Nominations for the 39th Annual Lucille Lortel Awards were announced today by Amber Iman and George Abud, two stars of Broadway’s “Lempicka.” The Lortels honor outstanding achievement in Off-Broadway theater. The 2024 ceremony will take place on Sunday, May 5 at NYU Skirball Center. The Lucille Lortel Awards are produced by the Off-Broadway League and Lucille Lortel Theatre, with additional support provided by Tdf.
It’s common for productions to begin their life Off-Broadway before transferring to the Main Stem, so many of this year’s Tony Awards hopefuls are among the list of Lortel nominations. Chief among these contenders is “Hell’s Kitchen,” the semi-autobiographical musical from Alicia Keys. That tuner garnered five Lortel nominations. These include Best Musical, Best Choreography for Camille A. Brown, a Lead Performer bid for Maleah Joi Moon, and Featured Performer bids for Shoshana Bean and Kecia Lewis. All performance categories at the Lortel Awards are gender neutral.

Singer-songwriter Ani Difranco will make her Broadway debut as ‘Persephone’ in the hit musical Hadestown, performing the role she originated on the 2010 studio-concept album by composer Anaïs Mitchell.
Difranco will begin performances at the Walter Kerr Theatre on February 9, 2024. The announcement was made today by producers Mara Isaacs, Dale Franzen, Hunter Arnold, and Tom Kirdahy.
Difranco’s history with Hadestown began when she invited Mitchell to release the original studio album of Hadestown on Difranco’s label Righteous Babe Records. Difranco originated the role of ‘Persephone’ on the album, leaving what the producers’ announcement today described as “an indelible imprint on the character as the show evolved over the course of several years.”
“I could not be more thrilled to be joining the cast of Hadestown,” Difranco said in a statement. “It’s like I get to rewind to my New York youth and follow the road not taken.”

Gabriel Byrne’s Broadway solo show Walking With Ghosts will play its final performance on Sunday, November 20, a week shy of a month after its Oct. 27 opening at the Music Box Theatre.
The closing notice was announced today by producers Anne Clarke, Mara Isaacs, and Neal Street. The show had initially been scheduled to run through Dec. 30.
Adapted by Byrne from his best-selling memoir, Walking with Ghosts, directed by Lonny Price, began previews on Oct. 18 and opened to mixed reviews. The autobiographical one-man show has struggled at the box office, last week filling fewer than half of the venue’s seats and grossing just 168,378 for seven performances.
The show fared better in the U.K., playing sold-out engagements at the Gaiety Theatre in Dublin and in a limited run on London’s West End before making the move to Broadway.

Jim Parsons will star in an Off Broadway revival of A Man of No Importance, the 2002 musical featuring a book by Terrence McNally, music by Stephen Flaherty, and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens.
The Classic Stage Company production will begin performances on Tuesday, October 11, with opening night set for Sunday, October 30 for a limited run through Sunday, December 4.
Parsons, the longtime star of CBS’ The Big Bang Theory who starred on Broadway in the 2018 production of The Boys in the Band and the 2020 Netflix adaptation, will portray Alfie Byrne, a bus driver for an amateur theatre group in 1960s Dublin determined to stage a production of Oscar Wilde’s Salome. As described by Csc, “Alfie confronts the forces of bigotry and shame over a love ‘that dare not speak its name.’ This evocative and award-winning musical illustrates the redemptive power of theater, love, and friendship, all for a man of seemingly no importance.

Hadestown and Girl From The North Country announced their Broadway returns today, with the Tony Award-winning musical Hadestown set to become the first production to resume performances on Broadway when its curtain rises on Thursday, Sept. 2.
Girl From The North Country, the musical that features songs from Bob Dylan’s catalogue, will resume performances on Wednesday, Oct. 13.
The Hadestown re-launch will mark the first Broadway production to begin performances since the March 12, 2020, pandemic shutdown. New York Gov. Last spring, in the early days of Broadway’s Covid-19 pandemic shutdown, news reports and industry chatter referred to an eventual reopening as if a light switch would be flipped and the marquees of all 41 theaters would light up the Midtown night. Actors had left their dressing rooms full of the usual personal stuff — street clothes, photos, charms — as if they’d soon be back from a long holiday weekend.
The optimism was short lived, as the shutdown was extended time and again — April, June, September, January, June again. News got grim, and then more grim. The National Endowment for the Arts recently released figures indicating that while the overall unemployment rate has averaged 8.5 percent, the average among actors was 52 percent.

The newly formed Theatre Producers of Color organization announced today its first educational program to support and mentor the next generation of Bipoc producers. The 10-week, limited-space program will be tuition free.
“Producers 101″ will feature a guest speaker roster of top Broadway producers to teach what Tpoc says are the fundamentals of commercial producing, including securing rights, marketing and advertising, development paths, financing, and budgeting. The weekly course begins Jan. 25, 2021.
“Oftentimes, the opportunities for learning how to become a commercial producer are inaccessible and out of reach,” said Tpoc founder Miranda Gohh in a statement. “We’ve observed many barriers keeping Bipoc out of commercial producing, and Tpoc strives to break these down and make producing more accessible for a variety of voices. By making all of our programs free, we are allowing any Bipoc regardless of background, level of education, training, or previous accomplishment to join us.”

The Grammys took a fairly expansive sweep with this morning’s nominations for Best Musical Theater Album, The Motown sound, Rodgers & Hammerstein, the folk-rock music of Anaïs Mitchell, the reworked radio hits of Moulin Rouge! and Imogen Heap’s Harry Potter musical suites were all represented.
But four of the five nominations did not include composers, since the music was not original to the cast albums. In the case of several, the musical numbers consist largely of oldies, some reworked for contemporary settings. Anaïs Mitchell’s previous concept album for Hadestown was already Grammy-nominated upon its release in 2010.

Hadestown, the Tony-Winning Best New Musical, has become the first musical of the 2018-2019 Broadway season to recoup its initial investment of $11.5M, producers said today.
The announcement was made by producers Mara Isaacs, Dale Franzen, Hunter Arnold, and Tom Kirdahy.
The musical, written by Anaïs Mitchell and directed by Rachel Chavkin, is one of the few productions from last season that continues to fill all of its seats, week after week. Hadestown is the highest-grossing musical in the history of Broadway’s Walter Kerr Theatre.
Lead producer Mara Isaacs said in a statement, “Hadestown is a testament to the power of live theater to connect us all. It started in 2006 as an indie theater project, traveling around New England in a silver-painted school bus and has grown to something that has touched millions of people. Rachel Chavkin has been here before. Under her direction, Hadestown, Anaïs Mitchell’s gorgeous musical that sets the mythical tales of Orpheus, Eurydice, Hades and Persephone in – above ground – a stylized New Orleans and – below ground – a coal-mining hellscape – has garnered 14 Tony Award nominations. That’s the most nominations of any production this year, just as the Chavkin-directed Natasha, Pierre, & The Great Comet of 1812 fronted the nomination pack (with 12) in 2017.
So yes, the Tony-nominated Chavkin has been here before, but what does it say about Broadway that she is, in a sense, alone in her field: She’s the only woman to direct a Broadway musical this season.
In this candid, wide-ranging conversation, Chavkin spoke to Deadline about Broadway, about what women like herself and Anaïs Mitchell bring to the theater, about Hadestown specifically, and about what she’d like to do next.
