Having established herself at the BBC with the police procedural “Happy Valley” and the crossdressing costume drama “Gentleman Jack,” screenwriter-turned-showrunner Sally Wainwright has followed countless creatives and taken the Disney shilling to initiate her latest project. You can hardly blame her, given the reduced offer the cash-strapped British broadcaster is now extending even to its more illustrious dramaturges: rarely more than three episodes per series and four characters per scene. Imposed by post-Brexit belt-tightening, this sorry set of limitations has exasperated those obliged to work within them while dispiriting viewers, left watching the life — and the talent — drain from primetime broadcasts.
Mashing up historical and fantastical elements, the pricey-looking, eight-part “Renegade Nell” rides into a surprisingly crowded field for light period entertainments straddling the Stuart and Georgian eras, emerging after the sadly short-lived BBC comedy “The Witchfinder” and Apple TV+’s recent “The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin.” While...

The long-delayed Emmy Awards for the 2022-2023 TV season had to overcome the challenge of seeming like a complete afterthought — and for the most part it succeeded.
The ceremony for the 75th Emmys was designed as a tribute to the medium, and featured reunions from shows such as “All in the Family,” “The Sopranos,” “Martin” and “Grey’s Anatomy,” the last of which featured the beloved, departed cast members Katherine Heigl and Justin Chambers, alongside Og stars Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr. Among the evening’s highlights were Jennifer Coolidge thanking “all the evil gays,” Niecy Nash-Betts thanking herself and “every Black and Brown woman who have gone unheard, yet overpoliced,” and a moving, hilarious appearance by nominee Christina Applegate as the show’s first presenter. And HBO’s “Succession” took its final victory lap after the Jesse Armstrong-created series ended in May of last year, including...

“Ted Lasso” is on track to win its third Emmy in a row for Best Comedy Series, per Gold Derby’s racetrack odds. Apple TV Plus’ feel-good show topped all other laffers this year with a whopping 21 Emmy nominations (see below), just one shy of the comedy record set by “30 Rock” in 2009. Fun fact: if “Ted Lasso” goes on to win trophy #3 this September, it’d be only the seventh comedy in Emmy history to prevail for its first three seasons on the air.
The most recent time this rare feat occurred was for “Modern Family,” which actually won five times consecutively (2010-14). Before that was “30 Rock” (first three seasons in 2007-09), “Frasier” (first five seasons in 1994-98), “Taxi” (first three seasons in 1979-81), “All in the Family” and “The Phil Silvers Show” (first three seasons in 1956-58).

Mj Delaney has been with “Ted Lasso” since the beginning and the Emmy winner can only describe the three-season journey so far as an “absolute pleasure.” “This show, in particular, is such a lovely bunch of people and we’ve all just been a happy family from the start,” Delaney tells Gold Derby at our Meet the Experts: Directors panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). “Being able to go three seasons with them, it was so good from the get-go in terms of the dynamics behind the scenes that you just kind of build on that and get to know each other.”
And even three seasons in, there are still firsts for the Brit. Delaney has directed two episodes in each season so far, but unlike the first two installments, in which she helmed a block at the end of the season, she directed the first two episodes of...

The original spark that made "Ted Lasso" such a breath of fresh air when the first season debuted came from the unshakable optimism of its lead character. As the series has gone on, the storylines have dealt with more serious issues like mental health and anxiety, which have humanized the cast and made them much more relatable. And as the show has grown more complex, the feel-good nature of "Ted Lasso" has subsided a little to make room for other characters, like Hannah Waddingham's Rebecca, to become more three-dimensional. In the first season, Rebecca was poised to be the villain who secretly planned to dismantle the team, but once her unhealthy relationship with Rupert (Anthony Head) is revealed, she instantly transforms into someone to root for.
Waddingham plays Rebecca as a powerhouse executive with a steely armored shell around her, but that resolve gives way at times to show...

As Apple TV+ prepped to roll out the blue carpet in Westwood this week for the Season 3 premiere of its Emmy Award-winning comedy juggernaut Ted Lasso, one question lingered in the air: Is this the end?
Ahead of the Tuesday night event, Ted Lasso himself, co-creator, star and executive producer Jason Sudeikis, got ahead of the inevitable press line interrogation to make it clear that the time on the Richmond scoreboard is, indeed, running out. “This is the end of this story that we wanted to tell,” Sudeikis told Deadline.
The 12-episode season debuts March 15 and continues through May 31, and while options remain on the field for spinoffs and future iterations (Richmond Till We Die, anyone?), Sudeikis made it clear that this is his final bow as the beloved “aw shucks” Midwesterner turned English Premier League soccer coach but he believes there is more life left.

Following its history-making, back-to-back Emmy Award wins for its freshman and sophomore seasons, Apple TV+ today revealed that season three of its global phenomenon “Ted Lasso,” will premiere around the world with the first episode on Wednesday, March 15, followed by new episodes weekly, every Wednesday. Moving to its new weekly Wednesday premiere, “Ted Lasso” marks the first Apple TV+ series to launch mid-week. In the 12-episode third season of “Ted Lasso,” the newly-promoted AFC Richmond faces ridicule as media predictions widely peg them as last in the Premier League and Nate (Nick Mohammed), now hailed as the “wonder kid,” has gone to work for Rupert (Anthony Head) at West Ham United. In the wake of Nate’s contentious departure from Richmond, Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein) steps up as assistant coach, alongside Beard (Brendan Hunt). Meanwhile, while Ted (Jason Sudeikis) deals with pressures at work, he continues to wrestle with his own personal issues back home,...

Bill Hader has yet to win a directing Emmy for “Barry,” but he has a perfect record at the Directors Guild of America Awards. Can he go three for three now?
Hader is seeking his third Best TV Comedy Directing prize for the insta-classic Season 3 episode “710N,” aka the one with that wild freeway chase. He previously won for helming the series premiere and the iconic Season 2 installment “ronny/lily.” The same three episodes earned him Emmy nominations as well, but he did not win.
So Hader is once again entering the DGA Awards for redemption. He is currently in second place in the odds, behind Mike White for “The White Lotus.” Christopher Storer (“The Bear”) is in third, followed by Tim Burton (“Wednesday”) and Amy Sherman-Palladino (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), who’s on her fourth bid in this category.

Apple TV+ recently announced that Ted Lasso would return sometime in the spring.
On Tuesday, the streaming service confirmed a premiere date -- and dropped an exciting teaser trailer.
New episodes will premiere around the world on Wednesday, March 15, followed by new episodes weekly, every Wednesday.
Moving to its new weekly Wednesday premiere, Ted Lasso marks the first Apple TV+ series to launch mid-week.
No reason for the change has been given, but Disney+ previously found success by shifting premieres from Fridays to Wednesdays.
The third and possibly final season will comprise 12 episodes.
As for what's on tap for the third season, "the newly-promoted AFC Richmond faces ridicule as media predictions widely peg them as last in the Premier League and Nate (Nick Mohammed), now hailed as the 'wonder kid,' has gone to work for Rupert (Anthony Head) at West Ham United."

Exclusive: London-based Lark is one of the buzziest new boutique film and TV agencies in Europe.
The company was quietly set up by former Troika Director Harriet Pennington Legh in 2020 but gained momentum this year with the addition of former Casarotto and 42 rep Sophie Dolan and longtime Independent Talent agent Roxana Adle. Exiting bigger agencies usually comes with some bumps and bruises (and temporary no-press gags) but the trio took the plunge and are now reaping the rewards.
Together, the three UK agenting dynamos now lead Lark and join a new wave of vibrant UK rep businesses that launched a decade ago with 42 and most recently spawned B-Side Management, which opened shop last year.
Lark’s list is curated and cerebral but also fresh and increasingly acclaimed. The stable of global writers and filmmakers includes Sebastián Lelio, Joanna Hogg, Ritesh Batra, Karim Aïnouz, Shannon Murphy, Maria Schrader, Oliver Hermanus, Ali Abbasi,...

The Emmy Awards went off last night, and some of the best and brightest of TV were honored. Emmy mainstays like Ted Lasso and Succession picked up a ton of awards, but there was also a strong presence of first-season shows like the dystopian Squid Game and sitcom Abbott Elementary.
Miniseries The White Lotus also cleaned up in the Limited Series or Anthology Series category, winning three awards including Best Series. It was initially meant for one season but was such a hit that a second season set in Sicily is now in production.
Emmy Awards Winners List
Abbott Elementary’s creator Quinta Brunson was honored with her first Emmy for writing the show’s pilot, and star Sheryl Lee Ralph also got the Supporting Actress Award for comedy. As you may well know already, Monday, September 12, 2022, was the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony. The Emmys are perhaps the most prestigious award in the world of entertainment. “it is the most coveted television accolade on the planet, and yet it’s impossible to win one” said Oprah Winfrey while presenting one of the awards to the Lead Actor in a Limited Anthology Series or Movie — Michael Keaton, star in the drama miniseries “Dopesick.”

The 74th annual Emmy Awards turned out to be a night of few surprises, with wins playing out largely according to predictions — including TheWrap’s own Steve Pond, who guessed last week that there would be no sweeps as the top shows — “Succession,” “Ted Lasso,” “Squid Game” and “Abbott Elementary” — all duked it out for dominance.
In the end, it was HBO’s limited series “The White Lotus” that took home the most trophies, five, with three wins going to writer-director-executive-producer Mike White.
“Ted Lasso” won four Emmys, repeating its 2021 triumph in supporting actor (Brett Goldstein), lead actor (Jason Sudeikis) and comedy series — and adding directing for a comedy series (M.J. Delaney). “Succession” took home three statuettes, including Outstanding Drama Series, which it last won in 2020.

The 2022 Emmy Awards have drawn to a close, after an especially big night for the cast and crew of HBO’s The White Lotus.
The wealth satire won awards in five categories, honouring stars Murray Bartlett and Jennifer Coolidge for their acting and creator Mike White for his writing and directing.
Coolidge should also have taken home the award for best speech of the night, telling the crowd that a preparatory lavender bath before the ceremony had bloated her like a balloon and made it difficult for her to speak.
Succession, meanwhile, won the top gong for Best Drama. While accepting the award, its creator, British writer Jesse Armstrong took the opportunity onstage to make a poorly received comparison between the show and King Charles III’s ascent to the throne following the death of Queen Elizabeth II – “Big week for successions,” he quipped.

If you’re an award show producer, you probably go into the job knowing that “triumph” is close to impossible. It’s a tough gig. But when you’re done and people look back, is it better to be remembered in infamy or forgotten in monotony?
Nearly six months after March’s Academy Awards, I still laugh nervously when somebody mentions the Oscars telecast, which was a badly conceived show until Will Smith elevated it to a pantheon of notoriety. But hey, at least I remember the 94th Academy Awards!
Nearly three hours after Monday (September 12) night’s 74th Primetime Emmy Awards, I barely remember the telecast at all. But hey, at least it wasn’t a catastrophe?
Maybe halfway through the evening, the telecast was at a tipping point: The first 90 minutes of the show were a mixed bag. But which award show isn’t?...

On paper, there were no major surprises at the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards as all the winners were either considered clear front-runners or runners-up on most prediction lists. Still, the dominant showing for Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso probably qualifies as a surprise.
Emmys TV Review: NBC Plays It Too Safe With Lightweight Show
Given the mixed reaction to the second season, the long time that had passed since its run and co-creator/star Jason Sudeikis’ ongoing personal drama, it seemed like the momentum had shifted away from the hit comedy. Add to that that Ted Lasso won zero awards at the Creative Arts Emmys versus three last year, and lost out the bellwether Casting in a Comedy Series category there to Abbott Elementary, and it looked like the ABC freshman was primed for an upset; the last seven shows that won the Casting for a Comedy Series Emmy had...

The Emmys often award the same shows over and over again, and, well, they did that again tonight by giving Best Comedy Series to last year’s winner “Ted Lasso” and Best Drama Series to the winner two years ago, “Succession.” But it wasn’t a sweep of the Comedy and Drama categories at the 74th Prime Emmy Awards by those two shows by any means.
In fact, the Emmys spread the wealth quite a bit: in the Comedy categories, “Ted Lasso” indeed won four Emmys: for Lead Actor Jason Sudeikis, Supporting Actor Brett Goldstein, and Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series, as well as the top prize. But “Abbott Elementary” also won two major prizes: Sheryl Lee Ralph for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, and for Best Writing for a Comedy Series.

Jason Sudeikis tonight claimed his third Emmy, with the award recognizing his lead performance on Apple TV+’s hit series, Ted Lasso. (Watch his acceptance speech above.)

“Succession” entered these awards with a leading 25 nominations, the most of any program in any genre. “Ted Lasso” was the top comedy with 20, tied with the leading limited series contender “The White Lotus.” But the lion’s share of categories were already decided at the Creative Arts Awards that took place over two ceremonies on September 3 and 4.
“Ted Lasso” was actually the biggest loser at those kudos going 0-10. It can still rebound at tonight’s main ceremony and repeat as Best Comedy Series, but that was a major hit, especially the Best Casting loss to “Abbott Elementary.

Hillary Clinton and her daughter Chelsea are hitting the road in their new docuseries “Gutsy,” talking to inspiring women and trying bold new activities along the way. In the first trailer for the series, we see the former women of the White House rappelling over waterfalls, putting out fires — and bowling with Wanda Sykes.
According to Apple TV+, the series “shows Hillary and Chelsea as you’ve never seen them before, revealing their special mother-daughter bond and the unique, multi-generational way they approach the important and timely issues highlighted in each episode.” Those issues are raised as part of “a thought-provoking journey to speak with pioneering women artists, activists, community leaders and everyday heroes who show us what it truly means to be gutsy.”
We see a few of those famous faces in the footage, including Kate Hudson and her mom Goldie Hawn, Kim Kardashian and more. But, the series isn’t limited to actors.

Saturday night at the Maybourne Beverly Hills Hotel, Apple TV Plus hosted a fun tailgate party for its crowning jewel comedy series “Ted Lasso” in celebration of its 20 Emmy nominations. Several nominees attended the all-guild FYC event, including supporting actors Brett Goldstein, Nick Mohammed and Toheeb Jimoh, supporting actress Sarah Niles, guest stars Sam Richardson and James Lance, and director M.J. A version of this story about female directors first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Comedy issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
This year was far from a landmark for female directors at the Emmys, with only 13 women nominated against 32 men across the seven directing categories. Sure, that’s better than last year, when 47 men and only 11 women were nominated, and it’s much better than 2018, when the lamentable total was 44 men and only four (!) women.
But this year’s total is a step down from 2020, when the record 16 female directors that were nominated made up a full 33 of the total; this year, that has slipped down to just below 29.
Still, there’s one bright spot to make up for women being shut out of the Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special category or only managing one nomination each in the limited series, documentary/nonfiction and reality categories. The...
