-camera show will star the comedian as a woman getting back into single life after getting out of a ten-year relationship. Silverman is set to co-write the pilot with Dan Sterling and Jon Schroeder, both of whom worked on her previous series The Sarah Silverman Program. Also on board with the project is Ron Howard, who has been "deeply involved" with the show's development, and his Imagine Entertainment partner Brian Grazer. Worth noting: The last time Grazer and Howard collaborated on a single-camera network comedy series, the result was Arrested Development. I'll be keeping an eye on this one. [The Hollywood Reporter [3]] After the jump, a Daily Show writer plays with Henson puppets, a Sopranos actor returns to organized crime, and Clone Wars' fourth season gets a trailer.

Silverman and Rock were among those attending on Sunday, while on Monday evening Colin Quinn delivered a poignant eulogy and Giraldo's brother offered family stories.
